Ivan Wood

Ivan Lewis "Woody" Wood, 89, of Plainville, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Jan. 26, 2005. He was the husband of Kathryn (O'Dea) Wood.

He was born in Washington, Vt., son of the late Walter I. and Annie F. (MacDonald) Wood. His athletic career began at Randolph High School in Vermont, where he was captain of the basketball and baseball teams.

After graduating in 1933, he went on to attend Springfield College, where he lettered in varsity baseball, basketball and football.

In 1937, he moved to Plainville and taught biology and physical education at Plainville High School.

In addition, he coached basketball, track and was the assistant football coach and director of intramurals, a position he held until 1943. During this time, he met and married Kathryn O'Dea.

In 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving three years as a lieutenant during World War II on the SS Vitruvius and SS Jesse Applegate.

He was awarded the Commendation Ribbon, and American, European and Pacific Theatre medals.

Returning to Plainville in 1946, he resumed his teaching and coaching duties as director of athletics and physical education at PHS, adding golf, swimming, and gymnastics to his list of coaching responsibilities. He also served for two years as assistant principal.

From 1956 to 1976, he held the position of principal at PHS.

His accomplishments during his career include publishing the Physical Education Guide for Plainville schools, and the Physical Fitness Index and Strength Index as Indicative Success in Athletics, organizing the Plainville Recreational Program, the Plainville Little League, several athletic programs at PHS, and lecturing at physical education and recreation national conventions.

He received various honors, including the Century Club award for more than 100 victories, the Recognition Award from his former players, Sportsman of the Year from the Plainville VFW, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Citation, National Coaches Association and CHSCA Distinguished Service Awards, Sportswriters Alliance Gold Key Award, numerous tournament dedications, and in 1974, dedication of the Ivan L. Wood Gymnasium at PHS by the Plainville Board of Education.

In 1988, he was inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and most recently, he was honored with the Presidential Award and a scholarship in his name at Central Connecticut State University.

While dedicating himself to helping countless students over the years, Woody held various positions and served on boards in several civic organizations, including the Plainville Community Food Pantry, Plainville Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America Area Council, Hartford County and Plainville YMCA, New Britain Catholic Family Service, Plainville Youth Council, Park Board, Rotary Club, VFW, Republican Town Committee, Charter Revisory Committee, and the Plainville Student Loan Fund.

He was a former member of the Our Lady of Mercy Church Board of Education, and was a trustee for the church.

Besides his wife of 65 years, he leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Robert Zahnke of West Lafayette, Ind., and Jane and Courtland Wilson of Avon; three grandchildren, Matthew Zahnke, Dana Zahnke Gant and her husband, Jason, and Lori Zahnke Jones; three great-grandchildren, Cory, Taylor, and Kathryn; a brother, Austin Wood of Montpelier, Vt.; a sister, Corolyn Osha of Randolph, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Leyland, Stanley, Lyndell and Hazen Wood, and a sister, Doris Bell.

The funeral was held Jan. 31 at Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Burial with military honors was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

PRISCILLA ARTIBANI

Priscilla Artibani, 82, of Plainville, widow of Severino J. Artibani, died on May 6, at New Britain General Hospital.

She was born April 3, 1921, in Bristol, a daughter of the late George and Alice (Merrill) Brackett.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Randall J. and Sarah Artibani of Plainville; a daughter Pamela Kowalczyk; a brother Wallace Brackett of Bristol; three sisters, Althea Frasse of Massachusetts, Marjorie Radcliff and Beverly Sherman, both of Bristol; four grandchildren, Shaylene and Brandon Artibani, Chris and Erin Kowalczyk; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Rachel Mayes, Marion Martineau and Frances Wagner; and two brothers, Morris and Harold Brackett.

Funeral services were held on May 9 at the O'Brien Funeral Home, Forestville.

Burial followed in Forestville Cemetery.

ESTHER A. WHITE

Esther A. (Pearson) White, 86, of Plainville, died on May 9 at Plainville Health Care Center.

She was born in New Britain on Dec. 6, 1916, was employed by Wasley Products and was the administrative assistant to the dean of administration at Tunxis Community College.

She volunteered for the Animal Rescue Foundation, Plymouth.

She leaves her three granddaughters, Jennifer, Katherine and Sarah Ostman.

She was predeceased by a son, John Ostman.

Funeral services will be held privately.

Bailey Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

THOMAS R. PERNICIARO

Thomas R. Perniciaro, 76, of Plainville, husband of Helen (Buraczynski) Perniciaro, died on May 23 at New Britain General Hospital after fighting a battle with cancer.

A New Britain native and former resident, he moved to Plainville in 1978.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he was employed at General Electric in Plainville for 38 years, retiring in 1992.

While working at GE, he owned 2 All Seasons Liquor Stores from 1970 to 1987 and later owned and operated Nutrition Kingdom of Plainville for the past 14 years.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, New Britain, and was a former Church Council member.

He was also a member of VFW Post #511, New Britain, and Friendship Lodge, AF&AM, Southington.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Robert G. Perniciaro, and his wife, Annette, of Manchester; two daughters, June O'Leary, and her husband, Robert, of Southington, and Nancy Giannini and her husband, John, of New Britain; two brothers, Samuel Perniciaro, and his wife, Muriel, of Plainville, and Frank Perniciaro and his wife, Theresa, of Golden, Colo.; a sister, Vita Talar, and her husband, Stanley, of Oceanside, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Robert T. Perniciaro, Gwen Hyde and her husband, Thomas, Douglas, Katie and Eileen O'Leary, and Gabriel, John and Alixandria Giannini; two great-granddaughters, Madison and Lindsay Hyde; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother and sister, Anthony Perniciaro and Connie Williams.

Funeral services were held on May 27 at First Lutheran Church, New Britain.

Burial with military honors was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Southington.

PETER W. HAWKINS

Peter W. Hawkins, 72, of Plainville, died on May 23 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford.

He was born in England on Dec. 23, 1930, the son of the late William and Rose Hawkins.

He served in the Royal Navy during World War II and built aircrafts in England before moving to the United States about 40 years ago.

He leaves his wife of 46 years, Doris (Stuckey) Hawkins of Plainville; two sons, Christopher Hawkins of Plainville, and Ralph Frampton of Spain; and a step-brother, Ted Warburton of England.

He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Barbara Hawkins.

Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

SECONDO VARESIO

Secondo Varesio, 89, of Bristol, formerly of Plainville, died on May 25 at Sheriden Woods in Bristol.

He was the widower of Alice (Sylvester) Varesio, who died in November.

He was born in Asti, Italy, on May 21, 1914, the son of the late Oliver and Marcella (Colonna) Varesio.

He was employed by Stanley Works for more than 40 years.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church and the Italian Independent Political Club, Berlin.

He leaves his two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Susan Varesio, of Bristol, and Richard and Patricia Varesio of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on May 29 from Bailey Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

HARRY C. SWANSON

Harry C. Swanson, 97, of Plainville, died on May 24 at home surrounded by his family.

He was the husband of Esther (Gustafson) Swanson.

Born on May 28, 1905, in New Britain, he was the son of the late Adrian and Jennie Swanson.

He lived in Plainville since 1910.

He was formerly employed as comptroller at Connecticut Printers and was a member of Bethany Covenant Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Bonnie Swanson of Plymouth, Mass., Peter C. and Kathy Swanson of Hingham, Mass.; a daughter, Christine Swanson, of Brookline, Mass.; four grandchildren, Gunnar, Inga, Julia and David; and a great-grandchild, Natalie Swanson.

He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, Gunnard, Clarence, Elin, Ruth, Sigrid, Ellen, Evelyn and Esther.

A memorial service was held on May 27 at Trinity Covenant Church.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in West Cemetery, Bristol.

MILDRED L. RAY

Mildred L. Ray, 90, of Plainville, widow of William A. Ray, died on May 26 at the Sub-Acute Center, Forestville.

She was born in Bristol on April 4, 1913, daughter of the late Harold D. and Gertrude (Ender) Lafayette.

She was a longtime West Haven resident before moving to Plainville in 1974.

She and her husband formerly owned a restaurant, and she also worked as a waitress and at the Pine Plaza drug store.

She was a member of the Church of Our Savior, Veterans of Foreign War and the Plainville Senior Citizens Center.

She was a Gold Star Mother; in 1952 her son, William, A. Ray Jr., was killed during action in the Korean War.

She is survived by a brother, Harold E. LaFayette of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Harriet Rinaldi of Plainville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and burial were in West Cemetery, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Bristol VNA Hospice program or Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., Plainville 06062. Funk Funeral Home, Bristol, was in care of arrangements.

BARBARA M. MADORE

Barbara M. Madore 36, of Plainville, died on May 28 at New Britain General Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in New Britain on Jan. 14, 1967, she was the daughter of Normand J. Madore Sr. and the late Rena (Roy) Madore.

She had been employed by Economy Springs, Southington.

Besides her father of Southington, she is survived by a special aunt, Verna Madore, of Southington; a sister, Phyllis, and her husband, John Lausier, of Southington; three brothers, Normand J. Madore Jr., Robert and his wife, Darleene Madore, and David and his wife, Tina Madore all of Plainville; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral was held on May 31 from DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington, to St. Thomas Church for a Mass. Burial was in St. Thomas Cemetery.

JOHN T. WYNKOOP

John Thomas Wynkoop Sr., husband of Maria Lockhart Wynkoop and resident of Plainville for more than 60 years, died on May 29 after a long illness.

Born in Kingston, N.Y., on May 5, 1916, he was a son of the late Arthur and Lucina (Snow) Wynkoop.

He was a master electrician for more than 27 years, an instructor for the Maintenance Tool and Die Apprentice program at General Electric in Plainville and was awarded the Gerald L. Phillippe Award from the General Electric Foundation for distinguished public service in 1972.

He was a founding member of the G.E. Credit Union, now known as United Business Industry Federal Credit Union, where he served for many years on the Board of Directors.

In World War II he saw combat in the South Pacific as a U.S. Marine.

A scoutmaster for Troop #30 in Plainville and past district commissioner of the Great Plains of Long Rivers Councils, he was awarded The Silver Beaver Award in 1972.

He served the town of Plainville as an auxiliary policeman, a longtime member of the Democratic Town Committee, a member of the Friends of the Library and the Plainville Senior Citizens Center and was a voting machine mechanic for 47 years.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church, and past 32 Degree Mason with the Ionic Lodge, New Britain.

He is survived by three sons, John T. Wynkoop Jr, from his first marriage to Alice (Fraust) Wynkoop, and his wife, Louise of San Antonio, Texas; Edgar A. Wynkoop and his wife, Kathleen, and Sidney Wynkoop, all of Plainville; two daughters, Margaret Musgrove of Baltimore, Md., and Sharon Wynkoop of Bristol; four sisters, Hazel Guimares of Branford, Marion Miller, Gloria DeGroate and Charlotte Williams, all of Waterbury; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many step-children and their families; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Geneva Jackson of Bristol.

He was predeceased by four brothers and his second wife, Margaret Ruth (Holden) Wynkoop.

Funeral services were held on Monday from Bailey Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Burial with military honors was in West Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to: Friends of the Plainville Public Library, 56 East Main St., Plainville 06062.
