George A. Cannan

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- George A. Cannan, 81, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Wallingford died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret Cairns Cannan.

He was born May 4, 1919, in West Haven, a son of the late John and Lucy Williams Cannan, graduated from West Haven High School and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He retired from the United Illuminating Co., in 1981 and had resided in Florida since 1982.

Mr. Cannan is survived by daughters, Lucille Burkell (Richard) of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla., and Beverly Dombroski (Richard) of Houston; grandsons, Scott Burkell of Wethersfield, Thomas Burkell of Lawrenceville, Ga., Richard Dombroski Jr., of Houston and Derek Dombroski of San Antonio, Texas ; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, William and John Cannan of Connecticut.

Funeral services will be held at Beaverdale Memorial Park, Hamden, Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, 493 Whitney Ave., New Haven, Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the Hope Hospice, 9470 Health Park Circle, Ft. Myers, FL 33908.

Marjorie W. Franklin

WALLINGFORD -- Marjorie Wason Franklin, 78, of Wallingford, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the Brook Hollow Health Care Center in Wallingford. She was the wife of Francis A. Franklin.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service, Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Wallingford, 941 Old Rock Hill Road in Wallingford. Interment in the In Memoriam Cemetery will be private. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution in Mrs. Franklin's name to your favorite children's organization or charity. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford, CT.

Michael D. Strange

CHESHIRE -- Michael D. Strange, 63, of Cheshire, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of Janet (Fracchia) Strange.

Mr. Strange was born Oct. 11, 1937, in Manchester, a son of the late T. Everett and Lila (Dennler) Strange and had lived in Cheshire since 1967. He was a graduate of Manchester High School and received his bachelor's degree in business. He was the president of Delivery Point Services in Hartford, where he worked along with his sons and sons-in-law. He was the president of the National Association of Pre-Sort Mailers for many years. Mr. Strange was a communicant of St. Bridget's Church. He was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Besides his wife, he leaves his two sons, Jeffrey M. Strange of Cheshire and Glenn D. Strange of Glastonbury; two daughters, Marcy Strange of Glastonbury and Loryn Watkinson of Cheshire; a brother, Thomas Strange of Ashford; six grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the Slater Funeral Home, 242 S. Main St., to St. Bridget's Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450.

Peter Barakos

MERIDEN -- Peter Barakos, 79, husband of the late Nonda "Dee" Zipoli Barakos, formerly of 85 Lanouette St., died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in the Westfield Care and Rehab Center.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., July 22, 1921, he was a son of the late James and Stella Rallis Barakos, he was a resident of Meriden most of his life. Mr. Barakos retired from the Meriden Board of Education as head custodian of John Barry School after 29 years of employment. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

He is survived by his beloved sons and daughters-in-law, Peter A. and Paula Ramondetta Barakos and James G. and Kathy Roy Barakos, all of Meriden; also his beloved grandson, Peter R. Barakos of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Diamond Barakos.

His funeral service will begin Friday, Feb. 23, with visitation in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Meriden, at 9 a.m. with a procession to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for his 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial. He will be interred with military honors in Sacred Heart Cemetery. His family respectfully requests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, South Central Connecticut Chapter, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06514, to help find a cure.

Mary S. Bartulis

CROMWELL -- Mary Sharrie Bartulis, 89, wife of John F. Bartulis, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Cromwell Crest.

She was born in Middletown, a daughter of the late Raphael and Antonia (Tomassone) Sharrie. She was a member of the Emblem Club. Prior to her retirement she was employed by the State of Connecticut for many years.

Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Sandra Munoz and son-in-law, John of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Joseph Amato of Cromwell and Theodore Amato of New Jersey; a stepdaughter, Judith Bulmer and son-in-law, Fred of Durham; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Lynndel Bartulis of Cheshire; as well as several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Sharrie; and three sisters, Nellie Mastergeorge, Lucy Zimmitta and Rose Tomassone.

Private graveside services will be held at the request of the family at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Meriden. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the D'Angelo Funeral Home, 22 S. Main St., Middletown.

Anthony J. Bykowski Jr.

MERIDEN -- Anthony Joseph Bykowski Jr., 84, formerly of Williams St., died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Meriden Center.

Born Dec. 21, 1916, in Westfield, Mass., he was the son of the late Anthony and Stanislawa (Borawski) Bykowski. Mr. Bykowski came to Meriden as a child and was educated in local schools. He served in the 804th Medical Air Evacuation Squadron Army of the United States during World War II and was retired from Pratt & Whitney. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.

He is survived by a sister, Stella Woronick of Meriden; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Anne Rychlec, Josephine Milewski and Mary Jurek; and a brother, Joseph Bykowski.

His funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, at 9:15 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., and at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mary A. Greene

MERIDEN -- Mary Adams Greene, 98, beloved sister of George Adams passed away on Feb. 20, 2001, at the Meriden Nursing Home.

Mrs. Greene was born on Jan. 23, 1903, in Sheffield, Pa., and was a daughter of the late John and Ann Adams. She was employed with the Telephone Company for many years.

In addition to her brother, George, she is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. The Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home, 2189 Barnum Ave., Stratford, will be in charge of arrangements.

Charles E. Lyman III

MIDDLEFIELD -- Charles E. Lyman III, 80, of Baileyville Road, Middlefield, husband of the late Pearl (Green) Lyman, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown.

Born in Middlefield, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Jeanette (Sparrow) Lyman Jr. Mr. Lyman was a lifelong resident of Middlefield and attended the Middlefield school system; graduated from Wilbraham Academy in 1938 and attended Virginia Military Institute. He joined Lyman Gun Sight in 1940 and became president in 1964. He was an avid rifle shooter and competitor and was owner/operator of the Blue Trail Range until 1990. He was active in the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department, and was on the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association, for 20 years.

He is survived by a dear companion, Betty Olson of Middletown; three sons, Charles E. Lyman IV of Chester, Wallace Lyman Sr. of Wallingford and David Lyman of Meriden; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a brother, Robert Lyman; and two sisters, Margaret Lyman and Jean Jenkins.

Funeral services will be held at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Dale Azevedo will officiate and interment will follow in Middlefield Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, of Connecticut, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450 or the National Rifle Association, Foundation, c/o Firearm and Marksmanship Endowment Fund, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, Va., 22030.

Jennie M. Melillo

WALLINGFORD -- Jennie M. Zuk (Moranti) Melillo, 85, of Meriden, died at the Skyview Nursing Home in Wallingford on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001.

Jennie retired from the Napier Co. in Meriden, where she worked assembling jewelry. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Meriden and active in many community projects in Meriden with her late husband Manual Moranti, who was a former member of the Town Council in Meriden.

Jennie is survived by her two brothers, Peter Zuk of Wallingford and Paul Zuk of Allentown, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Zuk Kolodzie; and two former husbands, Manuel Moranti and Pasquale Melillo.

A funeral of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Meriden. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation in Jennie's name.

Esther L. Smith

WALLINGFORD -- Esther L. Smith, 98, of the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, formerly of East Wallingford, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001. She was the wife of the late Robert A. Smith.

She was born in Wallingford, Dec. 2, 1902, a daughter of the late George H. and Annie Becroft Leete. She graduated from the Muddy River School in Wallingford and was the second oldest farm woman from East Wallingford. She was a member of the Ruth Hart Chapter #6, Daughters of the American Revolution and Mispah Chapter No. 37 Order of Eastern Star of Wallingford, the Royal Order of the Crown, and the Magna Carta Dames.

She is survived by four daughters, Barbara Austin of Wallingford, Marion Taylor of West Yarmouth, Mass., Dorothy Boschen of Attleboro, Mass., and Olive Tower of Deep River; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Robert Taylor.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., Wallingford. Burial will be at New Cemetery in Northford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. If friends so desire, gifts in her memory may be made to the Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust, P.O. Box 369, Wallingford, CT 06492, or the Wallingford Land Trust, P.O. Box 611, Wallingford, CT 06492.
