Sarah L. Montgomery

Sarah L. Montgomery died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 71.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Montgomery was born June 12, 1931, in Texline, Texas, to Monsie and Joyce Davis. She moved to Bayfield in the 1940s, and she was a graduate of Bayfield High School. She and her mother, Mom Davis, opened the Hi-Way Cafe in Bayfield which became a favorite stopping place for many locals and truck drivers.

She married Leonard Montgomery Dec. 16, 1955, in San Diego. Mrs. Montgomery was active in the Bayfield Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, oil painting and helping others.

"We would like to thank all the friends and family for their prayers, love and support during this time," said her daughter, Alma J. Evans.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include three daughters, Alma J. Evans of Bayfield, Leona Taylor of Colleyville, Texas, and Pattie VanGieson of Alamosa; one son, Burton Montgomery of Bayfield; one sister, Mary Joyce Montgomery of Bayfield; nine grandchildren, Blake and Nikkie Evans, Jerrod and Josh Taylor, Michael VanGieson, Andrea, Jessica, Ethan and Samuel Montgomery; five step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Bayfield. Mr. Gene Chapin will officiate. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary. Family will greet friends at 5 p.m. Friday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bayfield Church of Christ Children’s Programs.

Flora M. Stonehocker

Flora M. Stonehocker of Greeley died Sunday, May 18, 2003. She was 81.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Stonehocker was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Indian Gap, Texas, to Adolph O. and Mary Ann (Prescher) Marwitz. She married James J. Stonehocker in 1950 in Denver. She attended grade school and high school in Indian Gap, Texas. She attended Howard Payne Business College in Brownwood, Texas. Mrs. Stonehocker worked at Boeing Defense Plant during World War II in Ft. Worth Texas. She was a longtime resident of Durango.

Mrs. Stonehocker was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in LaSalle and Christ the King Church in Denver. She was a member of the Democratic Party.

Survivors include her husband, James J. Stonehocker; two sons, Dennis J. Stonehocker of Longmont and James J. Stonehocker of Englewood; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Prater of Littleton and Kathy R. Porter of Ft. Collins; three brothers, Ray Marwitz of Dallas, Melvin Marwitz of Brush and John Marwitz of Ft. Collins; two sisters, Delora Ticnor of Ft. Morgan and Maryann Taylor of Wheatridge; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Shepard of the Valley Lutheran Church in LaSalle.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Ft. Morgan.

Marguerite Augusta Rowe

Marguerite Augusta Rowe died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center of natural causes. She was 90.

Mrs. Rowe was born May 24, 1912, in the Florida Mesa area to Fred and Estella (Arndt) Griffith. She married Edgar A. Rowe in 1933 in Durango.

Mrs. Rowe was a lifelong resident of Durango and was a granddaughter of one of Durango’s first physicians, Dr. D. W. Griffith, who was hired by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. When she was younger, she enjoyed horseback riding and skiing. She enjoyed dancing and traveling. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, gardening and canning.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar on Aug. 27, 1969.

She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Sue Newberry of Westminster; two sons, Gordon Rowe of Vail and Kenneth Rowe of Durango, eight grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and one cousin.

A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday at the Rowe residence on Florida Road, 13636 County Road 240. Lunch will follow the services. Cremation occurred at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Frances Normera Barrett

Frances Normera Barrett, a lifelong Mancos resident, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 84.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Barrett was born March 9, 1919, in Durango to Frank and Dazarene (Kaufmann) Petty. She married James Allen Barrett on June 16, 1940, in Durango.

Mrs. Barrett spent her working life as a school teacher, teaching in the Arriola, Dolores and Mancos schools. She held a master’s degree.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in January 2000.

Survivors include two children, James F. Barrett of California and Susan Kuenzler of Cortez; five grandchildren, Kermitt Barrett of Durango, Natasha Reinhard of Northridge, Calif., Alesha Traylor of Bakersfield, Calif., Corinna Barrett of Redbluff, Calif., and Zane Kuenzler of Anchorage, Alaska; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Twers of Las Vegas, Nev., and Della Sanders of Aztec; and one brother, Jack Bossett of Culver City, Calif.

Memorial services are planned for a later date.

Memorial donations may be made on behalf of Frances Barrett with the Scott McComb Memorial Scholarship Fund with Vectra Bank.

Dorothy Marie Sage

Dorothy Marie Sage died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at her home in Ignacio. She was 52.

Ms. Sage was born Feb. 16, 1951, in Durango to Maurice and Colleen Sage. Ms. Sage grew up in Ignacio and graduated from Ignacio High School. She worked for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe at the motor pool for 27 years.

Ms. Sage enjoyed beading, reading, fishing, being outdoors, baking and cooking, gardening and taking trips.

Dominic Sage, her brother, said, "The family greatly appreciates everyone’s help and support in her final days. We especially thank her family and friends as they stood by her."

She was preceded in death by her father, Maurice Sage; three brothers, LeRoy, Sidney and Maurice Sage Jr.; and an infant daughter, Baby Sage.

Survivors include her mother, Colleen W. Sage of Ignacio; a sister, Leigh Sage of Ignacio; two brothers, Dominic Sage and Mike Sage, both of Ignacio; a daughter, India Sage of Ignacio; seven aunts, two uncles and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Burial will occur at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Wanda Carol McConnel

Wanda Carol McConnel, a longtime resident of Bayfield, died Friday, May 16, 2003, of natural causes at Mercy Medical Center. She was 65.

Mrs. McConnel was born April 26, 1938, in western La Plata County, the daughter of Clive and Fay Peterson.

She grew up and attended school in Bayfield and graduated from the local high school. She attended Fort Lewis College and Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley.

She married Jack McConnel on Jan. 11, 1974, in Aztec, N.M.

Mrs. McConnel was a telephone operator for many years and a devoted mother. She also helped her husband with a trucking company and with the family ranch.

"My mother was happiest when doing for others," said her son, Robert Cruse. "She never knew a stranger."

Mrs. McConnel enjoyed a variety of activities, including quilting and crocheting. She loved flowers and plants and the outdoors, especially the mountains where she lived.

Mrs. McConnel is survived by two sons, Robert Cruse of Durango and Michael Cruse of Amarillo, Texas; two stepsons, Bill McConnel and Doug McConnel of Bloomfield, N.M.; a brother, Noel Peterson of Durango; a sister, Hilda Wales of Albuquerque, N.M., and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1989.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dan Straw officiating. Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary in Durango.

Pauline J. Kelley

Pauline J. Kelley, a longtime Durango resident, died of natural causes Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at her home in Durango. She was 86.

Mrs. Kelley was born June 27, 1916, in Rialto, Calif., to Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby McKinley. She married Glenn Kelley, of Rialto, on June 17, 1938.

She moved to Durango in 1936. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, the changing of the seasons, and spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her son, John Kelley of Durango; her daughter, Janet Oliveira of Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

A private memorial service will be held Saturday in Durango.

Dotty Barnes

Dotty Barnes, a Bayfield resident, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, in her sleep on a Hawaiian cruise. She was 83.

Mrs. Barnes was born Dorothy Nadine Deming on April 27, 1920, in Kiowa during a blizzard.

She married Walter Eli Barnes in March 1941.

After his death in World War II, she married his brother, Eugene Mansel Barnes in May 1948.

She made baby quilts and doll clothes for the Community Hospital Auxiliary. She belonged to Pine River Valley Baptist Church.

"She touched every life she encountered with her caring, gentle and accepting warmth," said her daughter, Barbara Bushey. "She was a fun person."

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Michalski of Highland, Ind., and Barbara Bushey of Bayfield; six grandchildren, Gene Bushey of Bayfield, Kimberlie Herron of Andrews Air Force Base, Md., Kent Bushey of Fort Meade, Md., Brian Bushey of Thornton, Raymond Michalski of Elgin, Ill., and Michael Michalski of Valparaiso, Ind.; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth Deming of Gunnison; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Pine River Valley Baptist Church, four miles north of Ignacio on Colorado Highway 172.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District in Bayfield, or to the Volunteers of America, P.O. Box 2107, Durango CO 81301.

Volunteers of America requests a note that the donation is made in memory of Mrs. Barnes.

Claude Vincent Martin

Claude Vincent Martin, a lifelong Cortez community member, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. He was 81.

Mr. Martin was born on Oct. 3, 1921, in Goodman Point to Thomas Elbert and Margaret Elizabeth (Chastain) Martin.

He married Jean Rutherford on July 10, 1948, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Cortez.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the same church, where they were members.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Rotary Club, served as a director on the First National Bank board, was a former school board member and founded the Cortez Little League Association.

He is survived by is wife, of Cortez; a son, Russell Martin of Denver; two daughters, Claudia Martin of Woodland Park, and Carol Martin of Durango; five grandchildren, Sarah Drummond of Woodland Park, Ian Drummond of Loveland, Megan Nibley of Mesa, Ariz., Laurel Hatch of Bozeman, Mont., and Silas Hatch of Durango; and one sister, Edith Flanagan of Cortez.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

The Rev. Erika Meyer will officiate.

Memorial contributions can be made to a scholarship fund at First National Bank in Mr. Martin’s memory.
