Edward J. Scott

SOUTHINGTON -- Edward J. Scott, 81, of 63 Paul Terrace died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at Ridgewood Convalescent Home. He was the husband of Angelina (Melillo) Scott.

Born April 27, 1921 in Yonkers, N.Y., son of the late Percy and Agnes (Kennedy) Scott. He had retired 19 years ago from General Iron & Welding Co. in Meriden. Mr. Scott was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army-Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion, the D.A.V. Mr. Scott was a model airplane and train enthusiast. Mr. Scott was a parishioner of Mary Our Queen Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, James E. Scott of Clinton and John D. Scott of West Barnstable, Mass.; a daughter, Kathleen Smedberg of Plantsville; a brother, Roy T. Scott of Bristol; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Scott, Michael Scott, Gregory Smedberg and Laura Smedberg; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Thursday 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to Mary Our Queen Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be with military honors at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday 5 to 8 p.m.

Alice W. Brown

WALLINGFORD -- Alice W. Brown, 92, formerly of 65 W. Dayton Hill Road and 36 Loring Court, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Masonic Healthcare Center. She was the wife of the late Harold H. Brown.

She was born Sept. 22, 1910, in Rockland Lake, NY, a daughter of the late Charles and Lena Franz Walter. Until her retirement, she was a registered nurse at the former Meriden-Wallingford Hospital.

She was predeceased by a son, W. Douglas Brown; three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. It is suggested that gifts in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., is in charge of arrangements.

Stanley E. Carney

CHESHIRE -- Stanley E. Carney, 83, of 971 Allen Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at the Cedar Lane Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Waterbury. He was the husband of Hazel (Munson) Carney.

Mr. Carney was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Springfield, MA, a son of the late Edward and Nellie (Madden) Carney and had lived in Cheshire since 1954. A veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Force, he worked as plant superintendent of Hildreth Press in Forestville, CT, for 18 years. He retired in 1990 after 20 years as vice president of Crosier and Race Business Forms of Hartford.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Douglas O. Carney and his wife, Nancy, of Cheshire, and Steven D. Carney of Martinez, CA; a sister, Virginia Spencer of Rocky Hill; two grandsons, Jeffrey M. and Jonathan A. Carney, both of Cheshire.

Funeral services and burial in the Cheshire Street Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. Friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at the Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St.

Zilda Bauchman

SOUTHINGTON -- Zilda Cianci Bauchman, beloved aunt and great-aunt, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, with her family at her side, at the Masonicare Center in Wallingford following a short illness. She was the widow of Louis A. Bauchman.

Mrs. Bauchman was born in Meriden on Aug. 2, 1914, the daughter of the late Carmela (Baldessone) and Ernesto Cianci of Meriden. She was a resident of Southington, before moving to Masonicare in 2001. She is predeceased by her brothers, Rinaldo, Americo and Albert; and sisters, Esther Cianci, Maria Dioguardi and Anna Mozzicato. Mrs. Bauchman was previously employed by the International Silver Company in Meriden as a timekeeper. She was a proud member of the former Grace Baptist Church of Meriden, a ministry her parents helped found for the Italian community in Meriden. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Southington upon the closing of Grace Baptist.

Mrs. Bauchman leaves her beloved niece and nephew, Ted and Norma Cabata of Southington; a grandniece and nephew, Alan and Penny Jonas of New Britain, who helped care for her even as she passed away to be with her Savior; she also leaves nephews and nieces, Antoinette and Robert Grillo of West Hartford, John Dioguardi, Arthur and Lucy Dioguardi of Meriden, Louis Dioguardi Jr. of New Bedford, Mass., Ronald and Donna Dioguardi of Punta Gorda, Fla.; great-nephew and his wife, Rudolph and Rita Cabata; Zilda is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Zilda was an aunt who loved homemaking and being with her family. She was always very generous and supportive.

The family is grateful to the Masonicare Family, especially Ramage 6, and to Hospice of Masonicare for their care. Her family is especially thankful to Zilda's church family for their prayer support and love.

Arrangements have been made with the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. A memorial worship service will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Southington. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Bauchman's memory may be made to the First Baptist Church of Southington, 581 Meriden Ave., Southington, CT 06489.

Mary A. Cannavan

WALLINGFORD -- Mary A. Donahue Cannavan, 90, of Mohawk Drive, Wallingford, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at the Curtis Home in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Edwin V. Cannavan.

Mrs. Cannavan was born in Derby, Oct. 26, 1912, a daughter of the late Francis and Helena McEvoy Donahue, and had been a Wallingford resident since 1956. She had been employed in the office of the Town of Wallingford Welfare Department until her retirement, and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Yalesville.

She is survived by her daughter, Jan Cannavan of Boston, Mass.; her sister, Nancy Shine of West Haven; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Francis Donahue.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9 to 10:15 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, where a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 382 Hope Hill Road, Yalesville.

Donald L. Hahn

WALLINGFORD -- Donald L. Hahn, 51, dear husband and best friend of Carol Staugaard Hahn, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in New Haven, April 14, 1951, a son of Eleanor MacKenzie Hahn of Hamden and the late Raymond J. Hahn Sr., he had been a Wallingford resident for 8 years. He was the proprietor of D.L. Hahn Landscaping of Wallingford for 20 years. He has left pieces of himself in landscapes, patios and gardens all over Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He loved motorcycles, cars and hockey, and had volunteered as a youth hockey coach in Wallingford for several years. He dreamed of racing vintage cars and owning a nursery and Christmas tree farm. He will be dearly missed.

Besides his wife and mother, Don is survived by his stepson, Jesse Staugaard of Wallingford; his sister, Beverly Booze of Hamden; his brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Linda Hahn of Wallingford; his father and mother-in-law, who loved him like a son, Burt and Ruth Staugaard of Madbury, N.H.; his sister-in-law and her husband, Betsy and Ken Cloutier and their children of Warren, Mass.; his brother-in-law and his wife, Peter and Aida Staugaard and their children of Santa Monica, Calif.; his brother-in-law, John Staugaard of Branford; his nieces, Debbie and her husband, Scott and godson, Scott, all of Hamden, and Lisa Pelletier of Southington; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends; and his dog, Scooter.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. with Rev. William Lee, pastor of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of New Haven, officiating. Interment will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Development office, Yale-New Haven Hospital, 20 York St., New Haven, CT 06510 for use in the Medical ICU.

Ellen F. Meyer

SOUTHINGTON -- Ellen F. Meyer, 87, formerly of 25 Old Turnpike Road, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at the Summit in Plantsville. She was the wife of the late Ernest A. Meyer.

Born in Meriden on Jan. 30, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Sarah Flanagan Oefinger. She had been employed at King's Department Store and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Meriden.

She is survived by three daughters, Theresa Pierce of Guilford, Susan and Nicholas Hemmer of Maine and Frances and Donald Stevens of Florida; two sons, John and Patricia Meyer of New York and Stanislaus and Diana Jamrock of Las Vegas, Nev.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two very dear friends, Marie Kowalczyk and Jennie Jordan. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Jaworski; and a brother, John Oefinger.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. The Rev. David Brinkley will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Ellen's family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at The Summit in Plantsville. Their loving care and concern for Ellen did not go unnoticed, and we would like to say "thank you all."

Scott A. LaFontaine

MERIDEN -- Scott A. Lafontaine, 44, beloved husband of Pamela Pierson Lafontaine of Winter St., Meriden, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford.

Born in Meriden, Feb. 3, 1958, a son of Richard J. Lafontaine Sr. and Francine Bower Lafontaine of Wallingford, he had been a lifelong resident. He attended local schools and was employed by the Fosdick Corporation of Meriden for many years. He owned and maintained his own personal "Bird Sanctuary" and cared for his three dogs, Ashley, Merlin, and Lady Jane.

Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by his stepsons, Michael Paine and his wife, Erica and their son, Dylan of Meriden and Timothy Wendell of Glens Falls, N.Y.; his four sisters, Cheryl Moore and her husband, Leigh of Wallingford, Wendy LaRose and her husband, William of Waldorf, Md., Laurel Hazlett and her husband, Wayne of South Berwick, Maine and Rhonda Dattilo and her husband, Mark of Southington; his brother, Richard J. Lafontaine Jr. of Holyoke, Mass.; his eight nieces, Paula Hazlett-Dyer, Melissa Hazlett, Renee Amato, Jennifer Amato, Stephanie Amato, Shelby Lynn Dattilo, Aubrey E. LaRose and Jaime E. Moore; his two nephews, David M. LaRose and Christopher L. Moore; and two grand nieces, Ryleigh Grace and Avery Faith Dyer.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Wallingford Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in the name of Scott A. Lafontaine, may be sent to the Meriden Humane Society, 540 Oregon Road., Meriden, CT 06451.

Maria McGibbon

SOUTHINGTON -- Maria Concetta (Barbato) Viele McGibbon, 77, of 500 Pleasant St., died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at Bradley Memorial Hospital.

Born in Bonea, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Luigia (Barbato) Barbato. She was employed by the Bruce Manufacturing Co. of Plantsville. She was also employed by N.B.T. as a School Bus Monitor and was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Terese Giuliani; two brothers, Francisco Barbato and his wife, Antonia, Angelo Barbato and his wife, Terese, all of Southington; three grandchildren, Mrs. Jodi-Lyn Wagner and her husband, Kevin of Bristol, Philip J. Giuliani and Krista Giuliani, both of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Assunta Palazzo; and a brother, Antonio Barbato.

The funeral will be held Monday 8:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church for a Mass at 9 a.m. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday 5 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice VNA, 33 East St., Plainville, CT 06062.
