Joseph A. Civali

MERIDEN -- Joseph A. Civali, 74, of 815 Paddock Ave., husband of Ann Grieco Civali, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.

A complete obituary will appear in Thursday's edition of the Record-Journal. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.

Mary D'Agostino

YORBA LINDA, Calif. -- Mary D'Agostino, 91, of 5972 Rich Hill Way, formerly of Meriden, wife of the late Angelo D'Agostino died at home after a long illness.

Born in Wallingford on March 1, 1911, the daughter of the late John and Angela Maria Vitelli, she had resided in Yorba Linda for the past 12 years. Mary had attended schools in Wallingford and was employed by Backus Fireworks Factory and Unimax Switch Factory for a number of years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and was a volunteer worker at bingo games at Miller Memorial.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Joann D'Agostino of Yorba Linda, Calif.; two grandchildren, Jason D'Agostino and Andrea D'Agostino; one sister, Margaret Lufbery of North Haven; one brother, Joseph Vitelli of New Britain; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters; one brother.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06518.

Richard S. Herman Sr.

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Mr. Richard Steven Herman Sr., 53 of Laurinburg, N.C., formerly of Wallingford, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002.

Mr. Herman was born July 11, 1949 in Middletown, son of George A. Herman Sr. and Frances Sadlowski Herman. He was a Restaurant Owner and a member of the Polish National Alumni.

His survivors include his wife, Janice Cote Herman of the home; a son, Richard S. Herman II of Rockville, Md.; a daughter, Celeste H. Ward of Casselberry, Fla.; two brothers, George A. Herman Jr. of Brookfield and Keith R. Herman of Woburn, Mass.; a sister, Elaine Ferguson of Wallingford; and five grandchildren.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Meriden.

Janet V. Reed

WALLINGFORD -- Janet Van Ness Reed, 76, of Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 in the Skyview Center in Wallingford. She was the wife of Charles R. Reed Sr.

Born in Summit, N.J., Aug. 23, 1926, a daughter of the late Elsie Miller, she was a Wallingford resident for many years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her two daughters, Emily Reed and Laura Smith, both of Wallingford; her four sons, Charles Reed Jr. of Wallingford, Peter Reed and his wife, Cindy of Wallingford, Larry Reed of Middletown and Harold Reed and his wife, Jean of Meriden; her granddaughter, Donna DeLorenzo; and her two great-grandsons, Brian and Joshua DeLorenzo.

Funeral services and interment in the In Memoriam Cemetery will be private. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford.

Anna E. Walmsley

WALLINGFORD -- Anna E. Walmsley, 95, of Madison Ave., died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at the MidState Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Arthur Walmsley.

She was born in Hungary, May 30, 1907, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Emma Kish Toth. Until her retirement in 1969, she was employed as director of employee's benefits at American Cyanamid. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wallingford since 1927 and was a past president and treasurer of the Women's Guild and had been very active in all church activities. Mrs. Walmsley was a member and past matron of Mishap Chapter No. 37 Order of Eastern Star and was a member of the Rebekah's.

She is survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Julius Toth of Wallingford and Arthur and Eleanor Toth of Plantsville; a sister and brother-in-law, Viola and Henry Aldrich of Wallingford; many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ethel Evans and Helen Walker.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Wallingford, 114 North Main St. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. If friends so desire, gifts in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church of Wallingford Memorial Fund, 114 North Main St., Wallingford 06492.

Jean M. Ackerbloom

MERIDEN -- Jean M. Ackerbloom, 65, wife of George A. Ackerbloom Sr. of 22 North Spring St., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 in the MidState Medical Center.

She was born in Union City, Feb. 2, 1937, a daughter of the late Michael and Helen Wojciechowski Pavlowski, she was a resident of Meriden for the past 22 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Jean Pardo and Denise and Wesley Russell, all of Meriden; also three sons, Michael Ackerbloom of Meriden, George Ackerbloom Jr. and his companion, Cheryl Prescott of Wallingford and Ricky Ackerbloom and his companion, Zar Barnowski, also of Meriden; seven grandchildren, Corey Manuel Pardo, Shevon Pardo, Dana Pardo, Justin Crum, Jasmine Mandelas, R.J. Russell and Jessica Ackerbloom; four great-grandchildren; an adopted son and his wife, David and Holly Loomis, and their children, Catherine and Taylor Loomis, all of Meriden; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Rick Riccio of Bristol; a sister-in-law, Mary Pavlowski of Naugatuck; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Pavlowski. "My Life, My Soul, My Heart, You Hold."

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with her family Friday, Nov. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden. The Rev. Fr. Joseph DiSciacca will conduct a prayer service in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m.

Donald J. Brandt

WALLINGFORD -- Donald J. Brandt of Ridge Road, Wallingford, husband of Rosemary MacLeod Brandt, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Meriden Center.

Don was born in Hartford, the son of the late Oscar and May Holland Brandt, and has been a lifelong Wallingford resident. He served with the U. S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Don played a major role in the Building Fund for Our Lady of Fatima Church and Assembly Hall, and was a member of the Permanent Building Committee of the Parish. He had been Office Manager for Wyatt Oil Corporation until his retirement. His proximity to Long Island Sound enhanced Don's enthusiasm for sailing. Over the years, he had several sloops and Regatta adventures.

Besides his wife, Rosemary, he is survived by his three nephews, James Trowbridge of Milford, Donald Trowbridge and his wife, Gail Trowbridge and Kevin Trowbridge, all of Meriden; his niece, Rosemary Trowbridge; and two grandnieces, Angela Trowbridge and Jennifer Trowbridge, all of Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Brandt Trowbridge. Don will be sadly missed by his wife, niece, nephews, grandnieces, cousins, and numerous other family relatives, and longtime friends.

His family will receive relatives and friends Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. at The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville. Funeral services will be held Saturday from The Yalesville Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church, Yalesville, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will be in St. John Cemetery. Gifts in his memory may be sent to either Our Lady of Fatima Church, 382 Hope Hill Road, Yalesville, CT 06492, or Franciscan Home Care, 267 Finch Avenue, Meriden CT 06451.

Joseph A. Civali

MERIDEN -- Joseph A. Civali, 74, of 815 Paddock Ave., husband of Ann Grieco Civali, died on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Meriden on March 25, 1928, the son of the late Anthony an Margaret Polvani Civali, he was a lifelong Meriden resident. Mr. Civali graduated from Wilcox Technical School and was a retired co-owner of Civali Bros Inc. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Besides his wife, Ann, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Toni Ann and Chris Mills of Bethesda, Md.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Barbara Civali and Joseph and Karen Civali, all of Meriden; six grandchildren, Michael, Dania, Christopher, Joey, James and Katie Civali; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie DeCarlo of Rocky Hill, Gloria Ragozzino of Cheshire, Joyce and Anthony Ragozzino of Meriden and Andrea and James McCusker of Old Lyme; a brother, Alphonse Civali of Berlin; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, James Joseph Civali.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the Joseph A. Ragozzino Scholarship, c/o Meriden Boys' and Girls' Club, 15 Lincoln St., Meriden, CT 06450.

Gertrude Kalkowski

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. -- Gertrude Kalkowski, 88, of Carl Junction, Mo., formerly of Kensington, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002. She was the wife of the late Stanley Kalkowski.

She was born in Southington, March 24, 1914, the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Galick. She attended schools in Southington, and was a resident of Kensington from 1953 until 1998. Gertrude had been employed by Peck Stowe in Southington and Attorney Edward Kalkowski in New Britain. She was a member of St. Paul's Church in Kensington.

She leaves two sons, Stephen Kalkowski and wife, Debra of Southington and Francis Guodace and wife, Donna of Webb City, Mo.; a daughter, Susan Madrak of Cheshire; a brother, Thomas Galick of Southington; grandchildren, Ryan and Aaron Kalkowski, Brian, Mark and Michael Guodace and Linda Shreve and husband, Scott; great-grandchildren, Derrick and Conner Shreve and Ethan Guodace; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Monday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, Kensington. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in New Britain.
