Mary Virginia Giovannine

Retired School Teacher

Feb. 9, 1914 - Sept. 5, 2000

PAONIA - Mary Virginia Giovannine, age 86, a resident of Paonia for the last nine years, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in the Paonia Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Mary Virginia Ritchie, the daughter of (unknown) Ritchie and Angelina (Mormile) Ritchie, was born on Feb. 9, 1914, in Rockvale, Colo. She spent her childhood years in Rockvale and Florence, graduating from high school in Florence. Mary continued her education and received her teaching degree in Greeley.

Mary was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Dan Giovannine in 1954 at Canon City, Colo. Mary and Dan established their home in Canon City. Dan preceded his wife in death in 1963.

Mary lived most of her life in Canon City and worked as a school teacher until her retirement in 1978. She moved to Paonia nine years ago where she remained until the time of her death.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Canon City.

Survivors very grateful to share Mary's life include one daughter, Rose Marie Williams, of Paonia; and one grandson, Buddy Williams, of Denver.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was also preceded in death by one sister.

Services will be held at a later date.

Joan W. Stark

Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother

1938 - 2000

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Hotchkiss resident and former Montrose rancher, Joan W. Stark, age 61, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in Rockville, Md.

Joan J. Weiss was born in Manhattan, N.Y., in 1938 and raised in Chappaqua, N.Y. She attended Skidmore College and Pace University, and worked for Revlon in New York before moving to Montrose in 1983 to enjoy the less hurried pace of sheep and cattle ranching in Colorado.

Joan married David D. Stark, an artist from Olathe, in 1996, and they relocated to Hotchkiss.

During her time in Colorado, Joan worked for Alpine Data, a software company; performed with Spring Creek, a bluegrass band; volunteered for the Montrose Redcoats; and was co-owner of Shippers' Supply, a shipping company.

Joan loved the ocean especially the North Carolina shore, art and antiques, music, and her family particularly her grandchildren, a tremendous source of pride and joy. She loved to travel and enjoyed wonderful trips to Tahiti and Costa Rica in early 2000.

Survivors very grateful to share Joan's life include her husband, David Stark; her two sons: Ken Knox, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Tom Knox, of Chevy Chase, Md.; and five precious grandchildren: Audrey, Teddy, Liam, Susannah, and Betsy.

Other family survivors includes one brother, Douglas Weiss, of Redding, Conn.

A Memorial Service in loving remembrance and to honor Joan's life will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Baldridge Park in Montrose.

Janella Ruth Tate

Loved Tap Dancing

Aug. 20, 1938 Sept. 4, 2000

DELTA Janella Ruth Tate, age 62, of Delta, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in Olathe.

Janella Ruth McKelvy, the daughter of John and Ethel (Hilton) McKelvy, was born on Aug. 20, 1938, in Chickasha, Okla., where she spent her early childhood years. She moved to Gunnison as a young girl and graduated from the Gunnison High School with the class of 1956. Janella continued to pursue her education and attended Western State College in Gunnison, receiving her Bachelor's degree in 1964 and in 1966 she earned her Master's degree from Western State College.

Janella moved from Gunnison to Pacheco, Calif., in 1972 where she made her home until 1977 when she moved to Delta. While living in Delta, she owned and operated the Executive Sweet Coffee Shop for many years. Following that endeavor, Janella worked as a secretary for many different businesses in Delta until the time of her retirement.

Her marriage ended in divorce.

She was a member of the Rosemont Baptist Church in Montrose, the Delrose Chapter of Sweet Adelines, and the Park Avenue Dance Studio in Montrose.

Among the many loves in Janella's life that brought her happiness and satisfaction were Tole painting, tap dancing, singing, and researching her family history.

Janella was incredibly organized and had a great sense of humor. She had the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. Janella was so warm and full of life and has left this world a much better place because she was here and deeply touched the lives of all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors very grateful to share Janella's life include her daughter, Dixie Phelaine and husband Mead Serra, of Montrose; and one grandson, Niko.

Other family survivors include one brother, Delmer McKelvy and wife Betty, of Fruita; and two sisters: Ramonia and husband Crandall Howard, of Olathe; and Bettye and husband Russ Weaver, of Gunnison.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel McKelvy.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Janella's life will be officiated by Larry Short on Friday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.

Rose Mary Herman

Immigrate from Russia

Aug. 25, 1910 - Oct. 9, 2000

MONTROSE - Rose Mary Herman, age 90, of Montrose, died early Monday morning, Oct. 9, 2000, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.

Rose Mary Beiber was born in Rothammel, Russia, on Aug. 25, 1910, the daughter of Jacob and Christina Distel-Beiber.

In 1913, Jacob, Christina, and their three children: Jacob, Katherine, and Rose, immigrated to the United States.

In 1929, Rose married Joseph Herman of Ellis, Kan.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors grateful to share Rose's life include six children: Evelyn Hadley, Rosalie Ady, Gerald Herman, Sherrie McComb, all of Montrose; Josephine Jackson, of Colorado Springs; and Jim Herman, of Idaho.

Rose was the proud and loving grandmother of 27 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one sister, Catherine Borgfeld, of Oklahoma; and her half brothers and sisters: Eleanor Kinsey, Victoria Hayes, Joseph Beiber, Edward Beiber, Christine Gray, Mary McKean, and Louise Brown.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; two children: Joseph Jr. and Jack; one brother, Jacob; and three half brothers: Anthony, Benjamin, and Jonathan Beiber.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Rose's life will be officiated by The Rev. Dan Huber on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. Honorary pallbearers will be Tonia McComb, Richard Randall and Ronald Herman. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Cremation will follow the service.

Daniel Merrill Clawson

Known as "Internet Dan"

Oct. 18, 1952 - Oct. 9, 2000

MONTROSE - Daniel Merrill Clawson, age 47, an electrician and resident of Montrose since 1997, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 9, 2000, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose, nine days before he would have celebrated his 48th birthday.

Daniel Clawson, the son of Daniel and Marie (Gielse) Clawson, was born on Oct. 18, 1952, in Sacramento, Calif., where he spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood. He continued to further his education for a year and a half at college in Sacramento.

He served his country in the United States Army.

Daniel lived in Eugene, Ore., where he worked as a drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselor. He then moved to Tulsa, Okla., where he lived before moving to Montrose in 1997, making his home here until the time of his death.

Daniel met Patricia Lynn Garcia on the internet and they were married on Aug. 7, 1999, in Montrose. Daniel was known around town as "internet Dan."

Among the loves in Daniel's life that brought him happiness and contentment were computers, remote control airplanes, and fishing. Daniel's death has left a huge unwanted emptiness in the lives of all those who knew and loved him, and he will be deeply missed.

Survivors very grateful to share Daniel's life include his wife, Pat Clawson, of Montrose; two sons: Jonathon Clawson and Michael Clawson; one daughter, April Clawson, all of Tulsa, Okla.; and two precious grandchildren.

Other family survivors include his parents, Daniel and Marie Clawson, of Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers: Ken Clawson, of Arizona; Tom Clawson, of Sacramento, Calif.; and one sister, Christine Komoroski, of Texas.

Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Daniel's life will be officiated on Friday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pat Clawson to help defray the cost of the funeral, c/o Montrose Valley Funeral Home, 505 S. 2nd St., Montrose, CO 81401.

Joyce Darlene James

Loved Family, Poodles

May 24, 1926 - Oct. 10, 2000

MONTROSE - Joyce Darlene James, age 74, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, 2000, at her home in Montrose.

Joyce Darlene Goree, the daughter of Arthur Ray Goree and Harriet Pearl (Boyles) Goree, was born on May 24, 1926, in Hayden, Colo., where she spent her childhood years, graduated from the Hayden High School, and grew to adulthood.

Joyce was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Albert Neil "Bob" James on June 4, 1945, in Portland, Ore. Bob and Joyce had shared 44 wonderful years of marriage at the time of Bob's death in October of 1989, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

In April of 1998, she moved from Denver to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death.

Above all, the love and joy of Joyce's life was her family and children. A favorite pastime which brought her enjoyment was various hand crafts, along with her love of poodles.

Survivors very grateful to share Joyce's life include one son, Grady James and wife Linda, of Wheat Ridge; and two precious grandchildren: Susan Sabrina and husband Jason Bergtold, of Virginia; and David Mason James, of Wheat Ridge.

Other family survivors include one brother, Charles James "Jay" Goree, of Orlando, Fla.; and one sister, Edna Steffen, of Montrose.

Along with her husband, Bob, Joyce was also preceded in death by both of her parents.

At Joyce's request, cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be held in the Ft. Logan National Cemetery at Denver.

Mary A. Gaunt

Mountain Bell Operator 25 Yrs.

March 14, 1925 - Oct. 9, 2000

MONTROSE - Mary A. Gaunt, age 75, a resident of Montrose since 1962, died Monday morning, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home in Montrose.

Mary A. Donley, the daughter of Fred Donley and Georgia (Hobson) Donley, was born on March 14, 1925, in Montrose, Colo., where she spent her childhood years, graduated from Montrose County High School, and grew to adulthood.

Mary was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Galen Gaunt on Sept. 13, 1952, in Grand Junction. They were the parents of three sons and shared 32 years of marriage before Galen's death on Dec. 24, 1984, in Montrose.

Prior to her retirement, Mary was employed as an operator and then in the business office of the Mountain Bell Telephone Co. for 25 years.

In 1962, Mary and Galen moved from Delta to Montrose where they both lived until the times of their deaths.

She was a member and Past Matron of Silver Star Chapter No. 40, Order of the Eastern Star.

The greatest love of Mary's life was playing bridge. She treasured her family, children, and grandchildren.

Survivors very grateful to share Mary's life include three sons: Galen Gaunt, of Glennallen, Alaska; Michael Gaunt, of Montrose; Greg Gaunt and wife Beth, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and four precious grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, Fred "Fritz" Donley and wife Betty; one sister, Theodisia Duckett, all of Montrose; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband, Galen, Mary was also preceded in death by both of her parents.

Memorial Services to honor and celebrate Mary's life will be officiated by Paul Nystrom on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church. The service will conclude at the church.

Private family inurnment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose; (970) 249-2121.
