GLORIA A. ANDERSON
WATERBURY — Gloria A. Anderson, 58, of 440 Meriden Road, died Friday, July 17, 1998, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of C. Edward Anderson.
Born in New Britain on June 7, 1940, she was the daughter of Jennie (Wodecki) Marquis of Rocky Hill and the late Leonard Marquis.
Besides her husband and mother she is survived by two sons, Richard Pizzonia of Middletown and Robert Benjamin of Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother, Ron Marquis of Stratford; two sisters, Linda Clark of Wethersfield and Sheila Rockwell of Fair Haven, Vt.; three grandchildren, four stepchildren, Glenn Anderson of Carolton, Texas , Karen Jacobs of Litchfield, Donna Wheeler of Norfolk and Julie Morrow of Harwinton; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, 99 Bristol St., Southington. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. There are no calling hours. DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, has charge of arrangements.
MARJORIE CRASA
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Marjorie McSwyny Crasa, 76, wife of Dr. Anthony Crasa, died July 7, 1998, at Holmes Regional Center, Melbourne, after a short illness.
Marjorie was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Philmont, N.Y., to the late James and Mary Nimons. She moved to Meriden in 1955 where she worked at Muirison Label in South Meriden and then at the Southern New England Telephone Co. in Meriden. Retiring after 25 years, she moved to Melbourne, Fla., where she resided for the past 12 years.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Dale F. McSwyny of Wolcott, Conn., and Richard G. McSwyny of Old Saybrook, Conn.; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service held at the Wolcott Congregational Church, 185 Center St., Wolcott, Conn., on Sunday, July 26, at noon. Contributions to her memory may be sent to the Wolcott Congregational Church Deacons' Fund.
DOROTHY M. FLEMING
HIRAM, Maine — Dorothy Mae Fleming, 71, died Thursday evening at her home on the Durgintown Road following a long illness. She was the widow of James A. Fleming.
She was born in Oakfield, Maine, a daughter of William and Julia Tibbets Crane. She was educated in Oakfield and graduated from Oakfield High School. She retired in 1992 from the Corometrics Medical Systems in Wallingford, Conn., where she had worked many years as a stock person. She enjoyed feeding birds and gardening.
She is survived by a son, Danial James Fleming of Hiram; two daughters, Deborah Ann Clark of Union, Ore., and Anita Joy Taylor of West Baldwin; two brothers, Eli Crane of Meriden, Conn., and William Crane Jr. of Houlton, Maine; a sister, Mildred Cammeron of Oakfield, Maine. Also surviving are three grandchildren. It was the request of Mrs. Fleming that there be no funeral service. Arrangements by Independent Death Care of Maine, Maple Street, Cornish.
GERTRUDE WEICHSEL
PORTLAND — Gertrude (Gans) Weichsel of Main Street, Portland, widow of Dr. Manfred Weichsel, died Friday, July 17, 1998.
Born in Germany, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Lily Gans. Mrs. Weichsel was a member of the Reform Temple of Forest Hills in New York and Hadassah.
She leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Reva Weichsel of Southington, and Peter and Marcia Weichsel of Encinitas, Calif.; a brother, Helmut Gans of Israel; a sister, Elizabeth Danziger of Monroe, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Barry Rosen, Amy Rosen, Craig Zilhauer and Reed Zilhauer; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Rosen and Joshua Rosen; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 19, 1998, at 9 a.m. in the chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, with interment in Knollwood Park Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y. A memorial period will be observed at the home of her son, John Weichsel, 124 Beechwood Drive, Southington, Sunday and Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southington Jewish Congregation, 38 Castleman Drive, Southington, CT 06489.
FILOMENA M. DUMAS
MERIDEN — Filomena M. Dumas, 71, wife of the late Roland J. Dumas, formerly of 135 Botsford St., died Saturday morning in the Connecticut Baptist Home after a brief illness.
She was born in Meriden, May 22, 1927, a daughter of Rose Barillaro Mule of Meriden and the late Carmelo Mule Sr. She was a lifelong resident. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Besides her mother, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Marie Dumas and Mark and Christine Dumas; and a daughter, Maryanne Dumas, all of Meriden; two grandchildren, Erica and Ryan Dumas; a sister, Grace Mule of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Carmelo Mule Jr.
Her funeral service will begin Tuesday morning, July 21, 1998, at 8:15 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 West Main St., with procession to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for her 9 a.m. funeral liturgy. Interment will be private. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Monday, July 20, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m.
LILLIAN REINER
MERIDEN — Lillian Reiner, 84, wife of the late Harold Reiner Sr., died Friday night, July 17, 1998, in the St. Elizabeth Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., Dec. 28, 1913, a daughter of the late Charles and Christine Andrews Kreuscher. She was a resident of Meriden for the past 48 years. She had been a resident of 108 Hall Ave., for the past 20 years. During the 1950's she owned and operated a pet store on West Main Street in Meriden. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and she was active in the Meriden Senior Citizens. She also enjoyed playing bingo with her friends.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and James R. Reeves Sr. of Cheshire and Marilyn and Donald Miller of Martha's Vineyard; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Linda Reiner Jr. of Darian; eight grandchildren, Wesley Barba, Teri Barba, Tracy Barba, Lisa Golebiewski James, R. Reeves Jr., Tiffany Reeves, Krista Reiner, and Keith Reiner; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters and four brothers.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Monday, July 20, 1998, in the First Congregation Church, Colony Street, at 10 a.m. She will be buried next to her husband in Walnut Grove Cemetery. There will be calling hours in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 West Main Street Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.
SOPHIE E. GRIFFIN
WALLINGFORD — Sophie E. Widstrom Griffin, 90, of North Street, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Meriden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank J. "Snap" Griffin.
Mrs. Griffin was born in Meriden, Feb. 2, 1908, and was a lifelong Wallingford resident. She had been a bookkeeper at the former Union Trust Co. office on North Main Street in Wallingford for many years until her retirement. She and her late husband had been proprietors of the former Griffin's Variety Store on North Colony Street in Wallingford for many years. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church and was a member of the Ladies Guild of the parish, as well as the Holy Trinity Volunteer Group to Regency House of Wallingford, which was the recipient of the Community Citizens Award in 1994, by the Wallingford Grange, in recognition of weekly visits to the home. She was also a member of the AARP, Wallingford Chapter, and the Veterans Memorial Medical Center Women's Auxiliary, and had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross-Wallingford-Meriden Chapter and the Wallingford Holiday for Giving.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to Most Holy Trinity Church Preservation Project, 68 N. Colony St., Wallingford, CT 06492, or to the charity of one's choice.
ADELA W. JOHNSON
NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Adela W. Johnson, 78, of 1201 N.E. 191st. St., a native of Meriden, Conn., wife of the late Alvin A. Johnson, died on Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at VEN COR Hospital in Hollywood, Fla.
Born in Meriden on Dec. 5, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Molly Weisser. Mrs. Johnson lived in Meriden for most of her life, was a 1937 graduate of Meriden High School, and moved to Florida in the mid-1980s. She was for many years vice president and bookkeeper for the family business, Milner's Café. She was a founder and active member of the Actors Playhouse of Meriden, producing and performing in many productions. She delighted family and friends with her artistic talents in cartooning and painting.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Linda Johnson and Irving and Linda Johnson, all of Meriden; seven grandchildren, Kimberly and Richard; Laura, Sarah, Allyson, Paul and Charlie; and by four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Jerome Weisser.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, July 23, at 9 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 11 a.m. at the Waterbury Hebrew Benefit Cemetery
for a graveside service with Rabbi Jay Lapidus officiating. EDNA M. REED
MIDDLEFIELD — Edna M. (Hollman) Reed, 89, of Lake Shore Drive, wife of the late Sidney Reed, died Saturday at the Middlesex Convalescent Center.
She was born in Meriden, daughter of the late John and Sarah (Fulton) Hollman.
She is survived by a son, Sidney Reed of Middlefield; a daughter, Edna Domeniello of Stuart, Fla.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, John Reed.
Funeral services are Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the Biega Funeral Home Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
