IRIS GOLDSTEIN
WALLINGFORD — Iris Bernard Goldstein of 18 Holly Lane, wife of the late Nathan Goldstein, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Goldstein of Newington and a son, William Goldstein of Wallingford; a brother, Stuart Bernard of Hamden; and two grandchildren, Robert and Rebecca Goldstein.
Funeral services will be held at 2 Wednesday afternoon at the Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven, with interment services to follow in the Beth Israel Cemetery, Dudley Avenue, Wallingford. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Scleroderma Foundation, 89 Newbury St., Danvers, MA 01923.
A period of mourning will be observed at 18 Holly Lane, Wallingford.
HOWARD E. HOUSTON
BLOOMFIELD — Howard Edwin Houston, 87, of Bloomfield, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at Duncaster. Husband of the late Frances (Crawford) Houston, he was born Nov. 2, 1910 in Ryan, Iowa, youngest of Frederick and Ida Houston's three sons. He graduated from Columbia University, Class of 1932, and served in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of captain.
In Connecticut, Mr. Houston served from 1935-54 as the builder and first executive director of the Bradley Home, Meriden. He was elected and served three terms as mayor of Meriden from 1948-51 and 1962-63. Gov. John Davis Lodge appointed him commissioner of welfare from 1953-54. Concurrently his brother, Raymond Houston, was the welfare commissioner for the state of New York. He was a delegate to the Connecticut Constitutional Convention and a member of the Connecticut Republican State Central Committee from 1960-66. In 1992, Mr. Houston was inducted into the Meriden Hall of Fame.
With the U.S. State Department, Mr. Houston served the U.S. Agency for International Development in the capacity of deputy acting director and minister to India from 1955-59 under the ambassadorships of John Sherman Cooper and Ellsworth Bunker and again from 1971-73 under Kenneth Keating and Daniel P. Moynihan, when he was instrumental in the U.S.-owned rupee surplus agreement. He also served in Seoul, Korea from 1970-71 as director of economic affairs and U.S. A.I.D.
Director and trustee positions included Meriden Trust & Safe Deposit Co., Meriden Savings Bank, Connecticut Bank & Trust Co., Colby Junior College, and South Central Community College. He was past president of Meriden Rotary Club, Meriden Music Association and the Meriden Council of Social Agencies. He also served as an officer of World Education, Inc. Morningside House, Meriden YMCA, Ct. Council of Social Work and the Meriden Historical Society. During his life he enjoyed membership in Rotary, American Legion, Elks, Eagles, the National Institute of Social Sciences, American-Korean Foundation, Asia Society, University Club (New York), Shuttle Meadow Club, Hartford Club, Home Club, National Press Club and the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs. Among his awards were the Mugunghwa Medal, Order of Civil Merit from President Park Chung Hee of Korea and the Superior Honor Award of the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State.
He is survived by a son, Attorney Frederick W. Houston, his wife, Eileen, and their children, Clay K. and Justin C. Houston of Newfane, Vt. He is also survived by a daughter, Molly H. Savard, her husband, Edward, and their sons, Nicholas H. and Turner H. Savard.
A service to honor the memories of both Mr. Houston and his wife will be held Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St. (corner of East Main Street and Liberty Street), Meriden, with the Rev. Allan House O'Neil and the Rev. Robert J. Broesler officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours. The Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, Wethersfield, has care of arrangements.
STEPHEN J. WILSON
BRISTOL — Stephen J. Wilson, 53, of 1469 Farmington Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at home.
Born in Holyoke, Mass., he was a graduate of Holyoke High School, class of 1963. He had lived in Springfield, Mass., for several years before moving to Southington in 1975, where he lived until moving to Bristol in 1995. He had recently begun working at B.J. Wholesale Club. He previously was a sales representative for Farrah slacks for 25 years. Before that he was a co-owner of the National Pants Store in Holyoke for many years.
He is survived by two sons, Daniel of Waltham, Mass., and Michael of Bristol; his mother, Ethel (Sussman) Wilson of Northampton, Mass.; two brothers, Mitchell of Springfield, Harvey of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and one sister, Faye Wilson of Northampton.
The funeral was held Sunday, Sept. 20, at B'nai Jacob Cemetery, West Springfield, Mass.. The Harold R. Ascher and Son Memorial Chapel of Springfield was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1111 Elm. St., Suite 9A, West Springfield, MA 01089.
ROSEMARY DEANGELIS
WALLINGFORD — Rosemary Mastroianni DeAngelis, 60, of Anna Drive, Wallingford, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at the Masonic Geriatric Health Care Center in Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Cpl. Richard N. DeAngelis, who was killed in Vietnam in 1968.
Born in New Haven, Sept. 9, 1938, she was a daughter of Rose DeMichele Mastroianni of Wallingford and the late Domenico Mastroianni and was a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of Lyman Hall High School and was employed by Anthem Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Connecticut for 20 years. She was previously employed as a teller by the the Dime Savings and Union Trust banks in Wallingford.
Besides her mother, she is survived by a son, Mark P. DeAngelis of Wallingford; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael A. and Judith F. Mastroianni of Wallingford; a sister-in-law, Rosemary A. DeAngelis, and her mother-in-law, Mary DeAngelis, both of Wallingford; a niece, Donna Mastroianni; three nephews, William and his wife, Karen Mastroianni, Richard and his wife, Tammy Mastroianni and James Mastroianni and his fiancee, Anna Palmieri; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Friday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to the Church of the Resurrection for a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery

CHARLES S. CWIRKA
MERIDEN — Charles S. Cwirka, 76, of Allen Avenue, Meriden, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Meriden. He was the husband of Josephine Sypek Cwirka.
Born in Meriden, March 4, 1922, he was a son of the late Anthony and Anna Soshien Cwirka, was raised in Wallingford and was a Meriden resident for 40 years. He was employed by the Bendix Corp. of Cheshire for many years until his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during World War II, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart after being wounded in action at Iwo Jima.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, David Alan Cwirka of Meriden, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary E. Cwirka.
Funeral services and interment in the State Veterans Cemetery
in Middletown were private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford.
EUGENE GASPARRI
WATERBURY — Eugene Gasparri, 87, of 218 Plank Road, died Thursday, Sept. 24 at St. Mary Hospital. He was the widower of Cecelia Rita (Cipriano) Gasparri, whom he married in 1937.
Mr. Gasparri was born in Rome, Italy, April 18, 1911, the second son of the late Desiderio and Clotilda (Fiore) Gasparri. He came to this country and Waterbury in 1919 and attended Anderson School. At the age of 8, he worked before and after school at his father's hauling and excavating company. In 1926, the company's first truck was purchased, beginning the phase-out of the horse-and-wagon fleet. He expanded the business, E. Gasparri Construction and Trucking Co., which was founded in 1910 by his father. He also operated a downtown restaurant called Gene's Cafe for several years. During World War II he worked at American Brass, first as a machinist, and then a guard, and continued that job until 1955. In 1953, he took over management of the Win Theater, which he purchased in 1942. He immediately equipped the old theater with CinemaScope, the first neighborhood theater to do so. In the aftermath of the flood of 1955, Gene worked 299 consecutive hours as part of the massive cleanup, the first 96 hours gratis. In 1956 he purchased the Tower Theater although it had been hard hit by the flood and operated it and the Win Theater as the only remaining neighborhood movie houses in Waterbury. The state claimed the Tower Theater in 1962 for space needed for Interstate 84. In 1989, after a series of tornadoes hit the city, his people were first on the scene opening the streets closed by felled trees and debris, at no cost to the city.
Gene was involved with politics and the Democratic Party for most of his life, having served on the city's Democratic Town Committee during both Bergin administrations and the Mambruno administration. A longtime supporter of Mayor Edward D. Bergin, he was well-known in local and state political circles. He organized escort cavalcades for Sen. John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1988. A communicant of SS. Peter and Paul Church since 1920 he was a man many clergy looked to for business advice, land and property maintenance, improvement and repair.
Since the early Sixties he had purchased old properties and transformed them into modern apartments and businesses, all in the East End of Waterbury. In 1984 he erected a large apartment complex across the street from his own residence, all immaculately maintained. With a vision belying his years, he acquired the Old Helen's Bakery in the historic Chief Two Moon Building on East Main Street, refurbished it and named it after his late father, "Desiderio's Bakery," which opened March of 1993, staffing it with the same employees who had worked at the former operation since 1968. He managed the overall operations of E. Gasparri Construction Co. and Desiderio's Bakery.
He was a member of the East End Community Club.
He leaves two sons, Robert P. Gasparri and Ronald A. Gasparri, both of Waterbury; three daughters, Jean Boschetti, Joan Hart and Claudia DiStasio, all of Waterbury; a brother, Joseph Gasparri of Waterbury; two sisters, Mrs. Olivia Zarrelli and Mary DeFeo, both of Waterbury; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:45 a.m. from Chase Parkway Memorial / Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury to Our Lady of Loreto Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.
MARIAH N. MEAGHER
WALLINGFORD — Mariah Nicole Meagher, infant daughter of Christine Meagher and Jeffrey Brothers, entered into God's hands Sept. 4, 1998.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her twin sister, Alissa, and brother, Ryan, of Wallingford.
Funeral arrangements were private.

PAULINE MIKSA
WALLINGFORD — Pauline Kondraski Miksa, 83, of Parker Place, Wallingford, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in Meriden.
She was the wife of the late William Miksa.
Mrs. Miksa was born in Wallingford, Jan. 15, 1915, a daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine Trzcinski Kondraski, and had lived in Chester for 25 years and in Homestead, Fla., for 30 years until returning to Wallingford four years ago.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Helen K. and Frank L. Eckert Sr. of Wallingford; her two nieces, Kathryn Vilbrin of Kensington and Susan Haddad of Orange; her four nephews, Joseph Kurcaba and Philip Kelley, both of Wallingford, James Kelley of North Carolina and Frank L. Eckert Jr. of Northford; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her three sisters, Sophie Gagliardi, Laura Kurcaba and Celia Kelley.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Sunday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 8 a.m. from the Yalesville Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Casimir's Polish National Catholic Church, Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. by the Very Rev. Joseph Krusienski, pastor.
Interment will be in Fountain Hill Cemetery, Deep River.
