Mary A. Keene
SUNSET BEACH, N.C. -- Mary Agnes Keene, 78, Sandpiper Drive SW, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at her residence.
Mrs. Keene was born on Nov. 27, 1923, in New York, N.Y. She was a daughter of the late John J. and Mary H. Duffy Kelly. She was a tutor for Union Elementary School and a volunteer with the Brunswick County Literacy Program.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas F. Keene, of 57 years; two sons, Thomas Kevin Keene of Sunset Beach, N.C. and Jonathan Brian Keene of New Milford; one grandson, Adam Lee Keene of Bethel; one sister, Catherine Corleto of Toms River, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass will be celebrated on Friday at the St. Patrick's Church, Yorktown, Heights, N.Y. Burial will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date in St. Brendans Catholic Church, Shallotte, N.C. Brunswick Funeral Service & Crematory, Shallotte, N.C. is in charge of the arrangements.
Elizabeth C. Lee
WALLINGFORD -- Elizabeth C. "Betty" Godo Socha Lee, 91, formerly of Silver Pond Apartments, Center Street, Wallingford, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Regency House of Wallingford. She was the wife of the late James Edward Lee.
Born in Wallingford, June 16, 1911, a daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Godo, she was a lifelong resident here. She had been employed by the Feldman Dress Co. in Wallingford for many years, and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jane B. (Mrs. Richard L.) Socha of Wallingford; four grandchildren, Diana M. St. Pierre and her husband, James St. Pierre of Durham, and Richard J. Socha and his wife, Christine Socha, Kathryn A. Sabo and her husband, Philip Sabo, and Maureen R. Cruz and her husband, Frederick Cruz, all of Wallingford; 14 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary (Mrs. Clifford) Schumacher of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Richard L. Socha; two sisters, Vera Straub and Ann Matheson; and a brother, John Godo.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Thursday from 8:45 a.m. until 9:45 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in In Memoriam Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to MidState VNA and Hospice, 685 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450.
Emilie E. Leone
SOUTHINGTON -- Emilie E. (Huck) Leone of Southington and formerly of Stratford, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Southington Care Center.
Born on April 19, 1923 in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Ethel (Wilmot) Huck. She was the wife of Paul Leone Sr. Emilie and was the owner of Leone Ceramics Studio in Plantsville for over 15 years. She taught ceramics at the Girls Club in Meriden for over 12 years. She has been a Southington resident and parishioner of Mary Our Queen Church for over 40 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan and son-in-law, James Kendi of Southington; a son, John and daughter-in-law, Geraldine Leone of Strafford Springs; a son, Paul Leone of New Britain; and a grandson, Michael Leone and his wife, Kimberly.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 10:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to Mary Our Queen Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Dominic P. Mongillo
SOUTHINGTON -- Dominic P. Mongillo, 81, of 25 Old Turnpike Road, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Priscilla "Pat" (Zumbolo) Mongillo for 60 years.
Born in Southington on Aug. 21, 1921, the son of the late John and Maria (Castaldi) Mongillo, he attended local schools and was a U.S. Army-Air Force veteran of World War II, serving with the 807th Air Operations in the European Campaign. Dom owned and operated Dom's Landscaping Service from 1949 to 1972, and in 1973 he became the Superintendent of Southington Parks until his retirement in 1985. Under his direction as Park Superintendent, the upper and lower soccer fields and two Babe Ruth fields at the Recreation Park were established. In addition he helped establish Girls Softball fields at Panthorn Trails which laid the ground work for the expansion of which is now called Panthorne Park. Dom also donated his personal time to help at both the Western and Northern Little Leagues. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Sons of Italy and he was a charter member of the Gang Scarpa Shoda. Dom enjoyed life, family, friends and music. He was often referred to as "Dino" because of his likeness and ability to sing like Dean Martin. He freely gave of his talents to entertain people at many and various functions with his good friends, Joe Casale, John Nardi, and the late Don Panella. They were called "The Singing Troubadours".
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Mark and daughter-in-law, Patricia Mongillo of Southington; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Al and Mary Mongillo of Bristol, John and Sylvia Mongillo of Southington; his cherished brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Al and Emma Nelli, and Tom and Mel Zumbolo; his loving grandchildren, Dominic and his wife, Marney Mongillo, Kimberly and her husband, Philip Limbacher, Mark Mongillo and Todd Mongillo; three cherished great-grandchildren, Abrianne, Matthew and Dominic; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Dominick J. Mongillo; brothers Pat, Ben, Greg, Larry and Fred; sisters Pasqualina Mongillo, Mary Schivone and Louise Palmieri.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial with military honors will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of Central CT, P.O. Flora E. Salvatore
MERIDEN -- Flora E. Salvatore, 89, formerly of 80 Hanover St., died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at the Westfield Care & Rehab Center.
Born in Cheshire, Oct. 9, 1212, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Maria Marena Salvatore. Mrs. Salvatore resided in the Cheshire and Meriden area her entire life having retired from the Ball and Socket Co. of Cheshire. She was an active member of the Meriden Senior Center.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Linda DeIulio Sireno of Meriden; and a brother, Michael Salvatore of Cheshire; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas A. DeIulio; a sister, Angelina Salvatore; and three brothers, Samuel, George and James Salvatore.
A memorial Mass will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home.
Florence Bellemare (Kalmick)
MERIDEN -- Florence Ann Bellemare (Kalmick), 73, of the Village at Kensington Place, formerly of Blackstone Village, died Tuesday morning, September 3, 2002, after a lengthy illness. Born in Meriden on June 19, 1929, the daughter of the late Robert S. and Florence Norton Kidder, she had resided in Meriden most of her life. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Meriden High School, Class of 1947. Ms. Bellemare was retired from the State of CT, Department of Motor Vehicles. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church and a member of the "Golden K" (Kiwanis), an active member of the Meriden Senior Citizens' Center, a volunteer at the Battered Women's Shelter, and a former member of the DAV.
She is survived by her daughter: Candace Lee Kalmick of Southington; her son and daughter-in-law: Wayne R. and Betty Kalmick of South Meriden; and grandchildren: Melissa Kalmick, Michael Kalmick, and Matthew Kalmick; a great-granddaughter: Nicole, a sister and brother-in-law: Marylou and Bernard Hilmes of Rockville, Maryland, and also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother: Robert Kidder of Meriden; and a sister: Helen Valenti of Meriden.
The funeral will be held on Friday, September 6, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery
at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Walter T. Burns
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Walter T. Burns, 72, formerly of Wallingford and Meriden, passed on Aug. 7, 2002, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. where he resided for several years.
The beloved husband of Nancy Burns, he is also survived by a daughter, Dr. Debra Burns and four step-daughters, Susan Lord, Carolyn Gibson and Mary Ellen (Emmy) Riccio, all of CT and Cathy Gibson of MA. Mr. Burns will also be fondly remembered by eight step-grandchildren and many special friends.
He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, was a mason and member of the Shrine in Newington. He owned the Phipps and Burns Insurance Agency in Meriden for several years prior to his retiring to Florida where he was a member of the Coral Baptist Church, Coral Springs, FL. Mr. Burns was a charter member of the Farms Country Club of Wallingford and also a former member of Indian Hill Country Club in Newington.
Services were conducted in Florida by devoted friend, Pastor Hershal Creasman.
Donations may be made in memory of Mr. Burns to the Shriners Children Hospital, Sphinx Shriners, 3066 Berlin Turnpike, Newington, CT.
Marie A. Johnson
BERLIN -- Marie A. Johnson, 81, of Webster Ridge in Berlin, died Saturday, (Aug. 31, 2002) at Ledgecrest Health Care Center in Kensington. Born in Meriden, she has been a resident of Berlin for the past 50 years. Marie graduated from Meriden High School in 1938 and then graduated from the Middlesex Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed at Hartford Hospital as a RN for over 40 years until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of Berlin Congregational Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen Flemming and her husband William of Manchester, and Nancy Johnson of New Britain; a sister, Barbara "Bobbie" Bober of Cheshire; 3 grandchildren, Robin Coccomo, and Brian and Michael Flemming; and a great-grandson, Paul Coccomo.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) 10 a.m. at the Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square in New Britain. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery
in Meriden. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., Wallingford, CT 06492.
Newall Edward Learned
MERIDEN -- Newall Edward Learned, 75, of 130 Dogwood Lane, husband of Enid Church Learned, died on Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Meriden on April 14, 1927, the son of the late Kenneth and Ellen Hall Learned, he had resided in Meriden all his life and graduated from Meriden High School. Mr. Learned was employed for 45 years by International Silver of Meriden, Times Fiber of Wallingford, and Amphenol of Wallingford, retiring six years ago. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and a member of several organizations including Elks Club #35, Masonic Temple Lodge #97, American Legion Post #45, and Silver City Golf.
Besides his wife, Enid, he is survived by three daughters: Megan Monroe and her husband, Brendt, Randi Learned, and Kelli Ferrick and her husband, Richard, all of Florida; two sons: Scott Learned and his wife, Kathy, of Torrington, and Kevin Learned and his fiancee, Melinda, of Cromwell; seven grandchildren: Portia, Caitlin, Erin, Michael, Kylie, Tyler, and Amanda; one sister: Barbara Maloney and her husband, Lester, of Meriden; also two nieces: Diane and Sharon. He was predeceased by one son, Corey, and one daughter, Robin.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002 at 8 p.m. in the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, with Rev. Anne Jensen officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
