Andrew Duff

Andrew James Duff, 74, of Brookfield, a native of Greenwich, died Sunday, Sept. 28, at Danbury Hospital.
He died of a heart attack, according to his family.
Mr. Duff retired from Marcus Dairy in Danbury, where he worked as a milkman for 20 years.
Born Nov. 27, 1928, in Greenwich, he was a son of the late George and Helen Doeberl Duff.
Mr. Duff served with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1948 to 1954.
He was a graduate of Greenwich High School.
Mr. Duff was a self-taught historian and economist. He enjoyed fishing, operating short-wave radios and reading. He loved his 1964 and 2002 Corvettes.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sandra Duff of Brookfield; four daughters, Sherry D. Duff-Cice and Laurie D. Duff, both of Brookfield, Wendy D. Johnson of Danbury, and Mimi D. Duff of London; a brother, George Duff of Greenwich; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Duff; and two sisters, Katherine Carr and Mary McDermott.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Central Cemetery, 450 Federal Road, Brookfield.

Francis Van Deventer

Francis H. Van Deventer, 92, of Greenwich, died Thursday, Sept. 18, at his home.
He died of natural causes, according to his family.
Mr. Van Deventer was an executive of the General Foods Corp. for 20 years, before retiring in 1972.
Mr. Van Deventer began his business career with IBM Corporation in 1932 before moving to the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency. Later, he worked for Hewitt and Ogilvy in New York.
Born Sept. 19, 1911, in Passaic, N.J., he was the son of the late William and Irma Van Deventer.
Mr. Van Deventer graduated from The Gunnery in Washington , Conn.
During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations for Air.
He was a member of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club and a former member of the Round Hill Club, the Mill Reef Club and the Coral Beach Club.
He is survived by his wife, Audrie Hobbs Van Deventer of Greenwich; two sons, Peter Van Deventer of Kinnelon, N.J., and Warren Van Deventer of Weston; a stepson, Edward Thaxter of Stamford; a stepdaughter, Harriette Irvine of White Bear Lake, Minn.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, Greenwich.
Burial will be private.

Bruce R. Petersen

Bruce Royal Petersen, 80, of the Landings in Savannah, Ga., a former Greenwich resident, died Thursday, Sept. 4, at his home.
He died of cancer, according to his family.
Mr. Petersen worked at the Continental Can Co. as a division vice president in cities throughout the United States. He later served as vice president of Sonoco Products and worked at Robert Heller Associates.
Born Oct. 3, 1922, in Atlanta, he was the son of the late LeRoy A. and Helga Anderson Petersen.
Mr. Petersen grew up in Pelham, N.Y., and Greenwich. He graduated from the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville and from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., in 1944.
He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, graduating from the Columbia Midshipman's School in New York City and serving four years as a lieutenant l.g. in the Pacific Theater. Two of those years were spent at sea on the destroyer USS Twining. He was among the first volunteers to serve in the Port Directors Office in Yokasuka during the occupation of Japan.
Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Petersen graduated from Harvard Business School.
Prior to his move to Savannah, he lived in New Canaan with his wife, Jill Gillespie Petersen of Savannah. In New Canaan, he served on the board of the United Way and was president of the New Canaan chapter of A Better Chance Inc., a national organization that educates minority youth in preparation for college admission. He also volunteered at the Waveny Care Center in New Canaan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stephen Petersen of Hockessin, Del.; a sister, Joan P. Walworth of Greenwich; and a grandson.
He was predeceased by a son, David Petersen.
A memorial service was held Sept. 12 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 3 Westridge Road, Savannah.

Elizabeth Light

Elizabeth A. Light, 88, of Powder Springs, Ga., a former longtime resident of Port Chester, N.Y., died Friday, Sept. 19, at Cobb Hospital in Austell, Ga.
She died of a heart attack and a stroke, according to her daughter, Debbie Green of Acworth, Ga.
Mrs. Light was a homemaker.
Born May 20, 1915, in Greenwich, she was a daughter of the late August and Frances Bock Havelka.
Mrs. Light was raised and educated in Byram. In 1978 she left Port Chester and lived in Orlando, Fla., and Houston before settling in Powder Springs, where she lived for the last four years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port Chester, a member of the Our Lady of Mercy PTA, a member of the Czechoslovak Society of America, and a bowler for many years at Ridge Bowl.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Light is survived by a son, Ernest Light of Dunnellon, Fla.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph E. Light, in 1988; a daughter, Betty Ann Vinci; four brothers, Charles, Ted, August and Frank Havelka; and two sisters, Frances Baker and Agnes Heminway.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Craft Memorial Home, 40 Leicester St., Port Chester.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 260 Westchester Ave., Port Chester.
Burial will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, 1 High St., Rye Brook, N.Y.

Catherine Y. Close

Catherine Yoder Close, 59, a teacher and dental hygienist who lived in Cos Cob, died Friday, Sept. 19, at Greenwich Hospital.
She died of breast cancer, according to her family.
Born June 12, 1944, in Canton, Ohio, she was a daughter of Catherine Tope Yoder of Sarasota, Fla., and the late Fred C. Yoder.
Ms. Close was an assistant professor at State University of New York in Farmingdale, N.Y., from 1969 to 1976 and an assistant professor at Middlesex Community College in New Jersey from 1977 to 1978.
While in Greenwich, she was a member of the Garden Club and a vice president of the Junior League of Greenwich. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed swimming and tennis.
Ms. Close graduated from Briarcliff College in 1963, received her bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1965, and received her master's degree in dental hygiene from the University of Michigan in 1968.
In addition to her mother, Ms. Close is survived by two daughters, Christina C. Close of Dedham, Mass., and Karen L. Close of Sarasota; a brother, Douglas Rex Yoder of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister, Patricia Arney of Sicklerville, N.J.; and a nephew.
A memorial service will be held at Stanwich Congregational Church at a date to be announced.
