Edward Thayer Clary
Edward Thayer Clary, a longtime New Canaan resident, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 71.
He died of a heart attack, according to his family.
Born Oct. 17, 1929, in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of the late Ernest Thayer and Marjorie Stewart Clary.
Mr. Clary graduated from Middlesex School in Concord, Mass., Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and Harvard Law School.
He was an attorney with Bristol-Myers Squibb in New York for almost 30 years and retired as vice president of tax, in 1995. During his career, he specialized in international taxation. He was a member of the International Fiscal Association and had a passion for languages and current events.
In retirement, Mr. Clary was treasurer of New Canaan's United Nations Day Committee and the Landmine Committee, which is dedicated to removing mines in Cambodia.
He was a member of the Senior Men's Club in New Canaan and the Ambassador's Roundtable at the Stamford World Affairs Forum.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Fesneau Clary of New Canaan; two daughters, Elizabeth Chow and Patricia Clary, both of New York; a brother, David Clary of Stamford; and two granddaughters.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at St. Mark's Church, Oenoke Ridge Road, New Canaan.
Burial is private.

Donald W. Mason
Donald W. Mason of Charlestown, R.I., a former Darien resident, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence, R.I. He was 58.
James W. Poretta
James W. Poretta, a resident of Stamford and Palenville, N.Y., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2001 at his home. He was 48.
Monsignor Joseph Sullivan
Monsignor Joseph Augustine Sullivan, retired pastor of St. Paul Church in Greenwich, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at Queen of the Clergy Priest's Retirement Residence in Stamford. He was 71.
Dorothea Zaffino DeFilippis
Dorothea Zaffino DeFilippis of Greenwich,
a former Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001 at Greenwich Hospital. She was 70.
She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family.
Born Feb. 17, 1930, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Pasquale and Laura Zaffino.
Mrs. DeFilippis graduated from Stamford High School and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Arnold College in Milford. She worked at her family's business, Lucas Printing Co. of Stamford.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph M. DeFilippis of Greenwich; a daughter, Debra A. Scandone of Hamden; two sons, Michael P. DeFilippis of Fairfield and Joseph E. DeFilippis of Greenwich; two sisters, Violet Nedley of Redding and Wanda Vodola of Newtown; a brother, Egidio Zaffino of Brookfield; and eight grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 8:20 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, and proceed to St. Mary's Church, 566 Elm St., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m.
Burial will follow in Queen of Peace Cemetery
in Stamford.
Myron "Mike" Silverstein
Myron "Mike" Silverstein, a lifelong resident of Providence, R.I., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. He was 72.
He died of cancer, according to his family.
Born July 13, 1928, in Providence, he was a son of the late Barney and Pearl Silverstein.
Mr. Silverstein attended Hope High School in Providence and the University of Rhode Island. He was owner and president of the Woonsocket News Co. in Woonsocket, R.I., before retiring in 1990.
He was a lifelong member of Temple Emanu-El in Providence. He served on the board of the Atlantic Coast Independent Distributors Association in Providence and was a member of Ledgemont Country Club. He was an avid golfer and member of the Rhode Island Seniors Golf Association.
He is survived by his wife, Honey Silverstein of Providence; two daughters, Lori Dorsey of Cranston, R.I., and Lynn Marks of Byfield, Mass.; a brother, Michael Silverstein of Lincoln, R.I.; a sister, Alice Fierstein of Stamford; and four grandchildren.
There are no calling hours.
A funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. today, Jan. 18, 2001 at Sugarman-Sinai Memorial Chapel, 458 Hope St., Providence.
Burial will follow in Lincoln Park Cemetery
in Warwick, R.I.
Sadie Israel David
Sadie Israel David, a Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001 at home. She was 94.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Feb. 22, 1906, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Meyer and Leah Ruth Alpert Israel.
Mrs. David was a retired bookkeeper and owner of Carrol Cut-Rate Store in Norwalk.
She is survived by two daughters, Leah David Valentine of Pikesville, Md., and Judith David Oppenheim of Stamford; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward David; three sisters, Frieda Marks, Dorothy Lynch and Minnie Elders; and four brothers, Jules Israel, Louis Israel, Samuel Israel and Harry Israel.
Shiva will be observed 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 18, and Saturday, Jan. 20; 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21; and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001 at the home of Philip and Judith Oppenheim, 37 Nottingham Drive, Stamford.
A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. today, Jan. 18, 2001 at Temple Sholom Cemetery
in Greenwich.

Frances E. Alexakos
Frances E. Alexakos, a Greenwich resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001 at home. She was 43.
She died of breast cancer, according to her family.
Born April 28, 1957, in Dublin, Ireland, she was the daughter of Michael and Sara Salley of Dublin.
Mrs. Alexakos moved to London while in her early 20s and worked for Lehman Brothers and Rothchilds Bank.
She and her husband, George Alexakos, moved to Greenwich in 1993. She was assistant to the vice chairman of Forbes magazine.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Mrs. Alexakos organized a support group at Greenwich Hospital for cancer patients and people with other life-threatening illnesses.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by a son, Alexander Alexakos; and four brothers, Gerry Salley and Iain Salley, both of Dublin, Michael Salley of the Isle of Man, U.K., and John Salley of Chicago.
There are no calling hours.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at Second Congregational Church, 139 E. Putnam Ave., Greenwich.
Burial is private.

Katharine Conley
Katharine Edwards Conley of Stamford, a former longtime Greenwich resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at Edgehill Senior Community in Stamford. She was 80.
Lena Nembhard
Lena Nembhard, a resident of Springfield, Mass., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at Mercy Hospital, Springfield. She was 81.
She died of heart failure, according to her family.
Born March 19, 1919, in St. Catherine, Jamaica, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Jane Brown Nembhard.
Ms. Nembhard was a member of the Church of God in Springfield.
She is survived by a son, Winston Bynnes of Jamaica; four daughters, Enid Williams, Dorothy Bodel and Joyce Clarke, all of Stamford, and Marlene Samuels of Jamaica; a sister, Mercy Nembhard of Springfield; and 25 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Alberta Nembhard and Eugena Nembhard.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 19, 2001 at Downer Funeral Home, 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at the funeral home.
Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Darien.
