Frederick W. Leffer
GOODFIELD, Ill. — Frederick W. (Fritz) Leffer, 49, of 1 Conklin Court, died suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 27, at United Hospital and Medical Center in Port Chester, NY.
He was born in Oak Park, Ill., Nov. 15, 1948, a son of Frederick A. Leffer of Wallingford and the late Dorothy Soehrens Leffer.
He currently was employed by Belle Lighting Company in NY. Fritz had a life long love for the theater, working as lighting director for numerous shows, including "A Chorus Line," and "Box With God" on Broadway and was technical director for various theaters across the country.
In addition to his father and step-mother, Ingrid Forslund Liedke Leffer of Wallingford, he is survived by a brother, John L.G. Leffer of Gurney, Ill. and two sisters, Margaret Flood of San Antonio and Ann Ingrid Millikan of Harrington Park, NJ.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford with the Rev. Robert Hass officiating. There are no calling hours.
If friends so desire, gifts in his memory may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund, 235 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford, CT 06492.
The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., is in charge of arrangements.

Deirdre L. Pichnarcik
CHESHIRE — Deirdre L. Pichnarcik, 53, of 654 Wiese Road, Cheshire, wife of Jacob (Jack) R. Pichnarcik, died on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden on Jan. 10, 1945, she was the daughter of Dorothy Kelley of Meriden and the late James Kelley. Mrs. Pichnarcik was educated in the Meriden school system. She was employed by the former Central Bank and most recently First Union Bank. She was a parishioner of St. Bridget Church in Cheshire.
Besides her husband, Jacob, she is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jacob Pichnarcik of Texas , Jeffrey and Lisa Pichnarcik of Milford, and Brian and Renee Pichnarcik of Cheshire; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jacob Pichnarcik of Orlando, Fla., Drew and Logan Pichnarcik of Cheshire; two sisters, Patricia Wusterbarth of Meriden and Ms. Diarmid Kelley of Meriden; and a brother, James Kelley of Wallingford; and by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. in St. Bridget Church, Cheshire. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Connecticut Hospice, 61 Burban Drive, Branford, CT 06405.

Henry T. Bentley
NEW HAVEN — Henry T. Bentley, 64, of New Haven, died Oct. 19, 1998, at home.
Funeral services and burial were private.
Arrangements were handled by Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden.

Arthur D. D'Agostino
SOUTHINGTON — Arthur D. D'Agostino, 83, of 247 Berlin St., died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Anna (DellaVecchia) D'Agostino.
Born March 8, 1915, in Fonda, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose (Audi) D'Agostino. He had been employed at Rogers Orchards for over 60 years and retired from the Board of Education 10 years ago. Mr. D'Agostino was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph M. D'Agostino of Plantsville and Arthur P. D'Agostino of Southington; three brothers, Angelo D'Agostino of Southington, Anthony D'Agostino of Bristol and Philip D'Agostino of Plantsville; three sisters, Mary Serafino and Pamela Nardi of Southington and Josephine Forcella of Plainville; several grandchildren including Patricia Whalen with whom he made his home; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Michael and Patrick.
The funeral will be held Saturday 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday 5 to 8 p.m.

Caroline Hazlett
MERIDEN — Caroline (Drechsler) Hazlett, 85, of 370 Cook Ave., wife of the late Robert G. Hazlett, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at the Connecticut Baptist Home in Meriden after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden on March 30, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Edward P. and Anna (Mallo) Drechsler. She attended local schools and was a lifelong resident of Meriden. Mrs. Hazlett was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, a member of the Rosary Society and of the Meriden Council of Catholic Women.
Mrs. Hazlett is survived by her daughter, Audrey A. Hazlett of Meriden, with whom she made her home, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home on Saturday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to Mass.

Augustin Mercado
MERIDEN — Augustin "Chin" Mercado, 43, of 26 Camp St., died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at MidState Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the husband of Alma Iris Soto Mercado.
He was born in Aguada, Puerto Rico on Feb. 28, 1955, son of Maria Beniquez Mercado of Paterson, NJ and the late Hipolito Mercado. He was a resident of Meriden for six years.
Along with his beloved wife Alma, he is survived by two daughters, Sahily and Marlene Mercado; a son, Derling Mercado, all of Meriden; a granddaughter; several brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. He was loved by all and will be missed dearly.
Relatives and friends may call at Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Puerto Rico.

Lena Smith Lyons Ray
SOUTHINGTON — Lena Smith Lyons Ray, wife of Howard P. Ray went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998.
Born in Owls Head, N.Y., Nov. 25, 1913, she was the only daughter of the late Warren Albert and Alma Arnot Smith. Mrs. Ray was a former waitress at the Deluxe Restaurant and B.P.O.E. of Malone, N.Y., and had retired from Five Star in Plantsville in 1975. She was a member of the Elm City, Chapter 469 the Order of the Eastern Star in Malone, N.Y.
Besides her husband of 30 years, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura Lee (Lyons) and Kenneth Harwood of Naples, Fla., formerly of Southington, Beverly (Lyons) and Dale Blaisdell of Meriden; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Diane Lyons Jr. of Owls Head, N.Y.; a foster daughter, Shirley Beger of Southington; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter M. Lyons.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Plantsville Congregational Church, 99 Church St. Friends may call at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Burial will be in South End Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Visiting Nurses of Central CT, P.O. Box 1327, New Britain, CT 06050, or the Plantsville Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 99 Church St., Plantsville, CT 06479.

Walter Savage
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Walter James (Jim) Savage, 73, of Santa Cruz died Oct. 27, 1998, in Spokane, Wash., while visiting his son, W.J. Savage Jr., and his family.
He was a native of Meriden, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elliott Savage. Educated in Meriden schools, he graduated from Cheshire Academy and entered the U.S. Navy in the pre-flight program. After World War II he attended Brown University. His business career of 39 years was with the western division of Fruehaf Trailer Co. as a sales executive.
He is survived by four children, W.J. Savage Jr. of Spokane, Wash., Keith A. Savage of San Jose, Calif., Kim E. Savage of Tempe, Ariz., and Wendy S. Murillo of Magalia, Calif.; six grandchildren, Zachary and Spencer Savage, Laurel and Kevin Savage and Cameron and Brian Murillo; and one sister, Marion Savage Isakson, and her family, formerly of Cheshire. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria Hull Savage in 1994.
A funeral Mass will be held in Spokane, and burial will follow in San Jose, Calif.

Vincent R. Zolkiewicz
WALLINGFORD — Vincent R. Zolkiewicz, 72, loving husband of Velma Dighello Zolkiewicz of Durham Road,Wallingford, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 at MidState Medical Center.
Mr. Zolkiewicz was born in Wallingford April 18, 1926, a son of the late Thaddeus and Pauline Pomykala Zolkiewicz. He was a life long resident here. He had been a metallurgist at the former Detroit Steel Corporation in Hamden for 30 years until his retirement in 1988. A parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church where he had served as an usher for many years, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Pinta Council No. 5. He was also a member of the American Society for Metals and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Besides his wife Velma, he is survived by his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Zolkiewicz-Ives and Richard P. Ives of Wallingford; his mother-in-law, Esther DeMarco Dighello of Wallingford; three sisters, Amelia (Mrs. Raymond) Drehs of Southington, Sophie (Mrs. Leo) Albertini and Pauline (Mrs. Archie) Passmore, both of Wallingford; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Edward Zolkiewicz of Wallingford and Theodore and Virginia Zolkiewicz of North Haven; and many nieces and nephews.
His family will receive relatives and friends at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will be in St. John's Cemetery. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Most Holy Trinity Church Preservation Project, 68 N. Colony St., Wallingford, CT 06492.
