RICHARD A. FLAVIN
CHESHIRE — Richard A. Flavin, 55, of 380 Mountain Road, owner and operator of Blackie's Hot Dog Stand, and vice-president and general manager of Williams Ford and Newman Chevrolet, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. He was the husband of Susan (Krasnovsky) Flavin.
Mr. Flavin was born in Waterbury, Aug. 17, 1943, a son of the late Timothy M. and Ellin "Nell" (Mahoney) Flavin and was a Cheshire resident for many years. He took over the operation of Blackie's in 1994 after the death of his mother, continuing the business which started in 1928. He was also vice president and general manager of Williams Ford of West Hartford and Newman Chevrolet of East Hartford. He had been associated with the dealerships for the past 15 years and had previously been with Ford Motor Credit Corp. for 15 years. He was a communicant of St. Bridget's Church and was a former member of the Cheshire Jaycee's and a former Little League coach and had been active with the Special Olympics. He was a member of the Farms Country Club. He was the best friend to everyone he met and will be missed by so many family and friends.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Richard A. Flavin Jr. and Timothy M. Flavin; two daughters, Lara K. Flavin and Meghan S. Flavin, all of Cheshire; one brother, Michael A. Flavin of Boulder, Colo.; two sisters, Joan Pritchard of Little Rock, Ark., and Ann Hofferberth of Kansas City, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ellin Messina.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main St., to St. Bridget's Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
JOSEPHINE B. LAMB
SOUTHINGTON — Josephine Borek Lamb, age 91, of Carter Lane in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at her home. She was the wife of the late George Francis Lamb.
Born in Plantsville, Sept. 17, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Bertha (Zimba) Borek. Josephine was raised and educated locally, was a lifelong resident and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
She is survived by her son, Frank Lamb and his wife, Maryann of Southington; her daughter, Margaret Lamb of Cheshire; and her sister, Anna Babich of Southington; three grandchildren including Lori Armstrong; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow in Wonx Spring Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville, has charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Josephine may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
PETER J. PISARZ
MERIDEN — Peter J. Pisarz, 71, husband of Mary C. Scarfo Pisarz, of 29 Jeffrey Lane, died unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in the Veterans Memorial Medical Center.
He was born in Meriden, March 20, 1927, a son of the late George P. and Alice Zabrowski Pisarz and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Pisarz retired from the Napier Co. in 1988, after eight years of employment. He had worked for 27 years for the International Silver Co. until the closure of the Webster-Wilcox Facility in 1980. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served immediately after World War II, then he was recalled to action during the Korean War. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George P. and Anna Marie Pisarz of Newington; two daughters and a son-in-law, Rosemary and Kenneth Parkin, and Catherine Fahey, all of Meriden; six grandchildren, Angela and Peter Pisarz, Kendra and Jillian Parkin and Jonathon and Jaclyn Fahey; three brothers, Alfred Pisarz of Middletown, and Edward and Raymond Pisarz, both of Yalesville; several nieces and nephews.
His funeral services will begin with a gathering in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at 8:15 a.m., with his funeral liturgy in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9 a.m. He will be interred in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, from 4 to 8 p.m. Mrs. Pisarz and her family respectfully requests that expressions of sympathy be directed to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
MARION A. WILSON
WALLINGFORD — Marion A. "John" "Smokey" Wilson, 72, of Ridgewood Road, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, in the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center in Wallingford. He was the husband of Carolyn J. English Wilson.
Born in Asheville, N.C., Feb. 20, 1926, son of the late Carl and Elsie Dockery Wilson, he was a Wallingford resident for 40 years. He had been employed by the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co., in North Haven for 35 years until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Masonic Compass Lodge #9 AF and AM of Wallingford and had served as past president and coach for the Wallingford Babe Ruth League and for the Wallingford Little League.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Donna W. and Albert S. Grant of Melrose Park, Conn.; his three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles A. Wilson of Meriden, Larry P. and Stacey L. Wilson of Wallingford, and Jeffrey A. Wilson and Suzanna D. Watkins of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his 11 grandchildren, Nissa Grant, Phoebe Grant, Alex Grant, Rachel Wilson, Sarah Wilson, Jeremy Marotti, Elizabeth Robinson, Brandon Wilson, Rebekah Wilson, Sam Wilson, and Joe Wilson; a brother, Harold Wilson of Asheville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, William Wilson.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Hubbard Memorial Chapel in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Interment will be private in Walnut Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford. EMMA G. CAHILL
VERNON — Emma G. Cahill, 79, wife of Robert T. Cahill of Merline Road, died Monday morning, Sept. 28, 1998, in the Vernon Manor after a long illness.
She was born in Hartford, Aug. 28, 1919, a daughter of the late Alphonse and Emma Schuster Gardon. She had been a resident of Vernon for the past 15 years, prior to which she had been a resident of Meriden most of her life. She graduated from the Meriden High School class of 1937. She went on to become a registered nurse after having graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing, Hartford, in 1940. During World War II, she was an industrial nurse for the International Silver Co., Meriden. Later she volunteered for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club of Vernon and the AARP. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Vernon and when she lived in Meriden she was a parishioner of St. Mary Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith C. and Michael Traverso of Wethersfield and Barbara C. and William Doucette of Wallingford; six grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren, also two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Gardon of Vernon and Adeline G. Mulquin of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral services will be privately held for the convenience of her family. She will be interred in St. Boniface Cemetery, Meriden. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Meriden. Family members would like to have memorial donations made to the Alzheimer's Association, South Central Connecticut Chapter, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06514.
ALONZO ELMANDORF
MERIDEN — Alonzo Elmandorf, 65, of 192 West Main St., died unexpectedly Thursday Sept. 24, 1998, at his home.
Born in Oneonta, N.Y., Nov. 7, 1933, he was the son of the late John and Irene Elmandorf. He lived in Meriden for over 20 years and had been employed by Veterans Memorial Medical Center, West Campus for a number years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army, and he was a member of the Meriden Senior Citizens Club.
He is survived by four sisters, Anita Nicklaus of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dorothy Anderson of Meriden, Marjorie Williams of New Britain and Evelyn Irene Tyler of Washington , Pa.; two brothers, Fred P. Elmandorf of Oneonta, N.Y., and William M. Elmandorf of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by a brother, Carlton Elmandorf and a sister, Jean Baker.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., with Bishop Terry Stringer of the Greater Bible Way Temple of Praise officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. There will be no calling hours prior to the service.
ROBERT PETERSON
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Robert G. Peterson, 75 of 412 Sunset Drive, Pompano Beach, Fla., died Friday Sept. 25, 1998, at the North Broward Medical Center in Pompano, Fla. He was the husband of the late Beverly E. Peterson.
He was born in Waterbury, June 9, 1923, the son of the late Gustave and Viola Hackbarth Peterson. He was a graduate of the Meriden High School. He was a chief operator for 37 years at American Cyanamid (Cytec), in Wallingford.
He is survived by three sons, Gary Peterson of Winchester, Ore., Jeffery Peterson of Meriden and Gregory Peterson of Wallingford; a daughter, Kimberly Peterson of Ft. Lauderdale; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry Beaver will officiate. Burial will be at the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
GRACE VAN DOREN
MERIDEN — Grace F. (Johnson) Van Doren, 86, of 320 Colony St., died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at the Bradley Home Infirmary in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Van Doren.
She was born in Meriden, Jan. 19, 1912, a daughter of the late Otto and Elizabeth Kitzel Forster.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Meridian Chapter 8 of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Charlotte and Robert Kennedy of Durham, Janice Dale of Southington, Elizabeth and Joseph Posick of Pewaukee, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Margueriete Van Doren of Brewster, Mass.; a brother, Clifford Forster of Chester, Vt.; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Johnson; a grandson, Jim Morris; four sisters, Katherine Puffe, Dolly Flemming, Alice Despins and Gladys Hertwick; six brothers, Jack, Harry, Howard, Otto, Fritz and Carl Forster.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at noon at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Meriden. The Rev. Perry Beaver will officiate. Burial will be at Walnut Grove. Friends may call at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden, Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 164 Hanover St., Meriden, or to the Bradley Home, 320 Colony St., Meriden.
ANTHONY E. GWARA
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Anthony Edward Gwara, 56, died Sept. 5, 1998, in Pensacola as the result of an accident.
Born Aug. 23, 1942, in Meriden, Conn., he was a son of Rita Gwara and the late Anthony Stanley Gwara.
Besides his mother, he is survived by three brothers, William and Richard, both of Meriden, and James of Marblehead, Ga.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at St. Laurent Church, 121 Camp St., Meriden.
Burial will be in St. Laurent Cemetery.
