Mary Bauchmann
MERIDEN -- Mary Cantino Bauchmann, a longtime resident of Meriden, died suddenly at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Saturday, April 20, 2002. She was the wife of the late Harold J. Bauchmann and suffered a heart attack at the age of 87.
Born in Manchester on Feb. 10, 1915, she was the eldest of five daughters of Angela and Peter Cantino. The family moved to Meriden and she attended Meriden High School. During the Depression, she was at times the sole supporter of the family, and was well known for her responsible work ethic. In 1940 she married Harold Bauchmann, a young police officer at the time, whom she met at neighborhood gatherings, and they spent 58 years together as husband and wife. In their later years, they lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., while maintaining their home in Meriden, until moving permanently to Florida in 1998. Mr. Bauchmann was a leader of the Girl Scouts in Meriden and participated in the PTA and numerous school events for both her children. She spent many years, after her husband retired from the Meriden Police Department, as a highly recognized salesperson at G. Fox and then Filenes. She received many commendations based on customers' praise and was frequently honored at store functions. She attended St. Rose Church while she lived in Meriden; in Ft. Lauderdale she was a member of Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church. In recent years she traveled extensively, often with her daughters. Attending an audience with the Pope in Rome was one of her best memories. Less formal events, sometimes resulting in humorous and surprising adventures, delighted her as well.
She is survived by her two daughters, Loraine Bauchmann of Harrison, N.Y., and Nancy Brink of Falmouth, Mass.; and by two sisters, Eunice Garetto of Roseville, Calif., and Norma Ceraolo of Cliffside Park, N.J.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Church St., Meriden. Following the Mass, she will be buried next to her late husband in Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in Mary Bauchmann's name to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
Randolph F. Gavette
WALLINGFORD -- Randolph F. Gavette, 84, formerly of Simpson Ave., Wallingford, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 in the Arden House in Hamden. He was the loving husband of Helen Naiss Gavette.
Born in Frankfort, South Dakota, Nov. 30, 1917, a son of the late Frederick Reed Gavette and Viola Brooks Gavette, Randy lived most of his life in Wallingford, where he was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection since its inception. He also was a member of the Men's League and had served as a collector for many years. He also was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Pinta Council No. 5 of Wallingford. Randy, a Master Die Cutter and Ornamental Designer by trade, took great pride in being able to accomplish almost anything he set his mind to, whether it be carpentry, electrical or plumbing, renovating the family home or building a garage or life sized dollhouse for his daughter, making wonderful wooden toys for his children, building a windmill and lighthouse for his lawn, making sterling silver jewelry, oil painting, building miniature wagons or miniature dollhouses for his granddaughters. Since his retirement in 1980, Randy spent countless hours enjoying his hobbies of golf and oil painting. His paintings adorned the walls of family and friends throughout the United States. Despite his decline due to Alzheimer's, Randy never complained and always had a smile for everyone.
Besides his loving wife, Helen, Randy is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Gretchen Gavette of Harwinton; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Donald Lee Jr. of Wallingford; his seven grandchildren, Christopher Gavette, Michelle Waterfield, Kathleen Miller, Patty Lee, Jeffrey Wilcox, Ellen Matos and Heather Wilcox; his five great-grandchildren, Jack and Kyle Waterfield, Owen and Graham Wilcox and Isabella Matos; his two sisters, Dorothy Meloney of Yalesville and Berta McKenzie of New York; his brother, Robert M. Gavette of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his three sisters, Marion Naiss, Ruth Post and Eleanor Cella.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to the Church of the Resurrection, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery
in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated to either The Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford, CT 06492 or the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill 60611-1676 or to the charity of your choice.
Thomas Herlihy
SOUTHINGTON -- Thomas Herlihy, 79, of 542 South Farms Terrace, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Southington Care Center. He was the husband of the late Josephine (Alessandrelli) Herlihy.
He was born on May 6, 1923 in Manhattan, N.Y., the son of the late Thomas and Anne (Stanek) Herlihy. He was U.S Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Herlihy was a parishioner of St. Dominic Church. Prior to his retirement he was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City.
He is survived by his loving children, Jacquelyn and her husband, Joseph Szymczak of Southington, Joanne and her husband, Frank Zagarino of Wallingford and Thomas and his wife, Eileen of Bridgeport; a brother, William and his wife, Shirley Herlihy of Pittsburgh, Pa.; six cherished grandchildren, Michelle Szymczak, Michael Szymczak, Jennifer Zagarino, Jacquelyn Zagarino, Eileen Fiona and Patrick Thomas Herlihy; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 10:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to St. Dominic Church for a Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Bradley Memorial Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, 81 Meriden Ave., Southington, CT 06489.
Alice A. Maglione
WALLINGFORD -- Alice A. Maglione, 51, wife of Louis R. Maglione of 977 N. Farms Road, died Monday, May 6, 2002 in the MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in East Hartford, June 20, 1950, a daughter of the late Millard and Sophie Nawroski Varrell, she was a resident of Wallingford for the past 16 years. She was employed as a paralegal, with Attorney Christopher F. Longley. Prior to which she had been employed in the legal department of the City of Wallingford. She was also employed at UNIMAX for 23 years. She had been a faithful blood donor.
Besides her husband, she is survived by their daughter, Amanda Maglione of Wallingford; two sisters, Nancy Kunsa and Debra Slosek, both of Meriden; one brother, Stephen Varrell of Yalesville; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Varrell; and a sister, Sally Bellise.
Her memorial service will be held Friday, May 10, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Mausoleum of Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. There will be a prayer service conducted at 11 a.m. She will be entombed in the Mausoleum. Her family respectfully requests that contributions be made to the Red Cross Blood Program, c/o The American Red Cross, Wallingford-Meriden Branch, 144 S. Main St., Wallingford, CT 06492 or to the American Heat Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492. Marjorie Williams
SOUTH DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Mrs. Marjorie (Shatney) Williams, 61, of Magnolia Ave., died Sunday, May 5, 2002, in Daytona Beach, Fla. She was the wife of William Williams.
Mrs. Williams was born in Waterbury on Feb. 7, 1941, daughter of the late Marcel and Marion (Shattuck) Marti. She was raised in Watertown and had lived in Cheshire and Meriden for many years before moving to Florida. She retired from the Cheshire Senior Center and was a member of the American Legion in Meriden.
Besides her husband, she leaves four daughters, Tracey Cleveland of Meriden, Lori Wortz of Trumbull, Marci McCann of Oakville and Cathi Sullivan of Wallingford; her brother, Robert Marti of Waterbury; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Watertown. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery
is private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday at 6 p.m. until the time of the service.
Ellen D. Bullock
MERIDEN -- Ellen D. Bullock, 78, of 380 Crown St., died Monday, May 6, 2002 at the Curtis Home.
Born in Meriden, Oct. 29, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Mary Laidlaw Bullock. She was a graduate of Meriden High School, class of 1942, and was employed as an assembler at New Departure for 20 years. She was a member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 12 p.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. the Rev. Jane White-Hassler will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Mary C. Custy
MERIDEN -- Mary C. Custy, 78, wife of Carroll Custy, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, after a long illness. Married 58 years she enjoyed a rich and full life with her husband, Carroll.
Born in New York, N.Y., on May 2, 1924, the daughter of the late John and Mary Patwell Conlon. She had resided in Meriden 58 years and had graduated from New York schools. Mrs. Custy was employed by the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Retardation, retiring 18 years ago. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. She devoted her life to caring for others and spent years working with disabled children.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen and Tim Grime of Northford; Mary Ann and Vincent Amarante and Patricia and John Yale, all of Middlefield; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Julie Custy of Meriden; 10 grandchildren; John Custy, Tim Custy, Michael, Nicholas and Alex Amarante, Carolyn and Melissa Grime and Mary, Megan and Molly Yale; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, John Conlon.
The funeral will be held on Friday, May 10, at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 11:15 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center St., Meriden, CT 06450.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, children and grandchildren.
Claire D'Agostino
HAMDEN -- Claire (Grimord) D'Agostino, 85, formerly of 49 Davis St., Meriden, wife of the late Samuel L. D'Agostino, died Tuesday evening, May 7, 2002 at Whitney Manor in Hamden after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden on May 10, 1916, the daughter of the late Arthur and Ellen Grimord, she had resided in Meriden for her entire life and attended local schools.
She is survived by one daughter, Lynda D'Agostino of Meriden; two sons and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Caroline D'Agostino of North Haven and Robert D'Agostino of Florida; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Stella Blair of Florida and Eva Whitworth of Meriden; and by a brother, Delor Grimord of Florida.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 11, at 8:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Martin J. Dorsey
WALLINGFORD -- Martin Joseph Dorsey, 93, formerly of North Turnpike Road, Wallingford, went home on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 to his heavenly Father, and his beloved wife, Helen Mrozowski Dorsey, who passed away May 9, 1999. We will miss this kind, loving, gentle soul, as we celebrate his life.
Born in Wallingford, Jan. 20, 1909, a son of the late Louis and Caroline Marenna Dorsey, he had been a lifelong Wallingford resident. He had been employed by the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in North Haven for many years, until his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and had served enlistment's in the Connecticut National Guard, and the Seabees. He was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Libro Pensiero Society both in Wallingford.
Mr. Dorsey is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Frances M. and Daniel F. Wagner of Gulfport, Miss., and Beverly A. and Walter S. Lewis of West Rutland, Vt.; his six grandchildren, Michael Wagner, Martin J. Wagner of Biloxi, Miss., Peter Wagner of Tampa, Fla., Janice Agosta of N. Branford, Angela Skibitcky of West Haven and Walter Lewis of Daytona, Fla.; seven great-grandchildren, Janaia Skibitcky, Walter Lewis, Kenneth Lewis, Danielle Wagner, Jared Wagner, Martin C. Wagner and Daniel Skibitcky; two sisters, Rosemarie (Mrs. Basil) Cornaglia and Mildred (Mrs. Joseph) Tenczar, both of Wallingford; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Regal and Mildred Dorsey of Wallingford, John Dorsey of Southington and Romeo and Lucy Dorsey of Wallingford; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Edward R. Dorsey; his first wife, Frances Bartel Dorsey; his two sisters, Florence CoFrancisco and Emma Dorsey; and his three brothers, Nicholas Dorsey, Dominic Dorsey and Anthony Dorsey.
He enjoyed tending his garden, cooking, fishing, playing cards, listening to his "beloved Chickadee" play the piano, playing and laughing with his grandchildren, and always helping others.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford Saturday morning, from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS. Peter and Paul Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors, will be in St. John Cemetery
