Barbara L. Clark

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Barbara L. Clark, 95, formerly of Ashlar Village, Wallingford and the Arbors Nursing Home, died Jan. 24, 2001, at Hospice House, Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., Nov. 18, 1905, the daughter of Herbert A. and Annie MacGregor Cummings. She graduated from Manchester, N.H., High School in 1924 and Keene Normal School in Keene, N.H., in 1926. She taught school in Brookline, Mass. and was a substitute teacher after her marriage. She married Leslie M. Clark of Manchester, N.H., on Aug. 18, 1928, and was preceded in death by her husband in 1969. She was a member of the Wallingford Congregational Church and Aisha Temple No. 83, Daughters of the Nile, East Hartford.

She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Garfoot of Omaha, Neb. and Venice, Fla., Cynthia Rose-Frazee of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Skaneateles, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Steven and Andrew Gray, Suzanne (Rose) Hall, Eric and David Rose; and eight great-grandchildren.

Burial will be private in Wallingford, sometime in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.

Barbara B. Gessert

CHESHIRE -- Mrs. Barbara B. (Butler) Gessert, 89, of 658 Yalesville Road, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at the Skyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Burton Gessert.

Mrs. Gessert was born Nov. 1, 1911, in Burlington, Vt., a daughter of the late Ralph and Hanna (Harrington) Butler, and had been a Cheshire resident for more than 70 years. She was a graduate of Wilby High School in Waterbury and had received her degree in nursing from the Children's Hospital in Boston. She was a registered nurse at the former Meriden-Wallingford Hospital, now MidState Medical Center in Meriden, retiring after many years of service. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Cheshire and was also a member of the church's Tuesday Circle Group. She was a member and former board member of the Cheshire Senior Center. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lady Fenwick Chapter. She was a member of the Federation of New England Women, a former public health nurse, a volunteer for elderly health screening in Cheshire since its founding, a member of the committee on aging, a member of the public health advisory commission, assisted with the formation of the Cheshire Hospice, and a member of the AARP.

She leaves two sons, David Gessert and his wife Jeanne of Wallingford and Richard Gessert and his wife Pat of Ellington; a sister, Betty Norve of Tom's River, N.J.; four grandchildren, Darlene Gessert, Kimberly Steinbruck and her husband Richard, Elizabeth Gentilini and her husband Paul and Michelle Mullen and her husband John. She was predeceased by a brother, John Butler; and a sister, Nancy Begley.

The funeral will be Friday, March 9, at 1 p.m. at the Cheshire Congregational Church. Private burial in Cheshire Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours are in the church parlor from noon until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Health Care Inc., 1781 Highland Ave., Cheshire, CT 06410. The Alderson Funeral Home, 615 S. Main St., Cheshire,is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Grigerek

SOUTHINGTON -- Helen (Kleszcz) Grigerek, 92, of 989 Shuttle Meadow Road, died Monday March 4, 2001, at Tandem Health Care, where she received excellent care, thanks to the nurses and staff. She was the widow of John Grigerek.

Born Aug. 25, 1908, in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late George and Eva (Turek) Kleszcz. She had worked at Fafnir in New Britain many years ago, and had also been employed at the Southington News. Mrs. Grigerek was a parishioner of St. Dominic Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan Koczon of Southington; two sons, Donald and his wife, Kathy Grigerek of Farmington, Bobby and his wife Mary, Kowalczyk of Southington; a brother, Alfred Kleszcz of Southington; a sister, Irene Smolinski of Plantsville; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, William Kowalczyk.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Road. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday at the Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Martin Heany

MERIDEN -- Martin Heany, 89, of Evansville Avenue, South Meriden, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. He was the husband of the late Grace Bartholomew Heany.

Born in County Clare, Ireland, Nov. 10, 1911, a son of the late Michael and Bridget Heany, he was a Meriden resident for many years. He had been employed by the Insilco Co. for many years, until his retirement 19 years ago. He was a parishioner of Holy Angels Church.

Mr. Heany is survived by his two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph M. and Michele Heany and Michael F. Heany, all with whom he resided in South Meriden; his two grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Jessica Lynn Heany and Joshua Martin Heany; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Thursday, March 8, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Holy Angels Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meriden. Because of his love for his grandchildren, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in his memory be sent to a fund set up for Jessica and Joshua Heany, c/o Southington Savings Bank, 921 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, Plantsville, CT 06479.

Cora L. Kerry

MERIDEN -- Cora L. Kerry, 61, of 144 Lincoln St., wife of Sidney Kerry, died on Monday, March 5, 2001, at MidState Medical Center.

Born in Middletown, May 16, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Julia (Nichols) Ray, and had resided in Meriden most of her lifetime.

Besides her husband, Sidney, she is survived by four daughters, Millicent Feiffer of Meriden, Patricia Santiago of Meriden, Corinne Padilla of Meriden and Michele Ballard of Meriden; a son, Sidney Kerry Jr. of Meriden; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Elsie Beech of Cromwell and Augusta Turner of Maine; a brother, Walter Ray of Pennsylvania ; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Stephanie Kerry.

The funeral will be held on Friday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden with the Rev. Paul Rotondi, O.F.M., of St. Rose of Lima Church officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Peter W. Penal

MERIDEN -- Peter W. Pernal, 89, formerly of Applewood Drive, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, peacefully surrounded by his family, in the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center. He was the husband of the late Stacia Irene Norkiewicz.

Born in New Haven on June 29, 1911, he was the son of the late Karol and Frances Pernal. He was a Meriden resident for most of his life. During the war, Mr. Pernal supported the war effort by working in New Departure. Mr. Pernal had been employed by Fulton Market, where he began his career as a meat cutter. In 1939, he opened his own grocery store on the corner of Pratt and Stone streets in Meriden, which he named Thrifty Market. His store remained opened until the redevelopment being done in Meriden in the early 1960's forced him to close his store. He then worked as a meat department manager for Barker Supermarkets until they shut down. Afterward, he worked for Thurston Foods in Wallingford until his retirement in 1992 at the age of 81. Mr. Pernal was a member of the Meriden High School Fathers Club and enjoyed singing in the shows. He was a member of the Door of Hope Community Church in Meriden.

Mr. Pernal is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia and Gavin Donnelly of Ridgefield and Janet and Michael Wrona of Meriden; four grandchildren, Suzanne Kromidas of Bristol, Mark Liseo of Oakville and Joy Wrona and Michael Wrona, both of Meriden; two great-grandchildren, Daniel and David Kromidas; a sister, Sophie Marecki of Ansonia; also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Barnash; and a brother, Stanley Pernal.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, with Pastor Randy Somody officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Helen Boynton

MERIDEN -- Mrs. Helen Teller Wiese Boynton, 94, formerly of Cheshire, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at her home at Miller Memorial Community in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Kenneth B. Boynton.

Mrs. Boynton, a daughter of the late Harriet (Teller) Wiese and N. Edward Wiese, was born on Aug. 27, 1906, in Cheshire. She was a graduate of Crosby High School in Waterbury and Perry's Secretarial School. She was the former chairman of the Resident's Council at Miller Memorial Community and was active in the Cheshire Senior Center and AARP. She was a lifelong member of the Cheshire United Methodist Church and a school volunteer. Mrs. Boynton was employed by Harkness Industries as an office manager until her retirement at age 75.

Mrs. Boynton leaves three sons, Kenneth Boynton of Cheshire, Charles Boynton of East Haddam and Lynwood (Liner) Boynton of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Kenneth Boynton of Tucson, Ariz., Christopher Boynton of Fairfield, Susan Marimon of Glastonbury, Jared Boynton of East Haddam, Jeffrey Boynton of Cromwell and Amy Zaferacopoulis of Woburn, Mass.; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Catharine Eliason of Northford and Harriet Schmidt of Cheshire; many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Polly Casey. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Wiese; and a sister, Frances Erickson.

A celebration of life will be held at Miller Memorial Community at 360 Broad St., Meriden, on Saturday, March 10, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Cheshire United Methodist Church or the Residents' Betterment Fund at the Miller Memorial Community. The Slater Funeral Home, 242 S. Main St., Cheshire, is in charge of arrangements.

E. Susan Frazier

NEW BRITAIN -- E. Susan (Figgins) Frazier, 53, former Emergency Needs Ministry Coordinator, Friendship Service Center, New Britain, died at rest on March 1, 2001, at New Britain General Hospital.

In her living and in her dying she was a beacon of courage and hope to all who knew and loved her, and whom she embraced in love to the end. Susan saw the human face of God in all the people she served through her commitments to Covenant-to-Care, the Walk Against Hunger, and her recent service as Treasurer of the AIDS Project of Greater New Britain.

She is survived by her first true love, the Rev. Kenneth A. Frazier Jr., Interim Minister, The First Congregational Church, Meriden; her trusted daughter, Jennifer Chadukiewicz and her husband, Michael, her nurney baby daughter, Leah Poisson and her husband, Mark, and by her beloved baby daughter, Sara Frazier; she leaves to their loving care her grandchildren, Michael, Joey, Mariah and James Chadukiewicz and Aubrey Poisson; Susan loved her remaining family, her beloved mother, Helen Figgins; her younger, prettier sister, Pat Williams ("no passes back") and her husband, Roger; her baby brother, Charles N. "Chuck" Figgins Jr. and his wife, Roxanna; Susan has joined her father, Charles N. Figgins Sr. and they now fish together on Wash Pan; she leaves to our care numerous and much loved nieces, nephews and cousins. She was nurtured and sustained in her search for life by the nursing staff of W2, whom she loved and trusted and in her darkest hours she was lifted to hope by the awe-inspiring human respect accorded her by her beloved physician, Dr. Akella Sarma. In her pilgrimage of hope, she found homes of love and support in New Britain with Ken and Sara; in Waterbury, with Marianne and Rory; and in Wethersfield, where Mark and Winnie loved her as their own; in all things she received life and joy from her circle of friends, some of whom include, Marianne, Debbie, Alicia, Lorraine, Susan, Kathy, Jan, Marybeth and from Alayne, who knows.

Calling hours will be held Monday, March 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. A service of memorial and thanksgiving will be held at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 830 Corbin Ave., New Britain, on Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. Burial will be in her family Cemetery in Tiptonville, Tenn. At Susan's request, donations in her memory may be made to the Emergency Needs Ministry of the Friendship Service Center, 100 Arch St., New Britain, CT 06051.

Henry W. Herrmann

ROCKY HILL -- Henry W. Herrmann, 90, loving husband of Alice passed away on Feb. 27, 2001, in Rocky Hill. He was the beloved son of the late Oscar and Rena Herrmann.

He was an enthusiastic member and president of the Babylon, Long Island Board of Education and a lifetime member of the New York Masonic Lodge No. 232.

He was the devoted father of Phyllis and Evie; adored grandfather of Scott and Amy. He was the affectionate brother of the late Dorothy Adams.

Funeral services and burial will be private in Babylon, Long Island. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
