Wilma Brafford
East Lyme — Wilma Kuhn Brafford, 81, of Esther Road, Scaly Mountain, N.C., formerly of Niantic, died Saturday at Highlands Nursing Home in Highlands, N.C.
A native of Hamilton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Norma Keyer Kuhn. She was the widow of Robert Rourke Brafford, who died in 1992. Mrs. Brafford was a homemaker. She was active in St. John's Episcopal Church in Niantic, where she was the head of the Altar Guild for many years.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Kirk Brafford of Potomac, Md., and Charles Brent Brafford of Scaly Mountain, N.C.; two brothers, Howard Kuhn of Cincinnati and Charles Kuhn of Atlanta; and a grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Bryant Funeral Home, Franklin, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Gloria Fox
New London — Gloria Mildred Fox, 73, formerly of 127 Hempstead St., died Monday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
She was born on March 23, 1928, in New London, the daughter of Harry and Mary Mallen Kaplan.
For many years, Mrs. Fox worked as a clerk in local department stores, the last being the former S.S. Kresge in New London.
She is survived by four sons, Ralph Clarkin of St. Ann, Mo., Gary Clarkin and Kenneth Clarkin, both of New London, and Mark Clarkin of Great Lakes, Ill.; two daughters, Barbara Hope of Norwich and Linda Chamizo of Waipio, Hawaii; two brothers, Tommy Kaplan of Middletown, N.Y., and Robert Kaplan of Springfield, Mass.; a sister, Thelma Mayer of Middletown, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London. There are no calling hours.
Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Hansen
Plainfield — Thomas A. Hansen, 86, of 74 Lisbon Road, died Thursday at Villa Maria Convalescent Home in Plainfield.
He was born Sept. 17, 1915, in Canterbury, the son of the late Olaf and Bodhild Handeland Hansen. In the 1930s, Mr. Hansen was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was last employed by the former Plastic Wire & Cable Co. of Jewett City. He had been employed as a carpenter in the area, and in New York. A lifelong resident of Canterbury, Mr. Hansen was one of the founding members of the Canterbury Volunteer Fire Department, and was a life member of the Griswold Fish & Game Club.
He is survived by a sister, Anna Slevin of Canterbury. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ernest and Hans Hansen; and a sister, Gertrude Simonsen.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Carey Cemetery in Canterbury. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canterbury Volunteer Fire Department, Canterbury CT 06331. Dougherty Brothers Funeral Home, 595 Norwich Road, Plainfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Clifford
Old Lyme — Arthur G. Clifford, 92, of Rohnert Park, Calif., formerly of Old Lyme, died Nov. 15, at home.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1909, in Orange, N.J., the son of Anstruther and Margaret Winston Clifford. He was the widower of Mildred Clifford, who died in 1998. Mr. Clifford was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. He lived in Old Lyme for 60 years, moving to California after the death of his wife.
He was active in the Old Lyme Congregational Church, as well as the original Old Lyme Junior-Senior High School building committee.
He is survived by a son, David Clifford of Pengrove, Calif.; a daughter, Ann Christian of Smithfield, Va.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were already held.
Neptune Society of Northern California, Chapel of Chimes, Santa Rosa, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Laura Strafaci
Westerly — Laura Grace Paul Strafaci, 72, formerly of Thomas Street, Charlestown, R.I., died Friday at the Westerly Health Center in Westerly.
Born on Jan. 24, 1929, in Stonington, she was the daughter of the late Elias and Rose Wanchal Paul. She was the wife of the late Armondo Strafaci.
Mrs. Strafaci was a seamstress, and also worked as a people greeter at the Westerly Wal-Mart.
She is survived by a son, Natale Strafaci of Charlestown, R.I.; two daughters, Josephine Bicknell of Charlestown, R.I., and Melodie Chase of West Kingston, R.I.; two sisters, Lillian Duwe of North Kingstown, R.I., and Jean Panciera of Westerly; and four grandchildren.
Private services were held in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, R.I.

Nicole Alger
East Lyme — Nicole Sue Alger, 33, of Hoopole Hill Road, Chester, granddaughter of Fran and George Davidson of Niantic, died Tuesday in Vermont.
She was born on June 24, 1969, in Middletown, the daughter of Calvin and Jill O'Dell Gladding of Chester. She was the wife of Edward Alger Jr.
Besides her husband, parents and maternal grandparents, she is survived by two brothers, Michael and Noah Gladding, both of Chester; and three sisters, Lisa Kryszat of Chester, Jennifer Lombardi of Deep River and Joanna Gladding of Chester.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Prospect Street, Essex. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Westbrook.
Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St., Centerbrook.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Shore Animal Welfare League, Box 1134, Westbrook CT 06498, or to the Eleanor Carlson Memorial Shelter, c/o Essex Savings Bank, Box 129, Essex CT 06426.

Earl Gardner Jr.
Griswold — Earl Thomas Gardner Jr., 49, of 41 Palmer Ave., Jewett City, died Friday at Roncalli Summit Health Care Center in Griswold.
Born on Jan. 13, 1952, in Norwich, he was the son of the late Earl T. and Margaret MacLachlan Gardner Sr.
Mr. Gardner was last employed as an addiction counselor for the Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
He enjoyed nature and music.
He is survived by a daughter, Heidi Fish of Westerly; three brothers, Gary W. Gardner and Kevin J. Gardner Sr., both of Old Saybrook, and George F. Gardner of Norwich; a sister, Lynda J. Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and a companion, Lorie Cassidy.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon Friday in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Broad Street, New London.
Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich, is in charge of arrangements.

Maria Jackson
Groton — Funeral arrangements have been completed for Maria Antonia Jackson, 66, of 300 Brandegee Ave., Unit 131, Groton, who died Wednesday morning at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
A memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m. today in the Community Room of the Avery Heights Apartments, 300 Brandegee Ave., Groton. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton, is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Modi
Griswold — Frances Yvonne Modi, 83, of Talcott Avenue, Jewett City, died Wednesday at the Carlton Nursing Home in Fairfield.
Born on July 29, 1918, in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Badway J. Badway and Nora Danyan Badway.
She married Robert E. Modi, Sr. in 1946, in Providence. He died on June 25, 1978.
For many years, Mrs. Modi and her husband were co-owners of the Modi Furniture Store in Jewett City.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Jewett City and its Polish Rosary Society.
She is survived by a son, Robert E. Modi II, of Los Angeles; two daughters, Nora Kurimai of Fairfield and Catherine Young of Bedford, N.H.; two sisters, Kaleemy Badway of Johnston, R.I., and Helen Joseph of Greenville, R.I.; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas J. Modi; two sisters, Margaret Isaac and Juliet Abraham; and a brother, John J. Badway.
The funeral will assemble at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jewett City Leffler Funeral Home, 30 N. Main St., Jewett City, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lisbon.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Rita Lewis
East Lyme — Rita Bonafede Lewis, 83, of 308 Main St., Niantic, formerly of Hartford, died Thursday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
She was born on Sept. 25, 1918, in New London, the daughter of the late Joseph and Jennie DiAma Bonafede.
She attended local schools and graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute in 1936.
Mrs. Lewis worked for the state in the bonding, insurance and comptroller offices in Hartford for 29 years before retiring as a supervisor in 1983. She was previously employed at the former Universal CIT Corp. in New London and at the National Bank of Commerce. She lived in Hartford for many years before retiring to Niantic. She also lived in Japan during the occupation, from 1947 to 1949.
She is survived by a brother, Edmund J. Bonafede of New London; and a sister, Ann Peck of Niantic.
The funeral will assemble at 8 a.m. Saturday at Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum. Calling hours are 5-7 tonight at the funeral home.

Marjorie Mattos
Groton — Marjorie Mae Whipple Gardner Mattos, 65, of 241/2 Midway Oval, died Wednesday at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, after being stricken Tuesday evening.
She was born on June 23, 1936, in New Haven, the daughter of Homer and Margaret Smith Whipple. She was the wife of James Mattos.
Raised in Ledyard, Mrs. Mattos was a 1954 graduate of Norwich Free Academy.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a private duty nurse.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by six sons, Michael Louis Gardner, Steven Thomas Gardner, Marvin Howard Gardner, Mark Daniel Gardner, Scott Van Gardner and Stuart Todd Gardner; three daughters, Margieann Vos, Shiree Yvonne Madiera and Susan Lynn Gardner; four brothers, Nelson “De-De” Whipple, Frederick Whipple, Richard Whipple, and Curtis Whipple; her former husband, Louis Gardner Jr.; three stepchildren; 11 grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral service and burial will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Quakertown Cemetery, Col. Ledyard Highway.
Calling hours are 6-8 p.m. Friday at Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic.
