Philip F. Sylvia

WALLINGFORD -- Philip Francis Sylvia, 69, of Yale Avenue, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the Coccomo Memorial Health Care Center in Meriden. He was the husband of the late Beverly Norkus Sylvia.

Born in Belfast, Maine, Jan. 27, 1933, he had been a member of the Wallingford Taxpayers Club and The Barnacles Scuba Diving Club.

He is survived by his mother, Edna Berry Green of Coopers Mills, Maine; his three daughters, Nancy E. Uhlman of Meriden, Susan E. Sylvia and Kimberly E. Cucurello, both of Wallingford; two sons, David J. Sylvia of Wallingford and Russell P. Sylvia of Swanville, Maine; a sister, Lucille Maddocks of Lincolnville, Maine; a sister-in-law, Lois E. Sabo of Cheshire; a brother, Lawrence Foss of Florida; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Darlene P. Priesler.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. in Branford Bible Chapel, 212 Branford Road (Route 139), North Branford. Interment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext.

Gerhard Voelkl

MERIDEN -- Gerhard "Jerry" Voelkl, 57, of South Meriden, husband of Judy Voelkl, died suddenly on Friday evening, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home with his family.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on March 6, 1945, the son of the late Karl and Anna Skeeber Voelkl, he had been a resident of Meriden for the past 30 years. Mr. Voelkl, was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Co. (North Haven) in the Powerhouse for the past 35 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the U.S. Navy.

Besides his wife, Judy, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christina Louise and Michael Witham of Manchester; a son and daughter-in-law, Ernest F. and Cheryl L. Voelkl of Meriden; three grandchildren, Rebecca L. Voelkl, Karla M. Witham and Frank D. Witham; a sister, Annelise Ignace of Derby; also several nephews.

The funeral and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, on Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, 8605 Cameron St., Suite 400, Silver Spring, Md. 20910.

Michael P. Carroll

MERIDEN -- Michael P. Carroll, 37, of 1012 Old Colony Road, husband of Debbie Dean Carroll, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002.

Born in Fort Kent, Maine, on July 29, 1965, he was the son of Leona Boutat Carroll of New Brunswick, Canada, and the late William Carroll. Michael had attended schools in Canada and had resided in Meriden for the past seven years. Michael enjoyed spending time on the Ham radio

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by three daughters, Amber French, Jocelyn Carroll, and Shantalee Carroll; and by three sons, Gene French, Shane French, and Michael Patrick Carroll Jr. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Patricia and Perry Dean Jr.; and several uncles, nieces, nephews, and loving friends.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Leonard C. Erardi

MERIDEN -- Leonard C. Erardi, 89, of 1156 E. Main St., husband of the late Dora Petrucelli Erardi, died peacefully at home, Sat., Oct. 5, 2002. He was predeceased by his loving first wife, Louise DelFavero Erardi.

Born in Meriden, Jan. 4, 1913, he was the son of the late Frank Erardi Sr. and Anna Touche Erardi. Mr. Erardi was a lifelong Meriden resident having attended St. Rose School and graduated from W. Haven High. He also attended Business College. Mr. Erardi and his brothers owned and operated Erardi Sales and Service on E. Main St., a local Studebaker dealership. He also worked for various local manufacturing companies. Mr. Erardi was last employed as the building superintendent of the Stoddard Building. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. He was a member of the following: 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Life member of Elks Lodge #35, American Legion Post #20, Friends of the Meriden Public Library, National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors, Royal Arcanum.

Mr. Erardi is survived by a son, Paul F. Erardi of Meriden; and a granddaughter, Paula Erardi of Meriden. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Erardi was predeceased by three sisters, Isabel Calabrese, Victoria Pagona and Gladys Bobbi; and five brothers, Anthony, Nicholas, Michael, Robert and Frank Erardi Jr. He also leaves his loyal companion, Hersey.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at 9:15 from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funnel Home, 88 E. Main St. and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Franciscan Home Care, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, CT 06451.

Ronald Brucker

MANCHESTER -- Ronald Brucker, 68, of 407 Hilliard St., formerly of Tulip Drive, Meriden, husband of Mary Ann "Mickey" Brucker, died suddenly at home on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002.

Born in Teaneck, N.J., on Sept. 16, 1934, son of the late Christopher and Caroline Crotta Brucker, he had resided in Manchester the past year and a half. He had attended New Jersey schools, graduated from Lafayette College, and was employed by Ulbrich Steel for over 20 years. Mr. Brucker was a parishioner of St. Bridget Church, Manchester, and formerly of St. Rose of Lima Church of Meriden. He was a member of the CT Yankee Barbershop Chorus.

Besides his wife, Mary Ann, he is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-laws, Frances Brucker of Arlington, Mass., Patricia and Steven Albert of S. Windsor, Nancy and Walden Powell of S. Windsor and Elizabeth Brucker of New Haven; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Christopher Brucker of S. Windsor and Michael and Linda Brucker of Austin, Texas ; he was a proud grandfather of 10.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Friday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. in St. Bridget Church, 80 Main St., Manchester. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Ernest H. Bruning

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Ernest H. Bruning, 64, of Shreveport, La., formerly a resident of Wallingford/Meriden area died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at the SLU Medical Center in Shreveport, La. He was the son of the late John and Agnes Bruning of Yalesville.

He leaves two sons, Ernest H. Bruning Jr. of Lutz, Fla., and Brian Bruning of Alto, Ga.; two daughters, Marie Simmons of Glenburnie, Md., and Cathy Linderman of Waldoaf, Md.; two granddaughters, Danette Simmons of Glenburnie, Md., and Devin Linderman of Waldoaf, Md.; and two sisters, Agnes Tempe of Yalesville and Evelyn Birks of Naugatuck.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Boone Funeral Home of Shreveport, La.

Shirley T. Thompson

WALLINGFORD -- Shirley T. Thompson, 90, of 1217 Whitney Ave., Hamden, formerly of New Haven died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002 at the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center.

She was born in Yarmouth, Maine, July 29, 1912, a daughter of the late Deane Stanley Sr. and Doris Amick Thomas. Until her retirement, she was an inspector at Universal Industries, J.B.T. Instruments and Eaton Corporation all of New Haven. She was a descendant of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by a son, Darik Thompson of Bridgeport; two daughters and a son-in-law, Hilda and Dennis Ward of Yalesville and Karen Toth of Wallingford; a brother, Deane Stanley Thomas Jr. of Rochester, N.Y.; two sisters, Audrey Thomas of Portland, Maine and Lois Perry of Florida; she is also survived by her granddaughters, Lisa Beyer and her husband, Bruce of Georgia, Katrina W. Pitt and her husband, Ryan of Wallingford, Lisa Anne Perretta and her husband, Vincenzo, also of Wallingford, Christina Clark and Anita Dufresne of Meriden and Sandra Acampora of Wallingford; grandsons, Richard Frisco and his wife, Joanne of Cheshire, Michael Frisco and his wife, Melinda of Wallingford, Casey P. Ward of Wallingford, Ralph Toth and his wife, Jackie of Wallingford, James Toth and his wife, Randy of Maryland, Marshall Joseph Toth of New Haven, Joseph Acampora and Anthony Toth of Wallingford; also survived by nine great-granddaughters; and 10 great-grandsons.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the In Memoriam Cemetery, Maplewood Ave., Wallingford. There are no calling hours. If friends so desire, gifts in her memory may be made to the Masonic Hospice, P.O. Box 70, Wallingford 06492. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford is in charge of arrangements.

John R. Arata

WALLINGFORD -- John R. Arata, 69, of Johnson Road, Wallingford, a native of Sea Cliff, Long Island, N.Y., died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at MidState Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Ann Szykuc Arata.

Born in Sea Cliff, Long Island, N.Y., Oct. 25, 1932, a son of the late George and Elsie Killacky Arata, he had been a Wallingford resident for many years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He was Director of Sales and Marketing at American Refractories and Crucible in North Haven, where he had been employed for 30 years until his retirement five years ago. An avid basketball fan, he had played on the Sea Cliff High School Team, and on the U.S. Marine Corps team, during his term of service.

Besides his wife Ann, he is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-law, Gerald M. Arata of Meriden and John A. and Jayne Arata of Hubbardston, Mass.; his daughter, Donna A. Morin of Torrington; six grandchildren, Sage, Kimberly, Lauren, Christine, David and Erin; three great-grandchildren, Margaret, Chelsea, and Julian; and a sister, Cloie Ferlitto of Sea Cliff. He was predeceased by two brothers, George and Alan Arata. John's family would like to thank Dr. Kathleen Bober-Sorcinelli and her staff for their kindness and support during his seven year illness.

His family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford. Funeral services will be held Thursday from The Wallingford Funeral Home at 9 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church, Yalesville, where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to MidState VNA and Hospice, 658 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450.
