Gloria V. DelBuono
SOUTHINGTON — Gloria V. DelBuono, 75, of 1052 Meriden Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at home. She was the wife of Stephen DelBuono.
Born on May 19, 1923, in Exeter, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Doric and Emma (Nichols) Baillargeon. She was a parishioner of Mary Our Queen Church and the Ladies Guild of the church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Stephen and daughter-in-law Barbara DelBuono of Plainville; two daughters, Emma and son-in-law Richard Muth of Southington and Gloria and son-in-law John Day of Southington; two brothers, Victor and Amede Baillargeon; a sister, Alma Belanger, all of Exeter, N.H.; six grandchildren, Ginnyann Campbell, Richard B. Muth, Deena Marie Miller, Darlene C. Sims, Gloria Dorau, Dawn Krystanowicz; and six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jacob, Michayla, Samantha, Cody, and Ethen; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Mary Our Queen Church. Calling hours will be Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Donations may be made in her memory to the Lions Club of Southington Eye Fund, P.O. Box 457, Southington, CT.
Paul E. Dunphy
MERIDEN — Paul E. Dunphy, 66, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Health Care Systems, West Haven Campus.
Mr. Dunphy was born in Houlton, Maine, Sept. 25, 1912, a son of the late Kenneth and Dorothy Graham Dunphy, and was a lifelong Meriden resident. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Stanley Budleski Post No. 9965 of Yalesville. An avid Civil War collector, his collection is on display at the Goffe Street Armory in New Haven.
He is survived by his son, Stephen Dunphy of Oklahoma; his sister and brother-in-law, Gail M. and William E. Langevin of Meriden; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James M. and June M. Dunphy of Meriden and Kenneth B. H. and Kathy Dunphy of Arizona; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Ralph Dunphy and his brother Robert Dunphy.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. at the conclusion of the calling hours. Graveside services, with military honors, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown.
Matthew E. Gammerino
WALLINGFORD — Matthew E. Gammerino, 92, formerly of Center St., Wallingford, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Brook Hollow Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Irene Gariepy Gammerino.
Mr. Gammerino was born in Wallingford, Nov. 9, 1906, a son of the late Donato and Irene Massucci Gammerino and was a lifelong resident here. He had been a die cutter at the former Wallace Silversmiths for 43 years until his retirement, and was active in the labor movement, serving as an official of the Amalgamated Silverworkers Union, Local No. 45, and the International Jewelry Workers Union, AFL-CIO. He had also served as majority leader of the Town of Wallingford Representative Town Meeting.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and George Irish of Winter Garden, Fla.; his son, Matthew E. Gammerino Jr. of New Jersey; his two grandsons, Matthew Irish of Wallingford and Michael Irish of Meriden; a great-grandson, Stephen Irish of Wallingford; a brother, Charles Gammerino of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Benjamin Gammerino and John Gammerino; and two sisters, Philomena Martin and Edith Manescu.
Relatives and friends may attend a Memorial Mass of Christian burial Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at 9 a.m. at Most Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be private in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 188, North Haven, CT 06473. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford.
Harry G. Kastner Sr.
SOUTHINGTON — Harry G. Kastner Sr., 81, of Fern Cliff Drive, died in the arms of his wife and loving partner of 56 years, Josephine "Jo" Calvanese Kastner on Dec. 25, 1998.
In 1960 Harry and Jo settled in Southington to raise their six children and for over 20 years Harry was the owner of Sportman's Cafe in Plantsville. Harry served in the European Theatre during World War II. His legacy to his sons and daughters was and is competition; whether it's playing golf or bridge, we play to win. A more noble inheritance from Harry was his love of family. His disapproval was daunting but his loyalty, limitless. His contribution to society was raising six children to love, respect, and obey their elders. Fare thee well, dear daddy.
His wife and children, Laurie Lepore, Harry Jr. and Ray Kastner, and Ruth Kastner Wagner, will miss him dearly and remember him always. Others too, called him Dad: Sharon Kastner Walstrom, Sandy Kastner, Nancy Powers and June Kastner Dunlap. Laurie's husband, Tom, liked to call him Grumpy, not that he was in the least bit grouchy. We'd all like to believe that at this moment he is embracing his sons, Billy and Jack, whose presence on this earth was all too brief. Also 16 splendid young women and men had Grampy in their lives: Sally, Belinda, Rebecca, Brian, Jessica, Erik, Sarah, Jill, Jodie, Katie, Bailey, Elizabeth, Jocelyn, Lindsay, Megan and Elliot. He leaves behind his sisters, Dottie Ruganis and Mabel Brew and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at 7 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Joe and Kay Calvanese Charitable Foundation, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville, CT 06479.
Katherine Kenefick
MERIDEN — Katherine Kenefick, 75, of 301 Baldwin Ave., wife of the late Donald J. Kenefick, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Coccomo Memorial Health Care in Meriden after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden on June 16, 1923, daughter of the late Laurence and Angela (Ahern) Dewey, she was a lifelong resident of Meriden and was a graduate of Meriden schools. Mrs. Kenefick was employed by International Silver Co., Medicare, Connecticut General Life Ins. Co. and by Travelers Insurance Co., from which she retired in 1995. She was a parishioner of St. Laurent Church, and a member of the Sisters of St. Anne and of the Meriden Council of Catholic women.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Michael Mayer of East Berlin; one son and daughter-in-law, Timothy M. and Christine Simon-Kenefick of Brighton, Mich.; one granddaughter, Kate Mayer; four grandsons, Todd and Matthew Kenefick, and Brian and Jonathan Mayer; one sister, Elaine D'Emanuele of Meriden; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lorraine Dewey of Wallingford; and by several nieces and nephews, including, Mark D'Emanuele, Carol Peruccio and Larry Dewey.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Contributions in her memory may be made to MidState V.N.A. and Hospice, 658 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450, or to Connecticut Hospice, 61 Burban Drive, Branford, CT 06405. Anna A. Lang
MERIDEN — Anna A. Bares Lang, 85, formerly of Wolcott, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at MidState Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Adolph A. Lang Jr.
Mrs. Lang was born in Waterbury, Sept. 10, 1913, a daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Bares and had been a Wolcott resident for many years until moving to Meriden 25 years ago. She had been a volunteer at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center, East Campus for many years, with over 5000 hours of service, and had been second place runnerup for Volunteer of the Year.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Roberta R. Griffin and Frank Griffin of Meriden; her two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, Kelley Murdy and her husband, Brian, and their three children, Matthew, Steven, and Krysta; and Rick and LuAnn Griffin and their two children, Daniel and Shelby; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Valesta Read, and a brother, Frank Bares.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Meriden. The Rev. Carl A. Krueger, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in New Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury. Reginald D. Longley
WALLINGFORD — Reginald D. Longley, 55, of 113 Cook Hill Rd., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at the MidState Medical Center. He was the husband of Shirley Bowser Longley.
He was born in Lowell, Vt., Feb. 20, 1943, a son of the late Floyd D. and Viola Lumbra Longley. He was employed as a mechanic for D'Amato Brothers Builders in Milford. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church of North Haven.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, William D. and Kathleen Longley, Philip C. and Diane Longley, both of Meriden, Donald L. and Margaret Longley of Wallingford; a daughter and son-in-law, Tina M. and Alfred Miller of Durham; two brothers, Wayne Longley of Vt. and Stanley Longley of Wallingford; a sister, Geraldine Stack of East Thetford, Vt.; many step-brothers; and five grandchildren, Tiffany, Amanda, James and Tyler Longley and Jason Miller.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., Wallingford. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery. Betty Malanych
MERIDEN — Betty (Millington) Malanych, 68, of 106 Brooklawn Drive, wife of Jerry Malanych, died on Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at home surrounded by her loving family after a long illness.
She was born in Washburn, Maine, on Jan. 9, 1930, daughter of the late John and Clara (Maude) Millington. Mrs. Malanych was a resident of Meriden for most of her life and was a devoted wife and mother.
Besides her husband, Jerry, she is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Michael Craig of West Hartford; one son, Jerry L. Malanych of Meriden; one grandson, Alexander Malanych of Meriden; one sister, Kay and Tom Chamberlin of Meriden; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Jack and Joyce Millington of Maine and Tib Millington of California; and by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Malanych was predeceased by her daughter, Robin Ann Malanych and by her brother, Earl Millington.

Ruth L. Schuelke
MERIDEN — Ruth Louise Schuelke, 81, formerly of 110 Columbia St., died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at the Meriden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Meriden, Jan. 24, 1917, a daughter of the late Gustave Henry and Bertha Link Schuelke. She had worked as a secretary at the Silver City Glass Company. She belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Friendship Club.
She is survived by five nieces; and three nephews. She was predeceased by nine brothers and three sisters.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at Gethsemane Cemetery
in Meriden. The Rev. Perry Beaver will officiate. The Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden is in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 164 Hanover St., Meriden, CT 06450.
Josephine A. Service
MERIDEN — Josephine A. Service, 88, formerly of 636 Broad St., died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at the Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late John M. Service.
Born Jan. 24, 1910 in Wallingford, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Polanski. She was a longtime employee of New Departure Division of the General Motors Corporation until her retirement. She was a parishioner of St. Rose Church and a member of the Daughters of Isabella.
Mrs. Service is survived by daughter and sons-in-law, Sharon and Dr. C. Robert Biondino of Wallingford; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Suzanne Service of Meriden; four grandchildren, Robert and Alysha Biondino and Jamie and Todd Service; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Olga Polanski of Meriden and Walter and Alice Polanski of Wallingford; several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Philip Polanski.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian burial, Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at 11 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. The family requests donations in her memory be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT. Wanda H. Skladzien
STOUGHTON, Mass. — Wanda Harriet Skladzien, 86, formerly of Meriden and Madison, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at St. Joseph's Manor in Brockton, Mass. She was the wife of the late Dr. Stephen A. Skladzien.
Born Sept. 27, 1912, in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Jadwiga (Swiantek) Lenik. She attended St. Stanislaus School and Meriden High School and graduated from the Meriden School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1933. She also attended the Children's School of Nursing in Boston, Mass. and was employed as a nurse at the Meriden Hospital. Mrs. Skladzien was a longtime parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, a founding member and first president of its Ladies Guild. She was a Life Member of the Girl Scouts of America, a longtime participant in the Girl Scout Council of Meriden and a member of the Meriden Library Board.
Mrs. Skladzien is survived by a son, Stephen A. Skladzien Jr. of Branford; three daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia and Thomas Recupero of Stoughton, Mass., Celeste and Paul Missett of Gladwyne, Pa., and MaryLou and Andrew Meade of North Falmouth, Mass.; a brother, Edward Lenik of the Plantsville section of Southington; a sister, Jeannette White of Holliston, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Irene E. Staszewski.
The funeral will be Monday, Dec. 28, 1998 at 9 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, CT., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 8 a.m. Monday morning.
