Lillian B. May

WALLINGFORD -- Lillian B. May, 82, of 53 S. Orchard St., died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Hartford Hospital.

She was born in New Haven, June 28, 1918, a daughter of the late Oliver and Lillian Van Tassell Brown. Until her retirement, she worked as a clerk for the Wallingford Board of Education Maintenance Department. She was a lifelong resident of Wallingford and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Major Raoul Lufbery Post No. 591 VFW Auxiliary, both of Wallingford.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Pat Brown and David and Barbara May, both of Meriden; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Sal Saturno of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a sister, Harriet Allison of Wallingford; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a niece, Carol Wilson of Jasper, Fla.

A graveside service will be private at the In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. There are no calling hours. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., is in charge of arrangements. If friends so desire, gifts in her memory may be made to the Wallingford Police Benevolent Association, 135 N. Main St., Wallingford, CT 06492.

Evelyn M. Polvani

MERIDEN -- Evelyn M. Polvani, 76, of 112 Glen Hills Road, wife of the late Carlo "Charles" G. Polvani, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, in the MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Hyde Park, Vt., April 8, 1924, a daughter of the late Perley W. and Mabel W. Manning Cleveland Sr., she was a resident of Meriden for many years. She retired 15 years ago from the Canberra Industries after 20 years of employment. She had been active in league bowling, she also enjoyed bingo at the K of C and local churches. She will be fondly remembered for her card playing at family gatherings.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin G. and Anne Polvani of Meriden and Mark C. and Patricia Polvani of Wallingford; five grandchildren, Kristi-Anne, Michael, Christopher, Amy and Eric Polvani; four sisters, Rebecca Binkowski of Meriden, Dorothy Ercolani and Margaret Ercolani, both of Florida also Brenda Cannatelli of Southington; four brothers, Keith Cleveland of Florida, Perley Cleveland Jr. of Meriden, James Cleveland of Vermont and Douglas Cleveland of Plantsville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers; and a sister.

Her funeral will be held Monday, April 9, with a gathering at 9:45 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Meriden, with procession to St. Joseph Church, for her 10:30 a.m. funeral liturgy. She will be interred in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours in the funeral home Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Herbert E. Steele Jr.

EAST HADDAM -- Herbert E. Steele Jr., 59, of 172 Smith Road, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in the Hartford Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Meriden, June 14, 1941, a son of Dorothy Steele of South Meriden and the late Herbert E. Steele Sr. He had lived most of his life in Meriden having moved to East Haddam five years ago. He was employed by the Lyman Gun Sight Co. in Middletown for the past seven years. He also worked part time for the Ames Department Store in Middletown for the past two years and for the Caldor Department Store for five years prior. He had been a member of the Meriden Eagles Club. He enjoyed the outdoors including gardening and camping but especially working in his back yard on his tractor.

He is survived by a son, David Steele of Middletown; a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Gregory Buonanni of South Meriden; four grandchildren, David and Jacqueline Steele and Eric and Kevin Buonanni; a brother, Chief Master Sargent Paul Steele, stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Guam also his wife, Evonne Steele; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Patricia Gariepy of Rocky Hill, MaryEllen and Lucien Dube of South Meriden and Donna and Raymond Ricker of Torrington; also survived by his fiancé, Joanne Merrill of East Haddam; and several nieces and nephews.

All are invited to his funeral service Monday, April 9, at 11:30 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Meriden, he will be buried in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. There will be visitation in the funeral home Sunday, April 8, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Virginia H. Gibson

MERIDEN -- Virginia H. Gibson, 81, of 292 Thorpe Ave., wife of the late William C. Gibson, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at home after a long illness.

Born in Cliffside Park, N.J., on Jan. 30, 1920, the daughter of the late Joseph and Grace Cacciola Safino, she had resided in Meriden for the past 41 years. Mrs. Gibson was a graduate of Cliffside Park High School. She was employed by the Meriden Board of Education and worked as a secretary in the Middle schools, retiring in 1985. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister. Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Mothers' Circle and a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marian and Bob Mathieu of South Hadley, Mass.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Mary Ellen Gibson of Berkeley Heights, N.J., Bob and Marie Gibson of Meriden and Rich and Jane Gibson of Franklin, Maine; nine grandchildren, Matt, Chris and Joanna Gibson, Dan and David Gibson, Bobby and Stephanie Mathieu, and Kyle and Kara Gibson; six sisters and a brother-in-law, Genevieve Cerra, Rose Madsen, Fran Badrow, Mary Ditta and her twin sister, Margaret Lazorko, Gerry Kerekes and Bill Lazorko; also by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Safino.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, CT 06451.

Rose A. Mitoraj

MERIDEN -- Rose A. (Mierzejewski) Mitoraj, 84, of 238 Elm St., wife of the late Edward J. Mitoraj, died on Monday, April 2, 2001, at Miller Memorial Community in Meriden.

Born in Windber, Pa., on Dec. 1, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Ann (Krygier) Mierzejewski and had lived in Meriden most of her life. She was a long time parishioner of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Meriden and in her younger years worked on several church and school committees.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Suzanne O. Mitoraj of Meriden; two sisters, Stella Bakaj of Meriden and Veronica Beauchamp of North Haven; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wallace and Marion Mierzejewski of Berlin and Chester and Lois Mierzejewski of Cheshire; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Mierzejewski; and a brother, Walter Mierzejewski.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rose's name may be made to St. Stanislaus School, 81 Akron St., Meriden, CT 06450, or to The Shelter, 43 St. Casimir Drive, Meriden, CT 06450.

James P. Sivigny

MESA, Ariz. -- James Paul Sivigny, 72, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Wallingford, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2001.

James retired at the rank of Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force working as a load master and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After a successful military career of more than 20 years, he began working for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 14 years. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Apache Wells Bandits golf group.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Ranalli; his son, James A. Sivigny; three grandchildren, Lee, Brian and Melissa Ranalli; also three sisters, Mary Carnot of Pawcatuck, Clara Isacco of Jacksonville, Fla., and Katherine Ames of North Haven; and two brothers, Philip Sivigny of Wallingford and Richard Sivigny of Somersworth, N.H.

Mass will be celebrated Thursday, April 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Christ The King Catholic Church, 1551 East Dana Ave., Mesa, Ariz. Mass will be preceded by the recitation of the Rosary at 1 p.m. The cremains will be interred with full military honors, Friday, April 6, at 9 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Ariz. Contributions may be made in his name to either the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 10201 S. 51st St., No. 120 Phoenix, AZ 85044, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 5377, Phoenix, AZ 85010. Hansen's Chapel of Prayer handled the arrangements.

Ann H. Stevens

SOUTHINGTON -- Ann H. Stevens, 67, of the Jensens Community in Garden City, S.C., died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 16, 1933, in Detroit, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Florence Murphy Fisher.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Stevens; two daughters, Karen Stevens of Bristol and Pamela Castonguay of Cheshire; a son-in-law, Alan Conklin of Plainville; two brothers, Lars Fisher and his wife, Jean of Kent, Wash., and Norman Fisher and his wife, Karla of Champaign, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Janet; and a son, Robert.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 7, at 2 p.m. at Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Calling hours are Saturday from 12 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, South Central Connecitcut Chapter, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06518.

Audrey J. Sylvia

BEVERLY HILLS, Fla. -- Audrey J. Sylvia, 70, of Beverly Hills, Fla., passed away Monday, March 12, 2001, in Crystal River, Fla. She was the wife of 35 years to Arthur Sylvia.

Audrey was a native of Spangler, Pa., she was a gun assembler for Colt Firearms. She was a resident of Beverly Hills for 13 years.

Besides her husband, Arthur, she is survived by a son, William Bordeleau of Beverly Hills, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Cosgrove of Old Saybrook; three granddaughters; a grandson; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The Fero Funeral Home of Beverly Hills, Fla., had charge of arrangements.

Benny M. Amarone

EAST HAVEN -- Benny Michael Amarone, 36, of 46 Henry St., entered into eternal rest on April 1, 2001.

He was owner of In Full Bloom for several years, and had been employed at Choate Rosemary Hall until his death.

He is survived by his loving parents, Nicholas Sr. and Joann Mongillo Amarone of Hamden; brothers Andrew Amarone of Hamden, Nicholas Amarone Jr. and his wife Lori of South Meriden, John Amarone and his wife Heidi of Southington and Frank Amarone Sr. and his wife Lisa; his sister, Josephine Amarone; several loving nieces and nephews; a godson, Frank Jr.; and by his longtime companion, Louis Peccerillo.

Family and friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Maresca Funeral Home, 592 Chapel St., New Haven. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, April 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, Wooster Place, New Haven. Interment at St. Lawrence Cemetery in West Haven. Memorial contributions can be made to AIDS Project, New Haven.
