Rita Kelley
WEST HARTFORD -- Rita (Deegan) Kelley, 87, of Homestead Ave., Waterbury, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 at the St. Mary Home after an extended illness. She was the widow of James J. Kelley.
Mrs. Kelley was born in Naugatuck, on Aug. 20, 1915, daughter of the late Elmer and Mary (Conran) Deegan. She attended local schools and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She was a retired office manager for the accounting firm of Zooker, Pacowta & Kravitz. Mrs. Kelley was a past member of Women of Waterbury and a founder of the Saints Peter & Paul Madonna Guild, where she was a communicant.
Mrs. Kelley is survived by a son, Brian Kelley of Vienna, Va.; and two daughters, Pamela Baim and Marylou Raider, both of Southington; also by a brother, Joseph Deegan of Cheshire; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kelley will be held on Monday, Oct. 7, at 9:30 a.m. at the Casey O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main St., Waterbury to Saints Peter and Paul Church, 67 Southmayd Road for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donald E. Winkel
MERIDEN -- Donald E. Winkel, 84, of 545 So. Curtis St., died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 in Chicago, Ill. He was the husband of the late Frances Hayes Winkel.
Born in Meriden on May 29, 1918, he was the son of the late Ernest A. and Catherine Flagg Winkel and was employed as a tool maker at New Departure. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Club.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Gary Fredericks of Middletown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sherwood W. and Dorothy Winkel of Chicago, Ill., David H. and Doreen Winkel of Middletown; five grandchildren, Debra Winkel Burns and Karin Winkel Wethington, both of Illinois and Justin Winkel, Jessica Winkel and Alison Winkel Fredericks, all of Middletown; five great-grandchildren; and a beloved friend, Lois Bradley, formerly of Meriden and now of Largo, Fla. He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Frances Winkel Purcell, Norris Winkel and Wayne Winkel.
The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry L. Beaver and the Rev. Maureen Hawksley will officiate. Burial will be private in Center Cemetery

Mary C. Zajac
MERIDEN -- Mary C. Zajac, 79, formerly of 405 Crown St., Meriden, wife of the late Joseph W. Zajac, died on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at the Regency House in Wallingford.
Born in Wethersfield on Oct. 3, 1923, the daughter of the late Stanley and Josephine (Szrom) Opalacz, she resided in Meriden most of her life and was educated in Wethersfield schools. Mrs. Zajac was employed by International Silver Company for many years and was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. In her early years, Mary won several trophies as a member of the Women's Silver City Golf League. She was also an avid bowler in the Meriden area. In her later years she enjoyed working outdoors in her yard.
She is survived by one son, Joseph L. Zajac of Meriden; and by her longtime companion, a cat named "Patches;" three sisters, Josephine Dorunda of Enfield, Anna Blasko of Manchester and Florence Prazyniski of Bristol; one brother, Raymond Opalacz of Wethersfield; also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Zajac; four brothers, Anthony, Benjamin, Frank and Charles; and three sisters, Stella, Alice and Frances.
The funeral will be held on Monday, Oct. 7, at 8:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 9 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. the family would like to thank her home caregivers: Paul and Helen, Cindy, Denise, Viletta, Sally, Wanda and Karen for their help and concern.
Walter E. Brunetti
WALLINGFORD -- Walter E. Brunetti, 78, formerly of Vaz Place, Wallingford, died Sept. 30, 2002, at the Villages Regional Medical Center in Lady Lake, Fla. He was the beloved husband of Claire Brunetti and the late Mary Selvaggi Brunetti, and the father of Alice Brunetti-Saier.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Yalesville, Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery
in Wallingford. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to The Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405. Thomas F. Cruess
CHESHIRE -- Thomas F. Cruess, 80, of 1811 Old Waterbury Road, husband of Eleanor C. (Matthews) Cruess, died Friday evening at his home.
Mr. Cruess was born in Waterbury, Jan. 5, 1922, a son of the late Raymond H. and Charlotte (Moran) Cruess and was a graduate of Crosby High School where he was active in athletics as a member of the varsity football team. He was chosen as a member of the first All City Waterbury Football Team in 1939. He was a graduate of Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vt., where he continued his interest in athletics. He was a medallist for several years on the collegiate Football team, was a member of the Handball team and a member and captain of the college baseball team. He was also president of the Blue Key Athletic Honors Society. He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a Sergeant in the European Theater of Operations and was awarded combat medals for the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a former employee of the Waterbury Steel Ball Co, where he served as a Production Engineer and Engineering Supervisor for the New Britain Plastic Machine Co., a division of Litton Industries. He was a founding member of the Church of the Epiphany in Cheshire and had served for several years as a member of the parish council. He was an active member of the parish Men's Club.
Besides his wife of 54 years, he leaves two sons, Thomas M. Cruess and Capt. Michael J. Cruess of the Cheshire Police Dept., both of Cheshire; one daughter, Eleanor "Noree" Howlett of Chester, Mass.; two brothers, Raymond Cruess and Deacon Donald Cruess, both of Waterbury; one sister, Florence Eustace of Waterbury; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main St., Cheshire, to the Church of the Epiphany for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Edward A. Kozak
MERIDEN -- Edward A. Kozak, 88, husband of Wanda Muszynski Kozak of Green Road, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home.
Born in Meriden, Jan. 6, 1914, a son of the late John L. and Mary Marosz Kozak. Edward was a lifelong resident of Meriden; he was educated in local schools and was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. He was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 25 years, retiring in 1979.
Besides his wife, Wanda, he leaves a brother, Theodore Kozak of Meriden; and two sisters, Wanda Mik and Helen DeMichele, both of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne Kozak.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 9:15 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Pasquale Nappi
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Pasquale "Pat" Nappi, 77, formerly of Danbury, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, in North Providence, R.I.
He was formerly the Superintendent of Danbury schools and a former Assistant Superintendent of Meriden schools.
He was the beloved husband of Ann (Tortolano) Nappi; father of Maria McKeon and the late Michael J. Nappi; brother of Fred Nappi. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 8 a.m. from the A. A. Mariani & Son Funeral Home, 200 Hawkins St., Providence, R.I., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 1413 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence. Calling hours are Monday at 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Stroke Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688 will be appreciated.
Evelyn Petruzzio
WALLINGFORD -- Evelyn Helbig Petruzzio, 83, of Schoolhouse Road, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the Skyview Center in Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Anthony Petruzzio.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., May 1, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mabel Goedec Helbig. She had been a Wallingford resident for the past 20 years and had been a member of the Wallingford Senior Center.
She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Caroline and William Dzubiak, with whom she resided with in Wallingford, and Evelyn and Ray Hazen of Brunswick, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Carol Ann Vass, Susan Dzubiak, Helen Orientale, Karen Orientale, Eugene Orientale, John Palumbo and Melissa Palumbo; 17 great-grandchildren, including, Tracey Dzubiak, Melinda Fuller and Rebecca Vass. She is also survived by several brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Sunday, Oct. 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. A committal service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. in In Memoriam Cemetery
in Wallingford.
Francis J. Salka
MERIDEN -- Francis J. Salka, beloved husband of Ruth Hartlein Salka for almost 60 years, of 351 Parker Avenue South, passed away on Oct. 4, 2002, after a long illness with his family by his side.
Mr. Salka was born in Meriden on Feb. 16, 1922, the son of the late Henry and Stella Frederick Salka, and lived here all his life. He was a graduate of St. Rose of Lima School and Meriden High School. Mr. Salka served his country in the United States Army during World War II and returned to Meriden to raise his family. He was employed at New Departure/Hyatt Bearing for over 20 years prior to his retirement in 1982. He was an avid golfer and spent many of his days in retirement out on the golf course. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Salka is survived by four sons; two daughters and their spouses, Francis and Christa Salka of Huntsville, Ala., Carol and William DeSantis of Meriden, Barbara and Joseph Corbin of Cheshire, Thomas and Karen Salka of West Chazy, N.Y., Stephen and Niki Salka of Ayer, Mass.; and James and Shirley Salka of Japan. He is also survived by two sisters, Rosemary Psoter of Meriden and Lorna Orsini of Wallingford; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Edward; his brothers, Raymond and Valentine; and his sister, Dorothy.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, Oct. 8th from 5 to 8 p.m.
