Jean P. Bilyak

WALLINGFORD -- Jean Perkowski Bilyak, beloved wife of the late George Bilyak of North Cherry St., Wallingford, died Friday, May 10, 2002 at the MidState Medical Center.

Born in Chicopee, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Anna Kondracki Perkowski and had been a lifelong Wallingford resident. She was employed by the former Feldman Dress Company in Wallingford for many years until her retirement. She was a member of St. Casimir's Polish National Catholic Church in Wallingford and the Wallingford Senior Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Delores Bozuchowski of Wallingford; her two sons, Walter G. Bilyak of Meriden and Richard E. Bilyak of Stafford Springs; her six grandchildren, Linda Manfreda, Kathryn Bilyak, Christine Bilyak, Dianne Bilyak, Jason Noyes and Lisa Bozuchowski; her great-granddaughter, Sarah Ann Manfreda; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Perkowski.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Wallingford Funeral Home. Interment will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to St. Casimir's Polish National Catholic Church, 240 Quinnipiac St., Wallingford, CT 06492 or to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

John F. Spain Sr.

SOUTHINGTON -- John F. Spain, Sr., 83, a resident of Southington for most of his life with the exception of 18 years spent living in the Buckingham section of Ft. Myers, Fla., passed into eternal bliss on Thursday, May 9, 2002.

He is survived by one son, John F. Spain, Jr. of Cheshire and Ft. Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Charlotte Serva and her husband, Bill of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Teresa Termine and her husband, Gary of Southington; his friend, Ruth Crocco; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, who were a source of exceptional pride and joy; several nieces and nephews also survive him. His loving wife of 56 years Bertha Hubeny Spain; and his daughter, Doreen Saucier predeceased him.

Prior to his retirement in 1982 he was a sales representative with the Torrington Supply Company of Waterbury for the last 25 years of an illustrious career in the wholesale plumbing heating and industrial supply business. A member of the U.S. Army tank Corps, serving from January of 1942 to January of 1946 he distinguished himself as a Tank Commander and 1st Lieutenant during his 16 month tour in the European Theater in World War II. His unit saw action in France, Belgium, participated in the Battle of the Bulge, fought throughout Germany and were the first American tanks to enter Berlin. He received the Bronze Star for bravery, he was wounded on April 12, 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart. In addition he was awarded the ET, a ribbon and four battle stars. Spain started an active career in the American Legion upon his return to Southington in 1946. He joined Kiltonic Post No. 72 and served in several positions culminating with the position of Post Commander in 1950. He then began a meteoric rise through several district and state elected positions within the American Legion organization and in 1956 was elected as the youngest Department Commander of the American Legion for the State of Connecticut. In 1957 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Connecticut Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his distinguished service to War Veterans in the State of Connecticut. A firm believer in duty to community and country Spain served on the Board of Police Commissioners in Southington for over 27 years, 1952-1979, and was it's Chairman on more than four occasions during his tenure. Spain was also manager and chairman of American Legion Baseball for several years. Additionally he has served as Parade Marshall for several Memorial Day and Veterans Day Parades. In 1962 he was awarded the UNICO Clubs Gold Medal of Honor for service and devotion to his community, an award he truly cherished. For the past several years he has kept his passion for the Boston Red Sox alive by serving as an usher for them at City of Palms Park during Spring Training in Ft. Myers, Fla. He also continued his efforts in raising funds for the young athletes who participate in playing American Legion Baseball for Kiltonic Post No. 72.

His family and friends will dearly miss this wonderful man's grace, compassion, dignity, character and story telling ability and this country has lost another one of its "greatest generation."

Friends may call at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, May 13, at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Bristol St., Southington, followed by interment at St. Thomas Cemetery. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to American Legion Junior Baseball, Kiltonic Post No. 72 Main St., Southington, CT. 06489.

Rose DiGiandomenico

MERIDEN -- Rose DiGiandomenico, 90, 277 Murray St., wife of the late Dr. Albert DiGiandomenico, died on Friday, May 10, 2002, at home surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness.

Born in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Antoinette (Petrucelli) Yanelli. She lived in Meriden all her life and attended Meriden schools. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church.

Rose is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law, Margo and James Bowman, Debra DiGiandomenicio; two granddaughters and their spouses, Kimberly and Rick Terrill, Kelly and Craig Altmannsberger. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Zachery and Madison Terrill, Casey and Colton Altmannsberger; and a sister, Mary Yanelli, all of Meriden; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Robert; two sisters, Carmela Scatton and Louise Sartucci; and two brothers, Dominic Yanelli and James Yanelli.

The funeral will be held on Monday, May 13, 2002, at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., and at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Franciscan Home Care, & Hospice Care, P.O. Box 4001, Meriden, CT 06450.

Charles R. Gorham

CHESHIRE -- Charles Richard Gorham, 71, of 176 Woodland Drive, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of Margaret (Wesson) Gorham.

Mr. Gorham was born May 2, 1931, in Tipp City, Ohio, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Lynch) Gorham and had resided in Cheshire for the past 35 years. He graduated from Westfield High School in Westfield, Mass. He attended one year at Cheshire Academy and also Holy Cross College, Worcester, Mass. Mr. Gorham graduated from Colby College, Waterville, Maine with a BA degree and was the president of The Perfection Fence Company of Waterbury for 42 years as well as a partner in Connecticut Fencemen of Stratford. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant in Field Artillery.

Besides his wife of 41 years, he leaves a son, Joseph E. Gorham of Cheshire; two daughters, Carol G. Gordon of Cheshire and Martha Bell of Blue Hill, Maine; a brother, John D. Gorham of Northfield, Conn.; and a sister, Ruth Hogan of Naples, Fla. He also leaves four grandchildren, Melissa Gordon, Leigh Ann Gordon, Steven Bell and Susan Bell. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Gorham.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at the Slater Funeral Home, 242 S. Main St., Cheshire, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Lennart G. Johnson

MIDDLETOWN -- Lennart G. Johnson, 63, formerly of Sears Street, Middletown, died Friday, May 10 at Mediplex of Wethersfield.

Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Gustav D. and Signe M. Johnson. Mr. Johnson had lived in New York City for over 40 years. He was an avid reader and enjoyed opera, art and the theater.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sonya Dupre of Wethersfield; one niece, Kristen Giordano of North Haven; and one nephew, Daniel Dupre of Buffalo, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Middletown, Tuesday, May 14 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Bruce A. Steinway, pastor, will officiate, and interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450. Doolittle Funeral Service, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, is in charge of arrangements.

Margery J. Keeney

WALLINGFORD -- Margery J. Keeney of Ashlar Village, passed away May 10, 2002, after a courageous fight with cancer. She was born in Hamden, December 16, 1917, a daughter of the late Nathan J. and Carrie Stedman Keeney Sr. and had resided in Hamden for many years before moving to Wallingford. She was employed as a secretary at the Northeast Engineering Co., a member of Trinity Church on the Green and later a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Hamden.

Miss Keeney is survived by her sister, Doris K. Brown Winchester of Hamden; two nephews, Ret. Col. Robert C. Brown and his wife Cindy of Colorado Springs, Colo., Leonard K. Brown and his wife Judy of East Barnard, Vt.; two grandnieces, Kelly Mendl and Carrie Ellen Brown; and a grandnephew, Eric Brown. She was predeceased by a brother, Nathan J. Keeney; and her best friend, William Loefstedt.

Relatives and Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, May 18, at 12:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 600 Shepard Ave., Hamden, with the Rev. Owen J. Sanderson officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements in care of Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be sent to the Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 600 Shepard Ave., Hamden, CT 06514.

Rose M. Mesite

MERIDEN -- Rose Mary Mesite, of 26 Edgewood St., died suddenly late Friday evening at MidState Medical Center.

Born in San Giovanni DiGerace, Italy, a daughter of the late Ralph and Theresa (Panetta) Mesite, she had resided in Meriden all her life. She was educated in the Meriden public schools and Laurel Business School. Rose was employed by New Departure, Hyatt Bearing Div. of Gen. Motors for 17 years and was vice president of Mesites Florists Inc. of Meriden. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

She is survived by a sister, I. Margaret Mesite, with whom she made her home; and a brother, Albert W. Mesite of Meriden; also several nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by three brothers, Patsy J. Frederick J. and Dominic J. Mesite.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, May 13 at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be in the family lot at Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., is in charge of the arrangements.

Arthur W. Schnabel

NEWINGTON -- Arthur W. Schnabel, 60, husband of Barbara Ann (Zuchowski) Schnabel, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at UConn Medical Center, Farmington.

He was born in New Britain, son of Edward H. Schnabel of Newington and the late Luella (Muller) Schnabel and had lived in Hartford before moving to Newington in 1970. Prior to his retirement, July 31, 1997, Mr. Schnabel was the Principal Auditor of Public Accounts for the State of Connecticut for 32 1/2 years. He was a Weaver High School graduate, class of 1960, a graduate of the University of Connecticut, class of 1964 and received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from The University of Hartford in 1970. He was an avid bridge player since 1970 at the Pitkin Community Center, Wethersfield. Arthur was an officer in numerous camera clubs, among them The Charter Oak Photographic Society, The Castle Craig Camera Club of Meriden and most recently the Country Camera Club of Kensington, where he served as a Past President, Contest Chairman and Editor of the club's bulletin. He was involved with the New England Camera Club Council (NECCC) and served as Vice President for many years and more recently as Bulletin Subscription Manager. He was a member of the New Britain Camera Club and had been a member of the former Nutmegar Camera Club. He was also a member of the Southington Genealogy Society and served as secretary. He was a volunteer at the Church of the Latter-Day Saints family history library. He was a longtime member of the (RRE) Railroad Enthusiast and had recently served as secretary. His greatest love in life was (CERM) the CT Eastern Railroad Museum where he served as Bulletin Editor for many years. He was intricately involved in the dedication, development and opening of the new roundhouse on Bridge St., Willimantic in June 2001. He was a former member of Bethany Lutheran Church, West Hartford and he was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Besides his wife and father, he is survived by his stepmother, Rachel Schnabel of Newington; a brother, Edward Alan Schnabel and his wife Lucyna of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; two nephews, Brian and Craig Schnabel of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; his aunt and godmother, Clara Muller of Bristol; and several cousins.

The funeral will be Tuesday, May 14, 2002, 11 a.m. at The Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Tpke., Wethersfield, with the Rev. Carl J. Anton, officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Gethsemane Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to CT Eastern Railroad Museum and CT Eastern Chapter, NRHS, Inc., P.O. Box 665, Willimantic, CT 06226.

Paul D. Armstrong

SOUTHINGTON -- Paul D. Armstrong, 46, of Parkview Drive, in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital following a long cardiac illness. He was the beloved son of Marion B. Armstrong and the late Arthur S. Armstrong.

Born in Southington, Nov. 24, 1955, Mr. Armstrong was a lifelong Southington resident. He had worked as a machinist for Pratt & Whitney in Southington and was a member of Mary Our Queen Church. He was a past president of the junior class at Southington High School, an avid baseball player and fan, and an avid fisherman.

Besides his mother, Marion, he is survived by two brothers, Arthur R. Armstrong and his wife, Maureen of Southington, and James M. Armstrong of Plantsville; three sisters, Trisha Tartaglino and her husband, Martin of Torrington, Jeanne Pichette and her husband, Ronald of Plantsville and Lynne Armstrong of Concord, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur S. Armstrong; and his brother, Stephen A. Armstrong.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Mary Our Queen Church, Southington. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville, CT.
