Janet Susan Welch
Janet Susan Welch of Westport, beloved wife of Gary R. Schick, and Westport resident for the past 17 years, died Saturday, Dec. 8, in Westport. She was 59.
Janet was born in Boston, Mass., a daughter of the late James and Mildred (Silver) Welch.
She grew up in New York City. She moved back to Boston then Berkley, Calif. and Woodstock, N.Y. She returned to New York City where she met her husband and continued her education.
Janet earned a degree in biology at the City College of New York, a degree in pharmaceutical sciences at St. Johns University and a doctorate in biopsychology from the Graduate School of the City University.
She did research work at the American Museum of Natural History and Rockefeller University and worked as a pharmacist while earning her degrees. Janet combined disciplines to do work in pharmacovigilance, evaluating information from healthcare providers and patients on the adverse affects of medications; and she assisted many pharmaceutical companies in assessing product issues.
Janet was an unusually intelligent, gifted, incredibly witty, thoughtful, kind, determined, preserving and humane woman. She contributed to numerous social services, and self-help programs, environmental and conservation causes and did volunteer work for animal protection and peace organizations.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one brother, John Welch and his wife, Wilma; one sister, Lauren Welch and two nephews, James and Elsja; her mother in law, Jessie Schick; her brother in law, Sandor; brother and sister in law, Teri and Art and their children, Carrie and Daniel; her cousins, Donna, Paul and Lisa Marchetti and their families.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Monday, Dec. 17, at noon in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road E., Westport.
There will be no calling hours. The Harding Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Michele Arnhold
Michele Arnhold, beloved daughter of Henry and Clarisse Arnhold, a life-long horse lover and top equestrian, died on Dec. 23, 2007, doing what she loved most, riding. She was 56.
Although that is what most people knew her for, she had many other talents and passions as well.
Her love for baking was enjoyed by her friends and relatives who excitedly awaited their annual platter of Christmas cookies, for which she was famous. She was an avid reader and could finish a New York Times crossword puzzle, without cheating, in record time. During any spare moments she could find, she enjoyed skiing with her close friends. She often passed the time at horseshows needlepointing, something she excelled at and loved to do. Over the years her friends and family all benefited from her skill through heartfelt and unique gifts.
Shelly taught pre-school in Bethel for 20 years and also taught at the Berlitz Schools in Westport and Stamford.
She grew up and attended school in New York City. At a young age, after being introduced to horses by her father, she quickly adapted to a life in the country to be close to her critters. She made the trip out to Bethel every weekend and started riding and showing horses.
Later in life, she found great fulfillment in taking young horses and training them to join the highest tier of show winners. Among some of her favorites were Debbie (Joint Account), Robert (Magic Dragon), Nell (Second Glance), Ben (Remarkable), George (Just George), Artie (Masquerade), and many more.
She has touched the lives of everyone in the horse show community, both in Fairfield County and beyond. Shelly spent each and every day, from morning till night, surrounded by the people and horses she loved. She braided, mucked stalls, exercised and trained many horses while never tiring of it.
She has thousands of trophies and ribbons from highly recognized events, at which she was a perpetual icon. She regularly showed at Harrisburg, Washington DC, and Madison Square Garden, plus many other shows on the A circuit. She was well respected by everyone who came to know her through her horses. Her spirit, competitiveness, dedication, and sportsmanship in the equestrian world were unmatched.
Her lifelong friends, Carla and Michele, and later Sue, Sherri, plus a list too long to provide, can attest to her loyalty and commitment to her friends. Shelly was never seen without her companions Kelly and then Jenny, her beloved Corgis. Often she and her horses could be seen wearing her favorite color, purple.
She will be forever missed.
She is survived by her mother, Clarisse, father, Henry, brother, John (Jody), niece and nephew, Julia and Paul, best buddy, Jenny, and all of her friends.
A memorial service is planned for the spring of 2008.

Mary Galza Calandra
A native and long-time resident of the Buffalo area, Mary Calandra (1923-2008) died on Jan. 8, 2008 in Wilton.
Mary was the widow of Nick E. Calandra, also of Buffalo, and taught for many years at Amherst Central Senior High School.
She is mourned by her daughters, Christine Varian of Westport and Barbara Moore of Silver Spring, Md.; her sons-in-law Ed Varian and Spencer Moore; her grandchildren, Nicholas Moore and his wife Nicole, Analissa Varian and Mariclare Varian; great grandchildren Cassidy and Austin Moore; sister-in-law and dear friend Lil Galza and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be said at Assumption Parish in Westport on Jan. 11, 2008 [today] and Mary will be interred beside Nick in Resurrection Cemetery in Newtown.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Mary's name to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Dr. Edward Randy Geringer
Dr. Edward Randy Geringer of Westport, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, in his residence. He was 54.
Dr. Geringer was born in Peekskill, N.Y., a son of Ruth Levine Geringer and the late Seymour Geringer, and was a resident of Westport for 21 years.
Randy graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1975 and from Downstate Medical School (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in 1980 with both an MD and MPH degree. He completed his cardiac residency at Montefiore Hospital and his fellowship in cardiology at St. Luke's.
Randy maintained private practices in Fairfield and Bridgeport.
Dr. Geringer was an avid athlete and sports fan. Besides skiing, golf and other pursuits, he coached basketball and Little League for his sons' teams. He enjoyed watching college and professional football, especially the New York Giants.
In addition to his mother, Dr. Geringer is survived by his devoted wife, Susan Young Geringer, and their beloved sons, Alexander and Matthew, of Westport; his sisters, Lynn (Bruce) Heckman of Millwood, N.Y., Patrice (Jack) Dweck of New Rochelle, N.Y. and Marian (David) Rokeach of New City, N.Y., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services will take place on Sunday at 11 a.m. from The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, with interment following at Sharon Gardens in Valhalla, N.Y. Shiva will be observed at the Geringer residence in Westport on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., continuing on Sunday through Thursday from 6:30 p.m., and ending on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Philip D. Langlois, Sr.
Philip D. Langlois, Sr. of Old Saybrook, formerly of Westport and husband of Mary O'Connell Langlois, died Monday, Jan. 7, in Old Saybrook. He was 80.
Mr. Langlois was born Aug. 28, 1927, in Springfield, Mass., son of the late Walter and Anna Doyle Langlois and had resided in Westport for 30 years before to moving to Old Saybrook seven years ago.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Langlois was director of pensions for several Fortune 500 companies.
Mr. Langlois served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant JG during World War II and Korea. He is a member of the Elks BPOE Logde No. 1784 in Westbrook and the Veterans of Foreign Post 10153 in Old Saybrook.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 55 years include one daughter, Barbara J. Neilsen of Old Saybrook; three sons, Philip D. Langlois Jr. of Bethel, Richard M. Langlois of Easton and Kevin C. Langlois of Old Saybrook; one brother, Walter Langlois of Laramie, Wyo.; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Friday (today) at 1 p.m. at Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Ave., Westport. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery, Green's Farms.

Alice B. Vornkahl
Mrs. Alice B. Vornkahl, wife of the late Henry Vornkahl, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Cambridge Manor in Fairfield. She was 102.
Mrs. Vornkahl was born in Norrkoping, Sweden, on Dec. 7, 1905.
She came to Westport in 1926 and has been a resident for most of her life. She married Henry in 1929 and they were married for 56 years before his passing in 1985.
Alice worked in the Westport school system for many years. She volunteered at the Westport Red Cross and was active in the Westport Senior Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan Bassett of Westport and Carol Caldwell and her husband Thomas of Easton; four grandchildren, Russell Bassett, Randy Bassett and his wife Tara, Christine Lage and her husband Michael, and Caralyn Kempenich and her husband Steven; eight greatgrandchildren, Matthew Caldwell, Christian Bassett, Cameron and Brendan Bassett, Charles and Ella Lage, and Lilly and Sophie Kempenich. Alice is also survived by nieces and nephews and her family in Sweden.
In addition to her husband, Alice was predeceased by one granddaughter, Cynthia Caldwell.
The family thanks the staff at the Cambridge Manor for the loving care they gave to Mrs. Vornkahl during her stay.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Monday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 160 Hill Farm Road, Fairfield. Interment will be private. There will be no calling hours. The Harding Funeral Home in Westport is in charge of arrangements.

Sara Anne Moss Herz
Sara Anne Moss Herz, a longtime Weston resident, died May 7 in Norwalk. She was a clinical psychologist, and an active contributor to the local community.
Born in 1940 at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, she was the daughter of Arthur and Naomi Moss. Her childhood was spent in the Bronx and Queens, N.Y.
She graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in English literature and spent several early years of her career in the pharmaceutical advertising industry and as a technical editor for Bell Laboratories in Whippany, N.J.
When her two children reached school age, Mrs. Herz returned to school and graduated with a master's and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Ferkauf School of Yeshiva University in New York. After completing her post-doctoral training at the Veterans Administration hospital in West Haven, in conjunction with Yale University, Mrs. Herz opened a private clinical practice in psychology.
Mrs. Herz had offices in Westport, Greenwich and Waterford, where she treated adults and adolescents. She was also an adjunct professor of psychology at Southern Connecticut State University.
In addition to her clinical work, she was deeply committed to contributing to and improving the community. For many years, she served as president of the board of directors for Connecticut Renaissance, a drug and alcohol residential treatment program with facilities throughout Connecticut. She was also a volunteer interviewer at the Fortunoff Holocaust Memorial Archives for more than 20 years, where she contributed substantially to the institutionalization of historical video archives of interviews with holocaust survivors.
In addition, she served for many years on the board of directors of the American Cancer Society in Fairfield County. She was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award by the American Cancer Society of Connecticut in 1995.
Mrs. Herz was also involved, on a pro-bono basis, in providing therapy and counseling to Sept. 11 survivors and she contributed her time helping to cook for the homeless for the Interfaith Housing Center in Westport.
Mrs. Herz was known in the community as an athlete and she was a committed runner since 1976. She completed 29 marathons throughout the United States, along with numerous shorter road races. She was a devoted member of the Pequot Runners of Southport, and was also a member of the New York Road Runners Club.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Jack; her daughter, Allison Passero and her husband, Joseph; her son, Stephen and his wife, Jamie; and her grandchildren, Charlie and Eliza, all of Evanston, Ill.
She was a member of Temple Israel 14 Coleytown Road, Westport, where the funeral will be held today, at 11 a.m.

Edna P. Kearns
Edna P. Kearns, a former Staples High School teacher, died April 15 at Jenkins Memorial Health Facility in Wellston, Ohio. She was 98.
Born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., July 21, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Sherman James Plummer and Frances Belle Younker Plummer.
She received her degree from Oberlin College in 1931 and her master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University.
She moved to Westport in 1937, where she taught Latin at Staples High School until her retirement in 1971. She returned to Wellston in 1979 where she attended the Hope United Methodist Church and belonged to the Southern Hills Arts Council, the Vergilian Society of America and the Wellston Historical Association.
Survivors include friends, former students and colleagues.
She was predeceased by her husband, John W. Kearns; and her sister, Olive Plummer Townsend, and brother-in-law, Lawrence W. Townsend.
A graveside service was held April 18 at Ridgewood Cemetery with family friend Jason R. Winters officiating. She requested that contributions be made in her memory to a favorite charity.
Gordon C. Keirle
Gordon C. Keirle of Ballwin, Mo., husband of Mary Alma Mueller Keirle, died Sunday, May 4, in Norwalk Hospital. He was 84.
Mr. Keirle was born in Alton, Ill., Dec. 15, 1923, son of the late Carl J. and Eunice (Simms) Keirle and has been a resident of Ballwin for 31 years. Prior to retiring, Mr. Keirle was district manager for the A/C Delco Division of General Motors.
He attended Alton High School, and graduated from of Shurtleff College in Alton in 1952. Mr. Keirle performed graduate work at Washington University in St. Louis. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in both the European and Pacific Theatres.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 62 years, are two daughters, Alyson Angus and her husband, Peter, of Westport and Neale Rebman and her husband, Don, of Glendale, Mo.; two sisters, Carol Wedemeier and her husband, Walter, of St. Louis, Mo., and Dixie Keirle; four grandchildren, Drew, Jack and Alex Angus, and Berkeley Rebman; sister-in-law, Jeanne T. Keirle of Bridgeton, Mo.; brother-in-law, Dr. George Mueller of Naples, Fla.; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Brothers Glenn and Robert Keirle and sister Noel (Toby) Holthaus predeceased Mr. Keirle.
A celebration of Mr. Keirle's life will take place in Missouri, Saturday, May 10, at 3 p.m. Interment will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis on Monday, May 12, at 1:15 p.m.

PINE PLAINS —Adam Leo Blahut, 74, of Hicks Hill Road, passed away on Dec. 9, 2005, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.
He was the husband of the late Helen Dembowski, whom he married on Jan. 20, 1957, in Brooklyn. She passed away on April 4, 2005.

RHINEBECK — Elizabeth B. Kirschner, 91, previously of Bangall, N.Y., passed away Dec.11, 2005 at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.
She was the widow of Arthur Kirschner, who passed away on July 25, 1979.
