Behri Knauth
Behri Pratt Knauth, 82, of Stonington Borough, died at Fairview Manor on 19 August 2004.
Born in New York City on 10 November 1921, she was the daughter of Richard Pratt and Marjorie Marsh. She graduated from Julia Richmond High School in 1939 and continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Arts Students League in New York. She worked in 1943 as a first-piece inspector at Sperry Gyroscope, then embarked on a career in magazine design, working with Seventeen, Junior Bazaar, Engineering News Record and Life Magazine. It was at this period that she met and married her husband Percy Knauth and raised a family in New York. In 1966 she and her family moved to Paris, where her husband was foreign editor for Time-Life. It was in Paris that Mrs Knauth studied French cooking and studied under Simone Beck. In 1970 the Knauths moved to Stonington, where she continued to cook, teach and run for a time Club 145. In 1975 she went to work for the Mystic Seaport Museum and returned to publication design. She retired in 1980.
Mr Knauth died in 1995, and she was also predeceased by her brother, Timothy Ashe.
Mrs Knauth is survived by two sons, Timothy Pratt Knauth of Stonington and Geoffrey Stanton Knauth of Williamsport PA; a daughter Elisabeth Anne Knauth of Mystic; four stepsons, Peter Gries Knauth of Kilmarnik VA; Philip Whitman Knauth of Hong Kong; Allan Roediger Knauth of Münster, Germany; and Steven Alexander Knauth of Ivoryton CT; a brother Thane Ashe; a sister Maedra Kellam; and three grandchildren, Mary Wright of Mystic; and Alexander and William Knauth of Williamsport PA.
A memorial service is planned at a later date.

Ernest Santangelo
Ernest R Santangelo, 84, of Stonington, died on Sunday 7 November 2004 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown RI.
Born in New London on 28 February 1920, he was the son of Prospero and Rosalia Santangelo. After graduating from high school he served in the Air Force with the 435th Troop Carrier Group during World War II. After leaving the armed forces he continued his education by attending Rutgers Graduate School of Banking in Rutgers NY, where he took courses in banking and management.
He was employed by the US Government at the Naval Submarine Base in the Disbursing Department. Later he was employed by the Connecticut Bank and Trust Co, where he served as vice president of the Loan Department until his retirement in 1975.
His interests included collecting antiques and handcrafting many award-winning needlepoint projects throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by a sister, Marie Santangelo Nott, of Portsmouth RI; two brothers, Albert Santangelo, of Salem, and John Santangelo, of Novato CA. He also leaves a niece, Betty Talbot Grace, of Wilmington NC, and several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers and sisters, James, Joseph and Philip Santangelo, Vincenza Librizzi, Frances Grimes, Helen Talbot and Mildred Cross.
The funeral will be held from Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, on Thursday 11 November 2004 at 9.15 am with a funeral Mass at St. Mary Church, Stonington Borough, at 10 am. Following the Mass, burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London CT. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4 to 7 pm. Douglas McClenahan
Douglas McClenahan, 71, a resident of Stonington Borough, died on Tuesday, 26 October 2004. He was the son of Rachel Hammond Breck, who lives at Noble Horizons, Salisbury, CT, and the late Richard McClenahan. An inventor and gun designer, he was a founder of Charter Arms, a firearms company.
After selling his company he briefly ran an antique gun shop in Stonington. An accomplished jazz pianist, specializing in boogie woogie, he regularly played piano to entertain residents of Beechwood Manor, a New London nursing home.
He is survived by his mother, by his sister Leith Speiden, and by his nephews, Terry McClenahan and Adam Klauber, by his nieces, Barbara McClenahan Shephard, Rachel Klauber Speiden and Blake Klauber and by his former wife Leslie.
Services were held on 6 November 2004 at Calvary Church, Stonington Borough. Donations may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 169 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill CT 06375.
Rose York
Rose Katherine (de Rosa) York, of Stonington, died on 20 October 2004 at the age of 89.
The daughter of Eugenio de Rosa and Maria Concetta Zirrilli, she was born on 11 November 1914 and raised in New Rochelle NY. Both of her parents were from Calitri, in southern Italy, and had emigrated to the United States in the early 20th century before they were married. Rose graduated from the College of New Rochelle and earned a teaching degree in French and Italian from Fordham University's School of Education. Between 1937 and 1940 she taught high school in Mount Vernon NY and spent the following year studying Italian in Florence.
In 1941 she married Edward Palmer York Jr of Stonington. Soon thereafter, they moved to Baltimore, where he worked at Johns Hopkins University carrying out military research during World War II. In 1948 they moved to Stonington, where she lived for over 50 years. In the mid-1960s she began a career as a librarian, working first as an assistant at the Stonington Free Library. In 1966 she moved to New York City to attend Pratt Institute's School of Library Science and to work as librarian at the Allen-Stevenson School, an elementary boys' school. Two years later she returned to Stonington to complete a master's degree in library science at the University of Rhode Island. In 1969 she became an assistant librarian at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, where she remained until her retirement in 1979.
Mrs York's love of Stonington led her to volunteer for many community organizations. She was president of the Stonington Village Improvement Association in the 1960s and chairperson of the Stonington Borough Planning and Zoning Commission in the 1970s. She also served on the Board of Trustees of the Stonington Free Library between 1980 and 1995, was president for nine years and was instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the library's Wimpfheimer Wing. During the early 1990s she also helped form a citizens group that fought to save the former Atwood Machine Company in Stonington from demolition.
Mrs York is survived by her three children, Gillian York Willard of Baltimore; Edward Palmer York III of San Francisco; and Eugene Van Wyck York of Stonington; two grandchildren, Gillian Willard Shafer of Portland, Maine; and Le Baron Sands Willard of Baltimore; and a great-grandson, McLean Willard Shafer. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph de Rosa, and sisters, Maria Cioffari and Cornelia Fanning. Her marriage to Edward York ended in divorce in 1964.
Her family wishes to give special thanks to the staff of the Village at Waterman Lake in Greenville RI, who cared for her with kindness and respect during the last three-and-a-half years of her life.
Donations in her memory may be sent to the Stonington Free Library, the Stonington Village Improvement Association, and to Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, 30 October 2004, at the United Church of Stonington, 67 Main Street, Stonington Borough.
Fred Fayal
Fred "Freddy" Fayal, 77, of Stonington, died peacefully Thursday night, 30 December 2004, at The Westerly Hospital.
Mr Fayal lived in Stonington for most of his life. Born in 1927 in Fall River MA, he was the only surviving child of Anna Arruda Fayal and James Fayal of São Miguel, Portugal. While a young child, Fayal moved from Fall River to Mystic and then to Stonington. Mr Fayal grew up in the Borough working at his mother's Portuguese bakery.
Mr Fayal attended Stonington High School.
Mr Fayal served as a staff sergeant in Korea as part of the Army's occupational forces following World War II. Upon his return to Stonington in 1947, he married Louise Jackson, from Green Hill Rhode Island, whom he had met at the Rollerdrome in Westerly when he was 17 years old. They celebrated 56 years of marriage last August.
Mr Fayal had many interests, including flying, fishing and boating. He held both instrument and multi-engine pilot ratings. His passion for the sea led Freddy to earn a passenger-vessel captain's license. He cruised the East Coast and the Caribbean with close friends for many years and made a transatlantic passage. He was also the holder of two light-line fishing world records.
Throughout their lives, Fred and Louise enjoyed life on the road. As dedicated “snowbirds,” they made the yearly trek to Fort Myers FL, where they own a winter home. And they traveled extensively in their motor coach, making several trips across the U.S. and to Alaska. Mr Fayal owned a grocery store and bakery in Stonington Borough. But he is perhaps best known, along with Louise, as the owners of “Freddy's Boat Livery.”
Mr. Fayal became a Master Mason, served as secretary of the Neptune Company of the Stonington Borough Fire Department, drove for the Stonington Ambulance Corps and was Chairman of the Stonington Republican Committee. He was also Stonington's Harbormaster for many years, as well as a justice of the peace. He was an active member of the Road Church.
Fred and Louise have two children: Bamby Fields withhusband, Michael, in Cheney, Washington ; and Jim Fayal with his wife Anne in Stonington Borough. They also have five grandchildren: Dr. Deanna Carpenter, a psychotherapist in Minnesota, Aaron Carpenter of Key West, Lydia Fayal, a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University, James Fayal, a freshman at Stonington High School and Charlie Fayal, who attends Mystic Middle School.

Calling hours will be held at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, Sunday 2 January from 6 to 8 pm. A service and reception will be at the Road Church, Pequot Trail, Stonington on Monday, 3 January 2005, starting at 2 pm.
Alvida Anderson
Alvida Lopes Anderson, 77, of Cannon Square, Stonington Borough, died on Tuesday 7 December 2004 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London after a lengthy illness.
Born in Stonington on 24 January 1927, she was the daughter of John P and Leopoldina DeAndre Lopes. In 1945 she married Evans Anderson in Stonington. He died in 1972.
Mrs Anderson was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Stonington, and had been active with the Cub Scouts and the P.T.A.
She is survived by three sons, William Anderson of Orlando FL; and Bruce Anderson and Timothy Anderson, both of Stonington; a daughter, Pamela Jones, also of Stonington; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Lucy Rita, Mildred Santos and Mary G. Lopes.
The funeral will be held from the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, on Saturday 11 December 2004 at 9.15 am with a Funeral Mass at St. Mary Church, Stonington Borough, at 10 am. Burial will be in Stonington Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Betsy Jane Bartholet
Betsy Batholet, born on 9 January 1939, a full-time resident of Stonington since 1993 and a summer resident since 1967, died on 3 December 2004, of cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Chauncey; her children, Anne, Charles and Sanford; their spouses Mathieu, Anne and Helen; and six grandchildren, Nicolas, Pauline, Luke, Doyle, Andrew and Benjamin. She is also survived by her sister, Susan Sedgwick, of Holden MA and nine nieces and nephews.
Mrs Bartholet was an energetic volunteer in a number of local organizations. She scheduled and drove for the Calvary Church Meals on Wheels program and also drove community members to various hospitals and doctors in the area through the Stonington Community Center program. Betsy's straw hat, high spirit and limitless patience were a feature of the paperback table of the Stonington Fair for many years. Mystic Seaport knew her carpentry skills well through the Pilots Program. Betsy loved to fly and was deeply involved with the Westerly Airport Association for which she was treasurer and the Westchester Aviation Association, where she had also served as treasurer. The Young Eagles will remember her joy at the yoke of her Cessna 150 at the Westerly and Groton air shows, which she also helped to organize.
Mrs Bartholet worked as a nursery school teacher for Hitchcock Nursery School, and later in various positions in the Public High School in Scarsdale NY, where she lived for 30 years. She was an enthusiastic golfer at the Stonington Country Club and a longtime member of the Wadawanuck Club, where she won singles and doubles tennis titles and was governor for swimming several times. Mrs Bartholet graduated from Connecticut College in 1960.
A memorial service for Mrs Bartholet will be held at Calvary Church on 11 December 2004 at 11 am.
