Robert A. Panciera

MERIDEN -- Robert "Bob" A. Panciera, 53, of 111 New Hanover Ave., died unexpectedly Monday, April 1, 2002 in Hartford Hospital.

He was born in Meriden, Aug. 12, 1948, a son of Elizabeth Baumberger Panciera of Meriden and the late Enver Panciera. He was a 1966 graduate of Wilcox Technical High School. He had been self-employed as a truck driver for many years. He enjoyed sports especially drag racing. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast and he very much loved music. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

Besides his mother he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott B. and Christina Panciera of Middletown; three grandchildren, Ryan, Jordan and Olivia Panciera; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Ann Panciera of Guilford, Maine, also Thomas and Jean Panciera of Killingworth; one aunt; two uncles, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

All are invited to his memorial service Saturday, April 6, in the Hubbard Memorial Chapel of Walnut Grove Cemetery, beginning at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden.

Lorraine Smart

SOUTHINGTON -- Lorraine (LeDuc) Smart, 87, of 55 Briar Lane died, Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles Smart.

Born March 23, 1915 in Marlboro, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Philias and Berthe (Vaillancourt) LeDuc.

She is survived by her son, Charles Smart of Elmwood; a daughter, Linda Doolittle and her husband, Robert and their son, Christopher of Plainville; a sister, Yvonne Hinckley of Merrimack, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters; and one brother.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. Internment will be in Woodman Cemetery in East Wakefield, N.H. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one's choice.

Carmela R. Sperlazza

SPRING HILL, Fla. -- Carmela Rose Sperlazza, 82, of Spring Hill, Fla., passed away, Monday, April 1, 2002 at Spring Hill Regional Hospital.

She moved to Florida 16 years ago from Meriden. She was a parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Spring Hill, Fla. She retired from International Silver Company in Meriden in 1980. She enjoyed gardening, yard work, decorating her home, watching "All My Children," and later in life, she enjoyed watching Tiger Woods play golf, was an avid Tampa Buccaneers fan. Her greatest joy was being with family and friends, and she opened her home to everyone.

She was the wife of the late Jerry Sperlazza; and is survived by sons, Sal Sperlazza of Clearwater, Fla., Frank Sperlazza of Spring Hill, Fla.; godson and nephew, Michael Carbone of Southington; and brother, Victor Marcantonio of Las Vegas, Nev. She was predeceased by a brother, E.J.Marcantonio; and sister, Laura Carbone; and is survived by her grandchildren, Mary, Matthew, Shelley, Susan, Christine; her best friend and great-grandchild, Jasmine; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 5030 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill, Fla.

Warren H. Becker

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. -- Warren Henry Becker, 70, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., died Monday, April 1, 2002 at his home.

Mr. Becker was a Wallingford resident for more than 40 years, where he was employed with The Pond Lily Co., had then opened an accounting and tax business: Becker Assoc. Inc., before retiring to South Carolina in 1994.

Surviving are his wife, Martha L. Becker; daughter, Diana Becker Query and husband, Richard of Sandy Hook; a son, George E. Becker and wife, Denise of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; granddaughter, Veronica A. Dale and husband, Scott; a grandson, Shawn E. Becker; great-granddaughter, Madison A. Dale.

Memorial gifts may be sent to the First Baptist Church, 146 Church St., Wallingford, CT 06492.

Scott C. Carey

WALLINGFORD -- Scott C. Carey, 38, of Gianotti Court, Wallingford, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 3, 2002. He was the beloved husband of Holly B. Johnson Carey.

Born in Meriden, March 27, 1964, a loving son of Jayne Gianotti Carey of Wallingford and the late John J. Carey, he was a lifelong Wallingford resident. Mr. Carey was employed by the State of Connecticut, Department of Addiction Services in Middletown, as a Mental Health Worker, for the past 18 years. He was the Past-President and current 2nd Vice President of Trout Unlimited, Hammonassett Chapter No. 446 and had received the Silver Trout Award for Distinguished Service to Conservation. He also was a member of the Conn/RI Coastal Fly Fisherman Association and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Carey is survived by his two month old daughter, Alyssa Brook Carey; his two year old son, Hunter John Carey; his brother and sister-in-law, Mark R. and Jodi E. Carey of Wolcott and their children, Carissa Lea Carey, Ryan Mark Carey and Layne Julia Carey; his mother-in-law, Barbara R. Johnson of Cheshire; his sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, Karen E. Wild and Herbert T. Wild and their children, Herbie T. and Travis J. Wild of Cheshire and Gary J. and Geralyn Johnson and their son, Tyler of Wolcott. Besides his father, John, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, John Johnson.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the Carey Children's Education Fund, c/o Fleet Bank, 100 Center St., Wallingford, CT 06492.

Leon J. Halepas

MERIDEN -- Leon J. Halepas of 412 West Main St., Meriden, died peacefully at home on April 4, 2002. He was the husband of the late Ilaritsa Xanthakos.

He was born on April 24, 1925 in Meriden, a son of the late Peter and Stella (Barkas) Halepas. He was self-employed in the Floral Industry for many years. Mr. Halepas served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II.

A son, Peter and wife, Juanita Halepas of Meriden survive Mr. Halepas; two daughters, Stephanie and Mara Halepas, both of Meriden; two sisters, Georgia Alexander of Chevy Chase, Md.; and Jenny Markis of Florida; two grandchildren, Haritsa and Sofia; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will take place at West Haven Funeral Home, 662 Savin Ave., West Haven from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday . Funeral services will be held at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in New Britain, Saturday, April 6, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Meriden. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden.

Dorothea Ives

MILFORD -- Mrs. Dorothea "Dotti" Whalen Ives, 83, of West Main St., Milford, beloved wife of Charles H. Ives, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford.

Daughter of the late Clifford F. and Helen Malone Whalen, she was born Oct. 10, 1918, in New Haven, and was a resident of Milford for more than 50 years. Mrs. Ives worked for the Southern New England Telephone Company. She was an active volunteer for the Milford Chapter-American Red Cross and the Milford Audubon Society. An avid camper and traveler, Mrs. Ives was a good friend of the "Old Woodmont Kids" and a member of the Milford Garden Club and the West Haven Square Dance Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children, Charles M. Ives and his wife, Susan of Woodford, Va., Susan P. Ives of Milford, Thomas C. Ives and his wife, Audrey of Tyngsboro, Mass., Kathleen Hunter and her husband, Gilbert of Wallingford and Richard P. Ives of East Haven; nine grandchildren, Ken Ives, Aaron Ives, Deirdre Brigman, Doug Ives, Jamie Ann Rose, Brian J. Rose, Hilary E. Ives, Kathleen P. Hunter and James G. Hunter; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral from the Cody-white Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., on the Green, Milford, Saturday, April 6, at 9:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Milford. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery, Milford. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.

Marie F. Serrano

MERIDEN -- Marie F. Serrano, 69, of Hanover Tower, Meriden, wife of the late Jesus Serrano, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at home.

She was born Dec. 21, 1932 in Lancaster, Pa., the daughter of the late Edwin and Pauline (DiFresco) Fetter. She was very loving and personable, and had many friends that she met through the city bus system. She also had a special place in her heart for animals.

Mrs. Serrano is survived by two sons, David and his wife, Mary Serrano of Portland, Maine and Manuel Serrano of Mt. Holly, N.J.; and two daughters, Eloise and husband, Andrew Hudd of Wallingford and Donna (Serrano) and her husband, Mike Herman of Allentown, Pa.; a brother, George Fetter; and a sister, Lydia Reed predeceased her; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, also survive her.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m. at Saint Peter and Paul Church, 139 N. Orchard, Wallingford. Burial will take place at a later date in Pennsylvania . In lieu of flowers, please make donations to SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden is handling arrangements.

Dorothy A. Miller

MERIDEN -- Dorothy A. Miller, 84, wife of the late Lawrence Miller, died on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Meriden Center after a brief illness. Born in New Haven on Jan. 19, 1918, daughter of the late Valentine and Eva Brown Buttner, she had resided in Meriden most of her life. Mrs. Miller had attended Wallingford schools and was retired from Meriden-Wallingford Anesthesiology Group. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Sandra and Peter Dudzinski, of Meriden; seven grandchildren: Kristina Freedman, Lawrence R. Miller Jr., Alexandra Miller, and Geoffrey Miller; eight great-grandchildren, much loved by Kathleen Dudzinski, PHD. and her husband, John Anderson, Stephanie and Jeffrey Dubuc, and Rebecca Dudzinski and her husband, Eric Henry; and their children: Benjamin, Samuel, Camille, and Eli. She was predeceased by a son, Lawrence R. Miller.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 9 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please perform an act of kindness for someone living, in Dorothy's name.
