Philip A. Smith
SOUTHINGTON — Former Southington resident Philip A. Smith, 66, died Oct. 6, 1998, in Colorado. He was the son of Eloise Smith Chandonnet and the late Dudley H. Smith.
He was born in Chicago on April 29, 1932. He graduated from Lewis High School and the University of Connecticut, class of 1954. He served for three years in the U.S. Air Force as a first lieutenant.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Joudrey Smith and sons, Maj. Bruce G. Smith, Douglas J. Smith and Scott A. Smith; daughters-in-law, April, Betsy and Sara; and 10 grandchildren, all of Colorado. He leaves two brothers, Richard W. Smith and wife Lee of Marion, Roland H. Smith and wife Judy of Wolcott; four nieces and a nephew.
Graveside services were held Oct. 12, 1998, at South End Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Koenig officiating at the service. Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Tonski
WALLINGFORD — Gerald Tonski, 53, of 18 S. Orchard St., died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at MidState Medical Center.
Born July 6, 1945, in Hartford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Wilma Tonski. He was raised in Manchester, where he also attended school. He lived in Wallingford for more than 25 years. He worked at various construction companies in the area.
Mr. Tonski is survived by two daughters, Christine Tonski of Guilford and Tracey Tonski of Florida; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Lois Tonski of Rockville; a sister, Wilma O'Connell of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one uncle, three aunts, nine nieces and nephews, 12 great-nieces and nephews, several cousins, and a special friend, Patricia Desroches of Wallingford.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

John J. Whalen
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — John J. Whalen, 93, of 154 Centennial Lane, husband of the late Adeline (Sobczyk) Whalen, died on Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at Quinley Inn, South Daytona, Fla., after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden, Conn., on Aug. 11, 1905, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret J. (Carey) Whalen and had lived in Meriden before moving to Florida three years ago. He had been employed by First National Stores for more than 30 years before owning and operating Whalen's Grocery Store in Meriden. Mr. Whalen then worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, retiring in 1970. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church in Meriden and then Our Lady of Hope Church in Daytona Beach, Fla. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Silver City Council No. 2.
Mr. Whalen is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Leonard Catucci of Daytona Beach and Jacqueline and Frank Owsianik Sr. of Meriden; eight grandchildren, Frank Jr., John and Timothy Owsianik, Nancy Knox, Laurie Legere, all of Meriden, Susan Bryand of South Meriden, Eileen Bujda of Manchester, Conn., and Lisa Burns of New Milford, Conn.; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Veronica Hawkins of Portland, Maine; and one brother and sister-in-law, William and Sheila Whalen of Wellesley, Mass.; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Lawrence, Joseph and Edward Whalen; and four sisters, Mary Whalen, Catherine Gendron, Margaret Gagne and Helen Spencer.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Evelyn L. Ballough
HOLIDAY, Fla. — Evelyn L. Cassello Ballough, 82, of Holiday, Fla., formerly of North Cherry Street, Wallingford, Conn., died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, in Florida. She was the beloved wife of Albert E. Ballough.
Mrs. Ballough was born in Wallingford, Aug. 20, 1916, a daughter of the late Joseph and Genoeffa Macero Cassello, and had been a Wallingford resident for many years until moving to Florida 19 years ago. She had been a seamstress at the former Feldman Dress Co. in Wallingford for many years until her retirement.
Besides her husband, Albert, she is survived by her devoted family; her two daughters and her son-in-law, Genafa B. and Ernest J. Byar of Wallingford, and Barbara A. Ballough of Meriden; her son and daughter-in-law, James J. and Sandy Ballough of Wallingford; her 12 grandchildren, her great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Fannie Cassello Wolf and her two brothers, Michael Cassello and Frank Cassello.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at 10 a.m. at the Wallingford Funeral Home. Interment will be in In Memoriam Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Suite No. 104, Hamden, CT 06518.

Richard F. Buswell
ROCKY HILL — Richard F. "Buzz" Buswell, 72, of Rocky Hill, formerly of Glastonbury, beloved husband for 51 years of Dell (Leonard) Buswell, died Thursday (Oct. 22, 1998) at Hartford Hospital.
Mr. Buswell received an M.E. degree at Yale University, and a master's degree from the University of Michigan. He had worked for 38 years at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and five years consulting at Ballard Industries in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was a past master of Compass Lodge, Masonic Order, and a Golden Sheaf member of the Grange. For many years Buzz and Dell were active members of the Glastonbury Square Dance Club. They also enjoyed skiing, tennis, camping, golfing, travel and bird-watching.
Besides his loving wife, Richard is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Linda Buswell of Healy, Alaska; his daughter, Sue (Buswell) Westin of Dorset, Vt.; his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Candy Buswell of Ellington; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday (Oct. 25) at 2 p.m. in the Congregational Church of South Glastonbury. A reception will follow in the church social hall. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center, 85 Retreat Ave., Hartford, CT 06102-5037. The Mulryan Funeral Home, Glastonbury, has care of arrangements.

Vincent E. Coughlin
WALLINGFORD — Vincent E. Coughlin, 85, beloved husband of Beatrice Cavazuti Coughlin, of Simpson Avenue, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at their home.
Mr. Coughlin was born in Wallingford, Dec. 21, 1912, son of the late James and Corinne Fugere Coughlin, and was a lifelong resident here. He had been proprietor of the former Vinnie's Grocery and Delicatessen, on the corner of Center Street and Wallace Avenue, for many years, and had also been employed at Choate Rosemary Hall for several years. He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Pinta Council No. 5, and had been a member of the Wallingford Exchange Club.
Besides his wife, Beatrice, he is survived by his two daughters and son-in-law, Janice C. and John F. Bruce, and Mary C. Flannery, all of Meriden; his four grandchildren, John V. Bruce, Michael J. Bruce, Keron F. Flannery, and Susan M. Flannery, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Corinne Ross, and his brother, Francis Coughlin.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Saturday from 11 a.m. until noon, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in In Memoriam Cemetery. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Holy Trinity School, 11 N. Whittlesey Ave., Wallingford, CT 06492.

John Hoydilla
MERIDEN — John Hoydilla, 71, of 23 Brooklawn Drive, beloved husband of 47 years to Marilyn (Thompson) Hoydilla, died on Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven after a two-year courageous battle with an illness.
Born in Bridgeport on July 26, 1927, he was the son of the late Michael and Bertha (Vargo) Hoydilla. He was a lifelong resident of Meriden and had been employed by Pratt & Whitney Machine Tool Co. in West Hartford as a heavy duty machine builder for 25 years and was a past president of Hoydilla's Garage in Middlefield and Higganum for some 23 years. Mr. Hoydilla was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Air Force under Gen. Tunner in Air-Sea Rescue.
Besides his wife, Marilyn, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Lee Hoydilla of Meriden; two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter John and Marie Hoydilla, Mark John and Dawn Hoydilla, all of Meriden; a sister, Vera Garstka of Rochester, N.H.; and a brother, William Hoydilla of Florida; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Stephen, Frank and Michael Jr., and three sisters, Ann, Mary and Sue.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

James E. Paul Jr.
CHESHIRE — James E. Paul Jr., 80, of Woodpond Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at Yale New Haven Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Eleanora (Tomasso) Paul.
He was born May 14, 1918, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., a son of the late John E. Paul Sr. and Adelaide Newman Paul. He was a mechanic for White Motors and International Motors of West Haven and a coach driver for Chieppo Bus Co. for several years. He retired in 1978. He was also a former employee of the Knudsen Brothers Dairy and an avid dealer of antiques. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, Ronald V. Paul of Wallingford, John E. Paul III and Richard P. Paul of Branford, David M. Paul of Hopkinton, Mass., and Kevin J. Paul of New York, N.Y.; two daughters, Doreen S. Paul of New Haven and Debra A. Palladino of Cheshire; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Adelaide Sheeley.
Funeral services will be from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden, at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with a Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Hamden, at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials in his name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Suite 104, Hamden, CT 06518.

Theron E. Sherman
BERLIN — Theron Everett Sherman, 87, of 34 Butler St., Kensington, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at Andrew House Healthcare in New Britain. He was the loving husband of the late Hattie Peck Sherman.
He was born in Duxbury, Vt., June 6, 1911, a son of the late Orville and Florence Farnsworth Sherman. He was employed as a stationary engineer at International Silver Co. for more than 15 years and at the former George Scott Co. of South Meriden. He lived in Kensington most of his life.
He is survived by two daughters, Virginia DeVivo and Violet Buteau, both of Kensington; a son, William Sherman of Middletown; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by five brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Norma Rust will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour before the services. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. If desired, contributions in Mr. Sherman's memory may be made to the Kensington United Methodist Church, 103 Hotchkiss St., Kensington, CT 06037, or to the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church, 145 Main St., South Meriden, CT 06451.
