Katherine D. Rutka

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Katherine D. Rutka, 97, wife of the late Alexander Rutka, died on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Nanticoke, Pa., on March 4, 1905, the daughter of the late Ladislaus and Stefania Cytnerowski Dolaczynski, she had resided in Meriden most of her life. Mrs. Rutka was educated in Nanticoke schools and employed by New Departure-Hyatt Division of General Motors for many years retiring in 1973. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Sophie Zadroga of Colchester, Frances Collins of North Carolina and Josephine Rutka of Meriden; one son, John Rutka of Meriden; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Alexander Jr.; two sisters, Sophie Zazetski and Helen Krzywicki; and one brother, Michael Dolaczynski.

The funeral was held on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

The pallbearers were: John Rutka Jr., William Rutka and Martin Rutka, grandsons; Jay Churchill, Steven Miele and Michael Struchowski. Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Stanislaus Church, 82 Akron St., Meriden for a Memorial Mass or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.

Mary V. Benigni

MERIDEN -- Mary V. (Tonidandel) Benigni, 96, of Meriden, wife of the late Joseph Benigni, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at Coccomo Memorial Health Care Center after a brief illness.

Born in Fai Della Paganella, Italy on Dec. 6, 1906, the daughter of the late Miradio and Theresa Tonidandel, she came to this country in 1929, and had resided in Meriden since 1933. Mrs. Benigni was employed by New Departure, Hyatt Bearing Division of General Motors, for some six years. She was a member of the Council of Catholic Women and the Founder's Club of the North Italian Home Club, and an avid card and bingo player known as "Mama" throughout the bingo circuit. She always took great pride in her family, friends, garden and home. Mrs. Benigni was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church.

She is survived by a son, Henry "Red Peck" Tonidandel and his wife, Patricia; a daughter, Theresa "Terry" Stimpson Blankenship; grandsons, David J. Stimpson and Dennis M. Sullivan, all of Meriden; four great-grandchildren, Amanda and Nicole Sullivan and Chelsea and Ian Sullivan; a sister, Miretta Endrizzi of Fai Della Paganella, Italy; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Pean and a sister, Gina, both of Italy; her son, James Tonidandel her first husband, Tita Tonidandel; and a grandson, John L. Sullivan.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the Mass from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The family wishes to thank the staff of the 200 Wing at Coccomo and the Wallingford VNA & Hospice for the excellent care given to our mother.

Joseph J. Fuda

MERIDEN -- Joseph J. Fuda, 72, husband of Carmella Fusco Fuda of 47 Williams Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at the MidState Medical Center.

He was the past president of Fuda and Tiezzi Construction Company.

His funeral will be Saturday, Jan. 18, at Mount Carmel Church. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden. A more complete obituary will be available in Friday's edition of the Record-Journal.

Julius Kowalski

OCEAN SHORES, Ore. -- Julius "Joseph Kowalski passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002.

Joe was born in Wallingford, June 28, 1921, the eldest son of Julius and Electa Kowalski. Joe has two brothers, Robert and Bill; and five sisters, Lorraine, Joyce, Lois, Pat and Gloria, all of whom are from Connecticut.

During World War II, Joe served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Otis in the Pacific Theater. It was in 1942 that Joe met Luciel Marshall at Lake Tahoe, Calif., and shortly after, they were married in Reno Neva on Oct. 1, 1942. Following the War, Joe and Lucy settled in the Portland, Ore., area where Joe worked in the transportation industry. A retired Teamster, he and Lucy moved to Ocean Shores, Ore., in 1998.

Joe and Lucy are the parents of the four children, Noel of Portland, Ore., Diane Santoro of Ocean Shores, Ore., Linda Scott of Ocean Shores, Ore., and Randy who is deceased. They are the grandparents of eight grandchildren; and the great-grandparents of 10 great-grandchildren.

Joe had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed music and he was an avid fisherman and boater. He was a member of the Portland Elks and the Parkrose Masoni Lodge. Before moving to Ocean Shores, joe was the head of transportation at the Shriners Children's Hospital of Portland.

Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He touched many lives -- he will be missed by all who knew him.

A memorial Mass will be held Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection, Wallingford.

Edward S. Lenik

SOUTHINGTON -- Edward S. Lenik, 87, beloved husband of Virginia Prince Lenik of the Plantsville section of Southington, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at New Britain General Hospital.

Born in Meriden, July 18, 1915, he was the son of the late Stanley and Yadwiga Swiantek Lenik. Mr. Lenik was a longtime resident of Plantsville, the night manager of General Electric in Plainville and a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Maritime Service.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, James Lenik of Plainville and Wayne Lenik of Unionville; a daughter, Linda Saren of East Hampstead, N.H.; a sister, Jeanette White of Holliston, Mass.; four step-children, Judith Peck of Plainville, Patricia Souza and Steven Comeau, both of East Haven and James Comeau of Charleston, WVa.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral for Mr. Lenik will be held on Friday, Jan. 17, at 9:15 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. The family requests that donations in be half of Edward's memory be made to St. Stanislaus School, 81 Akron St., Meriden, CT 06450.

M. Lucille McNulty

WALLINGFORD -- M. Lucille Fritz McNulty, 93, of Wallingford formerly of Meriden, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 in the Regency House of Wallingford. She was the beloved wife of the late William T. McNulty Sr.

Born in the Yalesville section of Wallingford, June 8, 1909, a daughter of the late Frank R. and M. Antoinette L'Ecuyer Fritz, she had been a graduate of the Yalesville School and Lyman Hall High School, class of 1929, and had earned her Associate Degree from St. Lawrence College. She had interned and worked as a Dietitian for the St. Francis Hospital in Hartford prior to her marriage in 1935. She had later been employed by the former Meriden-Wallingford Hospital as Assistant Food Service Director and Therapeutic Dietitian from 1955 until her retirement in 1974. She had been a member of the Meriden-Wallingford Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers, the Meriden Council of Catholic Women, the Columbiettes, and had been a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church for 30 years. She had been a Meriden resident for many years until her illness when she returned to Wallingford and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church.

Mrs. McNulty is survived by her four daughters, Mary L. and her husband, Charles Thuilot of Wallingford, Dominican Sister Ellen McNulty of St. Ann Parish, New Britain, Claire and her husband, James Butler of Fort Collins, Colo., and Maureen McMullen of Windsor, Colo.; her son, William T. McNulty Jr., and his wife, Kathy McNulty of Wallingford; her nine grandchildren and their spouses, James P. Butler, Daniel A. Butler, Cathleen McMullen, Thomas W. McMullen, Colleen Contreras, Lisa Tuscano, Kelly Wolcheski, Shannon Larson and Sean P. McNulty; her 12 great-grandchildren; her sister, Eloise (Mrs. Charles P.) Kingsland of Yalesville; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Marty Fritz of Yalesville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Fritz and his wife Dorothy Fritz; and her brother-in-law, Charles P. Kingsland.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m.. Interment will be in St. Laurent Cemetery in Meriden. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Holy Trinity School Needy Student Fund, 68 North Colony Rd, Wallingford, CT. 06492 or to the Alzheimer's Association 2911 Dixwell Ave, No. 104, Hamden, CT, 06518.

Adalberto Orozco

EAST HAVEN -- Adalberto Orozco Sr., 59, husband of Delsa Gonzalez Orozco of 173C Thompson St, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003.

Mr. Orozco was born in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico on April 23, 1943, a son of Maria Julia Lopez Orozco and the late Cesario Orozco. He was the pastor of Centro Cristiano Restauracion Church of New Haven, and was also a machine operator for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of New Haven and East Hartford for the past four years. He previously worked for the Textron Lycoming Co. of Stratford for 23 years.

He is also survived by two daughters, Ivette Orozco of Bridgeport and Tanya Vidal of New Haven; two sons, Adalberto Orozco Jr. of East Haven and Roberto Orozco of Wallingford; three sisters, Aida Maldonado, Dolores Queiros and Carmen Torres, all of Bridgeport; five grandchildren, Carlos, Jessica, Nicholas James and Vanessa Orozco and Alexis Vidal; and one great-grandson, Alex Orozco.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m. in the Second Star of Jacob Church, 201 Chapel St., New Haven. Burial will be follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. Family and friends may call at the church, Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Evening service will begin at 7 p.m. Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven CT.

John W. Schaffer Jr.

SOUTHINGTON -- John Winter Schaffer Jr., 24, of 31 Middle St., Lyndonville, Vt., and 387 Andrews St., Southington died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 in Lyndonville, Vt.

John was born on Oct. 27, 1978 in New Britain, the son of John Winter Schaffer Sr. and Mari (Bitel) Schaffer. A lifelong Southington resident, John was a 1997 graduate of Southington High School where he participated in Lacrosse and football. John had been a member of the National Ski Patrol since the age of 14 at Mount Southington. He had completed four years at Lyndon State College and was serving his internship in ski area management at Burke Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he leaves a brother, Matt Schaffer of Southington; and his maternal grandparents, Helyne and Walter Bitel of Kensington.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Dominic Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial Contributions may be made to Eastern Division Memorial Fund, c/o Mt. Southington Ski Patrol, P.O. Box 347 Southington, CT 06489.

Emily Watterworth

SOUTHINGTON -- Emily (Spierto) Watterworth, formerly of 21 Garden Drive, died Jan. 5, 2003 at the Tandem Heatlth Care. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Watterworth.

She was born in Waterbury, daughter of the late Anthony and Rosina Spierto. She was the owner and operator of the former Town and Country Diner in Southington from 1960 until 1977. Mrs. Watterworth was a member of the Plainville Senior Center and the bowling and chorus Group.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Watterworth of Waterbury, Henry Watterworth of California; two daughters, Karen Grover of Plantsville and Marguerite McEnerney and her husband, Robert of Waterbury; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, John and Marshall Watterworth.

The funeral will be Tuesday, Jan 21, 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Dominic Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling hours will be Monday 5 to 7 p.m.
