Barbara Schumann

MERIDEN -- Barbara Bunnell Schumann, 86, of 74 Westerly Terrace, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington. She was the wife of Robert F. Schumann.

Born in Meriden, Jan. 27, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Amanda Kantack Bunnell. She had worked as a law office secretary and was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She had been a member of the Emblem Club and the Women's Bridge Club.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Schumann of Meriden; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Virginia Schumann of New Britain; a sister-in-law, Grace Bunnell of Meriden; a dear friend, Dorothy Steele of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Robert Bunnell.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry L. Beaver will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the services. If desired, contributions in Mrs. Schumann's memory may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 164 Hanover St., Meriden, CT 06450.

Julius W. Zembruski

BETHLEHEM -- Mr. Julius W. Zembruski, 79, of 21 Sanford Lane, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at home after a brief illness. He was the husband of Helen (Kobylenski) Zembruski.

Mr. Zembruski was born in Waterbury on Jan. 12, 1923, son of the late Walter and Pelagia (Ploski) Zembruski. He worked as a machinist at Scovill Manufacturing, Century Brass, and Rostra from where he retired after 47 years. He was a World War II, U.S. Army Veteran machine gunner in Infantry Battalion. His battalion received Presidential citation. Julius was awarded a Bronze Star with three Battle Stars. He was a member of the Oakville Veteran of Foreign War Post 7330. He was also a member of the Corp B. Korowlotny Post in Waterbury. He was a communicant of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Besides his wife, he leaves, a son, Robert Zembruski of Terryville; two daughters, Diane Chaconis of Cheshire and Donna Cashman of Bethlehem; a sister, Jean Needham of Wolcott; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Peter Zembruski; two sisters, Jennie Mertz and Miriam Dubinsky are deceased.

A military funeral will be held on Friday, April 12, at 9:15 a.m. from Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Rt. 63, Watertown to Church of the Nativity, 48 East St., Bethlehem for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Calling hours will be held at Hickcox Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nativity, 48 East St., Bethlehem or to Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 411 Bethlehem, CT 06751. The Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck is in charge of arrangements.

Bess Levine

GRANBY -- Bess Berman Levine, 86, of MeadowBrook of Granby, wife of the late Herman Levine, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at MeadowBrook of Granby Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born in New Haven on July 7, 1915, she was the daughter of Hyman and Jenny Berman. Mrs. Levine had resided in Granby. She had graduated from New Haven public schools and was previously employed by Meriden Auction Rooms, retiring in the 1970s. She was a member of Congregation B'nai Abraham, prior president of Sisterhood, Temple B'nai Abraham, and a member of Hadassah.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Levine Weiss and James Weiss of Stratham, N.H.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur W. Levine and Cantor Susan Lang Levine of Simsbury and Gerald D. Levine and Sarah L. Pokempner of Washington , D.C.; six grandchildren, David Levine, Micah Levine, Abigail Pokempner Levine, Zoe Pokempner Levine, Emma Pokempner Levine and Joel Weiss; a niece and several nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Herman, who died in Florida in 1985.

The funeral will be held on Friday, April 12, at 10 a.m. in Temple B'nai Abraham with Rabbi Gloria S. Rubin officiating. Burial will be in B'nai Abraham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either MeadowBrook of Granby Nursing Home, 350 Salmon Brook St., Granby, CT 06035 or Temple B'nai Abraham, 127 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450. The John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, is in charge of arrangements.

Lucian R. Calderoni

SOUTHINGTON -- Lucian R. Calderoni, 58, 130 Edgewood Circle, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia (Mihalak) Calderoni.

Born in Bristol on Oct. 13, 1943, the son of Helen (Masci) Calderoni of Bristol and the late Luciano Calderoni. He had been employed by the Aqua Turf Club in Southington for the past 12 years after retiring from New Departure-Hyatt in Bristol after 28 years of service. He was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dean R. and Elizabeth Calderoni of Marlborough; two grandchildren, Michael and Sarah Calderoni; a brother, Al Calderoni of Bristol; a sister, Frances Sylvester of Bristol; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Calderoni.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Christine S. Dell-Aquila

WALLINGFORD -- Christine S. Dell-Aquila, 83, of 19 Field Drive, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the Regency House of Wallingford. She was the wife of Nicholas Dell-Aquila.

She was born in New Haven, Oct. 3, 1918, a daughter of the late Anthony and Winifred Lombardi Salvati. She was a communicant of the Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, John Ruocco of Wallingford and Richard Ruocco of Milford; a brother, Anthony Salvati of East Haven; two sisters, Patricia Montefusco of West Haven and Winifred Mead of Fla.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary DeMatteo.

The funeral will leave the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford on Saturday, April 13, at 9:45 a.m. to the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Frank Fonteyn Sr.

NORTH HAVEN -- Frank Fonteyn Sr., 80, of 17 Trumbull Place, North Haven, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the Alzheimer's Resource Center, Southington. He was the husband of the late Lorraine Russell Fonteyn.

Born in Manchester, N.H., on Oct. 26, 1922, son of the late Joseph and Leoni Fonteyn. Mr. Fonteyn was a U.S. Army veteran in World War II, with the 100th Infantry Division when they landed at Omaha Beach. He joined the New Haven Police Dept., as a patrolman in 1946 and made his way up to the ranks to Detective assigned to the Special Services Division and later to the Arson Investigation Squad. He retired in 1976 after 29 years of service. He was a member of the Police Legionnaires, the American Legion and a parishioner of St. Barnabas Church for over 50 years.

Father of Frank E. Fonteyn Jr. of Wallingford, Linda M. Thomas and Deborah A. Miller, both of North Haven; brother of the late Robert Fonteyn and Phyllis Lamey; grandfather of Frank and Heather Fonteyn, Margaret (Meg) and Richard Thomas and Kristyn and Joshua Miller.

His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, Saturday at 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Barnabas Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. The visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Should friends desire memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Resource Center, 1261 So. Main St., Plainville, CT 06479.

Mae J. Hartig

PALM HARBOR, Fla. --Mae J. Hartig, 88, formerly of Meriden, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 in Palm Harbor. Fla.

Born in Wallingford, she moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1968, and later to Palm Harbor, Fla. In Wallingford, she was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by a son, Donald R. Hartig of Palm Harbor; a brother, Ted Kowalski of Wallingford; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Brett Funeral Home and Cremation Services, St. Petersburg, Fla., has charge of arrangements.

Dudley C. Johnson Jr.

AKRON, Ohio -- Dudley C. Johnson Jr. of Akron, Ohio, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Akron City Hospital.

Born in Meriden on July 2, 1929, he was the son of the late Dudley C. Sr. and Mildred Jaquith Johnson. He attended local schools and graduated from Meriden High School in 1947. He graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in commerce and economics and University of Southern Connecticut with a master's degree in counseling. He served as Academic Advisor and Director of Counseling and Academic Advisor to Fraternities and Senior Classes at the University of Akron, retiring as an Associate Dean and Director of Counseling and Advising Emeritus. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 83 in Akron and was active in the American Red Cross and other community and church services.

Besides his wife, Doris, he is survived by two sons, Bruce and Peter; and two daughters, Helen and Sarah, all of Ohio; five grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Dutton of Wallingford and Ruth Roden of Meriden; one uncle, Earl Johnson of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Monday, April 1, 2002 at the First Congregational Church of Akron with the Rev. Dr. Jay Marshall Groat and Rev. William Rodefer officiating.

Laura M. Lutz

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Laura M. Lutz, 83, formerly of Meriden, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002 in Clearwater, Fla.

Born in Meriden, Laura moved to Largo, Fla., in 1988 after retiring from the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, where she worked for many years. A member of the Indian Rocks Baptist Church, Laura served as a volunteer at many of the local hospitals.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Chandler of Wallingford; a daughter, Joan Preisner of Durham; two sisters, Doris Balder of Belleair, Fla., and Minnie Lutz of Cheshire; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Moss Feaster Funeral Home of Largo, Fla., has charge of arrangements.
