Edward P. Gaj
MERIDEN — Edward P. Gaj, 73, of 116 Sagamore Road, beloved husband of Janice (Baigert) Gaj, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, after a brief illness.
He was born on April 19, 1925, son of the late John and Frances (Przywara) Gaj. Prior to his retirement he was employed by the Meriden Record-Journal for 41 years as chief technician. Mr. Gaj was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army.
Besides his wife, Janice, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy G. Lucas of Meriden; three sons, Paul E. Gaj of Groton, Mass., William E. Gaj of Meriden, and Daniel E. Gaj of Wallingford; two daughters-in-law, Nancie P. Gaj of Groton, Mass. and Lisa G. Gaj of Wallingford; three grandchildren, Matthew Lucas of Meriden and Phoenix and Maxfield Gaj of Groton, Mass.; two sisters, Bernice Kasabucki and Genevieve Edgar; five brothers, Joseph Gaj, Theodore Gaj, Stanley Gaj, Henry Gaj, and John Gaj; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, and at 9 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 127 Washington Ave., North Haven, CT 06473-0188, or to the Franciscan Home Care, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, CT 06451.

Henry J. Marosz
MIDDLEFIELD — Henry J. Marosz, 59, of Ballfall Road, Rockfall, died Saturday at his home.
He was born in Meriden, son of Ladisla "Lottie" (Jarzabek) Marosz of Rockfall and the late Henry Marosz. He had been employed in the construction field.
Besides his mother, he leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Amelia and Joseph Tierney of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; two brothers, John Marosz and Robert Marosz, both of Middletown; two sisters, Charlotte Marosz of Middletown and Margaret Ticino of Meriden; a close friend, Susan Cotrone; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. The Biega Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Giuseppe Mercuri
S. GIOVANNI di CERACE, Italy — Giuseppe Mercuri died Dec. 24, 1998, in S. Giovanni di Cerace.
He is survived by a niece, Stella Muratore; a grandniece, Teresa Fazzolari; and a grandnephew, Lawrence Fazzolari; all of Meriden.
If friends desire, contributions in his name for the Diabetes Association may be sent to Stella Muratore, 97C Stoddard Drive, Meriden 06450, and she will forward them to his family in Italy.

Benjamin Sakowich
WALLINGFORD — Benjamin M. Sakowich, 74, of 438 Church St., Yalesville, husband of Alberta (Dustin) Sakowich, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Born in Waterbury, July 6, 1924, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Sakowich. He had resided in Yalesville for the past 37 years. He was graduate of Waterbury schools and was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in North Haven until his retirement in 1989. He had also worked part-time at Mickey's Garage in Wallingford.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Steven Sobieski of Meriden; one son, Benjamin R. Sakowich of Middlefield; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Ashley Sobieski of Meriden; two sisters, Frances Severson of Naugatuck and Louise Karpicki of Waterbury; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Anna Mae Sakowich of Naugatuck; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a stepson, Michael Allen.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Yalesville. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Florence Schlenker
MERIDEN — Florence Schlenker, 91, of the Miller Memorial Community, formerly of 11 Union St., Wallingford, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998. She was the wife of the late Rudolph Schlenker.
She was born in Sheffield, England, Oct. 22, 1907, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Ann Morrell Tongue. The family had lived in Providence, R.I., until moving to Wallingford in 1921. She had worked at R. Wallace and Sons for many years until her retirement. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wallingford and had been very active in church as a Sunday school teacher and volunteer at the thrift shop.
She is survived by two sisters; and a brother-in-law, Lillian and Leslie Prowse and Mildred Tongue, all of Wallingford.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 65 North Main St., Wallingford. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery. Friends may call at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. If friends so desire, gifts in her memory may be made to the All Saints Memorial Fund, c/o St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 65 North Main St., Wallingford 06492.

Russell W. Hayden Sr.
DERBY — Russell W. Hayden Sr., 85, died Dec. 30, 1998, in his home. He was the widower of Mildred McBride Hayden,
Mr. Hayden was born in Bridgeport and was a Stratford resident most of his life and a Derby resident since 1990. He was a former milkman with the Mitchell and Bordens Dairies, and an employee of the Stratford Board of Education as a custodian for the Chapel Street School. He was a member of the Derby Senior Citizens.
Survivors include three sons, Russell W. Hayden Jr. of Southington, Eugene C. Hayden of Monroe and Robert J. Hayden Sr. of Fairfield; three daughters, Gail C. Boyko of Monroe, Mary Ann Hayden of Oxford, Margaret E. Bayusik of Oxford; one brother, Chester F. Hayden of Trumbull; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two grandsons, Russell W. Hayden III and Robert J. Hayden Jr.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Jude's Church, Monroe. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1175 Post Road East, Westport, CT 06880. The Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Road, Trumbull, CT, is in charge of arrangements.

David A. Anderson
NORTH BRANFORD — David A. Anderson, 57, beloved husband of Patricia Allen Anderson, of Woodhouse Ave., passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at Yale-New Haven Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden, Aug. 30, 1941, the son of Arthur C. Anderson of Northford and the late Dora Allaire Anderson, he had been a Wallingford resident for 40 years, until moving to Northford 17 years ago. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Wallingford. He was employed by Westchester Motor Lines in New Haven for the past several years and was a member of the Connecticut Quarter Century Traffic Club, and the Yellow Dogs Traffic Association.
Besides his wife and father, he is survived by his brother, Robert Terni of West Haven; and three nephews.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m., when a funeral service will be held. The Rev. Robert C. Hass, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will be private in In Memoriam Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the Leukemia Society of American, Chapter 8501, 300 Research Parkway, Suite 310, Meriden, CT 06450.

Giuseppe Coppola
MERIDEN — Giuseppe Coppola, 69, husband of Rosa DelBuono Coppola, of 52 Orchard Hill Road, died Friday night, Oct. 30, 1998, in St. Mary Hospital, Waterbury.
He was born in Ruviano, Italy, June 29, 1929, a son of the late Michele and Luisa Altieri Coppola. He was a resident of Meriden since he came to the United States in 1966. He was home builder, carpenter and furniture maker his entire career, both in Italy and the U.S. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Santi Coppola and Pasquale and Maria Coppola, all of Meriden; five grandchildren, Joseph and Paula Coppola and Rosanna, Pepe and Carmina Coppola; a brother, Mario Coppola of Southington; and 10 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Stefano Coppola.
Funeral services for Mr. Coppola will begin in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 West Main St., Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at 8:15 a.m., with a Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9 a.m. He will be entombed in the mausoleum in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home, Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Kathleen Nelson
MERIDEN — Kathleen Nelson, 78, of 35 Pratt St., died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at MidState Medical Center. She was born Aug. 8, 1920, in Oxford, N.C.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon, Monday, Nov. 2, at the Mount Hebron Baptist Church, 84 Franklin St., Meriden. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday , Nov. 1, at the church. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden.

Eleanor Petrus
MERIDEN — Eleanor (Bonadies) Petrus, 89, of 320 Colony St., and formerly of 38 Hughes St., Hartford, wife of the late John Petrus, died Friday evening, Oct. 30, 1998, at the Bradley Home in Meriden after a brief illness.
Born in Hartford on March 24, 1909, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Cavalcante Bonadies, she had resided in Hartford for most of her life prior to moving to Meriden some 3 1/2 years ago. Mrs. Petrus attended schools in Hartford and was a graduate of Bulkeley High School, class of 1926. She was employed by the Travelers Insurance Co. for many years as a secretary and more recently in its education department, prior to retiring in 1991. Mrs. Petrus was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Meriden.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and the Hon. John F. Papandrea of Meriden; three grandchildren, Anne-Marie Papandrea of Quincy, Mass., attorney Mary-Rose Papandrea and attorney John F. Papandrea Jr., both of Washington , D.C.; two sisters, Virginia Foley of Centerville, Mass. and Mary Zaremba of West Hartford, Conn.; a brother, Robert Bonadies of Manchester, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Richard Petrus of East Hartford; and by three brothers and a sister.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Meriden. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the Bradley Home, 320 Colony St., Meriden, CT 06451.

Louise L. Salzillo
CHESHIRE — Louise Lasala Salzillo, beloved wife of Lawrence Salzillo, died Oct. 30, 1998.
She was the mother and mother-in-law of Laura and Frank DelVecchio of Cheshire; grandmother of Jennifer Houtz and Peter DelVecchio; and sister of Adeline DeChello and Julia Rapuano, and was predeceased by three sisters and six brothers.
The funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at 10 a.m. from the Maresca & Sons Funeral Home, 592 Chapel St., with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Michael's Church at 10:30 a.m. Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in All Saints Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to be made to Hospice Home Care of Cheshire.
