Joseph F. Longofano

EAST HAVEN -- Joseph F. Longofano, 71, of 165 Short Beach Road, died June 22. He was the husband of Rose Travasano Longofano. Mr. Longofano was the owner and operator of Colony Auto Seat Cover in Wallingford for 30 years prior to his retirement. Beside his wife he is survived by 2 sons, Rev. Joseph F. Longofano Jr. of Danbury and Michael J. Longofano of Milford; a daughter, Lisa Sarkisian of Portland; a brother, Frank Longofano of West Haven; 4 sisters, Antoinette DeVivo of North Haven, Carmelina Zimbardi of East Haven, Josephine Belli of Westbrook and Phyllis Vandermalen of Clinton; and 6 grandchildren. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Mary Aceto and Anna Uss.

Friends may call at the Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., New Haven Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Trinity Church, Wallingford Thursday morning at 9:00. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Wallingford.

Gwendolyn T. Sjovall

WALLINGFORD -- Gwendolyn Tulipani Sjovall, RN., 71, of Ridgecrest Road, Wallingford, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at her residence, after a seven year battle with a rare cancer. She was the beloved wife of 50 years of William C. Sjovall, Sr.

Mrs. Sjovall was born in Ridgefield, September 1, 1930, a daughter of the late Julius and Lily Hines Tulipani, she was a Wallingford resident for many years. She was a graduate of St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Bridgeport, and had been employed by the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford for many years where she held numerous positions in the nursing department, until her retirement in 1992.

Besides her beloved husband William, she is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law, Charlene Sjovall-Smith, of New Britain, Kristine Malkowski and her husband Dennis, of North Attleboro, MA, her three sons and two daughters-in-law, William C.Sjovall, Jr. and his wife Donna, of Morristown, NJ, Michael S. Sjovall of Syracuse, NY and Erik Sjovall and his wife Deborah, of Colchester; her seven grandchildren, Jason and Megan Smith, Katherine Malkowski, Gregory and Elissa Sjovall, and Matthew and Sarah Sjovall; her sister, Phyllis Franceschini, and her brother, J. Robert Tulipani, both of Ridgefield, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass of Christian Burial, Monday, July 1, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 382 Hope Hill Road, Yalesville section of Wallingford. Interment will be in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. THERE WILL BE NO CALLING HOURS. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the Cancer Partnership, c/o MidState Medical Center, 435 Lewis Ave., Meriden, CT 06451. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main Street, Yalesville.

Gertrude Hedwig Sklagen

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Gertrude Hedwig Sklagen, 89, wife of the late Felix Sklagen died Thursday, June 20, 2002 in St. Petersburg, FL.

A committal service for Gertrude will be held TODAY, Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at 12:00 Noon in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. The Rev. Edmond Nadolny will officiate.

Gertrude was the daughter of the late Lincoln and Hedwig (Bachelor) Roberts. She is survived by three brothers, Lincoln Roberts of Decatur, GA, John Roberts of Pacolet, S.C., Daniel Roberts of Burke, VA, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, CT.

Anna Y. Studley

MERIDEN -- Anna Y. Studley, 88, of Meriden, died June 21, at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was born Dec. 14, 1913 in Glen, New York, a daughter to the late Charles and Helen Yurkewecz. She married Theodore M. Studley in St. Patrick's Church in Glen, NY., on Sept. 15, 1933. She attended Uconn in the late 1930's. Following graduation she was employed by the state of NY as a dietician.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Mary Yurkewecz of New Canaan, CT.

There are NO calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 East Main St., Meriden, is handling the arrangements.

Walter J. Telford Jr.

MERIDEN -- Walter Joseph Telford Jr., 73, of 181 Metacomet Dr., husband of the late Jeanine Breton Telford, died on Sunday, June 23, 2002, at New Britain General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Guilford, the son of the late Walter J. Sr. and Anna Kennelly Telford, he had resided in Meriden since 1959 and attended Madison schools. Mr. Telford was employed by S.N.E.T. for 39 years, before retiring in1987, and was currently employed by Century 21 Access America Realtors. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church.

He is survived by a daughter: Mary Post of Cromwell; three sons and daughters-in-law: W. Kurt and Betty Telford of Clemmons, NC., Alan and Christine Telford of Granite Bay, CA., and Glenn and Carol Telford of Wallingford; ten grandchildren; three sisters: Lillian Reeder of Old Saybrook, Rita Hill of Pittsburgh, PA., and Evelyn Gannon of Wallingford; a brother: Paul Telford of Hamden; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters: Anna Burns and Marie Gartner; and a brother: John Telford.

The Funeral will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meiden, and at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450-1004.

Harriet Fiveash

SOUTHINGTON -- Harriet Abetz Fiveash, 92, of Church St., in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Bradley Memorial Hospital.

Born in Plantsville, Feb. 11, 1910, the daughter of the late George W. and MaryJane Aspinall Abetz, Harriet had been a local resident since 1945. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Harriet is survived by her four daughters, Beverly McKay, Betty F. Ledoux, Mary Lou Jewell and Deanna Montague, all of Southington; also 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters. She was predeceased by three brothers; three sisters; one grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 1:30 to 2 p.m. before the service.

Robert S. Mencarini

MERIDEN -- Robert S. Mencarini, 71, of 37 Rem Drive, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 in the Hartford Hospital

There will be calling hours Thursday, June 27, in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden from 4 to 8 p.m. His funeral will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. A complete obituary will be published in Thursday's edition of the Record-Journal.

Clarence R. Osborn

SOUTHINGTON -- Clarence Russell Osborn, 84, of 226 Berlin St., died on Monday, June 24, 2002 at home. He was the adoring husband of Phyllis (Tuttle) Osborn.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1917 in Winsted, the son of Clarence L. and Grace G. Osborn. Ozzy, as he was affectionately known to many, attended schools in Winsted and graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1937. He served in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946. He was stationed in China, Burma and India. He worked for the Southern New England Telephone Company and retired in 1976. Ozzy was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, he was a loyal member of Victory Grange, the Telephone Pioneers, the American Legion and the VFW.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Janet Davis of Harpwell, Maine and Alys Hickcox of Rochester, N.H.; a son, Russell F. Osborn of Southington; a sister, Elinor; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Helen G. Osborn; and a brother, Harry Osborn.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 28, at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 121 Pleasant St., Southington. Burial with military honors will follow at Forest View Cemetery, Winsted.

Charles R. Bowe Jr.

DURHAM -- Charles Robert Bowe, Jr., of Durham, died Sunday, June 23,2002, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Joan M. Mitchell Bowe.

Born in Hartford, he was a son of the late Katherine Daly Bowe, and was a Wallingford resident until moving to Durham 35 years ago. He was a graduate of Holy Trinity School and Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, and employed by Cytec of Wallingford for many years until his retirement in 1996. Charlie was a one of a kind great guy. He would go out of his way to do anything to help others. He was always kind, sincere and loving. He was very involved in the community and Notre Dame Church, in Durham, of which he was a parishioner and a member of the church council for many years. He was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 12289 of Durham and a member of the Benchwarmers of Coginchaug High School of Durham.

Besides his beloved wife Joan, he is survived by his four children, his son, Charles R. Bowe III and his wife, Nancy of Madison; his daughter, Lori Susi and her husband, Michael of Westbrook; his daughter, Brenda Waldner and her husband, Mark of Portland; and his son, Kevin Bowe of Durham and his fiancee, Kelly Small of Yantic; his four grandchildren, Mark Waldner, Nicole Waldner, Caroline Bowe and Ethan Mathieu; and his two cousins, Norman Hines of North Carolina, and George Daly of Wallingford.

Charlie will be remembered for his long stories and funny jokes. His sense of humor and great personality would never go unnoticed. He was a good father, who always supported his children and wife, and leaves a wide circle of cherished friends. He will be missed by all.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Notre Dame Church in Durham, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Mica Hill Cemetery in Durham. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to Notre Dame Church, 280 Main St., Durham, CT 06422, or to the Knights of Columbus, c/o Joe Bannak, 307 Haddam Quarter Road., Durham, CT 06422.

Barbara Conte

WALLINGFORD -- Barbara McMenamin Conte, 73, of Wallingford, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the Meriden Center. She was the beloved wife of the late William P. Conte, Sr.

Born in Wallingford, April 1, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Violet DesJardins McMenamin Gargaly and had been a lifelong resident of Wallingford. She was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford.

She was the loving mother of four daughters and three sons-in-law, Leslie and Robert Jacques Sr. of the Yalesville section of Wallingford, Shelly Conte, Kim and Timothy Ryan and Dara and Thomas Cossette, Sr., all of Wallingford; 13 grandchildren, Robert Jacques Jr. and Meg Jacques, Brandi and Thomas Sarricini, Tory Jacques, Heather Ryan, Cortney Ryan, Ashley Cossette, T.J. Cossette, Danielle Cossette, Heide Conte, William P. Conte III, and Marc Findley; her great-granddaughter, Alyssa Sarracini; her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy D. and Ralph S. Jordan of North Haven and Judith A. and Martin A. Cassella of Wallingford; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, William P. Conte Jr.; her granddaughter, Melissa Ryan, her sister, Joyce DeDominicis; and her stepfather, John Gargaly.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to the Church of the Resurrection where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford.
