Ethel Schipke

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Ethel Gibney Schipke, 82, of Dunedin, Fla., died at her home, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002.

Born in Meriden, daughter of the late Mary and Hugh Gibney, she attended local schools. She was a parish member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Dunedin.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert N. Schipke; sons, Robert H. of Florida and Andrew J. of New Jersey; brothers, Edward Gibney of Florida and Arthur of New Britain; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private.

Deanna L. Schneider

SWEETWATER, Tenn. -- Deanna (Dee) Lynn Schneider, 37, of 265 Old Loudon Road, Sweetwater, Tenn., a native of Meriden, passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002 at U.T. Medical Center, Knoxville, Tenn. A 1982 graduate of Lenoir City High School and a graduate of I.T.T. Technical Institute. Employed by Honda TNT Warehouse and Jenkins Realty. Formerly employed by Sweetwater Hospital.

She is survived by her 6 year old son, Reid Daniel Kozloski-Schneider, her parents, Roger and Linda Schneider, all of Sweetwater, Tenn; her sister, Danielle Schneider of Bean Station, Tenn.; her

Brother, Jeffrey Scott Schneider of La Follette, Tenn.; her grandmother, Annette Doty of Meriden; several nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

Graveside service and interment will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Serendipity Cemetery, 265 Old Loudon Road, Sweetwater, Tenn., with Rev. David Koopman and Rev. Dwayne Leming officiating. Memorials may be made to the Reid Schneider Trust Fund, c/o AmSouth Bank, P.O. Box 7, Madisonville, TN 37354. Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville, TN.

John E. Cannan Jr.

WALLINGFORD -- John E. Cannan Jr., 43, of Wallingford, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002.

Born in New Haven, March 26, 1959, the son of the late John E. Cannan Sr. and Edith E. Harwood Cannan, he had been a lifelong resident of Wallingford and New Haven. A pipefitter-welder, he had been a member of Local 777, Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, for many years. A lover of nature and the outdoors, he was also a talented artist.

He is survived by a son, Jason Cannan of Ivoryton; a daughter, Jessica Shorey of Branford; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean C. and John D. Landolfi of Branford and Barbara C. and Melvyn D. Horowitz of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service Friday, Nov. 22, at 1:30 p.m. in Beaverdale Memorial Park, in Section H, Hamden. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford.

Richard A. Fragola Sr.

SOUTHINGTON -- Richard A. Fragola Sr., 63, of 156 Bristol St., died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002 at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Noreen (DeBarba) Fragola.

Born March 1, 1939, in Southington, son of the late Anthony and Lisa (Ciarmella) Fragola. He was a teacher in the Southington school system from 1961 until 1994. Mr. Fragola was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard A. Fragola Jr., a brother, Alfred Fragola, both of Southington; a sister, Edith Santacroce of Plainville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Franco.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, to St. Thomas Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 2550 U.S. Highway 1, North Brunswick, NJ 088902-4301.

Michael F. Garufi

MERIDEN -- Michael Francis Garufi, 89, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, formerly of Meriden, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002 in Ohio. He was the husband of the late Josephine (Molgano) Garufi.

Born in New Haven, on Feb. 24, 1913, the son of the late Frank and Theresa (Sabia) Garufi. He was a former resident of Ashtabula, Ohio; Meriden and Bridgeport. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Trinacria Society. Mr. Garufi was an avid golfer all his life and an active volunteer at MidState Medical Center in Meriden for many years.

He is survived by a loving son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Vernal Garufi of Elyria, Ohio; a loving daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dale Stiebeling of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; two beloved granddaughters, Angela Brock and Gina Garufi; three cherished great-grandchildren, Hadley, Jacob and Caulin.

The funeral will be held on Saturday Nov. 23, at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Rose's Church at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington Calling hours will be on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Stephen P. Hayes

MERIDEN -- Stephen P. Hayes, 82, a lifelong resident of Meriden, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 at The Bradley Home with his children at his side. He was the devoted and beloved husband of the late Dorothy Ritchie Hayes, who died in 1997.

Born on Feb. 9, 1920, he was the son of the late James P. and Louise L. Hayes. Steve graduated from Meriden High School in 1938 and served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He was employed at several local companies as a tool and die maker. A meticulous craftsman, he helped numerous people with his many skills. As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Meriden for 62 years, he gave his time and talents to the church, serving on numerous committees. He particularly enjoyed singing in the choir throughout his membership. Steve served as a faithful volunteer and board member at the Meriden Soup Kitchen. For the last nine years, he lived at The Bradley Home, where he became an important and loved part of his new community and where he continued to put his talents to work for the benefit of the Home. Steve was a gentle and humble man whose positive nature and generous service touched many lives.

Steve is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Gail Hayes of Durham; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and James Morris of Durham, N.C., and Sarah and Daniel Gilligan of Windsor; six grandchildren, Jay and Will Morris, Kimberly and Timothy Hayes and Amy and Lauren Gilligan; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Arline Ritchie of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Steve's life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 159 East Main St., Meriden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church's Living Memorial Fund, 15 Pleasant St., Meriden, CT 06450 or to The Bradley Home, 320 Colony Street, Meriden, CT 06450.

Walter S. Knapp

SOUTHINGTON -- Walter S. "Stretch" Knapp, 74, of Academy St., Southington died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at The Summit at Plantsville.

Born in Southington, August 24, 1928, son of the late John and Teckla Zima Knapp, he was a lifelong Southington resident. Mr. Knapp was the owner-operator of Walt's Barber Shop in Milldale for many years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran or World War II and a communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Plantsville.

Mr. Knapp is survived by his brother, Edward Knapp of Southington; two sisters, Mary Folcik of Bristol and Janina Kirchbaum of Wolcott; and several nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Ted "Snapper" Knapp; and his sister, Gladys Kostzewski.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 9 a.m. from the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville with a Mass at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations in Walter's memory may be made to the Holy Trinity Church Building Fund, 200 Summer St., Plantsville, CT 06479.

Gladys Pereyo

MERIDEN -- Gladys (Ruggles) Pereyo, 92, of Meriden, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, after a brief illness.

She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Pereyo; her daughter, Diane; her sister, Edna; and her two brothers, Gene and Walter. She is survived by three sisters, Beatrice Piatek of Cheshire, Shirley Hunt of New Hampshire, Doris Lacroix of California; three grandchildren, David A. Waller of Meriden, with whom she made her home, and Pamela and Kerri McGrath.

Services will be on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kingdom Hall.

Frank A. Privizzino

MANCHESTER -- Frank A. Privizzino, 85, of Manchester, husband of the late, Mary (Lombardo) Privizzino died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.

He was born May 4, 1917 in Hartford, son of the late Paul and Lucy (Tine) Privizzino and had been a resident of Manchester for most of his life. Mr. Privizzino was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was employed for over 42 years with Pratt & Whitney, retiring in 1982 as a supervisor. Mr. Privizzino was a former communicant of St. James Church in Manchester and was a member of B.P.O.E. No. 1893 in Manchester.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph F. and Kathleen Privizzino of Meriden; two grandsons, Joseph F. Privizzino Jr. and his wife, Tammy and Jeffrey A. Privizzino and his fiancee, Alissa; a great-grandson, Joseph F. Privizzino III, all of Meriden; and a sister, Rose Fortunato of California. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Mildred L'Rosa.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. James Church, 896 Main St., Manchester. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Manchester. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association of Greater Hartford, 2550 U.S. Route 1, North Brunswick, NJ 08902. Holmes Funeral Home, Manchester, has care of the arrangements.
