John V. Maher
MERIDEN -- John V. Maher, beloved husband of Roberta Maher, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at MidState Medical Center.
Born in Middletown, Dec. 31, 1925, a son of the late Anna Maher Ireton, he had resided in Meriden and Middletown all his life. He was president of the CT-MA Sprinklers Association, the 1st president of the U.A. Local 676 and went to serve one term as vice president, and two terms as financial secretary. After retiring he was appointed on the State of CT Fire Protection Sprinkler Filter Board. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy and was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church.
Besides his beloved wife of 50 years, he was a loving father to his son, John of Meriden; his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ron Stainton of Florida; his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jim Spencer of Middletown; and was a loving and devoted grandfather to three grandchildren, Amy and Lisa Spencer, and Randy Stainton. He also leaves a sister, Dolores Stone of Wethersfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 8:45 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Meriden. Burial, with military honors, will be in the State Veteran's Cemetery

Theresa M. Moffett
HAMPSTEAD, N.H. -- Theresa M. (Ford) Moffett 69, of Hampstead, N.H. and a former longtime resident of Salem, and Windham, N. H., died Sunday morning at the Holy Family in Methuen, Mass., after a brief illness.
She was born and educated in Lawrence, Mass. and graduated from St. Mary's High School. Mrs. Moffett worked as a secretary for Servciemaster of Salem, N.H. and she was a member of St. Matthew Church in Windham, N.H.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence E. Moffett of Hampstead, N.H.; one daughter, Linda Guilmet and her husband, Mark of Atkinson, N.H.; two sons, Stephen Moffett of Wallingford and Lawrence Moffett and his wife, Debbie of Londonderry, N.H.; two sisters, Joan Wilson of Lawrence, Mass. and Patricia Kentigian of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Church Range Road in Windham, N.H., followed by burial. Relatives and friends may call Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., in Salem, N.H. Alexander J. Olschefski Jr.
MERIDEN -- Alexander J. Olschefski Jr., 59, of 11 Oak St., died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Meriden, Dec. 21, 1942, the son of the late Alexander J. and Viola Bober Olschefski Sr. Mr. Olschefski was a lifelong resident of Meriden and was educated in local schools. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Keith Lusby of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; a sister, Barbara P. Olschefski of Meriden; and a nephew. He was predeceased by a son, Timothy Olscheski; and a sister, Valerie O. Galluzzo.
His funeral will be held, Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday, May 28, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Harriet M. Pratt
CLANTON, Ala. -- Harriet M. Pratt, 85, formerly of Meriden, widow of Howard Pratt, passed away on May 24, 2002. She was the daughter of the late George and Mary Ellen Cope.
She had worked for many years at Barker's Supermarket on East Main Street.
She is survived by three daughters and their spouses, Helen and Louis Bedard of Meriden, Carol Ann and Robert Logan II of East Hartford and Grace and Mitchell Gay of Delta Junction, Alaska. She is also survived by a brother, George Cope of East Hartford; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Dukett.
There are no calling hours. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Walnut Grove. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Allen G. Rode
HAMDEN -- Allen George "Dusty" Rode, 88, of Hamden Health Care Center and formerly of Dixwell Ave, entered into rest eternal, May 25, 2002.
Before joining the Air Force, he was a member and officer of 1136th Company, Civilian Conservation Corps and Grays Company, CT State Guard. He requested discharge to enter active service where he served with the Flying Tigers of Gen. Clare Chenault, China Liaison Mission, Military Advisory Group, Berlin Airlift and Fourth Fighter Interceptor Wing in Korea. He earned many recommendations during his 26 year tour of duty, serving in World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 88, and the V.F W.
He was the brother of Ethel F. Walker of Hamden and the late Hazel Lucy; son of the late George F. and Rebecca Allen Rode; uncle of Mrs. Joel (Barbara) Cassista of Cheshire, Mrs. Ernest (Judith) Creta of Branford, Mrs. Donald (Carol) Anthony of Cheshire, Mr. Lawrence Lucy of New Haven, Mrs. Gus (Hazel) Ciccotti of Meriden and Ms. MaryAnn Griffiths of Ansonia. Also survived by many great, great-great and great-great-greatnieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in Hamden Memorial, 1300 Dixwell Ave., Wednesday at 9:15 a.m., with Mass at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial with full military honors in State Veterans' Cemetery, Middletown. Birdena L. Harrington
MERIDEN -- Birdena Lucille Harrington, beloved wife of Merle Harrington, died Sunday at her home.
She was born in Perham, Maine, Sept. 7, 1927, daughter of the late Rufus and Evelyn Wardwell Sands. She had resided in Meriden for the past 47 years.
Besides her husband of 50 years, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Janos Nemeth and Alyssa and William Hepp; five grandchildren, Tracey Orne, Jennifer Champagne, Kevin Sobol, Yvonne Charpentier and Bethany St. Arnauld, all of Meriden.
Service will be private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements in care of Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
Andrew J. Klavins
MERIDEN -- Andrew J. Klavins, 38,of Washington Ave., formerly of Meriden, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 25, 2002.
Andrew was born in Newton, Mass., July 25, 1963, a beloved son of Judith Krosschell Klavins of Meriden and the late Andrew Klavins, was raised in Meriden, and attended Meriden schools. He has been a Meriden resident for many years, where he was a member of All Saints Parish, where he served as an acolyte for 13 years. He has been a North Haven resident for the past eight years, where he has been employed by Radio Frequency Systems (RFS Cable Wave).
Besides his beloved mother, Judith, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Jessica E. and Alex Lespier; and his brother, David M. Klavins, all of Meriden; two nieces, Brittney V. Klavins and Olivia A. Lespier; a nephew, Alex A. Lespier; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
His family will receive relatives and friends Friday from 4 to 6:45 p.m. at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford. A funeral service will be held in the Wallingford Funeral Home, Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Reverend Peter Bushnell, former Rector of All Saints Parish, will officiate. Interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery

John J. Mazzarella
MERIDEN -- John J. Mazzarella, 88, died Monday, May 27, 2002, peacefully at home with his family. He was the beloved husband of Mary Verdolini Mazzarella.
Born in Waterbury, June 18, 1913, he was the son of the late Antonio and Rose S. Barbera Mazzarella. He had resided in Meriden since 1948 and had attended Waterbury schools. Mr. Mazzarella worked at Verdolini's Restaurant since 1948 and was co-owner until his retirement in 1976. He had also worked for the City of Waterbury at one time. Mr. Mazzarella was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific Theatre. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, Mary, he was the loving father to daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Arthur Leary III of Wallingford and son, John (Jay) Mazzarella of Meriden. He was a special grandfather and friend to A.J. Leary of Washington D.C., Brendan Leary of Hoboken, N.J. and John W. Mazzarella Jr. of Wallingford. Mr. Mazzarella is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Steven, Dominick, Angelo and Anthony.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2002, at 9:45 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Claire G. Granger
MERIDEN -- Claire Gagnon Granger, of Douglas Drive, South Meriden, beloved wife of Harold F. Granger, passed away at their home on her 71st birthday, Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Mrs. Granger was born in Meriden, a daughter of the late Edward and Blanche Gagnon, had been a lifelong South Meriden resident, and was a parishioner of Holy Angels Church in South Meriden.
Besides Harold, her beloved husband of 51 years, she is survived by her daughter, Deborah Tortorella, of South Meriden; her three sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Deborah Granger, of Wallingford, Thomas and Denise Granger, of Meriden, and Edward and Fran Granger, of Wallingford; her eight grandchildren, Andrew Tortorella, Kelly Granger, Thomas Granger, Morgan Granger, Sandra Granger, Gia Artibani, Charrise Renda, David Artibani; many great-grandchildren; her three sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey and Angelo Lubrico, of Southington, Barbara and Norman Gagne, of Meriden, and Gloria and Anthony Celella, of Southington; her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Dorothy Gagnon, of South Meriden, many nieces and nephews; her friends, Tony Tortorella and Mitzi Godek; and everyone at Connecticut Dialysis Center in Meriden. She was predeceased by her grandson, Timothy Granger Jr., her brother, Edward Gagnon, and her sister, Eleanor Cioffi. Claire always had a kind word for everyone, a great sense of humor, and a smile for everyone who touched her life.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 9 a.m. from the Yalesville Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Holy Angels Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. interment will be in St. Laurent Cemetery
in South Meriden.
