Irving E. Goodrich

MERIDEN -- Irving E. Goodrich, 76, of 23 Summer St., Meriden, died Friday, May 3, 2002 at home with his wife, Marie (Calamaro) Goodrich by his side.

Irving was born Sept 16, 1925, a son to the late Frederick and Claira (Gagne) Goodrich. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served his country during World War II. Prior to his retirement he was employed as a crane operator for F.O. Bauman & Son of Meriden. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church and a member of the American Legion Post No. 45 of Meriden.

In addition to his wife, Marie he is survived by three sons, Raymond Caruso of Indiana, Rocco ad Robert Caruso of Meriden; one brother, Arthur Goodrich of Meriden; two sisters, Shirley and Evelyn Kelly of Meriden; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters, Nellie Griswald, Bertha Cotter and Edna Sharrow.

A memorial Mass will take place on Friday, May 10, at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center St., Meriden with Fr. Isaac Calicchio OFM officiating. Burial to follow at the State Veteran Cemetery, Bow Lane, Middletown. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden is handling the arrangements.

Thomas Herlihy

SOUTHINGTON -- Thomas Herlihy, 79, of 542 South Farms Terrace, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Southington Care Center. He was the husband of the late Josephine (Alessandrelli) Herlihy.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 10:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Dominic Church for a Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Bradley Memorial Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, 81 Meriden Ave. Southington, CT 06489.

Chester Personowski

MERIDEN -- Chester Personowski, 92, of Meriden, formerly of Rockville, died on Thursday, May 2, 2002 at a local nursing center.

He was born July 21, 1909 in Rockville, a son to the late Victor and Helen (Petrowsky) Personowski. Prior to his illness he was a parishioner of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of Rockville.

Chester is survived by three sisters, Helen Personowski, Bernice Price and Genevieve Klonoski, all of Farmington. He was predeceased by a sister, Steffnity Juralewicz.

The service and burial will be private. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden is handling the arrangements.

AnnJane Schurgast

MERIDEN -- AnnJane (Hirst) Schurgast, 59, of Meriden, husband of Dr. Anselm W. Schurgast, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 after a brief illness.

Born in Meriden on Dec. 4, 1942, she was the daughter of the late James and Genevieve (Finn) Hirst. Mrs. Schurgast had resided in Meriden for the past 26 years after moving here form Madison.

Besides her husband, Anselm, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. David "Jo" Cole of Clinton; one brother, James J. Hirst of Old Saybrook; also by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Red Cross, 209 Farmington Ave., Farmington, CT 06032, the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Pkwy., Meriden, CT 06450 or St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, 114 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06105. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.

Raymond R. Zeek Sr.

HAMDEN -- Raymond R. Zeek Sr., 74 of 75 Washington Ave., Hamden, formerly of Centerbrook Road, Hamden entered into rest eternal, Wednesday, May 8, 2002. He was the widower of Audrey E. Saviteer Zeek.

Born in New Haven and raised in West Haven, he was the son of the late Raymond H. and Dorothy Tingley Zeek. He was owner and operator of the Skiff & Whitney Exxon Gas Station in Hamden for 20 years, retiring in 1982. Previous to that, he worked for his father at the Spring Glen Esso Gas Station. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a member of the New Haven Elks No. 25, and was a former member of the West Haven Twilight Baseball League and received the Golden Bat Award from the league.

He was the father of Peter L. Zeek of Middletown, Raymond R. Zeek Jr. and Mrs. David (Elaine) O'Connor, both of Wallingford, Mrs. Mark (Claire) Pilon, Mrs. Paul (Karen) O'Connor, both of Hamden and Mrs. Vincent (Leslie) Terrone of New Haven; brother of Mrs. Edwin (Thurza) Zeek-Fletcher of Hamden; and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral in Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, Saturday at 8:15 a.m. Mass at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, followed by burial with full military honors in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Haven C.A.P.D. Memorial Fund, 136 Sherman Ave., New Haven 06511.

Nicasio Ortiz

MERIDEN -- Nicasio Ortiz, 59, of Hanover St., died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Hartford Hospital.

Born Jan. 24, 1943 in Aguada, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Ernesto Ortiz and Buenaventura Muniz.

Mr. Ortiz is survived by a son, Jesus Ortiz of Meriden; four daughters, Sol A. Castro, Milta Gibbs and Clariza Ortiz, all of Meriden and Maria Ortiz of New Jersey; four brothers, Carlos and Samuel Ortiz, both of Meriden, Luis Ortiz of New York and Hector Ortiz of Puerto Rico; four sisters, Aurea Irizarry and Maggie Ortiz, both of Meriden, Erodita Ponce of Florida and Minita Ortiz of Puerto Rico; also survived by nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Arnaldo Ortiz.

Funeral services will take place Friday at 1 p.m. at Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home, Friday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Contributions may be made to the family in Nicasio's memory.

Beth L. Stanwood

CHESHIRE -- Mrs. Beth L. (Dingeman) Stanwood, 81, of 46 Ives Hill Court, died Monday, May 6, 2002 at her home. She was the wife of the late Richard R. Stanwood.

Mrs. Stanwood was born Dec. 23, 1920 in San Francisco, Calif., a daughter of the late Raymond and Blanche (Calvert) Dingeman. She graduated and received her bachelors degree from the University of Hawaii. She was a retired teacher from the Philadelphia area. She recipient of the "Cheshire Woman of the Year" award from the Masons in 1982 and she also received the League of Women Voters Award. Mrs. Stanwood was a volunteer at Gaylord Hospital for 32 years; a volunteer with the Literacy Volunteers of Connecticut; the Rookie Reader Program; a volunteer with the American Red Cross blood drives for 26 years and the voting polls. She was a past member of the Cheshire Community Chorus and Cheshire Garden Club and an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR.) She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Cheshire. Mrs. Stanwood was a U.S. veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of Lt. J.G. (Junior Grade.) While her father was stationed in Hawaii, she witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor.

She leaves a daughter, Emily S. Miller, MD of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Stanwood Moore.

A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, On-the-Green. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Scholarship Fund, 111 Church Drive, Cheshire, CT 06410 or to the Literacy Volunteers of America-Greater Waterbury Area, 267 Grand St., Waterbury, CT 06702.

Joseph J. Texira

MERIDEN -- Joseph J. Texira 51 of Meriden died Tuesday, May 7, 2002. He was born Sept. 15, 1950. He was survived by his wife, Sonja and their daughter, Jessica.

Services will be held on Sunday, May 12, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 262 Bee St., Meriden, CT 06450.

Robert T. Wilks

SOUTHINGTON -- Robert T. Wilks, 44, of 124 Berlin St., beloved husband of Candy (DeRoehn) Wilks, went to be with the lord in the big campground in the sky on Saturday, May 4, 2002.

He was son of Constance (Baranski) Pechka and her husband, George Pechka of Leesburg, Fla. Bob had been employed by Chancellor Gardens. He attended services at the Apple Valley Worship Center. He had also served in the Army during the Viet Nam era.

Besides his wife, mom and step-dad he is survived by his children, Paul and his wife, Amy of Meriden and Gregory and Jamie Lynn, both of Southington; a brother, Thomas and his wife, Jan of Southington; and sister, April May and her husband, Gary of Texas ; along with several nieces and nephews.

Services will be on Saturday, May 11, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 355 Main St., Cromwell. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to N.E.K., Amanda Joy Fund Box 156, Monterey, Mass 01245. The funds will be put toward dormitories on the camp grounds. The Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington has charge of arrangements.
