Catherine Elizabeth Leimbach (10/12/2005)

Catherine Elizabeth Leimbach died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, in Albuquerque, N.M., following a long-term illness and very fulfilling life. Beth was born Aug. 12, 1917, to Frank Leroy and Pollie Elizabeth Gift in Balko, Okla.

Memorial services conducted by nephew, David Englehart, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at the Ertel Funeral Home, 42. N. Market St., Cortez, followed by interment at the Cortez Cemetery.

She spent her early years in Dove Creek and other areas of the West. She lived the past 30-plus years in Farmington and Los Lunas, N.M. Beth loved people and enjoyed her life’s work serving others as a waitress, and in the later years as cook and caretaker for the Saint Mary’s parish priests in Farmington. She was praised and valued for her dedication to their needs.

Beth loved to walk and put on many miles at the Hermosa Jr. High School track near her home in Farmington. She lived the past several years with and under the loving care of her daughter Pollie and grandson Philip. Beth will be remembered fondly for her sharp wit, thoughtfulness, radiant smile, and for all of her home and herbal remedies for “whatever ails you.” Beth is survived by sons, Arthur (Marion) and Fred Leimbach, and daughter Pollie Williams; grandsons, Philip, Joe, Jimmy, Michael, Jason, Robert, James; numerous great-grandsons and great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving her are her oldest brother, Jesse Gift, and youngest sister, Ruth Szuch.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Lena (Gift) Blevins and Lorene Velesta Gift, and brothers, Robert and Leroy Gift.

Memorial donations my be made to Alzheimers Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 6th floor, New York, NY 10001.

Rheba Kaye Flaugh (10/12/2005)

Memorial services for Cortez resident Rheba Kaye Flaugh will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Lifeway Baptist Church in Cortez. Pastor Jimmy Kennedy will officiate.

Rheba was born on May 19, 1950, in Sydney, Neb., the daughter of Earl Robert and Lucille Irene (Christofferson) Nelson. She died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home at the age of 55.

In 1968, Rheba graduated from high school in Blanding, Utah. She then married Garth Davies and with this union two daughters, Julie and Rachell, were born. Davies and Rheba were later divorced. In 1991, she married Don Flaugh. She loved his three children like they were her own. She was an active member of the Lifeway Baptist Church. It was very important to Rheba to help those in need. She greatly enjoyed feeding people, whether it is family members or the students of the Open High that participated in the Power Lunch Program. In her free time, Rheba could be found fishing, completing a needlepoint project or watching the Food Network.

Surviving Rheba are her husband, Don Flaugh of Cortez; her children, Julie Long and companion, Don Pinder, of Cortez, Rachell Chavarie and husband, Chris, of Grand Junction, Keegan Flaugh and wife, Melissa, of Denver, Colo., Erin Davidson and husband, Rod, of Florence, Colo., Shannon Thol and husband, Bart, of Cambridge, Mass.; her grandchildren, Garth and Andy Scott; Ashley Long, Caleb, Colton, and Colby Chavarie; Daelyn, Aidan, and Caitlyn Flaugh; Hailee and Harley Davidson; her siblings, Boyd Nelson and wife, Dutchie, of Bloomfield, N.M., Diana Nelson of Cortez, Danny Nelson and wife, Cheryl, and Tammy Kennedy and husband, James, all of Bloomfield, N.M., and Tommy Nelson and wife, Pam, of Bluewater, N.M.; her extended family, Brenda Henson and Marlene Romuar, both of Cortez; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Flaugh in death were her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lifeway Baptist Church to be forwarded on to support the Open High Power Lunch.

Faith Paige McDonald (10/12/2005)

Faith Paige McDonald entered eternal life Sept. 7, 2005, in Globe, Ariz. She was 3 months of age.

A private committal service was held at the Cortez Cemetery Columbarium.

Baby Faith blessed the world with her birth June 10, 2005, to Lucas and Leeann Edwards McDonald in Phoenix, Ariz.

With one look at her, she captured everybody’s hearts. Her big, blue eyes and a big smile brought complete joy to whomever saw Faith.

Faith Paige McDonald is survived by her parents, Luke and Leeann McDonald of Dolores; paternal grandparents, Larry McDonald of Dolores and Sonia Garcier of Aztec, N.M.; maternal grandparents, Vivian and Sarah Edwards of Worcester, England; great-grandmother Della Allen of Aztec, N.M.; paternal aunt, Lacy McDonald of Dolores, paternal uncle, Larmie McDonald of Reno, Nev., maternal aunt, Joanne Edwards of Worcester, England, and maternal uncle, John Edwards of Worcester, England.

The family is being served by Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale & Gerken.

Marilyn J. Cornett (10/12/2005)

Marilyn J. Cornett, a resident of Cortez, died Oct. 8, 2005, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 72.

A funeral service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, in the First Baptist Church of Cortez, located at 100 N. Market in Cortez. Pastor Ron Horne will officiate. Interment will follow the service in the Cortez Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made in Marilyn Cornett’s name to Hospice of Montezuma, P.O. Drawer 740, Cortez, CO 81321.

Cornett was born Nov. 28, 1932, to Walter A. and Inez M. Morgan Goodman in Barnes, Kan. Marilyn graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School. She married Joe Lloyd Cornett, and the couple was blessed with three children.

Cornett worked as a bookkeeper and new accounts specialist at First National Bank, Valley National Bank and Citizens State Bank, all of Cortez. Marilyn was dedicated to and very close with God. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cortez and prayed for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her congregation made arrangements for Marilyn to receive communion every month in her home, and she looked forward to visits from Pastor Ron and Elaine Horne. She donated to Kenneth Copeland and Feed the Children Charities.

Cornett enjoyed pottery hanging, arts and crafts, oil painting with landscapes being her favorite, and really enjoyed cooking big meals for the holidays. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and the women’s bowling league.

Marilyn J. Cornett is survived by her son James Scott Cornett and wife, Anne, of Cortez, son Donald Scott Cornett, of Cortez, daughter Terri Cornett-Rule, of Cortez, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, including identical twin great-granddaughters.

The family is being served by Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale & Gerken.

Lorine 'May' Kelley (10/11/2005)

A lifelong resident of Southwest Colorado, Lorine "May" Kelley, 74, died at her home in Durango on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005. The cause of death was atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and emphysema.

She was born in Cortez to Joe and Gladys (Bain) Wood on May 23, 1931. She was raised in Cortez. On Nov. 24, 1951, she married Millard Robbins in Grand Junction. The couple moved to Durango shortly thereafter. He preceded her in death in 1985.

Mrs. Robbins married Frank Kelley on Sept. 15, 1978 in Durango. He also preceded her in death.

She was a bartender for more than 30 years in Durango and made many friends throughout the community. Mrs. Kelley began her bartending career at Velma's Supper Club on north Main Avenue, before working at Paul Koss' The Villa Restaurant and the Full House (where the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory now stands.) She told stories of bartending at the Holiday Inn when the cast for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" stayed there.

Mrs. Kelley spent the last 10 years of her work life tending bar at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031, where she was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

In her spare time, Mrs. Kelley was an avid gardener. She grew a variety of tomatoes and her flower garden, where she particularly enjoyed raising roses and chrysanthemums, was beautiful. She also enjoyed crocheting, and almost everyone she knew received a blanket or a pillow.

Mrs. Kelley was a member of the New Life Chapel.

Her family said she was known for her generosity, hospitality and sense of humor. She lived life to the fullest, even through her illness.

In addition to her husbands, Mrs. Kelley was also preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Robbins.

Mrs. Kelley is survived by her son, Joseph Robbins of Grand Junction; daughters, Kathy Robbins of Durango, Cheryl Helart of Centennial and Sandra Johnson and Patricia Robbins, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Joseph Wood of East Carbon, Utah; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has occurred. A celebration of Mrs. Kelley's life will be held at New Life Chapel at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005. The Rev. Rebecca Swartzman will officiate.

Susan Joy Campbell (10/11/2005)

A resident of Hesperus, Susan Joy Campbell, 48, died at Four Corners Health Care Center on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005. The cause of death was not disclosed.

She was born to Ragnar Tommins and Marjorie Louise (Ringer) Peterson on Sept. 3, 1957, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

On Aug. 11, 1985, she married Jimmy Dale Campbell in Orlando, Fla.

Mrs. Campbell was an active member of New Life Chapel. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and fishing. The outdoors was also one of her passions.

She is survived by her husband Jimmy D. Campbell of Hesperus; children Rachel Lauren Campbell and Bradley Tyler Campbell, both of Hesperus; father and stepmother, Ragnar and Jean Peterson; and siblings Randall Alan Peterson and Cindy Strube, both of Orlando, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at New Life Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery. The Rev. Dwight Saunders will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Campbell's name at the Bank of Colorado, 1199 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Wade William Herrboldt (10/8/2005)

Devoted family man Wade William Herrboldt, 58, died in Silverton on Sunday, Oct 2, 2005.

The cause of death was injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.

He was born to Herbert and Shirley June Herrboldt in Columbia Heights, Minn., on June 23, 1947. He was raised in Minnesota, and in 1966, graduated from Lincoln High School in Bloomington, Minn. His mother and his sister, Lynn, both died when he was young.

Mr. Herrboldt enlisted in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of E-5. He volunteered for an extra tour in Vietnam, where he earned a letter of commendation and a Bronze Star.

While his family moved to Colorado in 1969, Mr. Herrboldt stayed in Minnesota, where he met and married Maxine Forester. After they started their family, he graduated from technical college as a machinist.

They later moved to Denver, then made their way to Durango, and finally, Ignacio.

While living in Southwest Colorado, he worked first at Kroeger’s Hardware Store and later at Zia River Corp. in Bayfield.

“He was very caring and compassionate,” said his son, William Herrboldt. “He would help everyone who asked.” Mr. Herrboldt is survived by his wife, Maxine Herrboldt of Ignacio; father and stepmother Herbert and Sherry Herrboldt of Bayfield; daughter Jennifer Strohfus of Thornton; son William Herrboldt of Durango; brother Michael Herrboldt of Washington; and two grandchildren.

Cremation has occurred.

Cathrine L. Kendall (10/8/2005)

Cathrine L. Kendall, 89, died at Four Corners Health Care Center on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005. The cause of death was complications from arthritis and osteoporosis.

She was born to John and Jane Luft in Sac City, Iowa, on May 16, 1916. When she was an 8-month-old, she moved with her mother and siblings to Pomona, Calif. She graduated from Pomona High School.

On July 26, 1937, she married Lyle H. Kendall in Las Vegas. The couple resided in Pomona until their retirement in 1978, when they moved to San Clemente, Calif.

Mrs. Kendall worked in retailing and as a bookkeeper for many years. After she and her husband retired, they enjoyed many years traveling in their motor home. They had an active social life, including many years in Pomona Elks Lodge No. 789, where Mrs. Kendall served as president of the Emblem Club.

She loved dancing with her husband. Mrs. Kendall also enjoyed sewing and crafts until her eyesight failed from macular degeneration.

Two years after her husband died in 1996, Mrs. Kendall moved to Durango to live with her daughter, Sheryl Andrews. Her family said she had a great relationship with her son-in-law, Bill Andrews, with lots of joking and teasing.

“What I’ll remember most,” said her daughter, Sheryl Andrews, “is how she adored babies and children. One of her greatest joys was the time she spent with her great-granddaughter, Lisa Nichols, who came to visit every summer from California.” Mrs. Kendall was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Lyle Kendall.

She is survived by her daughter Sheryl Andrews of Durango; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Cremation has occurred. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Norma Jean Meador (10/7/2005)

A Southwest Colorado resident on and off during her life, Norma Jean Meador, 55, died at Mercy Medical Center on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005. The cause of death was not disclosed.

She was born to JT and Loraine Chivers Lewellen in Roundup, Mont., on Feb. 16, 1950.

Her family moved to Southwest Colorado in 1958, and she graduated from Durango High School in 1968.

After high school, she attended cosmetology school and got her certification. For the next 20 years, she worked as a hairdresser in several Arizona communities.

She married Wink Meador. The marriage was later dissolved.

Mrs. Meador moved back to this area in 1989, living in Bayfield.

She owned and operated The Scissor Wizard there until her death.

Her favorite pastimes included crocheting and fishing. She was an avid football fan, rooting for her favorite team, the Denver Broncos.

“She was outgoing,” said her daughter, Frances Hott. “She was so giving, the type of person who would give you the shirt off your back.” Mrs. Meador donated her body to medical science.

She is survived by her life partner, Gerald Hicks of Bayfield; sons Gilbert Meador of Aztec and Bryan Meador of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter Frances Hott of Ignacio; father and mother JT and Loraine Lewellen of Vernal, Utah; brother Rick Lewellen of Whidby Island, Wash.; sister Nila Jean Rieding of Nacogdoches, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Vallecito Community Center.

The Rev. Jennings Hamilton of the Calvary Baptist Church in Bloomfield, N.M., will officiate.
