Harry Soll
Hallandale, Fla. --Harry Soll, 88, of Hallandale, Fla., husband of Henrietta (Warmund) Soll, died Tuesday, Sept. 3rd in Aventura, Fla. Born in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Moritz and Clara (Hershkowitz) Solomowitz. Mr. Soll had lived in Brooklyn, NY, and Meriden, moving to Hallandale 30 years ago. He was the founder and president of a glass bending and decorating factory in Wallingford; and was a member of the Hallandale Jewish Center.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Robert Soll of Rocky Hill; one daughter, Elaine "Penny" Bersch of Wallingford, and her husband Myron; two brothers, Sidney Solomowitz of FL, and Herbert Solomowitz of Brooklyn, NY; three sisters, Fay Nadel of Brooklyn, NY, Beaterice Schwartz and Rose Roshfeld, both of FL; 6 grandchildren, Mark and Mary Soll, Caryn Soll, Renee and Richard Paley, David and Alicia Bersch, Robin and Chuck Gold, Richard Bersch, and Amy Selig; and nine great-grandchildren, Ashley, Rachel, Jason, Steven, Kevin, Shaun, Eric, Cecelia, and Leo.
Funeral services will be held at Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, 48 Old Church St., Middletown, Friday, Sept. 6th at 10:00 a.m. Rabbi Seth Riemer will officiate and interment will be in Adath Israel Cemetery, Middletown.
Doolittle Funeral Service, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, is in charge of arrangements.
Michael Alfano
SOUTHINGTON -- Michael Alfano, 50, of Hitching Post Drive, Southington, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Southington Care Center following a long courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of 27 years of Denise Downey Alfano.
Born Nov. 12, 1951, in New Rochelle, NY, Michael had been a Southington resident for the past 21 years. He was a sales rep for Josten's Printing and Publishing for more than 20 years and a member of the First Congregational Church. He was also an avid golfer.
In addition to his wife, Denise, Michael is survived by his two beloved daughters, Kristina and Carina Alfano of Southington; his parents, Michael and Ana Frenda Alfano of Antioch, CA; four sisters, Connie, JoAnn, Nancy and Lisa; and his beloved father-in-law, Robert C. Downey of Ohio.
Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. A memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the First Congregational Church, 37 Main St., Southington.
Clifford L. Aspinall
WATERBURY -- Clifford Leonard Aspinall, 77, of Waterbury, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the husband of Julia (Healy) Aspinall.
Mr. Aspinall was born Jan. 29, 1925, son of the late Clifford W. and Marion (Molasky) Aspinall. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School in Waterbury. He was the fire chief of Scovill Manufacturing, and also worked as a fire inspector for Insurance Services Offices before his retirement. He then drove a school bus for Ryder Transportation in Cheshire and Waterbury.
He was a member of New Haven County Fire Chiefs Association, past president of the Connecticut Fifers and Drummers Association, past assistant director of the Prospect Drum Corps, past assistant director of the CT Yankee Drum Corps, past co-director of the Thomaston Drum Corps, a judge for the CT Fifers and Drummers Association and an inductee to the Drum Corps Hall of Fame. He was a past member of the East End Community Drum Corps and a member of St. Peter's Drum Corps of Torrington. He was a charter member of REMCO and was a retired lieutenant of the Waterbury Auxiliary Police. He gave blood every three months for 63 years, donating 27 gallons in his lifetime. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Church, and served as an usher and collector.
Besides his wife of 56 years, he leaves four daughters, Sally Creagh of East Greenwich, RI, Ellen DeFelippi of West Minister, MA, Molly Carr of Milldale, CT, and Polly Czepiel of Newburg, NY; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, as well as two sons-in-law, Benjamin Carr and Lewis DeFelippi. He was predeceased by an infant son, Clifford Michael, and a sister, Bernice Boyd.
Funeral will leave the Kelly-Brennan Funeral Home, 768 Baldwin St., at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, for St. St. Leo the Great Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Old Calvary Cemetery. Miguel Cruz Jr.
MERIDEN -- Miguel Angel Cruz Jr., infant son of Miguel A. Cruz Sr. and Sharon L. Spisak, born on Aug. 26, 2002, went to be one of God's little angels on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at UConn Health Center in Farmington. A complete obituary will run in the Sunday edition of the Record-Journal. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Grace Ordasz
MERIDEN -- Grace Uznanski Ordasz, of Meriden, wife of the late Walter F. (Artie Ardas) Ordasz, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Ordasz was born in Meriden, the daughter of the late Simon and Caroline Uznanski. She was education in Meriden schools and was a lifelong resident of Meriden. She was employed by the New Departure Hyatt division of General Motors for 41 years, retiring in 1965. Mrs. Ordasz was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church and was very active in church and community affairs. She enjoyed many years of part-time residency at the family home in Old Saybrook.
Mrs. Ordasz leaves two brothers-in-law, Thaddeus Mucik of Meriden and Matthew Ardas of Wallingford; a sister-in-law, Stephanie David of Southington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in St. Stanislaus Church, followed by burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass Saturday at the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden.
Lauretta Tortorici
NEWINGTON -- Lauretta Tortorici, 86, of Church Street, Newington, wife of the late Jean Tortorici, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, with her family by her side at Medi-plex of Newington.
She was born Feb. 5, 1916, in Canada, a daughter of the late Archille and Elyza (Dehiens) Champagne.
She is survived by one son, Robert Metayer of Idaho; two daughters, Jackie and John Fletcher of Idaho, and Patricia and Richard Nizel of Tennessee; one sister, Lucienne McMillian of Colchester, CT.
A private funeral service and burial will take place. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden, has been entrusted with assisting the family.
Gerald P. Freeman
WALLINGFORD -- Gerald Paul Freeman, 78, of 34 Elm Hill Drive, Wallingford, husband of the late Barbara Catherine Sappier Freeman, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Maple View Manor in Rocky Hill, CT.
Born March 13, 1924, in Eagle Lake, Maine, he was the son of the late Levi and Julia Martin Freeman. He attended schools in Maine and was a World War II naval veteran serving in the 69th construction battalion (Seabees). He was employed by Allegheny Ludlum Corporation of Wallingford for more than 25 years, retiring in 1985 as foreman of their shipping department. He was a member of the Meriden-Wallingford Chapter No. 6 of Disabled American Veterans, an accomplished woodworker and an avid reader. He enjoyed singing and was a former member of the chorus at St. Joseph's Church where he had been a parishioner.
He leaves two daughters, Priscilla A. Freeman of Southington, and Annette Freeman of Wallingford, "We love you Dad. You will be greatly missed." Also, he is survived by a brother, Franklin Freeman of Florida; a sister, Geraldine Losier of Portland, ME; and two grandchildren, Michael A. Zaborowski of Southington and Daniel W. Zaborowski Jr. of New Britain. He was predeceased by three brothers, George Freeman, Earl Freeman and Harold Freeman, and a sister, Betty Radecker.
His military funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at the funeral home. The family requests that donations in Mr. Freeman's memory be made to the DAV Meriden-Wallingford Chapter No. 6, 80 Hall Ave., Meriden, CT 06450, or the American Lung Association of CT Inc., 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT.
Miguel A. Cruz Jr.
MERIDEN -- Miguel Angel Cruz Jr., of 340 Center St., infant baby of Miguel A. Cruz Sr. and Sharon L. Spisak, died Wednesday, Sept. 4th at UConn Medical Center in Farmington. He was born Aug. 26, 2002, in Farmington.
Besides his parents of Meriden, he is survived by five brothers, Francisco Chaparro Jr., Steven Joseph Chaparro and Anthony Nicholas Rosa, all of Meriden, Juan Miguel Cruz and Jiobany Cruz, both of Jayuya, Puerto Rico. He is also survived by his paternal grandfather, Jesus "Kito" Cruz-Torres of Jayuya, Puerto Rico; and maternal grandmother, Marsh Ann Spisak of Meriden. He was predeceased by paternal grandmother, Gloria Estell Ramirez; and maternal grandfather, Steve J. Spisak.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place Tuesday, Sept. 10, at St. Stanislaus Church at 10 a.m., with Rev. Edmund S. Nadolny officiating. Burial to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 East Main St., Meriden on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Carl R. Pratt
SOUTHINGTON -- Carl R. Pratt, 81, of Brandon, Fla., and formerly of Wallingford, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Jannette (Witham) Pratt.
Born in Mechanic Falls, Maine on June 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Carl Franze and Nellie (Snow) Pratt. He was employed by the Stanley Drapery Hardware Co. of Wallingford. He was in the U.S. Army Air Force serving in World War II.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving family, son, John I. Pratt of Mesquite Texas ; daughters, Carline Yeager of Prospect and Cynthia Carnes of Brandon, Fla.; a sister, Alice Twitchell of Oxford, Maine; grandchildren; Steven Pratt of Windsor, Michael Pratt of Waterbury, Jeffrey Pratt of New Britain, R. J. Yeager of Waterbury, Timothy Yeager of Prospect, and Jason Carnes and Brittany Carnes, both of Brandon, Fla.; four great-granddaughters; along with several nieces and nephews.
