Ilse Smolensky

WALLINGFORD -- Ilse Bogaardt Dammers Smolensky, 82, Saw Mill Lane, Amherst, N.H., formerly of Chelmsford, Mass. and Fritz Place, Yalesville, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Arcady Smolensky.

Born in Batavia, Indonesia, June 28, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Hendrikal Agaerbeek Bogaardt. Raised in Holland, she had been an Executive Secretary for the Dutch Navy, and a Certified Nurses Aide, for the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford for 35 years until her retirement. She moved to Fort Pierce, Fla., in 1988, to Chelmsford, Mass., in 1998 until moving to Amherst, N.H., this summer to reside with her daughter. While residing in Yalesville she was a member of the Yalesville United Methodist Church, and a past member of the Order of Rebecca No 15, of Hamden.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Kenneth Bell of Amherst, N.H., Doris and Charles Samson of Newtown and Laura and James Wilner of Marlboro, Mass.; a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur P. and Kathy Dammers, of Granby; and 11 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband in 1983, George H. Dammers; and a brother, Ferry Bogaardt.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at I p.m. in the Yalesville United Methodist Church, with the Rev Eric Fjeldal, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery in Wallingford. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the Yalesville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 8 New Place, Yalesville, CT 06492. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main Street. Yalesville section of Wallingford.

Russell C. Cutler Jr.

MARION - Russell "Skip" Clark Cutler Jr., 72, of 1334 Marion Ave., Marion, formerly of Branford passed away on Friday, Nov. 15, 2002. He was the husband of Rosemary Mercier Cutler.

Born in Worcester, Mass., on Feb. 11, 1930, he was the son of the late Jane Smith Cutler Kling and George Kling and Russell Cutler Sr. He was a graduate of West Haven High School and served four years as an Airman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked as SNET as a Special Service Co-ordinator for 36 years. He was an avid golfer and spent many hours on the golf courses in Hamden and New Haven.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Pat DeLucia and Lynn and Richard Alongi of Hamden; three grandsons, Stephen DeLucia and Richard and Marc Alongi, all of Hamden; he is also survived by four step-daughters, Edythe Cuomo of Wallingford, Jennifer Gagne of East Hartford, Joanne Buehler of Marion and Nicole Cuomo of Killingworth; a step-son, Paul Cuomo of West Haven; a step-brother, George Kling of Branford; nine step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; also special cousins, Barbara and Jess Hagy and family of Westbrook. He was predeceased by a grandchild, Michael Alongi; and a step-grandchild, Kevin Buehler.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass which will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen Church, Ridge Road, Hamden. Memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405. The Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven is in charge of arrangements.

Stanley F. Gill

MERIDEN - Stanley F. Gill, of 128 Eaton Ave., husband of the late Lottie (Cichowski) Gill, died suddenly at home on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002.

Born in Meriden on March 12, 1912, son of the late Rudolph and Sophie (Horozy) Gill, he resided in Meriden his entire life and graduated from Meriden schools. Mr. Gill served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, and retired after 20 years of service. He then worked for Cuno Engineering and Packer Machine Company, retiring in 1965.

He is survived by one daughter, Sandra M. Gill of Meriden.

The funeral and burial will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.

Edward W. Gumkowski

BRANFORD - Edward W. Gumkowski of 115 South Montowese St., Branford passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002.

Mr. Gumkowski was born in Branford on Oct. 16, 1922, a son of the late Julius and Helen Arkasky Gumkowski. He worked for the Town of Branford Public Works Department for 33 years, and was a member of the Branford Senior Citizens and the Maine Club.

He was the brother of Judith Limoncelli, Stanley Gumkowski and Evelyn Hamilton, all of Branford and Frank Gumkowski of Wallingford; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St. Branford Friday at 12:30 p.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church at 1p.m. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call Friday prior to the funeral from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Branford Senior Center, 11 Cherry Hill Rd., Branford, 06405.

Patricia D. Tardif

PLAINVILLE - Patricia D. (Arena) Tardif, 59, of 38 Maxine Road, Plainville, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002 after a long five year fight with cancer. She was the daughter of Carmella V. Arena of Southington and the late Nicholas F. Arena.

Besides her mother, is survived by her husband, Edward J. Tardif of Plainville; a daughter, Sheila A.T. Siemiatkaska and her husband, Gary; and five grandchildren, all of Columbia, Tenn. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary. She is also survived by two sisters and a brother; Joan A. Tardif and her husband, Donald of Plantsville, Nicholas S. Arena and his wife, Lisa of Plantsville and Nancy St. Pierre and her husband, David of Orlando, Fla.; six aunts; one uncle; and 18 nieces and nephews.

Pat graduated from New Britain High School and has been a resident of Plainville for 37 years. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, The OLM Ladies Guild, and the Living with Cancer Support Group of New Britain. She was employed by several business in the area, the latest being Fad Tool of Bristol.

Funeral services will held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Forestville to Our Lady of Mercy Church, Plainville for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Auxiliary Cancer Resource Library, c/o New Britain General Hospital, 100 Grand St., New Britain, CT 06050.

John R. Wolfe

WALLINGFORD - John R. Wolfe, 57, of 54 Main St., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002. He was the beloved son of Roxanne Montesi.

A Vietnam veteran, he leaves a son, Michaeljon Wolfe of Wallingford; a sister, Judith Matarazzo; a brother, James Wolfe; four nephews; and one niece.

A memorial Mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, South Meriden.

Luis A. Cardona

MERIDEN -- Luis Angel Cardona, 62, of Broad Street, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at MidState Medical Center with his loving family by his side.

Luis was born April 14, 1940, in Aguada, P.R., a son to the late Manuel and Celedona (Rivera) Cardona. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at area restaurants.

He leaves to mourn his passing, three brothers, Epifanio Muniz of Meriden, Manuel and Esteban, Venacia Muniz, all of Puerto Rico; two sisters, Dominago Chaparro of Meriden and Tomasa Muniz of Puerto Rico; and many close nieces and nephews that were considered his children. In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by a brother, Anibal Muniz; and a sister, Gloria Muniz.

Calling hours will take place Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, with the Rev. Jouse Estrada officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 East Main St., Meriden, has been entrusted with the arrangements.

James H. Hocking

YALESVILLE -- James H. Hocking, 83, of 65 Masonic Ave., formerly of 546 Church Street, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, Wallingford. He was the husband of Barbara Harrison Hocking.

He was born in Wallingford, Feb. 26, 1919, a son of the late James and Ellen Prouty Hocking.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Patricia Bourgeois of East Haddam and Gail Bighinati of Yalesville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Berniece Carlson.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, Masonic Ave., Wallingford. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private. If friends so desire, gifts in his memory may be made to the Yalesville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 273 South Elm St., is in charge of arrangements. Mary Thibodeau

MERIDEN -- Mary dos Anjos Riberio Thibodeau, 87, formerly of Hanover St., Meriden, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Coccomo Memorial Healthcare Center. She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Riberio and her second husband, Al Thibodeau.

Born in Brazil, Oct. 15, 1915, a daughter of the late Joao and Marie da Conceicao D'Almeida, she had been a Meriden resident for many years. She had been a health aide for Homemaker Service in Meriden for many years until her retirement, and was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church.

She is survived by her son, Joseph Riberio; and two daughters and a son-in-law, Lucy Golden, and Doris and Roger Saucier, all of Meriden; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; three sister, Piadad Dias and Laura Cruz and her husband, King, both of Wallingford, and Irene Pereira of Meriden; three brothers, Adrien Almeida and his wife, Juliette of Meriden, Tony D'Almeida of Wallingford, and Amaro Silva and his wife, Jean of Hickory, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Dorothy Porter; her son, Albert Riberio; and two sisters, Mary Todescini and Virginia Urbano.

Her family will receive relatives and friends, Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford. Funeral services will be held Saturday from The Wallingford Funeral Home at 9 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Joseph Church, Meriden, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492, or the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.
