Shirley I. Slitz

MERIDEN -- Shirley I. Slitz, 89, of Oak St., died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at the Miller Memorial Community.

Born May 11, 1913 in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Symon and Mary Obrzut Slisz. Shirley attended local schools, was a lifelong resident of Meriden, worked for the Miller Company for over 40 years. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, a member of the PLAV Post 189 and the Senior Citizen Center. An avid bowler she participated for many seasons in the Tuesday and Thursday bowling league. She enjoyed yard work and cooking and was a 16 year caregiver to her sister, Vicky.

She leaves her sister, Victoria Jansury; her brother, John Slisz and her sister-in-law, Rose Slisz, all of Meriden; several nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Frank Slisz and Edward Slisz; and her sisters, Catherine Gurny and Anna Slisz.

Her funeral will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Stempien Funeral Home the morning of her funeral from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Doris F. Thorpe

Doris F. Smith Thorpe, 75, of 292 NE Solida Circle, Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Northford, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Martin Memorial Hospital, Stuart, Fla.

Born in Naugatuck on May 8, 1927, daughter of the late Harold L. and Frances Haywood Smith. A graduate of the former Grace New Haven School of Nursing, she obtained her BS from Southern Connecticut State University and her Masters from the University of New Haven. She had worked for Yale-New Haven Hospital for 44 years, until her retirement as a Nursing Administrator. She had served as Captain for the No. Branford Volunteer Nurse Corp.

She was the mother of Peter Thorpe of Wallingford, Todd K. Thorpe and his wife, JoAnn of Northford and the late Gary L. Thorpe and Cindy Dale Thorpe Jalbert; grandmother of Peter, Layla and Tucker Thorpe. She was predeceased by brothers, Leon and Robert Smith.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted in the Northford Cemetery, Saturday, at 12 noon. Relatives and friends may call at the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Edward A. Zolkiewicz Sr.

WALLINGFORD -- Edward A. Zolkiewicz, Sr., 90, of Ward Street, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford. He was the husband of the late Victoria Gadzinski Zolkiewicz.

Born, Oct. 7, 1912, a son of the late Tadeusz and Pauline Pomykala Zolkiewicz, he had been a lifelong resident. He was employed by the Town of Wallingford Police Department for 32 years until his retirement in 1974 as Senior Patrolman with badge #1. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance Group No. 513, of Wallingford and was a Past President and Past Financial Secretary, a position which he held for many years. He also had held offices in the PNA Council #138 and had been a past delegate to several National PNA conventions. He was a member of the Connecticut State Police Association and the Wallingford Police Benevolent Association. He was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford where he was a member of the first class to receive First Holy Communion.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Victoria Zolkiewicz-MacInnis and Bruce MacInnis; his son and daughter-in-law, Edward A. Zolkiewicz, Jr. and Joanne S. Zolkiewicz, all of Wallingford; his grandsons, Christopher and Michael Zolkiewicz; his three sisters, Amelia (Mrs. Raymond) Drehs, Sophie (Mrs. Leo) Albertini and Pauline (Mrs. Archie) Passmore, all of Wallingford; his brother and sister-in-law, Theodore and Virginia Zolkiewicz of North Haven; his sisters-in-law, Velma (Mrs. Vincent) Zolkiewicz of Wallingford, and Rose (Mrs. Henry) Zolkiewicz of Phoenix, Ariz.; his dear friend, Mary Lincoln of Wallingford; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Henry Zolkiewicz and Vincent R. Zolkiewicz.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS. Peter and Paul Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Wallingford. Gifts in his memory may be sent to SS. Peter and Paul Church, 139 North Orchard St., Wallingford, or to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.

Arthur Brooks

SOUTHINGTON -- Arthur R. Brooks, 69, of Riverside Drive, Southington, died Christmas Day, Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at the West Haven Veterans' Hospital. He was the husband of Joan Bussett Brooks.

Born May 29, 1933, in Waterbury, son of the late Melville and Hazel Leisring Brooks, he had been a Southington resident for the past 46 years. Mr. Brooks was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country in Korea.

In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by his daughter, Lori Brock of Kentucky; one brother, Melvin Brooks of Maine; one sister, Elsie Champagne of Waterbury; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Robert.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at the Plantsville Congregational Church, Plantsville. Burial will follow in Beaverdale Cemetery in Hamden. Calling hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville.

Allen Kingsford

MERIDEN -- Allen Robert Kingsford, 96, formerly of Yale Avenue, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Westfield Care and Rehab Center. He was the husband of the late Lois Kuhn Kingsford.

Born April 19, 1906, in Yalesville, he was the son of the late Robert and Emma Allen Kingsford. He retired in 1971 as chief corporate auditor for the former International Silver Company. He was a member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church, having served as a former vestryman. He had been deputy director of Civil Defense of Meriden, navigation instructor of Meriden Power Sail Squadron, served for 42 years in Boy Scouting, was field scout commissioner of Senior Scouting, was a member of Meriden Rifle Club and was an avid sailor.

He is survived by two sisters, MaryLou Dewey and Frances Asch, both of Southington; and a good friend, William Eppehimer of Watertown. He was predeceased by a sister, Joan E. Kingsford; and a brother, Harry Kingsford.

There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.

Valerie Krock

MERIDEN -- Valerie Dziurgot Krock, 81, of Westbrook and formerly of Meriden, wife of the late Rudolph P. Krock, died on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Coccomo Health Care Center after a long illness.

Born Sept. 18, 1921, in Meriden, the daughter of the late Stanley and Antonina Brysh Dziurgot, Mrs. Krock was educated in Meriden schools. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.

She is survived by one son, Rudolph P. Krock Jr.; and one grandson, Neil P. Krock, both of Lawrenceville, GA; two sisters, Evelyn Petrosky of Meriden and Theresa Berkholz of Old Saybrook; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister, Genevieve; and three brothers, Edward, Benjamin and Bronislaw Dziurgot.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend graveside services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, prior to the graveside services.

Giovanni A. Laurenza

MERIDEN -- Giovanni A. Laurenza, 79, husband of Giovanna Bertoldo Laurenza, of 110 Ione Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in the MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Roccheta e Croce, Italy, son of the late Luigi and Rosina Laurenza. He was a resident of Meriden for the past 42 years. He retired from the Union Parker Co. after 17 years as a machinist. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Mr. Laurenza was a man of many talents. He was an excellent sketch artist who enjoyed reading and writing poetry. He also had a fondness for singing. He lived a life of simplicity, hard work and creativity. He adored his wife, children and especially his grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Antonio and Siri Laurenza, of Newtown; two daughters and a son-in-law, Rosina and Mark Kevorkian, of Meriden, and Stefanina M. Laurenza and her fiance, Steven Zygmont, of Meriden; nine grandchildren, Samantha, Alexandrea, Roseanna and Joanna Laurenza, Dominic John, Lauren Paige and Nicole Taylor Uvino, also Matthew and Jacqueline Kevorkian; one sister, Nicolina Laurenza of Italy; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Luigi Laurenza; and a brother, Giuseppe Laurenza.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Saturday, Dec. 28, beginning with a gathering at 9:15 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., with his Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He will be entombed in the mausoleum of Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Catherine M. McGloin

Southington- Catherine M. McGloin, 74, of 491 Mill St., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Southington Care Center. She was the wife of the late William F. McGloin.

Born Nov. 5, 1928, in Southington, the daughter of the late Anton and Mary (Spinello) Wagenbrenner. Prior to her retirement in 1993, she was employed at Southington Savings Bank for over 20 years. She was a member of the Southington Community Theatre and did many leading roles there. She was also a member of the Bristol Civic Theatre, Cheshire Community Theater, New Britain Repertory, Oval in the Grove Theatre in Farmington and she was a former longtime member of St. Thomas Choir.

She is survived by two sons, William F. McGloin Jr. and his wife Kathryn, Michael J. McGloin, all of Southington; five daughters, Robin A. McGloin of Milldale, Heidi A. Malley and her husband Brian, Meg A. DeLucia and her husband Salvatore, Mindy A. McGloin, all of Southington, and Libby A. McGloin of Plantsville; seven grandchildren, Erik, Maribeth, Taylor, Morgan and Mason McGloin, Faryn Malley and Anna DeLucia; a cousin and special friend, Nadine Britton; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Beth McGloin; a brother, Anton Wagonbrenner Jr.; and a sister, Betty McGloin.

The funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Donations may be made in her memory to the Southington Community Theatre, P.O Box 411, Southington, CT 06489.

Elizabeth Miller

LEXINGTON, KY -- Elizabeth B. (Buchko) Miller, 85, formerly of Meriden, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Wingate of Needham in Needham, Mass. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Miller.

She was born in Meriden.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet M. Winnick and her husband, Burton, of Weston, MA; a son and daughter-in-law, David P. Miller and his wife, Vicky, of Lexington, KY; a sister, Irene Matyas of Meriden; and the late Edward Buchko.

Services will be held in Lexington, KY.
