MASCONE, Emilio "Tony" A.
Emilio "Tony" A. Mascone, 79, of East Hartford, died Wednesday, (May 24, 2000) at a local nursing home. He was the widower of Cecilia (Barone) Mascone. He was born in Hartford, and lived in the area for many years. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran. He was employed at Allen Manufacturing Co. as a toolmaker until his retirement. He was a member of the VFW, East Hartford, the Fifty Plus Dance Club of Bozrah, the Army & Navy Club of Manchester, and the North End Senior Citizens of East Hartford. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard A. and Diane Mascone of Ojai, CA; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Frances and Anthony Privitera of Coventry and Philomena Holland of East Hartford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Attilo and Beatrice Mascone of Silver Springs, MD, and Victor and Lorraine Mascone of South Windsor; a granddaughter, Joanne M. Mascone of Ojai, CA; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews. He also leaves a special friend, Blanche Conant of Vernon. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne A. Mascone, and a sister, Eva Johnson. Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 27, 8:15 a.m. from the Callahan Funeral Home, 1602 Main St., East Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, East Hartford. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hours are Friday, May 26, 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

FREEMAN, Doris B.
Doris B. Freeman, 83, of Seminole, FL died Tuesday (October 3, 2000) in Largo, FL. She was born in Presque Isle, ME. She was an elementary school teacher at the Maybelle-Avery Elementary School for 33 years, and also with the Somers School System in Somers. She moved to Florida in 1978 from Somers. She is survived by a daughter, Marianne Ives of Seminole, FL; two granddaughters, Sara Courtney and Tara Ives, both of Seminole, FL; a great-grandchild, Sierra Courtney of Seminole, FL; three sisters, Kathleen Beckwith of Presque Isle, ME, Barbara Damon of Virginia Beach, VA, and Margaret Roope of Roanoke, VA. She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Freeman Sr. who died Sept. 28, 1981. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, St. Petersburg, FL, TODAY, Oct. 5, at 12:30 p.m. with Interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Petersburg, FL. FOX, Marshall I.
Marshall I. Fox, 88, of East Granby, beloved husband of Norma (Nolan) Fox, died Wednesday, (May 24, 2000) at MeadowBrook of Granby. Born in East Granby, son of the late John and Minnie (Pease) Fox, he was a lifelong resident. He had been employed at the Rollins Grain Store in East Granby, retiring in 1976 after 35 years with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford. He was a former member of the Farmington Valley Square Dance Club, the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Club, and a member of the East Granby Senior Citizens. He was a member of the South Congregational Church in Granby. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Ted Engelke, of East Granby; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Ann Fox, of Milton, VT; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Jane Linnell, of Rangeley, ME; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur Fox and Earl Fox; and two sisters, Alta Batayte and Ruth LaPlant. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 27, 11 a.m., at the South Congregational Church, 242 Salmon Brook St., Granby, with the Rev. Dr. Geordie Campbell officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Tariffville. His family will receive friends at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby, Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the East Granby Volunteer Ambulance, P.O. Box 100, East Granby, CT, 06026.

CHAMP, Daniel N., Jr.
Daniel N. Champ, Jr., 86, of Glastonbury, died Sunday (May 21, 2000). He was the husband of the late Ann (Picone) Champ. Born September 29, 1913, in Hartford, he was the son of the late Daniel and Theresa (Pinto) Champ. He had been a resident of South Glastonbury for the past 32 years. He had been retired from the Peasley Construction Company for several years. He is survived by two daughters, Marie McCarthy and her husband, John of Manchester, and Theresa D'Addeo and her husband. Tony of Glastonbury; six grandchildren, John McCarthy and his wife, Pamela of East Haddam, Tony McCarthy of Manchester, Peter D'Addeo and his wife, Carmela of Rocky Hill, Justine Neild of Glastonbury, Daniel D'Addeo and his wife, Kathy of Glastonbury, and Joseph D'Addeo of Glastonbury; nine great-grandchildren, Jarod, Laina, Peter, Cassandra, Steven, Kristopher, Nickie, Lauren and Daniel. Also devoted to him was his sister, Mary Preli of Glastonbury; and his niece, Joyce Samiotis of East Hartford; and other family members. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose and Margaret and two brothers, Nick and Frank. The family would like to thank Marge Stevens for the care she gave our father (grandfather). Pop will always be in our hearts. A procession will form at the Glastonbury Funeral Home, 450 New London Turnpike, Glastonbury, on Friday, May 26, at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Augustines Church, South Glastonbury, at 10 a.m. Private burial service will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Family and friends may call at the Glastonbury Funeral Home, TODAY, May 25, from 5-8 p.m.

BEAUCHAMP, Deborah (Deschaine)
Deborah (Deschaine) Beauchamp, 34, of Glastonbury died Friday, (April 14, 2000) at home. She was the loving wife of Alfred Beauchamp. Besides her husband she is survived by her three loving children, Justin, Brandon, Cory; her parents, Raymond and Barbara Deschaine of East Hartford; a brother David Deschaine of Hartford. Deborah was a outstanding faithful servant of Jehovah who held onto the hope of the resurrection, down till her last breath. Revelations 21:3 and 4 John 17:3, you are simply the best above all the rest. You will always be my Princess. Love Alfred! Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 16, 6 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, 640 Burnham St., South Windsor. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. GARNEAU, Helen (Omilian)
Helen O. Garneau, 93, formerly of Hartford, died Tuesday, (October 3, 2000) in West Hartford. Born in East Windsor Hill, she is the daughter of the late Alexander and Marcella (Mathus) Omilian. Helen was a retired secretary working for the State of Connecticut, Corporations Division, Secretary of State. Her son, Joseph Garneau of Mission, British Columbia, Canada; and her grandson, Andre survive her. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 7, 11 a.m. in the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 140 Farmington Ave., Hartford, followed by burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Hartford. There are no calling hours. Molloy Funeral Home, West Hartford, is assisting with arrangements. Donations in her memory may be made to your local food bank.

RAGO, Edward "Eddy" Jr.
Edward "Eddy" Rago, Jr., 30, of East Hartford, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday (April 26, 2000). Born in Hartford he had resided in East Hartford for most of his life and had attended East Hartford High School. "Eddy" is survived by his parents, Eddie and Bette (Draugelis) Rago of East Hartford; a son, Jacob Cote of East Hartford; a brother, Tony Rago, and his fiancee, Karen Buck, both of East Hartford; a sister, Missy Rago of South Windsor; paternal grandparents, Sonny Rago and Nellie Novak, both of East Hartford; maternal grandmother, Wanda Draugelis of South Windsor; a nephew and niece, Anthony and Vanessa; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. A memorial service will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at 12 Noon at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Silver Lane Cemetery, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11 a.m.- 12 Noon prior to the service.

GOSSELIN, Paul H.
Paul H. Gosselin, 66, of Canton who resided with his beloved daughter Paula M. Cyr at East Hill Rd., Canton, died at her home Wednesday, (October 4, 2000). Husband of Gertrude (Morrow) Gosselin. Born in Hartford, April 22, 1934, son of the late Joseph H. and Adele (Marcourx) Gosselin. Paul worked for the Farmington Board of Education for the last 21 years, overseeing the plumbing and heating of the Farmington schools. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. These past few months were the happiest time of Paul's life. He felt more love in this short period of time surrounded by his children, family and friends. He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Paula M. and Martin Cyr of Canton and Brenda J. and Wayne Lach of Florida; his three sons, Brian Gosselin of Avon, Peter Gosselin of Florida, and John Gosselin of Simsbury; five sisters, Beatrice Bertrand, Marie Barrieau, Madeleine Kinel, Germaine Bendzinski and Pauline Griffin; six brothers, Leo Gosselin, Maurice Gosselin, Roger Gosselin, Gerard Gosselin, Joseph Gosselin and A. Dennis Gosselin; eight grandchildren, Crystal and Derek Cyr, Juliane and M. Andrew Forster, Helina and Hella Gosselin and Jordan and Michael Gosselin. SPENCER, Dorothy (Weiss)
Dorothy (Weiss) Spencer, 84, of West Main St., Clinton, died Tuesday, (October 3, 2000) at the Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. She is former wife of the late Edward S. Weiss and the late Edwin S. Spencer. Daughter of the late Frederick and Minnie (Simmons) Hurd, born December 13, 1915 in Clinton. She is survived by a son, Edward R. Weiss of Florida; three daughters, Judy Newton and her husband, Thomas of Old Saybrook, Mary Jane Skau of North Carolina, Marjorie Weiss of North Branford; a sister, Gertrude Coroley of Waterford; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, 3 p.m. at the Swan Funeral Home, 80 East Main St., Clinton.

ARENSON, Gertrude (Blum)
Gertrude (Blum) Arenson, 89, of Bloomfield, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, died Tuesday, (October 3, 2000). Born in Brooklyn on May 1, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Bessie Ringhel Blum. She lost her beloved husband, Harry Arenson in 1981. She is survived by her children, Iris Arenson-Fuller and Art Fuller of Bloomfield and Carol and Aaron K. Salmansohn of Lancaster, CA. She leaves grandchildren, Jesse Abbot and Yvonne Espinoza; and great-granddaughter, Tasya Abbot, of West Hartford; grandchildren, Crispin Abbot of Hartford, Benjamin Abbot of East Granby and Helena Abbot Fuller of Bloomfield, David Salmansohn and Melinda Sachs of Brooklyn, NY and from Manalapan, NJ; grandsons, Larry and David Arenson, their wives; and four great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. She was predeceased by a son, Raymond Arenson; a grandson, Richard E. Salmansohn; a son-in-law, Kim Abbot; two brothers, Gerson and Henry Blum; and a sister, Thelma Rosenfeld. Funeral services will be graveside on Thursday, October 5, 1:30 p.m. at the Wellwood Cemetery, Pinelawn, NY. The family will observe a private period of mourning. Donations may be made to Thursday's Child, Inc. Adoption Agency designated for the Gertrude and Harry Arenson Family Builder's Fund, 227 Tunxis Ave., Bloomfield, Ct. 06002. MAZEL, Custant "Cuggy" J.
Custant J. "Cuggy" Mazel, 80, beloved husband of Mary (Fortuna) Mazel of Windsor, died Tuesday, (May 23, 2000) at Hartford Hospital. Born in Poquonock on December 9, 1919, son of the late, Anthony and Grace Mazel, he was a lifelong resident of Windsor. Before retiring in 1982, he was employed at the U.S. Postal Office in Windsor as a carrier for 25 years. Cuggy was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of World War II, was a member of St. Joseph Church, Poquonock and was a past member of St. Casimir's Lithuanian Society of Windsor. He was a past member of the Knight of Columbus of Windsor and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Resides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert A. Mazel and Roger A. Mazel, both of Windsor; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Aldonna Mazel of Windsor; and two nieces, Joan and Cynthia. Family and friends may gather, Friday, 8:15 a.m., at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquonock Ave., Poquonock section of Windsor, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 9 a.m., in St. Joseph Church, Poquonock. Burial will be in Windsor Veteran Memorial Cemetery. His family will receive friends, TODAY, 5-8 p.m., at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home. WILD, Mae E. (Hebebrand)
Mae E. (Hebebrand) Wild, 93, of Windsor, wife of the late Karl E. Wild, died Wednesday, (April 5, 2000), at a local convalescent home. Born in Windsor, daughter of the late Anthony and Elizabeth (Weber) Hebebrand, she was a lifelong resident of Windsor. Prior to her retirement in 1972, Mae was employed by Kaman Aircraft Credit Union. Bloomfield, for 20 years. She was a member of the Windsor Senior Citizens, the Windsor Sportsters, and was a former member of the Windsor Square Dance Club and the Farmington Valley Square Dance Club. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Edmund A. Wild of Windsor, Karl E. and Nancy Wild of Windsor; daughter, Mae Elizabeth Kronengold of Florida; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 8, 1 p.m., in the chapel of the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Windsor. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 443 Franklin Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114.

VIETS, William James
William James Viets, 85, of East Granby, beloved husband for 60 years of Marjorie (Lancaster) Viets, a dedicated farmer and family man, died Thursday, (April 13, 2000) at Hartford Hospital. Born in East Granby, son of the late Leon H. and Grace (Marks) Viets, he was a lifelong resident of East Granby. Bill was a self-employed dairy farmer, owning and operating his own dairy farm, before merging his farm with his father and brothers to form the L.H. Viets & Sons, a Livestock Farm, brokering in horses and cattle. He was a charter member of the East Granby Volunteer Fire Department, a member of St. Mark's Lodge #91 AF&AM of Granby, the American Truck Historical Society Nutmeg Chapter, the Hartford County Farm Bureau, and the East Granby Congregational Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved his farm. Besides his wife Marjorie, he leaves two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Viets; and Peter and Cynthia Viets; two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy "Muffie" Calabrese of Pomfret; and Grace and Chester Stone of Springfield, VT; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Sally Viets; and Leon and Lois Viets, all of East Granby; a sister, Ruth Munsell of Brockton, MA, formerly of Storrs; eight grandchildren, Jody, Timothy, Jamie and Tyler Calabrese, William Viets, II, and Scott, Stephen and Todd Lawley; nine great grandchildren; and his beloved pets, Kasey and Sir Oliver. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 16, 2 p.m. at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby, with the Rev. Alan Buttaro officiating. Burial will be private at the Elmwood Cemetery, East Granby. His family will receive friends Saturday, 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home. KIBBE, Boyd L.
Boyd L. Kibbe, 80, of Ellington, died Wednesday, (January 19, 2000) at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. Born in Ellington, he was the son of the late Fred and Suzie (Schofield) Kibbe and had lived in the area all of his life. He was a retired truck driver with APA Trucking for many years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He leaves a very special friend of many years, Mary Deschampes of Ellington; three nieces, Janet Wieliczka and her husband, William, of Ellington, Elaine Menthe and her husband, Robert, of Vermont, and Norma Stevens and her husband, Alfred, of Florida. He was predeceased by three brothers and a sister. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 22, at 10 a.m. at the Ladd-Turkington Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd. (Rte.83), Vernon, with the Reverend Donald Bailey Francois officiating. Burial will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery with full military honors. Calling hours will be Friday, January 21, 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. WARMSLEY, Gerald
Gerald Warmsley, 72, of Hartford, passed away Monday, (April 3, 2000) at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Thelma Lee Warmsley. The Henry L. Fuqua Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.

SMITH, Dr. J. Eugene
Dr. J. Eugene Smith, former president of Eastern Connecticut State University, died at his home in Windham Center on Thursday (April 20, 2000). Dr. Smith was born in Johnstown, PA, on June 5, 1905, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. James Wilson Smith, but spent most of his early years in Manchester, NH. A graduate of Washington and Jefferson College in Washington , PA, he received a degree in music from Waynesburg (PA) College, and a masters and Ph.D. in American history from Harvard University. Dr. Smith taught high school at Guilford and Willimantic, before taking a teaching position at Willimantic State Teachers College, where he taught from 1937 to 1947. He served as president of the College from 1947 to 1966. A year after his retirement he returned to state service as executive secretary to the Board of Trustees for the four Connecticut State Colleges, a position from which he retired in 1972. He was a life member of several educational and historical associations and was the author of "One Hundred Years of Hartford's Courant" published in 1949. Dr. Smith was a former member of the Willimantic Rotary Club and chairman of the Willimantic Committee for the country's bi-centennial celebration in 1976. An excellent violinist, he enjoyed playing with the former Willimantic Symphony Orchestra in the 1940's and 1950's. Besides his wife, Eva Bogan Smith of Windham Center, whom he married in 1936, he leaves a son, J. Philip Smith of Orange; a daughter, Janet M. Smith of Putnam; and five grandchildren, Andrew and Deborah Smith of New York City, NY, Alyson Aleman of New York City, NY, Alexander Aleman of Florida, and Eric Aleman of Putnam. He also leaves a sister, Helen S. Knowles of Guilford. He was predeceased by a second sister, Geraldine Bowen of West Hartford. A funeral service will be held at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic, on Monday. April 24 at 2 p.m. Calling hours are Monday, 1-2 p.m. Burial, immediately following the funeral service, will be in the Windham Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Connecticut State University Foundation on behalf of the J. Eugene Smith Library or to Windham Center Volunteer Fire Company.
