Olympia Gajdosik
Olympia "DeeDee" Gajdosik of Westport, wife of the late Charles Gajdosik, died Dec. 25 at Connecticut Health Care of Southport. She was 95.
Mrs. Gajdosik was born June 26, 1911, in Bronx, N.Y., daughter of the late John and Anna Cataldo DelArmy, and had been a longtime resident of both Westport and Weston. Prior to retiring, Mrs. Gajdosik was employed as a sales clerk for 15 years at Greenberg's Department Store and 15 years at the Linen Closet. Both were located on Main Street in Westport. During World War II, she served in the USO Women's Corps and on the Ration Board. Mrs. Gajdosik is a 1928 graduate of Staples High School and was a member of the Saugatuck Congregational Church, where she served on various committees.
Survivors include one son, Karl D. Gates and his wife, Valerie, of Norwalk; five grandchildren, Timothy and Shannon Gates, Arlene and Michelle Gajdosik and Jaqlin Medloc. Mrs. Gajdosik was predeceased by one sister, Lillian Cognato of Weston.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service today at 6 p.m. at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road E., Westport, with the Rev. John Danner officiating. There will be no calling hours. The Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road E., Westport, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Robert D. Hodes
Robert Daniel Hodes of Katonah, N.Y., and Naples, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 18, at the age of 79.
Mr. Hodes, a retired advertising executive, was the father of Debbie Hodes of Westport and grandfather of Lauren and Ali Rouatt.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a graduate of Poly Prep and of Princeton University, where he received his degree cum laude in 1949.
After graduation, Mr. Hodes joined his father, Robert M. Hodes, at the Hodes-Daniel Company, a supplier of direct-mail advertising for the financial community, becoming chief executive officer in 1961. Fifteen years later, the firm was acquired by Ogilvy and Mather Advertising and renamed Ogilvy Mather Direct with Mr. Hodes as its first chairman.
Mr. Hodes also was a past treasurer of the Caramoor Center for Music and Arts in Katonah and had served on its board of trustees.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gerry Heller Hodes; three daughters, Debbie Hodes of Westport, Jean Shaw and her husband, Jeffrey, of New Canaan, and Susie O'Leary and her husband, Richard, of Greenwich; a son, Robert Hodes, Jr., and his wife, Sheila, of St. Louis, Mo., and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Mr. Hodes's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at Caramoor, 149 Girdle Ridge Road.

Craig B. Heatley
Craig B. Heatley of Keene, N.H., formerly a longtime resident of Westport, died on Saturday, Dec. 30, at his home with his family. He was 72.
He grew up in Manhattan and Wading River, N.Y., son of Dorothy and Selden Heatley. He graduated from Taft School and Middlebury College. Mr. Heatley was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.
Mr. Heatley worked for the Lily Tulip, Xerox, Pfizer companies, and was self-employed as a human resources consultant for Vail Associates. For many years he summered at Laurel Lake in Fitzwilliam, N.H.
He was a member of many committees and organizations, including Delta Kappa Epsilon at the national level, and he was president of the Laurel Lake Association, president of the Greater Bridgeport Junior Hockey Association, member of the Board of Governors at the Fairfield County Hunt Club and Westport RTC, and a member and a deacon at the Green's Farms Congregational Church.
An avid polo player, Mr. Heatley played for years at the Fairfield County Hunt Club and Ox Ridge. In recent years he spent the winter months as a spectator at the International Polo Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Mr. Heatley was predeceased by is wife of 39 years, Adrienne "Penny" Heatley, and is survived by his four children, Craig B. Heatley Jr. of Westport, Selden W. Heatley II of Fairfield, Alexandra M. Heatley and Caroline W. Heatley, both of Dedham, Mass.
Services will be held Monday morning at 11 at the Green's Farms Congregational Church in Westport. Friends are invited. There are no public calling hours.
Burial will take place at the family lot in the Green's Farms Congregational Church Cemetery.

Thomas S. Miles
Thomas S. Miles, of Osterville, Mass., died Dec. l4 at age 86.
Mr. Miles, an airline-marketing executive, lived in Westport from 1960-1970. He and his wife, Libby, raised their three daughters, Randi, Becki and Lesli here. They were active in Green's Farms Congregational Church, Staples High School parent groups and scouting.
Mr. Miles was born and raised in Chicago. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, he left Northwestern University and joined the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. He was trained as a multi-engine pilot in Stockton, Calif. On Dec. 3, 1942, he received his wings and commission as a 2nd Lt., and was assigned to the West Coast training company. Many classmates went on to participate in B-17 daylights raids over Europe. More than 80 percent of his classmates were shot down. Mr. Miles never forgot these classmates.
His love of flying helped him use his creativity as an airline marketing executive to develop many airline-marketing programs: the pocketsize Official Airline Guide, the stand-by program and super saver fares. As a marketing consultant for Aspen Airlines, he implemented the Fly Free Club that was the industry's first awards program for frequent flyers. Mr. Miles also served as deputy executive director of Former President Johnson's Discover America Program.
After retirement, Mr. Miles, in support of physician-assisted suicide, wrote Death on Request, USA, a published screenplay for television.
According to his family, Mr. Miles was a loving husband and father. Besides his wife of 64 years, Libby, he is survived by a sister, three daughters, six grandchildren and four great-grand children.

Thomas J. Kydes
Thomas J. Kydes of Norwalk, died Sunday in the Norwalk Hospital. He was 74.
Born in Greece, he was the son of the late John and Parthena Stefanidis Kydes. Mr. Kydes was a Norwalk resident since 1950 and owned Tom Kydes Painting Contractors. He was a longtime member of the Laurel Athletic Club, former member of the Pastime Athletic Club and had a strong passion for fishing.
Surviving are his children, Georgia Kornutik of Westport, Christina Theriault of Fairfield and John Kydes of Norwalk; a sister, Dolly Papadopoulos, of Greece; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Lauren, Thomas, Sophia and John Jr.; two nephews and two nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Gus Kydes.
Services will be held today at 10 a.m. in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 238 West Rocks Road, Norwalk. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Christian Children's Fund or St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
Clark G. Ford
Clark G. Ford died Jan. 19 at age 76. He had lived in Westport since 1959.
Born in Manhattan, son of the late Dolores (Lavin) and George Ford, he graduated from Hackley School and Cornell University.
An ROTC student, upon his 1953 graduation from Cornell, Mr. Ford was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army, served stateside at Fort Sill, Okla., and in Germany, immediately following the Korean War.
In 1954, he married his college sweetheart and classmate, Claire (Moran), at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan.
During his extensive career in advertising, Mr. Ford worked for J. Walter Thompson, SSC&B, Marschalk, and McCann Erickson. Among his most noteworthy professional accomplishments on Madison Avenue were his leadership roles in advertising Coca-Cola products throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East and the 1963 launch of TAB, the Coca-Cola Company's first sugar-free drink. Following his retirement from McCann, Mr. Ford worked for the Coca-Cola Company, at the request of the Coca-Cola senior management team. After retiring from Coca-Cola, Mr. Ford helped launch The Cornell Club-New York.
Mr. Ford was a former member of the Westport Country Playhouse Board of Directors, Westport's Yangzhou, China, Sister City Committee, the Y's Men of Westport/Weston and the Saint Luke Church Ushers Group. He is perhaps best known locally for the award-winning floats he designed and helped construct for Westport's Memorial Day Parade on behalf of the Playhouse and the Y's Men, between 1993 and 2006.
Upon hearing of Mr. Ford's death, Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff commented, "Westport has lost one of its treasures with the passing of Clark Ford. For almost 50 years, he and Claire and their family have been among the town's biggest boosters and contributors to improving the lives of all Westporters.
"Clark's work with the Westport Country Playhouse and the Y's Men of Westport/Weston are most notable. His handiwork in the Memorial Day parade floats brought delight to those who rode on them and those who watched them roll by.
"The Town of Westport deeply mourns the loss of Clark Ford and extends its sincerest condolences to the Ford family."
A loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Ford is survived by Claire, his wife of 52 years; son Jeff and his wife Kerry; daughter Suzie, and granddaughters Blair and Jaime, all of Westport; son Chris and his wife, Eileen, of Norwalk; cousins Lourdes, Nestor and Chuck Salas and their families of Florida; brother-in-law Larry Moran and his wife, Ann, of Michigan; several nieces and nephews; and many caring friends, including, "The Beach Bunch," with whom Mr. Ford and his wife enjoyed dinner at Compo Beach every Thursday night during the summer and monthly at someone's house during the off season, for many years.
The family will receive friends in the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road E., Westport, tomorrow from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will take place Friday at 11 a.m. at Saint Luke Church, 49 Turkey Hill Road N., Westport, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life Luncheon for all family and friends, which will also be held at Saint Luke's.
Interment with full military honors will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Union Cemetery, 4 North St., Rye, NY.

Jean Elizabeth Peterson Rhodes
Jean Elizabeth Peterson Rhodes of Meadow Ridge, Redding, and a Westport resident for 46 years, wife of John Henry Rhodes II, died on Wednesday evening, Jan. 17, at her home. She was 82.
Mrs. Rhodes was born in New York, N.Y., on May 3, 1924, a daughter of the late Arthur Franklin and Evelyn Little Peterson. She graduated from Smith College.
A resident of Redding for the past six years, coming from Westport, Mrs. Rhodes was a member of the Saugatuck Congregational Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, John Franklin Rhodes of Boca Raton, Fla., Steven Joseph Rhodes of Dana Point, Calif., Andrew William Rhodes of Stratford, and James Gibson Rhodes of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Nancy Peterson Webster of Paris, France; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Saugatuck Congregational Church with the Rev. John Danner, senior pastor, officiating. Interment was held in Woodlawn Cemetery, Suffield.

Patricia D. Cleary
Patricia D. Cleary of Bridgeport, formerly of Westport and wife of John T. Cleary, died Saturday afternoon at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport. She was 59.
Mrs. Cleary was born Dec. 10, 1947, in Manchester, N.H., and was a lifelong area resident. She was employed as office manager for Sam Sloat Coins Inc. in Westport. She grew up in Bridgeport and graduated from Central High School in 1965. Mrs. Cleary resided in Westport for 25 years prior to moving back to Bridgeport in 1996.
She was a member of Girl Scouts for more than 20 years, first as a Girl Scout herself and then as a leader of troop No. 347. She was a dedicated and loving mother who always found time to chaperone and attend various school trips and athletic events. She was a member of Christ and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Sunday Hospitality Group and the Common Threads. She was also a member of the Summit Sno Riders in Summit, N.Y., and she loved cross country skiing. She enjoyed walking and as a result she participated in many fund-raising walks. She also enjoyed crocheting Afghans, which she gave as gifts to many relatives and friends for various holidays and events.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of 37 years, includes one daughter, Christine P. Cleary of Derby; one son, Joseph P. Cleary of Berkeley, Calif.; her mother, Yvette Beauregard of Bridgeport; nine brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Kenneth Beauregard.
A memorial service will take place today at 11 a.m., at Christ and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport, CT 06880. Nancy Marie Barna Sabo
Nancy Marie Barna Sabo of Milford, formerly of Westport, beloved wife of S. Ronald Sabo for 47 years, died on Thursday, Jan. 25, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was 68.
Mrs. Sabo was born in Bridgeport on March 5, 1938, to the late Andrew and Mary Fabian Barna and was a Westport resident for many years while raising her family and also had a residence in Pompano Beach, Fla. Mrs. Sabo was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and was a good-hearted social person. She enjoyed dinners with friends, spending time with her family and traveling. Her parents were the owners of the Cafe Barna of Westport, a Hungarian restaurant which featured the music of Rozika and Lazlo.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Stephen R. Sabo Jr. (Crystal) of California and Christopher A. Sabo (Nita) of Madison; a daughter, April Taylor (Rick) of Milford; two sisters, Mary Beth Myers of Arizona and Susan Barna of Westport; two grandsons, Dylan A. and Spencer T. of Madison; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Friday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's Church, 49 Turkey Hill Road N., Westport. Ann Newton Zeisler
Ann Newton Zeisler was born on Nov. 4, 1939, in New Haven to Dr. Louis Newton and Isabelle Frankel Newton. She loved to dance and was on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour in the early days of television.
She graduated as salutatorian from the first graduating class of Andrew Ward High School and attended Smith College. She graduated from Southern Connecticut State College and obtained her B.S. in teaching. She went on to receive a master's in education from the University of Bridgeport and after teaching for a few years and having two children, she returned to school at Touro College in Manhattan to become a physician assistant.
Mrs. Zeisler was a pioneer in a field that was virtually unknown at that time. She first worked at North Central Bronx Hospital, followed by Yale Methadone Clinic. She became one of the first physician assistants in the new open-heart program at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, where she loved to work with the nurses and doctors. After a long career at St. Vincent's, she went to Bridgeport Hospital, where she practiced cardiology for approximately 10 years. She later worked at Hall-Brooke Hospital in Westport as a medical P.A.
Mrs. Zeisler loved challenges. She built her home in Westport in the mid 1970s, where she took on the role of general contractor. She participated in one of the first medical missions in China to treat the sick in the remote sections of the Hunan Province. She traveled extensively and visited very continent in the worked, including Antarctica. On the eve of her first attempt to go to Antarctica, she fell on ice outside her home and broke her wrist. She decided to go the following year, but again fell and broke the same wrist just before departure. Not to be discouraged, she said that the third time was a charm, and the next year she and her husband set off and saw Antarctica.
After a courageous fight with cancer, Mrs. Zeisler died Thursday, Jan. 25, in the Intensive Care Unit of St. Vincent's, surrounded by family and many of the dedicated and loving hospital staff members whom she helped train.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Richard, who was her childhood sweetheart; her daughter, Ellen, a lawyer in London; her son, David, a business manager for recording artists in Nashville; and her brother, Dr. Michael Newton, an ophthalmologist in Manhattan. Mrs. Zeisler's pride and joy were her two grandchildren, Olivia and Betsy, who live with their parents, Jonathan and Ellen, in London. A funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Abraham Green & Son Funeral Home in Fairfield.
Cecelia M. "Boots" Gilleran
Cecelia M. "Boots" Gilleran, of Green's Farms, died Friday, Jan. 26, with her children by her side as she wished. She was 83.
Born in Bridgeport, Ms. Gilleran lived most of her life in Fairfield before moving to Green's Farms, where she retired as postmaster of the Green's Farms Post Office in 1987. During World War II, she served as a recruiter and meteorologist in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to her children and their spouses, James R. and Nancy Gilleran of Fairfield, Susan M. and Arthur Calabrese of Darien, William L. and Sharon Gilleran of Redding, and Luke "Jack" Gilleran and Steven McCay of Fairfield, she is survived by her sister and friend, Betty Mercurio of Fairfield, five grandchildren, one niece and a nephew.
Ms. Gilleran was always happiest relaxing in her home overlooking the water, and she found joyous satisfaction in simple pleasures like visits from family and friends, reading novels, watching movies and television programs recorded on her two TiVos and a single daily Manhattan mixed precisely at 5 p.m.

Waldo Greenspan
Waldo Greenspan, M.D., died quietly at his home in River Edge, N.J., on Wednesday, Feb. 21. He was 83.
He was born in South Amboy, N.J., and he attended Rutgers University. He enlisted in the U.S Navy as an ensign in 1943 and he was sent to amphibious school, achieving the rank of lieutenant junior grade. He served in the Asian Pacific as commander of an LSM and received an honorable discharge in 1946.
Dr. Greenspan finished his undergraduate education and was accepted to Cornell Medical College, graduating in 1952 with honors. He interned and completed his residency in internal medicine and cardiology at the Cornell division of Bellevue Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Greenspan opened an office in 1956 in Hackensack, where he was both a practitioner and professor for more than 40 years until his retirement. He was a consummate and accomplished physician whose commitment to providing the finest possible medical care was evident throughout his illustrious career at Hackensack University Medical Center.
He was a former member of Edgewood Country Club, where he pursued his hobbies of golf and bridge. He will be remembered fondly as a gifted diagnostician and compassionate healer, beloved by his patients, colleagues, friends and family, who said they will miss his brilliant and incisive mind, his fun-loving sense of humor, the sparkle in his eyes and his gentle smile.
Dr. Greenspan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan Bressler Greenspan; his daughters, Jane Greenspan Sims of Old Greenwich, and Nancy Greenspan Wilson of Westport, and their husbands, David Sims and Dr. Lynn Wilson; his grandchildren, Zachary and Emma Sims and Hunter and Tori Wilson. He was the son of the late Violet and David Greenspan, and the brother of Eileen Klegman and the late Lee Friedman.
Services were held Thursday, Feb. 22, at Temple Sholom, 385 Howland Ave., River Edge, N.J. Entombment followed at the Sanctuary of Abraham & Sarah Mausoleum at Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, N.J.

Donna L. Mellen
Donna L. Mellen of Newtown, beloved wife of D.J. Mellen, died on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Danbury Hospital. She was 51.
Mrs. Mellen was born on Dec. 24, 1955, in Bridgeport and was the daughter of the late James A. and Juanita (Moran) Krattenmaker. She was the head cook for Reed Middle School and was a member of the SWC Wrestling Conference. According to friends and family, she was a fantastic cook, decorator and hostess. She was extremely proud of her black bear decoration theme at a vacation home in Jewett, N.Y., as well as many other decorating projects that gave her great joy.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, D.J., include two sons, Nicholas and Joseph Feola of Sandy Hook; one sister, Linda Oppedisano and her husband, Gary, of Trumbull; father-in-law James Mellen and his wife, Laurie, of Easton, and mother-in-law, Judy Slosson and her husband, Lonnie, of Westport; two nephews, Gary and Paul Oppedisano; and grandfather Donald J. Miller and his wife, Carolyn, previously of Newtown. She was predeceased by a brother, Leonard Cagginello, and a sister, Rosemarie Moody.
A funeral service will take place today at 11 a.m. in the Spadaccino Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Tpke., Monroe. Interment will take place in the spring at Newtown Village Cemetery.
Friends greeted the family yesterday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Deborah B. Donnelly
Deborah B. Donnelly, a journalist and columnist from Roxbury, died unexpectedly Wednesday at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York following heart surgery. She was 62.
Mrs. Donnelly was the wife of Sean James Donnelly, vice president of The House of Burgundy Inc. and active member of the Roxbury community. They were married for nearly 40 years.
Mrs. Donnelly was born in Bridgeport on Jan. 8, 1945, daughter of the late Judge and State Sen. J. Kenneth Bradley and the late Ina Trivers Bradley, a writer and civic leader. She grew up on Long Island Sound in Westport and later settled in Ridgefield with her husband in the late 1960s where she was a dedicated volunteer in the community. She served as president of the Ridgefield Women's Committee and a member of the Ridgefield Garden Club.
Mrs. Donnelly's journalistic career spanned more than 30 years. Her opinion columns were published by the New York Times and the Hartford Courant and she was a feature writer for Women's World magazine and Executive Magazine. She wrote editorials on a regular basis for the Westport News and in 1981 she became the daily editorial writer for the Greenwich Time. She later assisted in the startup of a new publication called the Greenwich News and acted as editorialist and columnist.
More than 20 years ago, Mrs. Donnelly and her family moved to Roxbury where she worked as managing editor of the Litchfield Enquirer, building it from a 12-page paper to a 32-page newspaper over five years. She received several New England Press Association awards while at the Litchfield Enquirer and later during her years as managing editor of Town Times in Watertown.
Mrs. Donnelly was the first woman initiated into the Litchfield Rotary Club and was a member of the First Artillery Regiment as their military correspondent. She also produced her own weekly interview show called Around Town with Deborah Donnelly for Cable 5.
In the 1990s, Donnelly was an editor for Patent Trader, a Westchester County, N.Y., newspaper, and then managing editor of The Heritage Villager in Southbury.
Most recently, Mrs. Donnelly reported for Country Life, a special supplement to the Waterbury Republican-American. Her column, "My Word," which focused on life and the people in Litchfield County, was published for nearly 10 years by the Sunday Republican.
Mrs. Donnelly's affection for her community was visible as she served as on the Roxbury Volunteer Recognition Committee, Republican Town Committee and was museum trustee for the Roxbury Historical Society.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy K.D. Tobik of Winter Springs, Fla., and two grandchildren whom she adored, Katie and Emily. She is also survived by her brother, James Peters Bradley of Fairfield, and her sister, Bonnie Bradley of Roxbury. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Lou Colby, of Florida.
A memorial service is scheduled for March 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Roxbury.
