Lida Kovac

July 05, 1948 - July 09, 2010

Lida Nosik-Kovac, age 62 of Trumbull, beloved and devoted mother to Michael Kovac, widow of Michael Kovac Sr., passed away peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, July 9, 2010. Lida was born in Barcelona, Venezuela to the late Odarka and Nicholas Nosik. In 1962, she emigrated with her family to the United States where she attended Southern Connecticut State University, receiving her bachelors degree in Spanish. She then attended Fairfield University where she received her masters in Psychology with a Sixth Year Teaching degree. She taught at various elementary schools and adult education institutions in the Fairfield county and Greater Bridgeport areas. She was multi-lingual, using this valuable asset to aid her in the teaching of many diverse communities throughout her career. Her passions included travel, cooking and her friends and family whom she loved very deeply and faithfully. She was also a devout animal lover and humanitarian. Lida was a sociable, hard working, determined and loving individual. She will be truly missed by all those who knew her. Lida is survived by her son, Michael; sister, Anna; brother-in-law, Vinny DiVito of Trumbull; niece and nephew, Nadya and Joe; her beloved partner, Darren; close friend, Jane; and family in Serbia. May she rest in peace.

Joanne Lurix

February 28, 1948 - November 17, 2009

Joanne Lurix, age 61 of Monroe, beloved wife of Ernest Lurix, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at St. Vincent's Hospital with her loving family by her side. Joanne was born in 1948 to Josephine Skerencak and the late John Skerencak of Shelton. Joanne was employed by Stop & Shop with almost 25 years of service before her retirement as a CDH from the Watertown store. Prior employment was at Boiler Repair as a bookkeeper. Joanne was an avid reader and spent many happy hours engrossed in her favorite books, especially Nora Roberts novels. Joanne also liked to take day trips to museums and to local events. Survivors in addition to her husband, she leaves two devoted sons, Phillip Lurix and his partner, Carmen Murillo of St. Cloud, Fla. and Justin Lurix of Monroe. Joanne is also survived by two brothers, John Skerencak Jr. of Hacienda Hights, Calif. and James Skerencak and his wife, Kim of Shelton; and many nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by her daughter, Jackie. Another angel had arisen to join her.

Friends may greet the family on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St., Bridgeport. On Friday, her funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. for burial in St. John's Cemetery, Monroe.

George Saparito

August 20, 1915 - December 30, 2009

George A. Saparito, age 94 of Greenwich, previously of Bridgeport, beloved husband to the late Claire Geib Saparito, died peacefully, December 30, 2009. Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., he was the son of the late Luigi (Louis) and Madeline Saparito. A resident of Bridgeport for many years, he was a retired machinist for Remington Arms. Survivors include his niece, Catherine Sellian of Armonk, N.Y. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Saparito.

Jean Regan

June 22, 1936 - March 11, 2011

Jean G. Reagan, age 74 of Monroe, lifelong partner of Ellie Knutson, died peacefully on Friday, March 11, 2011 in her residence. Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Jankowski Sarno. A resident of Monroe for more than 40 years, she was a retired nurses aide for St. Joseph's Manor where she had worked for more than 15 years. An avid Yankee fan, she enjoyed especially watching her favorite short stop, Derek Jeter and pitcher, Andy Pettite, play. A lady who enjoyed cooking, but most of all preparing macaroni salad for her family. Survivors also include her children, Stacey Williams and husband, Clay of Bridgeport, Joseph Reagan of Monroe, Daniel Reagan of Arvada, Colo.; four grandchildren, Zachary Williams, Charlie Mauro, Shawn Reagan, and Elizabeth Reagan; one great-grandson, Nicholas Mauro; and several nieces and nephews

Jan Nartowicz

Jan Nartowicz, age 60 of Stratford, beloved husband of 30 years to Ewa Sadowska Nartowicz, died peacefully on Thursday, January 27, 2011. Born in Radule, Poland, he was the son of the late Stanislaw and Aldona Wasilewska Nartowicz. A resident of Stratford since 1998, he was a former employee of Electric Cable Assembly of Shelton where he worked for many years. Survivors in addition to his beloved wife, Ewa, are his four children, sons, Robert Nartowicz, Krzysztof and his wife, Sylwia, Bogdan Nartowicz; a daughter, Jolanta Nartowicz, all of Stratford; two brothers, Jozef and wife, Jadwiga Nartowicz of Monroe and Tadeusz and wife, Anna Nartowicz; his sister, Irena and husband, Edward Olechno of Stratford; several nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and nephews.

Florence Dougiello

April 05, 1917 - July 21, 2010

Florence Dougiello, age 93 of Ossining, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. Born in Bridgeport, she resided in New York for 10 years. She was a graduate of Butler Business School and a member of its sorority, Beta Iota Sigma. Florence worked for the Navy Defense Logistic Agency at Sikorsky Aircraft for 32 years. Survivors include her beloved daughter, Carol A. Cappiello and husband, Richard of Ossining, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Christopher Cappiello of New York, Rod Cappiello and wife, Gretchen of Wilmette, Ill. and Kendall Cappiello of Winter Park, Fla.; great-grandson, Louis J. Cappiello II; a brother, Charles J. Dougiello of Bridgeport; and a sister, Ann Dougiello Eckert of Arizona. She was prede-ceased by her parents, Kazimieraz and Nellie Ross Dougiello and brother, Edmund Dougiello.

A graveside service will take place on Friday at 1 p.m. in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. A memorial service will take place at a later date in the main chapel of the Maryknoll Catholic Foreign Missions in Ossining, N.Y. Dean Hatzis

May 02, 1980 - March 14, 2009

Dean Thomas Hatzis, Esq, of Cutler Bay, Fla., formerly of Trumbull entered into peaceful rest in New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital on Saturday, March 14, 2009. Born in Cape Canaveral, Fla., on May 2, 1980. He was the son of Gus and Pamela Furjesz Hatzis. Dean graduated from Trumbull High School, University of Massachusetts in Boston. He received his MBA from Suffolk University in Boston and his Law degree from Nova Southeastern University. He was licensed to practice law in Florida as well as New York. His studies took him to Turkey, Russia, Hungary and Egypt affording him to become an avid traveler visiting about one third of the countries in the world. Having a love of music, he had been a member of the Trumbull Golden Eagle Marching Band and the Connecticut Hurricanes. While attending law school, he started a D.J. and Karaoke Company. Having been a boy scout he earned the highest honor that of being an Eagle Scout, he brought those qualities of service to the communities of Florida giving his time and energy as an attorney and as an accomplished musician and lover of music. A boating enthusiast, he was also an avid Yankee fan. A religious person who was an altar boy in his youth, he was a dedicated member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Survivors in addition to his devoted parents, Gus and Pamela Hatzis, include many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Alexander Wroblewski

Alexander Wroblewski, age 87 of Trumbull, previously of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Mary Kulikowski Wroblewski, died peacefully on Monday, October 4, 2010 after a lengthy illness. Born in Poland, he immigrated to the U.S. in his early years. He was a retired employee of General Electric where he worked as a painter. He was a member of the White Eagles Society, Group 315. Survivors in addition to his beloved wife are his three devoted step-daughters, Lydia Mangini of Waterbury, Mary Cipos of Trumbull and Rose DeBernardo of Florida; a sister, Margo Krzystztof; and special nepehw, Andrzej Wroblewski of Poland; and several other nieces and nephews.

Steve Stavros

December 02, 1950 - January 04, 2010

Steve G. Stavros, age 59 of Fairfield, beloved son of George and Georgia Gianno-poulos Stavros, died peacefully on Monday, January 4, 2010. Born in Voutsara, Greece, he was a resident of Fairfield for the past 43 years. A former employee of Goodwill Industries, he was the supervisor for clothing and clothing distribution. Steve was an excellent cook, enjoying preparing foods for family and friends. Appreciating the outdoors, he was an avid landscaper. Survivors in addition to his parents, are a brother, Thomas Stavros of Fairfield; sisters, Olga Leavitt and husband, Peter of New Jersey and Deena Gonis and husband, Antonios of California; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

James Makraus

April 20, 1921 - October 28, 2010

James Makraus, age 89 of Stratford, died peacefully in his home on October 28, 2010 with his wife, Sara (Peggy), his beloved wife of almost 51 years by his side. He is survived by a son, James H. Makraus of Stratford and his stepchildren, Dale Johnston and Amanda Squires. He also has two daughters, Elizabeth Makraus and Patricia Nucifora and husband, Robert, all of Stratford. In addition, he has three granddaughters, Kimberly Nucifora of New Haven, Heather Nucifora of Seattle, Wash. and Amanda Nucifora of Stratford; his loving sister, Katherine Lenihan; his brother, Charles, both of Stratford; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceaced by brothers, Gus and George. James retired after many years of employment from the Town of Stratford. In his younger years, he was a wonderful dancer, a coin collector and an avid gardener. He also enjoyed fishing and was a great cook. In his later years, he loved spending quiet time at home with his family who will miss him very much. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice nurse, Evelyn, and the wonderful home health aides who were so caring and compassionate during a difficult time. Edward C. Grabowski, age 58 of Bridgeport, died peacefully in his residence on March 16, 2011. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Chester and Jane Mrozek Grabowski. He was a former employee of Sikorsky. Survivors include his children, Nicholas and Amanda Grabowski of East Haven; two sisters, Carolyn and Janice Grabowski, also of East Haven; uncle and aunt, Chester Mrozek and wife, Esther of Trumbull. Myriam Norwood

Myriam (Alexandra) Hopper Norwood, beloved wife or the late Paul J. Giatas Sr., fell asleep with the Lord peacefully with her family at her side, Friday, December 11, 2009. Born in Porterville, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Winona Burton Hopper. A resident of Trumbull since September 2004, she was a retired supervisor for Vitramin where she worked for many years. A hard working and conscientious individual, she had worked for many years at her husband Paul's side at the Rivoli Soda Shop located on Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport. An activist, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, conservationist and environmentalist for the Natural Habitat, a philanthropist, she would often be seen helping and feeding the poor. A talented seamstress, she won many awards for her custom designs and her seamstress ability. Survivors include her devoted family, her son, Rev. Deacon Paul J. Giatas Jr. of Oakland, R.I.; daughter, Joy O. Paschalidis of Trumbull; two granddaughters, Ilianna Paschalidis of Trumbull and Christina Ann Giatas of Lincoln, R.I.; a brother, Ike Hopper; sisters, Madge Geotsi, Mary Ellen Bright and Jeanette Winkler, all of Mississippi and Bernice Guest of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

October 11, 1939 - January 16, 2009

Lydia Caban, age 69 of Milford, beloved daughter of Susana Acevedo and the late Miguel Caban, died peacefully at home with her immediate family at her side, Friday, January 16, 2009. Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, she was a Bridgerport resident for several years. A retired beautician, she was a devout Jehovah Witness who loved and served Jehovah. Lydia was a sensitive and caring woman who was loved by many and who will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. She is survived by her devoted and loving children, Janet Zove and husband, Douglas of Milford, Santiago Rodriguez and wife, Elizabeth of Bridgeport, and Carlos Rodriguez and wife, Evelyn of Puerto Rico; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Jerry, Jonathan, Natasha and Dariel; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine and Jeremiah; a brother, Angel Caban of Bridgeport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

July 20, 1914 - October 18, 2010

Ann M. (Burns) Ulatowski, age 96, of Bridgeport, beloved wife of 59 years to the late John J. Ulatowski Sr., died peacefully on Monday, October 18, 2010 with her devoted family at her side. Born in Bridgeport she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Bessie McQueeney Burns. A lifelong area resident, she was a former member of the Gaelic American Club. A kind and compassionate individual who was always ready, willing and available to lend a hand when called upon. A religious person her life was centered upon her God, family and the community. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her son, John J. Ulatowski Jr. of Bridgeport; a daughter, Sister Maureen Ulatowski S.S.N.D. ( School Sisters of Notre Dame) of Wilton; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers,, James and John Burns; sister, Catherine Hansen. A special note of deep gratitude and appreciation to the staff of St. Joseph Manor in particular the 5th floor and the clergy for their pastoral care of Ann's religious needs.

Robert Tiberio Jr.

November 08, 1959 - October 11, 2010

Robert J. Tiberio Jr. (Bobby) age 50 of Bridgeport, passed away on October 11, 2010. Bobby is survived by his loving parents, Robert Sr. and Mary Ann (Kozlowski) Tiberio of Fort Pierce, Fla.; brother, Stephen and his wife, Beth of Shelton; nieces, Alyssa, Lauren; and nephew, Stephen Jr. He also leaves several close aunts, uncles and cousins. Bobby was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Trumbull and Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. He served in the United States Marine Corps and the Army National Guard. He was employed by the City of Bridgeport Board of Education as a steam fitter and was a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local Union 777. Bobby had a kind and generous heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was known for his ability to make others laugh and enjoyed a good practical joke. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, especially Vincent Ingrassia, his lifelong friend.

Stella Chapar

October 24, 1931 - October 01, 2010

Stella Nastu Chapar of Stratford, passed away on October 1, 2010 at St. Vincent's Medical Center following a brave struggle. She was born in Bridgeport on October 24, 1931 to John and Mary Memu Nastu. She was a lifelong member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church. She graduated Bassick High School in 1949. She had a marvelous singing voice, often joined in perfect harmony with her family on stage and off. She worked as a teacher's aide at Wooster Jr. High School in Stratford for many years which was something that she treasured. She was very athletic and had a great sense of humor. She loved animals and enjoyed gardening. She could dance like a professional and remembered well the glamour of the old Pleasure Beach Ballroom and the Ritz Ballroom where she danced to the Big Bands. Like so many of her generation, she lived through the Great Depression, watched immigrant parents achieve success in their new land, sent loved ones to war and waited for them to come home, raised a family, saw men first walk on the moon, worked hard without complaint and learned to use the Internet to send messages to her friends and family. She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Albert Chapar Sr.; her sons, Thomas and Albert Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Nadine Kirma Chapar; grandchildren, Sophia, Natalia and Helena Chapar; her loyal sisters, Frieda and Catherine Nastu; sisters-in-law, Mary Moran and husband, Steve and Nassa Sam and husband, William; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved greatly. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Nastu; her remarkable brothers, Aurely (Ray), Peter and Thomas; her sisters-in-law, Sofia Cipu Nastu and Rose Nastu; her German Shepherd dog, Katrina, who gave her much joy.

John Hissick

December 31, 1936 - December 30, 2009

John (Yash) J. Hissick, age 72 of Bridgeport, beloved husband of 45 years to Lucille (Kotch) Hissick, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 with his family by his side. Born in McAdoo, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Anna Kmetz Hissick. A resident of Bridgeport for more than 50 years, he was a veteran of the Koran War, serving in the Army. A retired machinist for Bridgeport Machines where he worked for more than 28 years and a member of its Quarter Century Club, John had also worked fro William B. Meyers where he worked as a rigger for more than nine years before retiring. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union, Local #191. An avid sports fan, Yash enjoyed watching college games, especially the UCONN men's and women's sports programs. A kind and gentle individual who loved animals in particular his cat, "John Boy" and "Sam," his canine friend. A special note of thanks and gratitude to all the staff and nurses at St. Vincent's Medical Center, especially the nurses in ICU, 7E oncology ward and level 7 South, 10 South, the ER staff and to VNS and Vitas staff (Hospice Care). Also a particular note of appreciation to Dr. and Mrs. Paul Berard. Survivors in addition to his wife Lucille, a devoted daughter, Joanne and her husband, Dr. Craig Tenenbaum of Newtown; a sister, Carol Bonko and husband, Fred of McAdoo, Pa.; and several nephews and cousins.

Funeral Information

Friends are invited to go directly to St. Patrick's Church (lower level), 865 North Ave., Bridgeport on Saturday at 10 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull to follow. Calling hours are on Friday, January 1, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Commerce Hill-Radozycki Funeral Home, 4798 Main Street, Bridgeport.

Gregory McDermott

July 03, 1949 - January 02, 2010

Gregory J. McDermott, age 60, of Monroe, beloved husband of Charlene Traverse McDermott, died peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at St. Vincent's Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgeport on July 3, 1949, he was a son of S. Judith Cwalina McDermott of Bridgeport and the late John McDermott. Mr. McDermott was a graduate of Western Massachusetts University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He was a retired Firefighter with 27 dedicated years of service to the Town of Fairfield. Greg was a member of the Bridgeport Area Retired Firefighters (B.A.R.F.) and also volunteered at the Connecticut Burn Camp. He enjoyed collecting antiques and was a member of Port 5, Bridgeport. Most of all he enjoyed time spent with his family and he will be deeply missed. In addition to his beloved wife of 35 years and his mother, survivors include two loving children, Scott McDermott of Bridgeport, and Michele McDermott and her husband, Paul Mahler of Torrington; a cherished granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth; a brother, Robert McDermott and his wife, Debbie of Arizona; brother-in-law, Marc Traverse and his wife, Nichole of California; best friend, Charles DeAngelis and his wife Betsy of Stratford; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
