John F. Hacku
WALLINGFORD -- John F. Hacku, 88, beloved husband of the late Rita A. Fanfesti Hacku, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Skyview Center in Wallingford.
His family will receive relatives and friends and funeral services will be held in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday morning at a time to be announced in a complete obituary notice to appear in Monday's Record Journal. Interment with military honors, will be in St. John Cemetery
in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust, P.O. Box 362, Wallingford, CT 06492.
Donald Ward
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Donald Lee Ward, died, Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in the arms of his wife, at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida.
He was born in Hanover, N.H., on Oct. 3, 1931. He was a retired State Marshall of Connecticut; a former Chairman of the Economic Development Commission; former member of the Board of Finance; former member of the Zoning Board of Appeals; Justice of the Peace; Lions Club member; Italian Political Club member; member of Democratic Town Committee; member Loyal Order of Moose; Marine Corp League; and Corporate of New Britain General Hospital. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1951 to 1954 and a veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joanne G. Ward; daughters, Karen Ann Ward of Pawcatcuk and Mary-Ellen Johnson of Berlin; four grandchildren, Jenni-Lee Johnson, Allyson Johnson, Ian Ward Timmons and Grace Ryan Timmons; three sisters, Mabel Dyer of Vermont, Myrtle Spaulding of Vermont and Aldea Brown of Arizona. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph Ward of Strafford, Vt.; and his faithful dog, MyKai.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, New Britain chapter. The funeral arrangements are by the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange, Florida 32129.
Paul D. Wingate
BRANFORD -- Paul D. Wingate, passed away on Nov. 15, 2002, in Connecticut Hospice at the age of 81.
Mr. Wingate, the devoted husband of Joan Lapides Wingate, was born in Chicago. He graduated from the University of Michigan, Tau Beta Pi, with a BS in Engineering in 1943. During World War II, Mr. Wingate was commissioned at Yale in the Army Air Corps, went through flight training, and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. After the war he moved to the New Haven area and joined Hamden Steel and Aluminum Corp., eventually becoming its CEO and owner. Mr. Wingate was a past National President of the Association of Steel Distributors, and was named Steel Distributor of the Year in 1970. He was also a Director of the Steel Service Center Institute, and was named a Lifetime Honorary Board Member. Mr. Wingate was a past Director of the New Haven Savings Bank, and a member of its Executive and Trust Committees. He was a past VP, Director and part owner of the Long Wharf Steamship Lines (the "Liberty Belle"). Mr. Wingate was extremely active in community affairs, serving as President of the New Haven Boys' Club from 1959-1972, and as a member of its Board of Managers from 1950 to present. He played a leading role on the Yale-United Way Football Committee during its entire 15-year history. He was also elected to the National Board of Directors of the Boys' Clubs of America in 1968, served on its Executive Committee, and was the recipient of numerous National Honors. Mr. Wingate was a past VP and Director of Gaylord Hospital, and was later elected an Honorary Director. He also served as VP and Director of the New Haven Symphony, Director of the New Haven Preservation Trust, VP and Director of the Shubert Theatre, and as Director of the New Haven Chamber of Commerce. In recent years, Mr. Wingate was Co-Chair of the Marsh Fellows of the Peabody Museum, Fellow of Silliman College; Yale University, and a member of the English Speaking Union.
In addition to Joan, his loving wife of 54 years, Mr. Wingate is survived by his three devoted children and spouses, Richard Wingate (Karen) of Westport, Randy Wingate (Tanya) of North Haven and Betsy Hausman (Joel) of Greenbrae, Calif. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Rachael, Nicholas, Jenna, Michael and David Wingate, and Alex and Jamis Hausman.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 18th at 11 a.m. at Congregation Mishkin Israel, 785 Ridge Road, Hamden. The interment will be in the Mishkin Israel Cemetery, Whalley Avenue in New Haven. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls' Clubs of America, the Peabody Museum, or to the charity of your choice. Period of mourning will be private. Weller Funeral Home, 493 Whitney Avenue is in charge of arrangements.
Francis T. Adamowicz
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Francis T. "Frank" Adamowicz, also known as Sonny to family and friends, 73, died of heart failure on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in Winter Haven. He was the beloved husband of Vivian Lautenbach Adamowicz.
Born in Cromwell, on June 22, 1929, Mr. Adamowicz retired in 1989 from the Fowler and Hunting Company. An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War. He was an avid golfer, bowler and card player as well as an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Haines City, Fla. He was devoted to his family, greatly loved by all and will be truly missed.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Judith Adamowicz of Meriden and Joyce Chasse and her husband, James and daughters, Kelly and Ashley of East Hampton; a stepdaughter, Patricia Baihaghy and her husband, Tony and son, Brian of Carlsbad, Calif.; three brothers, Henry Adamowicz of Auburndale, Fla., Raymond Adamowicz of Middletown and Walter Adamowicz of Cromwell; and two sisters, Florence Dimauro of Berlin and Laura Johnson of New Philadelphia, Ohio.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 66 Cottage St., East Berlin, CT. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery

Helen K. Cichowski
WALLINGFORD -- Helen Koval Cichowski, 88, of North Cherry Street, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. She was the wife of the late Joseph S. Cichowski.
Born in Warren, Mass., June 9, 1914, a daughter of the late John and Johanna Kuras Koval she had been a Wallingford resident since 1926. She was employed by the former International Silver Co. for 25 years until her retirement in 1980. She was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church of Wallingford, a member of the Holy Rosary Society and the Ladies Guild of the church, the Meriden Council of Catholic Women, AARP Wallingford Chapter, the Senior Organization of American Retirees and the Wallingford Senior Center.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria L. and Albert P. Creto; her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph W. Cichowski, Sr. and his wife, JoAnne, all of Wallingford; her seven grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher Cichowski of South Meriden, LeighAnn and James Cei, Cheri and Ed Smeriglio, all of Yalesville, Gregory and Mary Cichowski of Wallingford, Joseph W. Cichowski, Jr. and Janet of Milford, Albert N. and Cassandra V. Creto of Nashua, N.H. and Cassandra L. and Michael Matteo of Cromwell; her 10 great-grandchildren, Amber, Marissa and Steven Cichowski, Brittany and Ashley Cei, Jacklyn and Jessica Smeriglio and Erica and Michael Matteo, and Nicole Cichowski; her two sisters, Anne Rogers and Wanda Swantek, both of Wallingford; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sister, Mary Uliasz, Elizabeth Jennings, Paula Galko and Laura Koval.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS. Peter and Paul R.C. Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be in In Memoriam Cemetery
in Wallingford. Mass cards will be appreciated by the family.
John F. Hacku
WALLINGFORD -- John F. Hacku, 88, of Cheshire Road, beloved husband of the late Rita A. Fanfesti Hacku, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Skyview Center in Wallingford.
Born in Wallingford, April 1, 1914, he was a son of the late John and Anna Kuchta Haczku and had been a lifelong resident. He had been employed by Wallace Silversmiths for several years and the Town of Wallingford Water and Sewer Department, for 22 years until his retirement in 1984. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 843rd Advanced Gasoline Supply Co. of the Third Army. He was the recipient of three battle stars for active combat in the invasion of Normandy, the battle of St. Lowe, and the battle of the Bulge. He also received an award for Meritorious Service to his country, and served with the U.S. Army Band for six years, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Raoul Lufbery Post No. 591 of Wallingford. He was a life member of the American Federation of Musicians. An accomplished trombone player, he played with the Meriden City Band, and the Meriden Wind ensemble. Mr. Hacku also enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid salt water fisherman.
He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and John Otto of Guilford, Rita and Walter Pacheco of Wallingford, and Jeanette and Jack Schuster of Killingworth; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Mary Ann Hacku of Windsor, Calif., Ronald and Kathleen Hacku, of Guilford and Robert and Ann Hacku of Wallingford; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Helen Chatfield of Yalesville; a brother, Daniel Hacku of Northford; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Duncan; and a brother, Frank Hacku.

Filomena Markowski
MERIDEN -- Filomena 'Mana' Davino Markowski, wife of the late Leo J. Markowski, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at the Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center, on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002.
She was born in Meriden, Jan. 18, 1916, a daughter of the late Joseph and Ernestine Mezzanotte Davino. She graduated from Meriden High School in 1934 and attended Laurel Business College. She worked as a school secretary at King Street School until her marriage to Leo J. Markowski in 1940. After raising her family she was employed by the City of Meriden Building Department and later worked in the Seventh Circuit Court. For many years she was active in the Democratic Party where she served as Registrar of Voters. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Mark Drechsler and Betty and Chris Poulos, all of Southington; and her devoted grandsons who were the joy of her life, Michael Poulos and his wife, Robin of New York City, James Poulos and his wife, Jennifer of Tolland, Christopher Poulos of Fairfield, David Drechsler and his wife, Diana, Brian Drechser and his wife, Courtney, all of Southington and Steven Drechsler of New Britain. She also leaves two sisters, Ann Indorf and Frances Tomassetti; a brother, Mario Davino, all of Meriden; four great-grandchildren, Jared and Nicholas Poulos and Jacob and Katherine Drechsler; as well as her dear and caring friends at Clinton Beach; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, John Davino.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday morning Nov. 19, beginning at 10:45 a.m. from the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad Street, with her Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:30 a.m. She will be interred with her husband in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Chester Sroka
MERIDEN -- Chester Sroka, 83, of 125 Willow St., died Saturday evening, Nov. 16, 2002, at Meriden Center after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden on April 4, 1919, the son of the late Cazmir and Louise Sroka, he had resided in Meriden for his entire life. He attended local schools and was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for a number of years, retiring several years ago. Mr. Sroka was a veteran of World War II having served in the European Theatre of Operations, including participating in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Sroka was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church and was a member of the PLAV, the Polish Knights and the Polish Falcons.
He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Spiek Sroka and Phyllis Sroka, both of Meriden; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Adamczyk of Hamden; and by three brothers, Edwin, Henry and Walter Sroka, all of Meriden.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for him and his brother, Walter, both of whom passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16th. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours for both brothers will be on Wednesday morning prior to the Mass from 8:30 to 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in their memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Walter Sroka
MERIDEN -- Walter "Whitey" F. Sroka, 87, of 98 Orchid Rd., husband of Helen Spiek Sroka, died Saturday morning, Nov. 16, 2002, at MidState Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden on June 2, 1915, the son of the late Cazmir and Louise Sroka, he had resided in Meriden for his entire life. He attended local schools and was employed by Alderman Motors and more recently by the City of Meriden as a Housing Inspector for a number of years, retiring in 1977. Mr. Sroka was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church and a member of the P.L.A.V., and a past president of the Polish Knights and the Polish Democratic Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by several sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Adamczyk of Hamden; and by two brothers, Edwin and Henry Sroka, both of Meriden.
