Mary Ellen Farnam

WALLINGFORD -- Mary Ellen (Nancy) Forgan Farnam, 85, of 29 Ashlar Village, formerly of Whirlwind Hill Rd., Wallingford and Vero Beach, Fla., died Sunday. Sept. 22, 2002, at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was the wife of the late George B. Farnam.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., June 12, 1917, a daughter of the late James B. and Margaret Louise Meeker Forgan. Mrs. Farnam was a graduate of Bennington College, class of 1939. She was an accomplished artist and was a founding member of the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven. She was a 4-H club leader in Wallingford for 25 years, was active in the A.A.U.W., and served as president of the Board of Directors for Leila Day Nursery in New Haven.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Robert Charles of Wallingford, Rosalind Dudden and Jim Mills of Denver, Colo. and Margot and John McKnight of DeLand, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, George B. and Sophie Farnam of Charlotte, N.C. and James B. Farnam and Marcy Stovall of New Haven; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Farnam.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 65 North Main St., Wallingford. Burial will follow at the In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. There are no calling hours. If friends so desire, gifts in her memory may be made to Ashlar Village Grants and Aid, P.O. Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492, or the Creative Arts Workshop, 80 Audubon St., New Haven, CT 06510. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm Street is in charge of arrangements.

Peter A. Bernier

MERIDEN -- Peter Andre' Bernier, 36, of 48 Harrington St., Meriden, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born in Meriden on March 3, 1966, the son Bibianne Nadeau Bernier of Wallingford and of the late Joseph A. Bernier, he was a 1984 graduate of Wilcox Tech. Mr. Bernier was employed by Micko Mfg. of Wallingford. An avid car, snowmobile and motorcycle enthusiast, beloved son, brother and uncle, he loved to make us all smile and laugh with is witty humor, and he will be sorely missed.

Besides his mother, he is survived by two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Michelle and Jeff Lessard of New York, Paul and Phyllis Bernier of Meriden, Philip and Betty Bernier of Tennessee and Celine and Richard L'Heureux of Wallingford; a much beloved aunt, Ann Keithan of Meriden; his godmother, Marie Donahue of Enfield; 12 nieces and nephews; one grand-nephew; and his many, many close friends, especially Craig Bergeron.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at St. Laurent Church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Red Cross, 209 Farmington Ave., Farmington, CT 06032 or to the American Diabetes Assoc., 300 Research Pkwy., Meriden, CT 06450.

Brenda Cannatelli

SOUTHINGTON -- Brenda Cleveland Cannatelli, 63, of Southington, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at MidState Medical Center surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was the wife of Anthony Cannatelli Sr.

Born Dec. 30, 1938 in Hyde Park, Vt., daughter of the late Perley and Mabel Manning Cleveland, she had been a Southington resident for the past 35 years. Mrs. Cannatelli worked as a nurses' aide at Olympus Health Care in Meriden before retiring in 1994.

In addition to her dedicated husband, Anthony, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Nancy Cannatelli of Southington; her daughters, Debbie Wharton of Florida, Theresa Mercier of Southington, Heidi Schneider and her husband, David of Southington; her step-daughter, Deanna Cannatelli of Meriden; three brothers, Keith Cleveland of Florida, James Cleveland of Vermont and Douglas Cleveland of Southington; three sisters, Margaret Ercoloni of Southington, Dorothy Ercoloni of Florida and Becky Binkowski of Meriden; seven grandchildren, Stephen Mercier, Kristen Wharton, Christopher Bower, Thomas Regan, Amber, Meghan and Sarah Schneider; a special niece, Sandy Binkowski; and many nieces and nephews. Brenda was predeceased by seven brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at Mary Our Queen Church. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Cannatelli's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450-1004.

Richard G. Hubbard Jr.

WALLINGFORD -- Richard G. Hubbard Jr., 85, of Wallingford, formerly of Manchester and Charlestown, R.I., died peacefully on Sept. 22, 2002, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born the son of the late Richard G. Hubbard Sr. and Amy Dahlstrom Hubbard in New Britain on July 29, 1917. He was predeceased by his brother, Raymond C. Hubbard. He grew up in Southington, where he graduated from Lewis High School. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was a chief radio operator for the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950. He was employed as an electrical engineer for the Hamilton Standard for nearly 25 years before retiring to Rhode Island in 1983. He was a co-inventor and patent holder of a color-scanning device for the U.S. Government. He was a member of the Masons for over 50 years. He was an active member of his church.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet E. Atwater Hubbard and their two children, Susan E. Hubbard of Killingworth and David R. Hubbard of Bolton.

A private memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, in Wallingford. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford.

Marie T. Lukasik

LAKE MARY, Fla. -- Marie Therese (Golab) Lukasik, 88, of Lake Mary, Fla., wife of the late Frank S. Lukasik, was called home by our Lord on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 at South Seminole Hospital in Longwood, Fla.

She was born in Chester, the daughter of the late Martin and Madgelena (Pula) Golab. Prior to her retirement, she was a nurse and co-proprietor with her late husband of Twin Maples Convalescent Home in Durham.

She was the loving mother of four daughters, Patricia Lukasik of Lake Mary, Fla., Regina Haglund and her husband, James of Durham, Sylvia Sheftel and her husband, Barry of Wallingford and Cecilia Adams and her husband, John of Middletown; two sons, George Lukasik and his wife, Lynn of Longwood, Fla., and Robert Lukasik and his wife, Joanne of Cromwell; two brothers, Peter Golab of Willimantic and Joseph Golab of New Hampshire; two sisters, Elizabeth Northam of Moodus and Claire Yantosh of Middletown; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Dorothy Lukasik; two sons, Edward and Frank Lukasik; one brother, John Golab; and two sisters, Rita Blakely and Sister Mary Beata.

Funeral services will be held Thursday from the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown at 9 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. funeral liturgy at SS. Peter and Paul Church, 139 North Orchard, Wallingford. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Middletown. Friends may call at the Biega Funeral Home, Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

James W. Perkins

SOUTHINGTON -- James W. Perkins, 47, of Meriden Waterbury Road, in the Marion section of Southington died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at Bristol Hospital.

Born Sept. 15, 1955, a son of Florence Angelone Perkins and the late Robert Perkins, he had been a longtime Southington resident. Mr. Perkins was a self-employed salesman and a lifetime member of the Plantsville Congregational Church.

Besides his mother, Florence, he is survived by his three sisters and their husbands, Corinne and Richard Kiewlen of Meriden, Phyllis and Tony Califano of Southington and Bobbie and Stephen Biggs of Plantsville; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his cousin, Darlene Falconeri; and his nephew, Jonathan Biggs.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in South End Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Avis Sharp

MERIDEN -- Avis (Mitchell) Sharp, wife of the late Thomas E. Sharp, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 at Westfield Care and Rehab Center.

Born in Merrill, Maine, on July 17, 1919, she was the daughter of the late George and Rosie Mitchell. Mrs. Sharp was an active member of the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church for many years, and was retired from Dominel Press.

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Frank (Idella) Lashway of Alton, Mo., Mrs. Ernest (Patsy) Craney of Randolph, Vt., and Mavis S. Gillespie of Meriden, with whom she resided; her sister, Sonja Corliss of Columbia, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons. She was predeceased by a son, Albert G. Sharp; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. at the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church, 145 Main St., So. Meriden, with Rev. Susan DeSousa officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church.

Nora D. Sorber

WALLINGFORD -- Nora D. Wall Sorber, 70, of Crestwood Drive, Felton, Del., formerly of Center St., Wallingford, passed peacefully in her home on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002. She was the beloved and dedicated military wife of Mason C. Sorber, Jr. (Army, ret).

Born in Marion, N.C., May 5, 1932, she was a daughter of the late John and Nettie Sartain Wall and had been a Wallingford resident for 13 years until moving to Delaware 12 years ago. Nora was a ceramics teacher and crafter in Wallingford, and in recent years discovered her skills and love of oil painting. She was a gentle, caring woman, and a throat cancer survivor.

Besides her beloved husband, Mason, she is survived by her nine children, Clyde K. Sorber and Mason C. Sorber III of Branford, John J. Sorber of Camdenton, Mo., Tracy Ouellette, of Durham, Robin H. Sorber, Russell A. Sorber and Carol D. Masse, all of Meriden, Pamela R. Willard of Wallingford and James M. Sorber of Wingate, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters, her twin sister, Dora Jones, Pearl Hunter, Bonnie Christopher, and Mary Kate Wall; her two brothers, Edgar and Carl Wall.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Wallingford Funeral Home. Interment will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery in Wallingford.

Denis Alfano

SOUTHINGTON -- Denise Downy Alfano of Southington died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 at New Britain General Hospital. She was 51.

Born in Wilmington, Del., Aug. 30, 1951, daughter of Robert C. Downey and the late Jane S. Downey, she had been a Southington resident for the past 21 years. She worked as a medical secretary in San Francisco and New Britain and as a legal secretary in Hartford. She last worked for her husband who owned his own business with Jostens Printing and Publishing. She did volunteer work for the public schools and her former church. Denise was currently a member of the First Congregational Church of Southington.

Denise is survived by her two daughters, Kris and Carina of Southington; her father, Robert C. Downey of Circleville, Ohio; a brother, Robert C. Downey Jr., also of Circleville, Ohio; two sisters, Debbie Newsome of Worthington, Ohio and Barbara Owens of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; three nieces; three nephews; and one grand niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Alfano.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Southington. In lieu of flowers, Denise requested that donations in her memory please be made to Hope Lodge, c/o American Cancer Society, 636 West Lexington St., Baltimore, Md 21201. Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville has been entrusted with arrangements.
