Stella Milewski

Stella Milewski, 91, of East Main Street, Wallingford, died Sunday, February 23, 2003, at The Regency House in Wallingford.

Born in Wallingford, September 2, 1911, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Zajac Milewski she had been a lifelong resident.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Gere, and her three brothers, Anthony, John and Frank Milewski.

A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, at 10 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Wallingford. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, CT.

Mary Shanahan Slavin

MERIDEN -- Mary Shanahan Slavin 83, of Wall Street, Meriden, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at the Coccomo Memorial Healthcare Center in Meriden. She was the beloved wife of Lloyd C. Slavin, with whom she would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on March 5, 2003.

Born in Waterbury, May 19, 1919 a daughter of the late Dennis F. and Sarah Daly Shanahan she had been a lifelong Meriden resident. She had been the Executive Director of the Meriden Girls Club for many years until her retirement. She was a parishioner of St Rose of Lima Church in Meriden, a member of the Ladies Guild of the Parish, a member of the Meriden Council of Catholic Women and the Golden K. Association of the Meriden Kiwanis Club.

Besides her husband Lloyd, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane S. and Mark R. Johnson of Hebron; her grandchildren, Matthew, Amanda, Michael and Sara all of Hebron; her sister, Kathleen Shanahan Frederick of California; her sister-in-law, Ann Shanahan of WA; her nieces, Kathleen Frederick, Alison Bowers and Elizabeth Geiberger all of California, Elizabeth Shanahan of Indiana, Nandy Beauchamp of New York and Rykie Kelly of Washington ; her nephews, Dr. Edward C. Frederick, Jr. of New Hampshire, Dr. William R. Shanahan of Texas , Dr. Dennis Shanahan and Robert Shanahan both of California, and her faithful dog Molly. She was predeceased by her, infant son Dennis Slavin, a brother, COL William R. Shanahan, and a brother-in-law, Edward C. Frederick, Sr.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Rose of Lima Church in Meriden, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meriden. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Franciscan Home Care, P.O. Box 4001, Meriden, CT 06450.

Her family would like to extend their gratitude to the entire staff of Coccomo Memorial Healthcare Center and the Franciscan Home Care for their loving care of Mary.

Donald E. Woods Sr.

SOUTHINGTON -- Donald E. Woods Sr., age 74, formerly of Grove St. in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington following a long illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret Jones Woods. Born June 21, 1928 in Honey Pot, PA, he was the son of the late Charles and Sarah Schad Woods. Don was a Veteran of the Korean War having served in the U. S. Army and retired from the Connecticut D.O.T. 20 years ago. He is survived by two sons, Donald E. Woods Jr. of Bristol and Charles S. Woods of Southington; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marsha R. and Robert Padelli of New Britain and Bonita R. Woods of Southington; one sister, Janet DePaolo of Bristol; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and John Woods. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 10 a.m. at Plantsvlle Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Donald may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

Isadore Bezio

SOUTHINGTON -- Isadore Bezio, 64, of 107 Old State Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at New Britain General Hospital. He was the husband of Bessie (Clark) Bezio.

Born March 10, 1938, in Ausable Forks, N.Y, the son of the late Isadore and Rose (Murcray) Bezio. He had served for two years in the U.S Army. Mr. Bezio had worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in North Haven from 1964 to 1993 and also at Central Connecticut State University from 1993 to 2002. He was a parishioner of St. Dominic Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara and her husband, Robert Dubois, and Lisa Bezio, all of Southington; two brothers, James Bezio, Walter and his wife, Carol Bezio, of Broadalbin, N.Y; two sisters, Shirley Hoyt of Sprakers, N.Y., and Eleanor and her husband, Clarence Bobar, of Broadalbin, N.Y. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

A private funeral will be held at St. Dominic Church. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Assoc. 2550 US Highway 1, North Brunswick, NJ 08920, or the National Kidney Foundation; 920 Farmington Ave; West Hartford, CT 06107.

Ann K. Bober

WALLINGFORD -- Ann K. Sabota Bober 95, of Lake Street, Wallingford, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at the Middlesex Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Joseph B. Bober Sr.

Born in Wallingford, July 26, 1907, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Katherine Szczerba Sabota and had been a lifelong resident. She had been employed by American Cyanamid for many years until her retirement, and prior to that she was employed by the former International Silver Company for several years. She was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford.

She is survived by her sister, Eleanor (Mrs. Theodore) Damm of Wallingford; her grandchildren, Susan J. Marshall of Voluntown, June L Deptulski of Norwich, Joseph T. Bober of Middletown, Thomas S. Bober of Pomfret and James Bober of West Woodstock; her great grandchildren, Melissa Marshall, Christine Marshall, Joseph Contios, Michael Bober, Sarah Bober, Jesse Bober and Rachael Bober; her daughter-in-law, Lorraine T. Kiczuk Bober of Norwich, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Joseph B. Bober, Jr.; her sisters, Mary S. Steeves and Victoria Lacy; and brothers, John J. Sabota and Judge Francis R. Sabota.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS. Peter and Paul Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Wallingford. Gifts in her memory may be sent to SS. Peter and Paul Church, 139 N. Orchard St., Wallingford, CT 06492.

Beatrice Bonk

WALLINGFORD -- Beatrice Kasprzycki Bonk, 97, beloved wife of the late Walter J. Bonk to whom she was married for 73 years, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at the Skyview Center in Wallingford.

Born in Meriden, Sept. 13, 1905, a daughter of the late John and Anna Tarnowski Kasprzycki, she had been a Wallingford resident for many years. She was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford. She devoted her whole life to loving and caring for family, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her three daughters, Ann C. Monroe and Joan B. Focareto, both of Wallingford, and LaVerne McKenzie of Branford; her son and daughter-in-law, Henry W. and Maryann Bonk of Wallingford; her 13 grandchildren; her 11 great grandchildren; her two great great-grandchildren; her two brothers, Edward Kasprzycki and Chester Kasprzycki, both of Hamden; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, and seven brothers.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial, Thursday, Feb. 27, at 11:30 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church. Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Wallingford. There will be no calling hours. Gifts in her memory may be sent to SS. Peter and Paul Church, 139 N. Orchard St., Wallingford, CT 06492, or to the Skyview Center Recreation Fund, 35 Marc Dr., Wallingford, CT 06492.

Pearl Gradwell

MERIDEN -- Pearl Allen Gradwell, 95, of Metacomet Drive, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003. She was the widow of Edgar A. Gradwell, who died in 1984. She is survived by her daughter, Martha L. Gradwell of Meriden.

Mrs. Gradwell was born in Meriden, the daughter of the late Walter and Martha Robinson Allen, and was the granddaughter of the late Lewis Allen, who was one of the four founders of the Journal Publishing Company, predecessor of the Record-Journal, in 1886. Her father, Walter Allen, devoted his entire professional career to the newspaper retiring as managing editor. Mrs. Gradwell worked at the Meriden Journal for several years prior to her marriage in 1935.

Pearl Gradwell was a member of the Meriden Women's Club and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She graduated from Meriden High School in 1925 and attended the School of Practical Arts and Letters at Boston University.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., Meriden. Burial will be private in Walnut Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden, CT.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to The Meriden Soup Kitchen, c/o St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., Meriden, CT 06450, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Walter F. Grodzki

MERIDEN -- Walter F. Grodzki, 81, of Kesteven Court, entered into eternal rest Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at the Meriden Care Center. He combated a lengthy illness as he lived his life: with strength and dignity.

Born Nov. 6, 1921, in Adams, Mass., "Spike" was the son of the late John and Katherine (Wachala) Grodzki. Raised in Meriden, he attended St. Stanislaus School, and was trained as a tool and die maker at Wilcox Technical School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946, in the European Theatre of Operations. Spike was committed to his work as a tool and die maker. He worked at local factories, retiring at the age of 75 from the Meriden Manufacturing Co.

Spike is survived by his beloved Carol, his life's mate of almost 54 years; a daughter, Janice of Essex; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Dawn of Meriden; his grandchildren, Heidi of Albany, NY, Kaitlyn of Meriden, Brandon and Colin of Southington, and Justin of Meriden; his sister, Helen Grodzki of Meriden; his brother-in-law, Joseph Gaj of Meriden; and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Joseph and Stanley Grodzki; sisters, Sophie Gura, Joseph Gaj, Mary Shemkovitz and Wanda Grodzki. Spike was a faithful husband, a dedicated father and grandfather, devoted brother and loyal friend.

The funeral will be held at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, Meriden. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the Mid-State VNA and Hospice, 658 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450, or St. Stanislaus School, 81 Akron St., Meriden, CT 06450.
