Birdena L. Harrington

MERIDEN -- Birdena Lucille Harrington, beloved wife of Merle Harrington, died Sunday at her home.

She was born in Perham, Maine, Sept. 7, 1927, daughter of the late Rufus and Evelyn Wardwell Sands. She had resided in Meriden for the past 47 years.

Besides her husband of 50 years, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Janos Nemeth and Alyssa and William Hepp; five grandchildren, Tracey Orne, Jennifer Champagne, Kevin Sobol, Yvonne Charpentier and Bethany St. Arnauld, all of Meriden; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Service will be private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements in care of Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.

Andrew J. Klavins

MERIDEN -- Andrew J. Klavins, 38,of Washington Ave., North Haven, formerly of Meriden, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 25, 2002.

Andrew was born in Newton, Mass., July 25, 1963, a beloved son of Judith Krosschell Klavins of Meriden and the late Andrew Klavins, was raised in Meriden, and attended Meriden schools. He has been a Meriden resident for many years, where he was a member of All Saints Parish, where he served as an acolyte for 13 years. He has been a North Haven resident for the past eight years, where he has been employed by Radio Frequency Systems (RFS Cable Wave).

Besides his beloved mother, Judith, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Jessica E. and Alex Lespier; and his brother, David M. Klavins, all of Meriden; two nieces, Brittney V. Klavins and Olivia A. Lespier; a nephew, Alex A. Lespier; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

His family will receive relatives and friends Friday from 4 to 6:45 p.m. at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford. A funeral service will be held in the Wallingford Funeral Home, Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Reverend Peter Bushnell, former Rector of All Saints Parish, will officiate. Interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery will be private. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice.

Luis Ortiz

MERIDEN -- Luis Ortiz, 39, of Crown St., died Sunday, May 26, 2002 at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, surrounded by his family.

Born April 8, 1963 in Manhattan, N.Y., he was the son of Luis Ortiz and Esther Martinez.

He is survived by his father of New York and mother of Meriden; one daughter, Joanna Ortiz of New York; two brothers, Elias Ortiz of Meriden and Luis E. Ortiz of New York; three sisters, Elisa Ortiz of Puerto Rico, Karen Aponte of New York and Jeanette Sterling of Southington; also by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of services. Donations may be made to the family in Luis' memory.

Annette Ross

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Annette (Epstein) Ross, 71, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Meriden and Cheshire, died Monday, May 27, 2002 at the Tucson Medical Center. She was the wife of Dr. Zelly Ross.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late Mary Cheerman Epstein and Abraham Epstein. Mrs. Ross attended school in Brooklyn, later marrying and ultimately residing in Meriden. At one time, she served as the president of Meriden's Hadassah chapter at Temple B'nai Abraham.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Dr. Marc Ross and his wife, Nancy Ross of South Windsor, Kenneth C. Ross and his wife, Karin Ross of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dr. Alana Ross of Seattle, Wash.; she is also survived by a brother, Atty. Frank Epstein of El Cerrito, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Spencer and Elise Ross of South Windsor.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 30, at 11 a.m. in B'nai Abraham Cemetery with rabbi Gloria S. Rubin officiating. A period of mourning will be observed at the home of Marc and Nancy Ross of South Windsor, Thursday, May 30. Donations are requested to be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.

Dominic Valerie

SOUTHINGTON -- Dominic Valerie, 74, a resident of the Tantem Health Care Center, died Sunday, May 26, 2002. He was the husband of the late Geraldine Richards Valerie.

He was a former Meriden resident having lived in Blackstone Village for many years. He was born in Meriden, Dec. 3, 1927, a son of the late John and Mary Mettica Valeriay. He was educated in local schools. He was an U.S. Marine Corp veteran, having served in China after World War II. He retired from the Metal Shop of New Departure after over 30 years of employment. He was a musician, playing guitar in area bands, he especially enjoyed Country-Western Music and dancing. He was also a popular vocalist. As well as being an avid golfer, he held a private pilots license.

He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-laws, George and Veronica Valeriay of Meriden, Frank and Stacia Valeriay of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Joseph and Evelyn Valerie, also of Meriden; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and James Whitaker of Easley, S.C.; also two sisters-in-law, Susan Valeriay of Boca Raton, Fla., and Nic Valeriay of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Michael, John, Fred and Anthony Valeriay; and a sister, Elizabeth Korab.

His funeral will be held Friday, May 31, at 9:15 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, with his funeral liturgy at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He will be interred with military honors in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call in the funeral home Thursday, May 30, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Raymond J. Wollschlager

MERIDEN -- Raymond J. Wollschlager, 77, of 76 Butler St., died Sunday, May 26, 2002 at Westfield Care and Rehab Center.

Born in Meriden, Feb. 2, 1925, he was the son of the late Henry and Celia (Semrau) Wollschlager and had resided in Meriden all his life, he was educated in the School for the Deaf in West Hartford and had been employed by J.C. Penney Co., until his retirement. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church, a member of the Senior Citizens, also the CT Deaf Organization of Newington; Past President and Trustee for the Meriden Deaf Club; St. Mary's Men's Club; former member of Washington Park Drum Corps and the American Legion Drum Corps. He was also a former member of the Eagles Aerie No. 720 and a member of the F.R.A.T. of New Haven.

He is survived by a sister, Barbara Smith of Meriden; and a brother, Donald E. Wollschlager with whom he made his home; nieces and nephew, Dale and Aerona Smith, Charles and Suzanne Smith, Robert and Susan Smith and Kathleen and James Zuber; and a very dear friend, Howard Molyneux.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Omer A. Allard

WALLINGFORD -- Omer A. Allard, 86, of Hope Hill Road, Wallingford, beloved husband of Donalda Gamelin Allard, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center in Wallingford.

Born Oct. 15, 1915, in Manchester, NH, he was a son of the late Albert and Eugene Lavie're and had been a Wallingford resident for many years. He was employed by the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of North Haven for 25 years until his retirement, was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, was a past member of the VFW Major Raoul Lufbery Post 591 of Wallingford, a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a member of the Men's Club of the parish.

Besides his beloved wife Donalda, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Irene M. and Thomas H. Keithan; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond G. and Zalita A. Allard, and Robert R. and Kathleen L. Allard, all of Wallingford; his 12 grandchildren, Jamie R. Keithan of Wallingford, Cristen M. Barriera of Meriden, Stephanie L. Keithan of New Haven, Christopher M. Keithan of Wallingford, Donald Allard of Wallingford, Jeffrey LaMoria of Meriden, Mark R. Allard of Wallingford Craig R. Allard of Clinton, Melissa R. Bilotta of Woodbridge, Robert R. Allard Jr. of Waterbury, Tracy B. Allard of Wallingford and Scott T. Allard of Bennington, VT; seven great-grandchildren; his three sisters, Beatrice LaValle, Claire Caruthers and Yvette Fortin, all of Riverside, CA; his brother, Ralph Allard of Salem, VT; and several nieces and nephews.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, May 31, from the Yalesville Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford.

Nancy Andrews

CROMWELL -- Nancy Heller Andrews, 64, of 36 Agawam Drive, formerly of Meriden, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Born Dec. 1, 1937, in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Dorothea Kirschstein Heller Jr. She had been the office manager/bookkeeper at the Ridgeview Health Care Center in Cromwell until the time of her illness. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Meriden and was an avid sports fan and a member of the Timberline Golf Club in Berlin.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Wood of New Haven; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John F. and Anne Andrews of Meriden, and Christopher S. Andrews of Boca Raton, FL; a sister, Cynthia Isyk of Wilmington, NC, with whom she traveled extensively; a brother, Frederick W. Heller III of Lake Tahoe, CA; five grandchildren, Jessica Wood of New Haven, who cared for her during her illness, John F. Andrews, Daniel Andrews and Katherine Andrews, all of Meriden, Cameron Andrews of Boca Raton, FL; a cousin and dear friend, Cheryl Gudrian of Royal Palm Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at BEECHER & BENNETT FLATOW FUNERAL HOME, 32 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Wallace Merdinyan will officiate. Her family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for excellent care provided by Hartford Hospital and the Connecticut VNA. If desired, contributions may be made to Hartford Hospital, 80 Seymour St., Hartford, CT 06106, or to the Connecticut V.N.A. Hospice and Palliative Care Program, 33 N. Plains Industrial Road, Wallingford, CT 06492.

Isidro "Junior" Carrero

MERIDEN -- Isidro Carrero Jr., 48, formerly of Curtis Street, beloved husband of Margarita Orsini-Carrero, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000.

Born Oct. 26, 1951, in Rincon, Puerto Rico, he was the son of Isidro Carrero and the late Victalia (Lorenzo) Carrero. Junior attended St. Rose of Lima Church and was employed by Lori Lock as a machine operator for over 15 years.

Besides his wife of Meriden and father of East Hartford, he is survived by two sons, Eric Carrero and Robert Rodriguez, both of Meriden; four daughters, Jeanette and husband, Cliff Kulas of Plantsville, Magaly "Maggie" Carrero of Meriden, Rebecca and husband, Phil Talarico of New Britain, and Rosie Rodriguez of Meriden; four brothers, Benjamin and wife, Saida Carrero of East Hartford, Wilfredo Carrero of Hartford, Israel Carrero of Puerto Rico and Jose Carrero of East Hartford; three sisters, Zoraida Carrero of Puerto Rico, Gloria Rodriguez of New York and Sara Negron of East Hartford. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Nathan, Krystle, Kevin and Michael; and many nieces and nephews. Junior was predeceased by a sister, Carmen Rodriguez.

Funeral services and burial will take place in Rincon, Puerto Rico. Family and friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 31, at the Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family in Junior's memory. Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
