Rachel L. Norris
MERIDEN -- Rachel L. Crossett Norris, 87, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Meriden, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 in the Life Care Center of Paradise Valley, in Las Vegas. She was the beloved wife of the late Gerald Everett "Jed" Norris.
Mrs. Norris was born in Portland Maine, Sept. 6, 1915, a daughter of the late Herbert and Gertrude Thomas Crossett, and had been a resident of Meriden for many years before moving to Las Vegas in 1999. She had been employed in the classified office of the Record-Journal in Meriden for many years until her retirement, and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Meriden.
She is survived by her three daughters, Jean E. Dansereau and her husband, Roy Dansereau of Las Vegas, Nev., Marcia L. Jones of Naugatuck and Gail M. Norris of Boynton Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Laurye J. Nestohr, Nancy A. Handy, Debra L. Cupani, Maura L. Enright, Kurt R. Wehmann, Robert S. Gritz, Tracy L. Vooris and Brenda A. Miller; nine great-grandchildren, Heather A. Vooris, Dustin S. Gritz, Brandon M. Gritz, Jessica A. Miller, Emily Handy, Jake Handy, Victoria Nestohr, Lassandria Nestohr, Azouria Nestohr; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 11 sisters and brothers.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Yalesville Funeral Home 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the First Congregational Church of Meriden, 62 Colony St., Meriden. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. It is the suggestion of her family that gifts in her memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice.
Rocco J. Vumbaco
WALLINGFORD -- Rocco J. Vumbaco Jr., 44, husband of the late Sharon Kim Polk Vumbaco of Highland Ave., Wallingford, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003 at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Born in Meriden, June 5, 1958, he was a lifelong resident of Wallingford. A meat cutter, he had been employed at the Suburban Market in Wallingford, a Vumbaco family owned business, for many years, and later had been employed by the Stop and Shop Company, Bozzuto's Foods Inc., and Rite Portion Meats.
He is survived by his daughter, Crystal M. Vumbaco of North Haven; his mother, Mildred K. Bartley Vumbaco Slate (Mrs. Michael) of Bend, Ore.; three brothers, Joseph A. Vumbaco and his wife, Linda Vumbaco of Denver, Colo., James M. Vumbaco and his wife, Beth Vumbaco of Wallingford and Kenneth L. Vumbaco and Cathy Baumgarte of Sparks, Nev.; his sister-in-law, Adria and her husband, Michael Carabetta of North Haven; and five nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Former Wallingford Mayor Rocco J. Vumbaco Sr.
Funeral services at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, will be private. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery

Lois C. Benson
BERLIN -- Lois Carolyn (Fowler) Benson of East Berlin, beloved wife of Clifton A. "Kip" Benson, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at Haven Healthcare Center, Rocky Hill, following a long illness.
She was born in Middletown on Oct. 31, 1919, daughter of the late Ruby and Fred Fowler of Middletown. Lois was a graduate of Middletown High School, class of 1937 and was the Apple Blossom Queen at Lyman Orchards in 1937. She was a member of Berlin Congregational Church and a former member of its Women's Federation. She was also a former member of Glastonbury Hills Country Club, Berlin Free Library, Berlin Historical Society and was a Welcome Wagon Hostess in Berlin for many years. She also volunteered at the Jerome Home in New Britain. Lois was a tireless assistant to her husband, Kip, during his years of calling and teaching square dance. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a caring friend to many. She enjoyed skiing, golf and traveling with her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Stanley Solek Jr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Gail Benson; and three grandchildren, Douglas Solek, Kylee Solek and Lindsay Benson, all of East Berlin; she also leaves a sister, Edith Trischman of Middlefield; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth Fowler; his sister, June F. Chadsey; and a grandson, Keith B. Solek.
Funeral services will be private and there are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 3 p.m. at Berlin Congregational Church, 878 Worthington Ridge, Berlin. Elmer F. Dow
WALLINGFORD -- Elmer F. Dow, 90, husband of Marita (Maynard-Papallo) Dow of 65 Ashlar Village, who died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002. His Memorial Service will be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Ray Cooley on Saturday, Jan. 11, in the Chapel of the Masonic Hospital, Wallingford at 11 a.m., all are invited. Interment will be held for the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden.
Kathleen Dow
MERIDEN -- Kathleen (Bulluss) Dow, 72, of 7 Webb St., South Meriden, wife of Kenneth F. Dow, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at MidState Medical Center after a short illness.
Born in Meriden on Nov. 30, 1930, the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Bulluss, she had resided in Meriden all her life. She attended local schools and graduated from Meriden High School in 1949. Mrs. Dow was employed by Jenny K. Cleaners and Holy Angels Church for over 20 years. While President of the Meriden Council of Catholic Women, she was a board member of Connecticut Council of Catholic Women, Archdiocese of Hartford. She was a member of many church organizations including, Holy Angels Pro-Life Ministry, Holy Angels Choir, Holy Angels Women's Club and member and past president of the Legion of Mary. Mrs. Dow taught CCD, served as Chairman of the annual Christmas Creche dedication, and was a member and past president of Church Women United of Meriden. She was a parishioner of Holy Angels Church, and was active in Young at Heart Club, and served as both a Lector and Minister of the Eucharist at Holy Angels Church.
Besides her husband, Kenneth, she is survived by two daughters, Mary Harrison and her husband, David of Rockland, Maine and Anne Dow of Meriden; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Alisa Dow of Utah and Timothy and Colleen Dow of Meriden; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Raymond Fournier of Clinton; one brother, John Bulluss of Washington State; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Kathleen; a son, Thomas William; and a sister, Elizabeth Bulluss.
The funeral will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Alfred R. Carolyn Elliott
SOUTHINGTON -- Carolyn Elliott, 86, of formerly of 60 Meriden Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Justin A. Elliott and the late James F. Stewart.
Born on July 9, 1916 in New Britain, she was the daughter of the late Clayton and Ann Cranley James. A graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford, she had worked as a school nurse at North Center School in Southington. She often volunteered with the American Red Cross at Blood Drives and was an active parishioner at St. Thomas Church.
Mrs. Elliot is survived by two sons, Robert and his wife, Catherine Stewart of Southington and James and his wife, Cynthia Stewart of Houston, Texas ; a daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Gordon Carlson of North Kingstown, R.I.; a brother, Richard James of New Britain; sisters, Alice Hurlburt of West Hartford and Mary Krenn of New Britain; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Clayton James; and a sister Anna "Verna" James.
Funeral will be Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from the Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church for a Mass at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Robert B. Farrell Sr.
SOUTHINGTON -- Robert B. Farrell Sr., 84, of 503 Carriage Drive died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mildred (O'Donnell) Farrell.
Born in New Haven on August 16, 1918, he was the son of the late James D. and Ethel (Hempstead) Farrell. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in northern France. He received the good conduct and victory medals and Eastern and American Theater Ribbons. He was employed by the former New Haven, Penn Central and Conrail Railroads for 43 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Robert B. Farrell Jr. of Hampstead, N.H.; a daughter, Noreen White of Wallingford; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; and a brother, Russell Farrell of Hamden. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Jean Farrell.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N, Main St. in Southington to St. Dominic Church, Flanders Road for a Mass at 10 a.m. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in all Saints Cemetery

Anne McCarthy
MERIDEN -- Anne McCarthy, 83, a resident of the St. Elizabeth Center of the Curtis Home since May of 2001 and formerly of the Greenery of Cheshire for 22 years, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at the MidState Medical Center.
She was born in Waterbury, May 30, 1919, a daughter of the late Otto and Agnes Bolinska Reed. Anne was employed for over 25 years as a department manager with the W.T. Grant Co., and later worked for many years as a nurses aide in Cheshire and Meriden. While a resident of the nursing home she was very active with the residents council, serving as president and vice-president, and was always concerned about the rights of nursing home residents. Anne was an avid bingo player and New York Mets fan. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life and she always put them first. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.
She leaves two daughters, Sharon A. Pelon of Waterbury and Noreen A. Sciola of Meriden; three grandchildren, Sherri-Anne M. Sciola of Southington, Chief Petty Officer of the U.S. Navy, Carl P. Sciola IV, stationed at Oceania, Va., and Krista L. Sciola of Meriden; four great-grandchildren, Alexis Marie Sciola-Carter of Meriden, Jasmine, Jordan and Jaylin Sciola of Oceania, Va.; a sister, Irene G. Carmody of Cheshire; a brother, Edwin R. Reed of Cheshire; a niece, Maureen Sica of Cheshire; two nephews, John and James Carmody, both of Cheshire; and several great-nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves her second family, the caregivers from the Curtis Home and the Greenery, who took such wonderful care of her.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Patrick J. Petronico Sr.
WALLINGFORD -- Patrick Joseph Petronico Sr. went home to be with his Lord Monday, Jan. 5, 2003.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., June 12, 1941, he was the son of the late Joseph and Marie Donnley Petronico, and predeceased by his brother Joey. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Petronico was well respected by those he worked with for over 16 years at Thurston Foods of Wallingford, as well as the 10 years he spent working for the Stop & Shop Co.
Mr. Petronico is survived by his wife, Alice Kelsey Petronico; his three sons and three grandchildren, Patrick and Jennifer Petronico Jr. of Paris, Tenn., Anthony and Christal Petronico of Wallingford and Timothy Petronico, Justin, Dominick, and Kelly of Brick, N.J.; also his four brothers and five sisters, Michael Petronico of Marlton, N.J., Louis Petronico of Nutley, N.J., Timothy Petronico of South Plainfield, N.J., Angelo Petronico of Jersey City, N.J., Rosemary Matthews of Red Bank, N.J., Josephine Lewis of Jersey City, N.J., Sue Barbaro of Cape Coral, Fla., Terry Abbott of Roseville, Calif., and Mary Baurer of Jersey City, N.J.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service held on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Heritage Baptist Church, 161 South Whittlesey Ave., Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in his memory be sent to the Heritage Baptist Academy, for a student Scholarship in his memory, 161 South Whittlesey Ave., Wallingford, CT 06492. Catharine Beaumont
WALLINGFORD -- Catharine Norton Beaumont, 90, wife of Robert Beaumont of 103 Harrison Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven.
She was born on July 23, 1912, in Wallingford. Mrs. Beaumont had been a bookkeeper with the Beaumont Dairy Farm in Wallingford for many years before her retirement. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wallingford. She had attended the First Baptist Church of Wallingford with her husband for many years and was active for over 60 years with the Church Guild, having served as president on a number of occasions. She also was active for many years in the Wallingford Garden Club, where she served as president in 1972 to 1973, and was a former member of the Wallingford Grange.
In addition to her husband, Robert, she is survived by a son, Robert N. Beaumont and his wife, Noma of Wallingford; three grandchildren, Catharine Beaumont of North Haven, Tamzen Kelly and her husband, Walter Jr. of North Haven and Robert G. Beaumont of Wallingford; a great-grandson, Walter (Trey) Kelly III. She was predeceased by two sisters, Janice Schmidt and Ruth Lanson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford, CT 06492. Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral for visitation. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery
