Miller, Hubert - - (1913 - 2004)

Hubert Charles Miller, a lifelong North Fork resident, died on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was 90.

A funeral service was held on April 5, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in
Delta, with Leslie White officiating. Interment followed at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Crawford.
Mr. Miller was born on June 13, 1913, on Rogers Mesa, to John Edgar and Effie M. (Russell) Miller. He spent his childhood and attended school at Rogers Mesa and Lazear. He moved to Crawford in 1936, living there until 1965, when he moved to the Hotchkiss area.

He married Octavia Filener on July 14, 1942, in Delta. They celebrated 61 years of marriage. She survives.

Mr. Miller was a farmer. He was a salesman for 37 years for Bolinger and Queen in Hotchkiss. He worked as a ditch rider for Fruitland Mesa Ditch until 2002. He enjoyed arrowhead collecting, polishing rocks, reading western books and operating a lapidary shop.

He is survived by his wife, Octavia Miller of Hotchkiss; three sons, George L. Miller of Delta, Charles Allen Miller and his wife Shari of East Muddy, and Gregg F. Miller and his wife Kathy of Bennett; a daughter and her husband, Cyndi and John Cotten of Lazear; 13 grandchildren; and six great - grandchildren.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by an infant daughter and four brothers, Ivan Miller, Fred Miller, Edgar Miller and Allen Miller.

Norris, Allen - - (1915 - 2004)

Allen A. Norris of Ridgway died on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Montrose Memorial Hospital. He was 89.

He was born on March 8, 1915, in Somerset, to James E. and Myrtle F. (Heberling) Norris. He spent his childhood in Somerset. Mr. Norris served in the United States National Guard and then the U.S. Army from Sept. 20, 1941, to Nov. 1, 1945. He married Mathe A. Toniolli. She survives. Mr. Norris was a rancher and worked in several power plants around Paonia, Somerset and Telluride. Before retiring, he worked as an electrician in southern Colorado and Utah, including Moab, Silverton and Lake City. He built several pelton wheel generators around Telluride. He moved to Ridgway in 1971. He is survived by his wife, Mattie A. Norris of Ridgway; a stepson and his wife, Paul B. and Shorty McDonald of Farmington, N.M.; three sisters - in - law, Anne Norris, Dorothy Norris and Eula Norris, all of Paonia; two nieces, Bonnie and Cythia; and five nephews, Gary, John, Jim, Ken and Ron. Mr. Norris was preceded in death by four brothers, George Norris, Ed Norris, Bert Norris and Jess Norris. Crippin Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Overman, Wilbur - - ( - - - - - 2004)

Wilbur Overman of Austin died on Monday, March 29, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. He was 86.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 10, at 10:30 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia.

Mr. Overman is survived by his wife, Suzette Overman of Austin; a son, Dr. Irving Overman of Henderson, Nev.; a daughter, Lori Anne Julian of Grand Junction; his mother - in - law, Lucille Roberts of Clifton; two stepsons, John Erikson of Tennessee, and Gary Erikson of Delta County; a brother, Elwood Overman of Washington state; and four sisters, Ruth Roe of Mankato, Kan., Esther Soule of Oklahoma City, Okla., Rachel Baker of Ashland, Kan., and Edith Schlichting of Meade, Kan.

Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory is handling the arrangements.

Ruble, Osban - - ( - - - - - 2004)

Osban Ellis Ruble, formerly of Hotchkiss, died of lung cancer on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at his residence. He was 80.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 7, at Fort Logan National Military Cemetery in Denver.

Mr. Ruble is survived by his wife, Maurine Ruble; a son, Wade Ruble of Leadville; a daughter, Janice Cooper of Lazear; two stepdaughters, Kathleen of Lakewood, and Colleen of Cruton on the Hudson, N.Y.; a stepson, John of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.

Savage, Martha - - (1910 - 2004)

Martha Phoebe Savage, a lifetime Paonia resident, died on Wednesday, April 1, 2004, at Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was 94.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m. at Crawford United Methodist Church with James Gall officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Crawford.

Ms. Savage was born on Jan. 1, 1910, in Hamburg, Ark., to Leslie J. and Sallie L. Savage. When she was six, she and her family moved to western Colorado, where they lived in a log cabin on Crystal Creek. She moved to Crawford in 1918, and graduated from Crawford High School. She graduated from Western State College in Gunnison in 1931, with a degree in education. She obtained a certificate in administration from Northwestern University.

She was an English teacher in a one - room school in Hopper, a principal of Hotchkiss High School, and Delta County superintendent of schools for 27 years. She reorganized the school district to encompass Delta, Gunnison, Montrose and Mesa counties. She also taught English literature in Hotchkiss for seven years. She retired in 1967. She moved from Crawford to Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center in 1998.

Ms. Savage enjoyed reading and volunteered with the Crawford Community Library. She was a member of Crawford United Methodist Church, served as the grand matron of the Order of Eastern Star, was Crawford's Pioneer Queen in 1982, and marshal of the Delta County Fair parade in August 1991. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Western State College in 1988. She was a lifelong Democrat. In 1940 she accompanied her father to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he was a candidate.

Ms. Savage and her sisters donated the Savage Bells to the Delta County Historical Society. They can still can be seen and heard at the museum. She enjoyed music and was active in various music organizations. She sang with the women's choral group at Western State College and at many local events.

She is survived by two nieces, Sallie Haugh of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jerene Jex and her husband Earl of Bloomington, Minn.; a nephew and his wife, Leslie and Marilyn Hagie of Shoreview, Minn.; four great - nieces, Markeah Jex, Traci Hagie, both of Denver, Dasha Jex of Fremont, Calif., and Niesha Stidger of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a great - nephew, Kevin Hagie of Charlottville, Va.; and a great - great - niece, Annika Backlund of Eden Prairie, Minn.

Ms. Savage was preceded in death by two sisters and their husbands, Annie Laura and Harold Richardson, and Leslie Janie and Fred E. Hagie.

Sylvain, Clara - - (1931 - 2004)

Clara "June" Sylvain of Paonia died on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Paonia Care Center. She was 72.

A funeral Mass was held on April 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia, with Father Bill Nelson officiating.

Mrs. Sylvain was born on Sept.. 18, 1931, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Clara and Herbert Lexow. She attended business school in Tampa, Fla.

She married Russell Sylvain. He survives. Her husband joined the U.S. Air Force.

They moved to Cripple Creek in the 1970's, where she became known as "Madam" June, a tour guide at the Old Homestead Museum, a one - time house of ill repute. She moved to Paonia in 1991.

Mrs. Sylvain enjoyed hiking, singing, gardening, animals, especially cats, holidays, aerobics, thrift stores, painting furniture, reading gory novels, watching romantic movies, singing in the choir and drawing with pen and ink. She was elected to the Cripple Creek town council in the late 1980s. She moved to Paonia in 1991.

She is survived by her husband, Russ Sylvain; two sons, Russell Sylvain and his wife Amy, and Michael David Sylvain, all of Colorado Springs; a daughter, Diane Sylvain of Paonia; a grandson, Nathan Sylvain of Colorado Springs; and a brother, Herbert Lexow of Jacksonville, Fla.

Mrs. Sylvain was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Sylvain.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society, High Country News in Paonia, or the Blue Sage Center in Paonia.

Werth, Bill - (1916 - 2004)

William "Bill" Werth of Crawford died on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was 87.
A funeral service was held on April 6, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, with James Gall officiating.

Mr. Werth was born on Aug. 15, 1916, in Seattle, Wash., to Matt and Louisa (Berkmeier) Werth. He spent his childhood in Seattle, Wash. He graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, Calif. In 1992, he moved from California to Delta County.

He served in the U.S. Air Corps.

Mr. Werth married Evangeline Hunt on March, 26, 1947, in Glendale, Calif. She died on Dec. 18, 2003, in Crawford.

He was an airplane mechanic, working on jet aircraft until retiring in the 1970s. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, traveling and spending his winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Mr. Werth is survived by his daughter, Marsha Werth of Crawford; a daughter - in - law, Linda Werth of Bozeman, Mont.; a brother and his wife, Richard and Ruth Werth of Arizona; six grandchildren, Jennifer Palecki, Chris Palecki and his wife Danielle, and Vicki Beiriger and her husband Edward, all of Crawford, Jon Palecki of Maryland Heights, Mo., Shauna Werth of Bozeman, Mont., and Matt Werth and his wife Jenny of Alexandria, Va.; and eight great - grandchildren, Nathan, Shaun - tell, Leah, Christa, Ryan, Alyssa and Jacob, all of Crawford, and Sidney of Alexandria, Va.

Boots Johnston - - 1932 - 2004

Eula Maye "Boots" Johnston of Aurora died on Wednesday, June 5, 2004, at the Reche Ca–on Care Center in Ontario, Calif. She was 69.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 12, at 5:30 p.m. at Horan & McConaty in Aurora, with Father Mark Bettinger of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta officiating.

Mrs. Johnston was born on Oct. 30, 1932, in Ft. Smith, Ark., to Ed and Essie (Eula) Newton. She spent her early childhood and attended school in Ft. Smith, Ark. She lived in Aurora for several years before moving to Ontario, Calif.

She was a secretary for Gateway High School in Aurora for 20 years. She enjoyed painting, fishing, and playing poker with the girls.

Mrs. Johnston is survived by a son and his wife, Cameron and Janette Johnston of Eckert; a daughter, Claudette Pfeiler of San Antonio, Texas; and four grandchildren, Courtney Pfeiler of San Antonio, Texas, Grace Julia Mae Johnston, Jake Copeland and Tom Copeland, all of Eckert.

Dessa Dove - - 1932 - 2004

Dessa Lavene Dove, formerly of Austin, died of a lingering illness on June 3, 2004, at her home in Castle Rock. She was 71.

Mrs. Dove was born on Dec. 3, 1932, at her family home in Austin, to Arch and Winnie (Kehl) Hawker. She attended Fairview Grade School and graduated from Delta High School in 1950.

She married Stanley Dove on Nov. 10, 1950, in Hotchkiss. He survives. They moved to Long Beach, Calif. In 1958 they moved to Littleton and then to Castle Rock.

Mrs. Dove is survived by her husband, Stanley Dove; a son, Tom Dove of Thornton; a daughter and her husband, Debra and John Noe of Cedaredge; three sisters, Catherine Marsh of Sacramento, Calif., Marjorie Scholl of Acampo, Calif., and Mary Lou Huerkamp and her husband Thomas of Austin; a brother, Wayne Hawker of Parshall; a granddaughter and her husband, Shay Lynn and Gene McComas of Castle Rock; two great - grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A graveside service for the cremains burial will be held on Saturday, July 10, at Cory Cemetery.
