Anastasia Pappas

CHESHIRE -- Anastasia Pappas, 78, of 40 Hearthstone Drive, wife of Steve Pappas, died on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 19, 1924, in Bridgeport, the daughter of the late Michael and Evelyn Siavrakas, she had resided in Cheshire since 1972 and attended Meriden schools. She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Britain and the Golden Rascals, and a member and past president of the Daughters of Penelope.

Besides her husband, Steve, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kalliroy and Alan Greenberg of East Haven; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jack Pappas, and Stratos and Karen Pappas, all of Meriden; eight grandchildren, Jacklyn, Kathryn and Michael Greenberg, Stathis, Jacob, Damara, Andreas and Kristina Pappas; a sister, Toula Farakos of Meriden; also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Gus and Thomas Siavrakas.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, from the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 301 W. Main St., New Britain. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Trisagion Service will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 301 W. Main St., New Britain, CT 06052, or the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

Bryan Richard

BRISTOL -- Bryan J. Richard, 19, of 14 Ebert Road, Bristol, and formerly of Guilford, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002.

Bryan was born July 19, 1983, in Meriden, and is survived by his father, Leo Richard Jr. of Ballston Spa, NY; his mother and step-father, Shari (Gillis) Seebauer and Mark Seebauer, both of Bristol; a brother, Erich Seebauer of Bristol; two sisters, Shannon Richard and Megan Richard, both of Bristol; his paternal grandmother, Jacqueline Leffingwell of New York; his maternal grandparents, Edgar Gillis and Liz Brandl, both of Meriden; and his step-grandmother, Gladys Seebauer of Bristol.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Forestville. Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home.

Julia Smolinski

AUBURN, WA -- Julia (Julie) Smolinski, 81, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Hallmark Manor Nursing Home in Auburn, WA. She was married to Matthew Smolinski, who preceded her passing in 1975.

Julie was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Meriden, to the late George and Catherine Gawlak.

In addition to her son, Allan, Julie is survived by her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; and two granddaughters, Dana and Stephanie, all of whom reside in Auburn, WA. Julie is also survived by two brothers, Leo and Edward Gawlak, along with three sisters, Josephine, Najduch, Nellie Stanish and Anne Gibas; and a host of other friends and relatives.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will follow the Mass at the church Cemetery.

Joseph H. Volpe

WALLINGFORD -- Joseph H. Volpe, 78, of 27 Eaton Drive, formerly of New Haven, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. He was the husband of Anita Reynolds Volpe.

He was born Nov. 3, 1924, in New Haven, a son of the late Joseph and Rose Maisano Volpe. He was a past president of the New Haven Lions Club. Mr. Volpe owned and operated Volpe's Pharmacy in New Haven until 1975 when he moved to Hollywood, FL, he retired in 1994.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Wayne Volpe of Wallingford, and Joseph Volpe of Hollywood, FL; two brothers, Edmund Volpe of Staten Island, NY, and Stanley Volpe of Killingworth, CT; two grandchildren and several nieces.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Ave., North Haven. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the B. C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., Wallingford. It is suggested that gifts in his memory be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.

Virginia W. Anthony

MERIDEN -- Virginia W. Anthony, 84, of 845 Paddock Ave., wife of the late Michael Anthony, died on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Meriden Center. Born in Hartford on Jan. 27, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Theresa Winters Wilson. Mrs. Anthony had resided in Meriden most of her life and had graduated from Hartford Public High School.

She is survived by a daughter: Phyllis Currier of Meriden; three step-daughters: Jean Kozuck and her husband, Bobby of Ellington, Vera Luft and her husband, Al, and Lucille Gardener and her husband, Doug, all of Meriden; a son: Ralph Thompson and his wife, Barbara of Meriden; a step-son: Donald "Sparky" Anthony and his wife, Carol of Cheshire; and step-daughter-in-law: Nancy Anthony of Meriden. She is also survived by two special granddaughters: Debra Currier and Dawn Wolff, both of Texas ; 20 other grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her step-son, Michael Anthony Jr.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at 6 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, with the Rev. Perry Beaver officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday prior to the service from 3 to 6 p.m.

William L. Birks

ST. CLOUD, Fla. -- William L. Birks, son of the late William and Helen Birks, died Dec. 20, 2002, in St. Cloud, Fla. He was a resident of Meriden and Cheshire before his retirement. He was a Sheet Metal Instructor at Horace C. Wilcox Technical School in Meriden for years and had worked in the sheet metal trade all of his life.

He leaves one son, William L. Birks Jr. of Cheshire; one daughter, Deborah A. Frederick of Trotwood, Ohio; one granddaughter, Shana N. Birks of Trotwood, Ohio; two grandsons, William L. Birks III and Daniel Birks, both of Cheshire; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves a sister, Frances Zimmerman of St. Cloud, Fla. and two ex-wives, Agnes Tempe of Yalesville and Evelyn Birks of Naugatuck.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Fisk Funeral Home in St. Cloud

Romeo C. Orsatti

CORNING, N.Y. -- Romeo C. Orsatti, 78, formerly of Waterbury, died Dec. 27, 2002, in Corning N.Y. He was the husband of Carolyn (Salerno) Orsatti, formerly of Southington.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Rachael Hart of Painted Post, N.Y. and Nancy Carroll of Walpole, Mass.; five grandchildren; three brothers, Daniel Orsatti, Sr. of Wolcott, Hubert Orsatti of Waterbury and John Orsatti of Thomaston; two sisters, Esther Barone and Anita Mariano, both of Waterbury.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9956.

Dorothy Steele

TORRINGTON -- Dorothy (Goss) Steele, 79, of 94 Peck Rd., Torrington, formerly of 28 Dee Ave., South Meriden, wife of the late Herbert E. Steele, died on Friday evening, Dec. 27, 2002, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington after a brief illness.

Born in Meriden on May 9, 1923, the daughter of the late Emil and Catherine O'Rourke Goss, she had resided in Meriden for most of her life prior to moving to Torrington a year ago. Mrs. Steel attended local Meriden schools and was employed by Westfield Manor and Masonic Home and Hospital for a number of years. In addition, she worked for a number of years at Undercliff Hospital in Meriden in the Tuberculosis Unit. She was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Angels Church, South Meriden.

Mrs. Steele is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia Gariepy of Rocky Hill, Mary and Bill Dube of South Meriden, and Donna and Ray Ricker of Torrington, with whom she resided; one son and daughter-in-law, Staff Master Sergeant Paul and Evonne Steel of Guam; 13 grandchildren, David Steele, Cathy Buonnani, Ronald and Laurie Gariepy, Jason and Shawna, Barrett and Nicholas Steel, Heather and Joe Dube, Raymond, Michael and Brittany Ricker; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Evelyn and Everett Hicks of California and Shirley Hicks of Florida; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Lorraine Goss of Cheshire and Richard and Emmajean Goss of Oklahoma; also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Herbert Edward Steele of Meriden; a brother, Paul Goss of Maryland; and two nephews.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Church, 915 Main St,, South Meriden for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Robert C. Lucente

FT. PIERCE, Fla. -- Robert C. Lucente, 73, of North Dove Tail Drive, Ft. Pierce, Fla., formerly of Meriden, husband of Leonilde DiMattia Lucente, died Saturday evening, Dec. 28, 2002, in Meriden, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Pratola Pelingua Province of Aquila Abbruzzo, Italy, on Dec. 10, 1929, the son of the late Dominico Antonio and Maria Dominca Petrella Lucente, he came to America on July 20, 1947. Robert and Leonilde resided in Meriden for some 37 years. He attended Laurel Business School in Meriden and worked for New Departure, a division of General Motors for 12 years. Later he opened a family-operated furniture business with his wife and children located at the Lincoln Plaza in Meriden and later relocated Lucente's Furniture and Sleep Shop to Berlin. Mr. Lucente was head soccer coach for Mattatuck Community College in Waterbury, and was past Vice President and Recording Secretary of the Pratolana Mutual Benefit Society of Hartford. In 1984, Mr. Lucente and his wife moved to Florida. Mr. Lucente served as President of the Board for the Savannahs of Ft. Pierce, Fla. He was a parishioner of Mt. Carmel Church, Meriden

Besided his wife, Leonilde, he is survived by a son, James D. Lucente of Plainville; a daughter and son-in-law, Lydia C. and Antonio Stellato of Meriden; five grandchildren, Matthew and Lisa Marie Stellato, Shana, Dustin and Mandy Lucente. He was predeceased by a sister, Anna DiLoreto; and by two brothers, Umberto and Florideo Lucente.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 109 Goodwill Ave., Meriden. Entombment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to CT. Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.

Frank P. Dondero

WALLINGFORD -- Frank P. Dondero, 94, of 35B Wharton Brook Drive, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at CT Hospice in Branford. He was the husband of the late Anastasia (Nancy) Chvisuk Dondero.

He was born in Wallingford, Dec. 7, 1908, a son of the late Salvatore and Rose Cavagnaro Dondero. Until his retirement, he worked at the Stanley Judd Company. He was a communicant of the Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Dondero and his wife, Joy, of Clinton and Jupiter, Fla., Donald Dondero and his wife, MaryAnne of Wallingford; four grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa and Michael Palma of Cheshire, Kathleen and Jeffrey Monnes of West Hartford, Mark and Tami Dondero of Plantsville and Rick Dondero of Springfield, Mass.; six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha and Jackson Palma, Caroline and Christopher Monnes and Katherine Dondero; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred S. Dondero; two sisters, Lena Boynton and Rose Wactowski; and a grandson, Michael T. Dondero.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. There are no calling hours. If friends so desire, gifts in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
