Charles E. Flickinger Sr.

MERIDEN -- Charles E. Flickinger Sr., 82, of Meriden passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at the Curtis Home, Meriden.

He was born in Middletown, Dec. 26, 1919, son of the late H.J. and Lela (Spencer) Flickinger, and had resided in Meriden for several years, having formerly lived in East Hampton for 30 years. Before his retirement he was employed by Hillside Industries, Middletown. Charles was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II.

He is survived by a son, Charles E. Flickinger Jr. and his wife, Charlotte of Carmel, N.Y.; three daughters, Linda Finnigan of Meriden, Susan Harlan and her husband, Richard of San Jose, Calif., and Robbin Ruffino of Meriden; a sister-in-law, Virginia Flickinger; seven grandchildren; and a niece, Barbara Flickinger. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Melissa; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Dorothy Flickinger.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Spencer Funeral Home, 112 Main St., East Hampton with the Rev. Thomas Kennedy, minister of the East Hampton Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Those who wish may send memorial contributions to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 185 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, CT 06109.

Stuart C. Hemingway

BREMEN, Maine -- Stuart Clayton Hemingway passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at his home in Bremen, Maine, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 17, 1916 in Geneva, N.Y., the son of the late Stuart and Madaline Cooney Hemingway. He graduated from The Hotchkiss School in 1934 and continued his education at Yale University, graduating in the class of 1939. In 1941, Stuart enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Navy Pilot in the Pacific. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service and was honorably discharged in 1945 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He joined the International Silver Company in Meriden, in 1939, achieving the position of Corporate Vice President and Director. In 1950 he and his family resided in Cheshire. In 1973, he was named President of Towle Silversmiths in Newbury, Mass.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Ogden Hemingway of Bremen, Maine; daughters, Louise Statton and husband, Sam of Dallas, Texas , Susan Hemingway of Dallas, Texas and Ann Chamberlain and husband, John of Toronto, Canada; sons, Stuart Hemingway III and wife, Suzanne of Charlotte, N.C., and Robert Hemingway and wife, Julie of Salem, Mass.; brother, Richard Hemingway of Houston, Texas ; sisters, Jean Hemingway of Rumford, R.I., Nancy Symington of Camden, Maine, and Caroline Norton of Bremen, Maine. Stuart was devoted to his family and was greatly adored by his children; 10 grandchildren; and 26 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Stuart's life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Bremen Union Church, Route 32 in Bremen, Maine. In memory of Stuart, donations may be made to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 pleasant St., Rockland, Maine 04841. Arrangements under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro, Maine.

Peter M. Keefe

CUMBERLAND, R.I. -- Peter M. Keefe, 43, of 4 Anvil Drive, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Paula M. (Fleurant) Keefe.

Born Oct. 25, 1958 in New Haven, he was the son of Daniel and Ann (Claydon) Keefe Sr. He resided in Cumberland, R.I., for the past 21 years, previously living in Boston, New York and North Haven. He was an Account Executive for Websource Inc., a division of Georgia Pacific for the past two years. He was previously employed by the RIS Paper Company of Boston and Providence for 21 years. He was also formerly employed by the Thomas Claydon Printing Company, New York and Southern New England Type of Hamden. He was a member and recently Chairman of Golf at the Wannamoisett Country Club. He was active in the promotion of the Junior Golf Program as the Junior Golf Chairman for the last eight years. He was also a member of the Rhode Island Golf Association. He was a member of the Printing Industry Association, Vermont/New Hampshire Direct Marketing Group, New England Paper Trade Association and the Providence Advertising Club. He was also active in the National Paper Trade Association. He was a past member of the Printing House Craftsman's Club.

Besides his wife and parents, he leaves three sons, Daniel P. Keefe, Michael T. Keefe and Kevin R. Keefe, all of Cumberland, R.I.; four brothers, Thomas C. Keefe of Palm City, Fla., Daniel T. Keefe Jr. of North Haven, John Keefe of Westfield, Mass., and Brendan Keefe of Houston, Texas ; four sisters, Kathleen Keefe of New York, N.Y., Grace Huebscher of Chevy Chase, Md., Susan Kelly of Mount Airy, Md., and Mary Hatch of Portugal; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend calling hours Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. His funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the J.J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Meriden Road, Route 122, Cumberland, R.I. A Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Aidan Church, Cumberland. Burial will be in the Ressurection Cemetery, Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peter M. Keefe Junior Golf Memorial Fund, I/C/O Golf Foundation of Rhode Island, One Button Hole Drive, Suite One Providence, R.I. 02902 or Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, 169 George St., Pawtucket, R.I. 02860.

Robert C. Melmer

MIDDLEFIELD -- Robert C. Melmer, of 45 Strickland Road, Middlefield, husband of Eleanor (Bowie) Melmer, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at his home.

Born in Meriden, he was the son of the late Frederick and Louise (Felske) Melmer. Mr. Melmer was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was born and raised in Meriden, moving to Middlefield in 1964. For most of his life, he was a carpenter and homebuilder with his father. He was employed by AMF Cuno in Meriden for 11 years as a security guard.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Mark F. and his wife, Shirley Melmer of Meriden; one brother-in-law, Fred J. Post of Middletown; one grandchild, Samantha Melmer of Middletown; one step-grandson, Michael Curnow of Middletown; two nephews; and two great-nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Doris M. Post.

Private graveside services will be held at the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown on Thursday, Aug. 15. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Middlefield Federated Church, Capital Campaign Fund, 402 Main St., Middlefield, 06455. Doolittle Funeral Service, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, is in charge of arrangements.

Jose R. Sanchez

MERIDEN -- Jose R. Sanchez, 65, of 55 Willow St., died suddenly Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at MidState Medical Center.

Born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico on April 20, 1937, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Maximino Sanchez, he had resided in Meriden for the past 40 years. He was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for 15 years prior to his retirement. Mr. Sanchez was a member of the Latin-American Club, loved to play dominoes and spend time with his family.

He is survived by his former wife, Bernardita M. Sanchez; three daughters, Elizabeth Lebron of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, Carmen Ruiz of West Hartford, Benita M. Sanchez of Meriden; five sons, Jose M. Sanchez Jr. of Meriden, Victor L. Sanchez of E. Hartford, Max Sanchez of Hamden, Alex Sanchez and Jorge Sanchez, both of Meriden; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters; one brother; and several nieces and nephews; he is also survived by his companion, Isabel Vale. He was predeceased by a brother, Luis Sanchez.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Eleanor W. Landino

SOUTHINGTON -- Eleanor W. Landino, 86, of 514 Main St., died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Angelo J. Landino.

Born in Plainville on Nov. 9, 1915, the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Catherine DiYulio. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church and a member of St. Rita's Circle.

She is survived by two sons, Richard and his wife, MaryAnn Landino and Ralph and his wife, Barbara Landino, all of Southington; eight grandchildren, Dean, Christina and Michael Landino, Shari and her husband, Kerry Baillargeon, Beth and her husband, Bryant Chatfield, David and his wife, Valerie Landino, Philip and his wife, Beth Landino and Jennifer and her husband, Jason Doty; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Cormier of Plainville, Ernestine and her husband, Kenneth Carlson of Forestville, Sylvia Cunningham of Plainville, Jane and her husband, Robert Bachman of Forestville; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph and William DiYulio and Andrew Schuster; three sisters, Pauline O'Dell, Jenny Rampone and Philomena Angels.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in her memory to New Britain General Hospital-Dialysis Unit, 100 Grand St., New Britain, CT 06050.

Angela Melican

SOUTHINGTON -- Angela (Passaretti) Melican, 55, of Southington, formerly of Windsor, passed away after living with colon cancer for 2 1/2 years. Angela had been married to her loving husband, Bill for 31 years.

She was born in Hartford, the daughter of Concetta "Connie" (Musolino) Passaretti of Windsor and the late Joseph Passaretti. Angela was a graduate of Windsor High School in 1965 and had been a medical transcriptionist for Dr. Russell Chiappetta of Southington since 1983. Over the years Angela gave generously of her time to the Hatton School PTO, The Girl Scouts of America and Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church and a member of St. Thomas Ladies Guild.

Including her husband and mother, she leaves her daughter, Lauren Bernier and her husband, Jay of Southington; her brother, Louis Passaretti of Enfield; her sister, Joann Carlson and her husband, Larry of Manchester; also her niece, Debra Bologna and her husband, Geno; and their two sons, Geno and Joey of Somers; her nephew, Joseph Passaretti and his wife, Jessica and their son, Louis of Plainville; and her niece, Stephanie Allen of Manchester; Angela was proud to be godmother to Debra, Stephanie and Holly Joy Williams of Rutland, Mass.

The family wishes to thank the medical staff of the E1 wing of New Britain General Hospital and Hospice of Central CT. The funeral will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in her memory to the George Bray Cancer Center, Support Group Parking, N.B.G.H. 100 Grand St. New Britain, CT 06050 of John F. Kennedy Middle School, Library Fund, 1071 S. Main St. Plantsville, CT 06479.

Clara Gagliardi

NEW BRITAIN -- Clara (Kochanowicz) Gagliardi, 79, of New Britain, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002.

She was born in New Britain, daughter of the late Anthony and Anna (Sundaj) Kochanowicz and was a lifelong resident. She was the widow of Joseph Gagliardi, who died March 1, 2002. Clara was the manager of the Fairview Market which was located on the corner of Fairview and Pleasant St., in New Britain, for over 40 years, which was founded by her father and mother.

She is survived by two sons, Paul A. Gagliardi and his wife, Cindy of Southington and Peter A. Gagliardi of New Britain; two grandchildren, Lisa an Marina Gagliardi; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother; and three sisters.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. at the New Britain Memorial/Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Virginia Herbert

MERIDEN -- Virginia "Ginger" Herbert, 69, of 6 Willis Ave., wife of John Herbert, died on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Born in St. Clair, Pa., on Feb. 19, 1933, the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Skiba) Davidovich, she had resided in Meriden for the past 44 years. Mrs. Herbert was educated in Pennsylvania schools. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church, the Emblem Club of the Meriden Elks Club and the Senior Citizens.

Besides her husband, John, she is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Poccia of Wallingford; two sons, Jack Herbert of Madison, Wis., and Ted Herbert of Meriden; two grandchildren, Marisa and Nicolas Poccia of Wallingford; one sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Harvey Mitchell of Seaford, Del.; and one sister-in-law, Irene Davidovich of Wallingford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Olga Davis of St. Clair, Pa., and George and Sophie Davis of Norfolk, Va.; also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Bollick; and two brothers, Michael Davis and Albert Davidovich.

The funeral will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. in SS Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. A Panakhida Service will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to SS. Peter and Paul Refurbishing Fund, P.O. Box 334, Meriden, CT 06450 or to St. Ignatius, 4912 Scofield St., Monona, Wis 53716.
