George A. Spinelli

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- George A. Spinelli, 87 of Hollywood, Fla., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002. A resident of 44 years coming from Meriden.

He was predeceased by wife, Marion; and son, Joseph. He is survived by a son, Michael; daughter, Sandra Shoaff; brothers, John Spinelli and Frank Bevacqua; sisters, Helen Cacioli, Rose Sioch, Mary Patzke, Josephine Sherman, Natalie Ring, Flora Faticone and Angie Picard; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Vitas Hospice charitable Fund, 5420 NW 33rd Avenue, No. 100, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. 33309. Arrangements by Panciera Memorial Home, 4200 Hollywood Road, Hollywood, Fla. 33021.

Vaughn R. Bates

WILLINGTON -- Vaughn R. Bates, 73, of Y Road, Willington, devoted husband of 51 years of Shirley (Lincoln) Bates, died peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2002, with his family at his side.

He was born Oct. 22, 1928 in Rocky Hill, son of Walter and Olive (Whitehouse) Bates. Vaughn was a 20-year Air Force veteran, retiring as a Master Sergeant. While in the military, he was a member of the U.S. Air Force Band and also served as a recruiter in Connecticut. He owned and operated Bates' Republic UConn Texaco Station in Storrs since 1968. As a member of the Federated Church of Willington, he served on various boards and committees. He was also a member of the Mansfield Lion's Club, the Echo Grange and was a former member of the Willington Board of Education. Vaughn enjoyed sailing and power boats.

He was the devoted father of Scott Bates and his wife, Karen of Storrs, Donna Werkhoven and her husband, Carl of S. Windsor and Colleen Bombria and her husband, James of Bolton; he is also survived by a brother, Donald Bates of Cheshire; a sister, Louise Wheeler of Wallingford; six grandchildren, Lindsay, Chelsea, Jessica, Zachary, Hunter and Kelly; and many nieces and nephews.

His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195), Willimantic, on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Hall Memorial Church, Rte. 32, South Willington, with the Rev. Mark Larson officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Central Village. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial donations to the Steeple Restoration Fund of the Federated Church of Willington, 132 River Road, Willington, CT 06279.

Isabella E. Courchesne

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Isabella E. Courchesne, 76, passed away Friday, May 31, 2002, in Florida.

She was born Aug. 3, 1925 in Somerville, Mass., moving to Florida in 1991 from Newport, N.H. She was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Sarasota, Fla.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Jane Massaro of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons, Robert of Meriden and Harold of Elm City, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Brown & Sons Funeral Homes, 26th St. Chapel, Bradenton, Fla. There will be no calling hours.

Pauline S. Gasecki

SOUTHINGTON -- Pauline S. Gasecki, 80, of Merritt Island, Fla., formerly of Plantsville section of Southington, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the Cape Canaveral Hospital in Florida. She was the wife of the late Adolph Gasecki.

Born in Southington on Aug. 1, 1921, the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Grondzik Samsel, Pauline had been a longtime area resident before moving to Florida in 1981. She worked as an Underwriter at Travelers Ins. Co. in Hartford for 20 years, retiring in 1981. She and her husband Adolph moved to Merritt Island, Fla., where she became active in the WINGS (When In Need Give Support) Group of the Divine Mercy Church.

Pauline is survived by two sons, James and Raymond Gasecki, both of Newington; her two daughters, Lucille Gasecki of Mississippi and Linda Larson Schwartz of Randolph, Mass.; two brothers, Joseph and Edward Samsel, both of Southington; two sisters, Rose Sponzo of Plantsville and Sandra Laney of California; also seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, John Samsel; and her three sisters, Mary Samsel, Jenny Samsel and Edna Labreque.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, at 8 a.m. from the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, June 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Pauline may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, P.O. Box 4284 Pittsfield, Mass 01202-4284.

Kathleen K. Sheppard

SOUTHINGTON -- Kathleen K. Sheppard, 81, of 243 South End Road, Plantsville section, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002.

She is survived by a son, James J. Sheppard of Plantsville; three daughters, Mary Jarvis, Kathleen Grindle and her husband, Ron, all of Beauford, S.C.; Luann Plourde and her husband, Gary of Southington; a sister, Mary Morganson of Meriden; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Mary Our Queen Church, 248 Savage St. Plantsville. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. has charge of arrangements. Donations may be made in her memory to the Hospice of Central CT; 40 East St. Plainville, CT 06062.

Beatrice M. Spratta

BERLIN -- Beatrice Marie Spratta, 85, died at home unexpectedly on Friday, May 31, 2002.

Born in Waterbury, June 29, 1916, she was the daughter of the late James and Ella Ferrucci Spratta. Miss Spratta had resided in Berlin for the past eight years, living most of her life in Meriden. She attended Waterbury schools and was employed at the International Silver Co. for many years, retiring in 1982. Miss Spratta was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and St. Paul's Church in Kensington. She was a member of the Meriden Senior Center and enjoyed playing bingo at Mt. Carmel on bingo nights.

She is survived by four sisters and a brother-in-law, Josephine Leary and Dorothy Orsini, both of Meriden, Rosemary Vecca of Southington and Margaret and Anthony Orlando of Meriden; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Vincent Spratta and Anthony and Dolores Spratta, all of Meriden. Miss Spratta is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Brian and Diane Owens of Kensington. She was predeceased by two sisters, Lucy Celantano and Louise Cleveland; and a brother, Johnny Spratta.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Carl P. Andreas

WALLINGFORD -- Carl P. Andreas, 76, of Hallmark Hill Drive, beloved husband of Ann Jean, died Sunday, June 2, 2002.

He was born in East Hartford and served as a pharmacist's mate with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After being discharged, he returned to school to prepare for his natural role, that of mentor. For nearly four decades, he served as a dedicated teacher, principal and administrator in the Milford public school system. After retirement, he pursued his interests in nature and sports, especially UConn basketball. He particularly enjoyed going with his wife to their house in Cape Cod.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Robert and his wife, Deborah; by his brother, Donald A. and his wife, Nancy; and by his brother, Robert W. They lost their beloved brother, Henry, husband of Florence, in 1997.

He was a man of unyielding integrity and sacrifice.

His family will received relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery in North Haven. Gifts in his memory, may be sent to either Most Holy Trinity Church Preservation Project, 68 North Colony St., Wallingford, CT 06492, or to the charity of one's choice.

Mark D. Fletcher

SOUTHINGTON -- Mark D. Fletcher, 50, of Old Turnpike Rd., died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center.

Mark was born in Meriden, Jan. 16, 1952, and had been a Southington resident for the past 10 years, having previously lived in Wallingford. He had been a salesman at Bob's Furniture in Simsbury for several years.

He is survived by his daughter, Adrian Fletcher of Southington; his mother and step-father, Ann Grillo Fletcher Lapico, and Frank Lapico of Southington; his father and step-mother, Dennis Fletcher and Kathleen Fletcher of Mystic; his brother and sister-in-law, Arthur Fletcher and Sharyn Fletcher of Westbrook; a nephew, Craig Fletcher and his wife, Leigh Ann Fletcher of Westbrook; his former wife, Rita Collin Fletcher of Southington; two step-daughters, Jennifer Micacci and Michelle Smola; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

His family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at Mary Our Queen Church, Southington. Interment will be at Saint John Cemetery, Wallingford.

Thadeus T. Furtak

HAMDEN -- Thadeus T. Furtak, 74, of 835 Mix Ave., Apt. 504, died May 31, 2002. He was the husband of Theresa Curcio Furtak.

He was the former co-owner of Harmac Tool & Die Co.

He is the father of Mrs. Paul (AnnMarie) Thompson and Mrs. Albert (MaryJane) Cunha and Robert (Maureen) Furtak, all of East Haven and Mrs. Thomas (Barbara Jean) Cushing of Killingworth; brother of Sophie Popieniek of Meriden and Joseph Furtak of Hamden and the late Jane Kaska, Edward and Leon Furtak; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by an infant son, John Joseph Furtak.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden and at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clelian Center, 261 Benham St., Hamden or Conn. Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT.
