Raymond Goodwin

February 07, 1921 - March 22, 2011

Raymond K. Goodwin, 90, a lifelong resident of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully in his home on March 22, 2011. Born February 7, 1921, Raymond was a part of “The Greatest Generation” and a proud veteran of World War II, attached to the 273rd Ordinance Maintenance CO. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day 1944. married 58 years, he was predeceased by his sweetheart, Louise (Shaefer) Goodwin. Predeceasing him also were his younger brothers Arthur and William Goodwin, both World War II veterans as well as his niece, Ann (Goodwin) Domeracki. A skilled auto mechanic, Raymond was employed with Sikorski Aircraft for many years until his retirement at age 76. Surviving Raymond are his devoted children Mary Beth Watson of Bridgeport and Sheila Morrison and her Husband Donald Morrison of Fairfield. To carry on Raymond’s values and lessons are his cherished grandchildren, Jack Morrison, Hope Morrison, Ryan Watson and Kevin Watson who doted on their beloved “Pa”. He is additionally survived by his dear sister-in-law Kitty Goodwin and his nephew Arthur Goodwin.

Funeral Information

A private burial with military honors will be at the convenience of the family. His family mourns him and his country mourns the passing of so many like him who saw the country through one of its most perilous times.

John "JD" Jaroslav Dvorsky, Jr.

John “JD” Jaroslav Dvorsky, Jr., 42, of New Sweden Road, Woodstock, CT. died unexpectedly from injuries in a motorcycle accident Sunday in Woodstock. He was the beloved husband of Mary P. (Rogers) Dvorsky; they were married December 27, 1986 in Notre Dame Church in Southbridge. He was born December 13, 1962 in Southbridge, MA, son of John J. Dvorsky, Sr. of Woodstock and Joanne Litke of Woodstock.

He had made his home in Woodstock all his life, a graduate of the Woodstock Academy and class clown of 1980. He was a graduate of the Quinebaug Valley Community College with a degree in Business Administration. John was a supervisor at Staples, Inc., Putnam, for the last ten years, he also had worked at Cranston Print Works in Webster, Delta Rubber in Wauregan and Line Master Switch Company in Woodstock. He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Woodstock, and a born again Christian. John was an accomplished motorcyclist. He had a great love for the outdoors and nature, from riding his motorcycle, skiing, fishing, working in the yard to playing basketball. John was a loving and caring son, husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. He always made time for his children, helping out with coaching their youth sports to attending their games, his children were his pride and joy, his legacy.

He leaves in addition to his wife, father and mother; his three children: Elizabeth Lauren Dvorsky; Katherine Erin Dvorsky; John Connor Dvorsky all of Woodstock; a sister Joanne F. Backholm of Grafton, MA; a brother Paul Sivertsen of Woodstock; and The Rogers Family.

The Funeral Service will be Friday at 10:00 AM in the Evangelical Covenant Church, Child Hill Road, Woodstock. Calling hours Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial in The Woodstock Hill Cemetery, Woodstock. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The John Dvorsky Childrens Fund c/o The Citizens National Bank, P.O Box 119, Woodstock, CT, 06281, or any one of their branches.

Ross Robert Cole

Ross Robert Cole, 51 of Thompson, CT. Beloved son of Jean and Floyd Cole of Thompson, CT. Died Friday June 23 at Day Kimball Hospital of complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

He was employed for several years at the ARC of Quinebaug Valley (QVARC). Ross is survived by his parents, his three brothers and one sister, Judy of North Grosvenordale, CT; Blair of Thompson, CT, Craig of Harmony, PA and David of Katy, TX, Also by four nieces and three nephews.

Ross was a beautiful, gentle soul who touched and changed forever the lives of those who knew him; he has left behind a happy memory of himself and will be dearly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday June 30th at 11:00 AM at Thompson Congregational Church, Routes 193 & 200, Thompson, CT In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to QVARC, 687 Cook Hill Road, Danielson, CT 06239.

Warren O. Rosenlund

Warren O. Rosenlund, 88, of Woodstock, died Friday at the Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, husband of Constance J. (Gaillardet) Rosenlund; they were married July 27, 1940. He was born November 22, 1917 in Worcester, MA, son of the late Bror Evald Victor and Ada Olivia (Lindstrom) Rosenlund.

He was a Vice President/Sales Manager of Colt’s Plastics Co. Inc., for over 20 years working in Dayville and North Grosvenordale; he retired in 1982. He started his career in Plastics at Reed-Prentice Corp., Worcester, MA, General Electric Co., Plastics Division in Pittsfield, MA, and Taunton, MA, and at Haveg Industries, Taunton, MA. He was a resident of Woodstock since 1962, an active member of the First Congregational Church of Woodstock, served as treasurer, trustee, and on the organ search committee. He was a Mason at the Israel Putnam Lodge #46, AF & AM in Woodstock and an Amateur Radio Operator since 1934; W1JGY. He was a charter member and founder of the Woodstock Historical Society, a member of the Woodstock Lions Club having served as President and Secretary. He served on the Finance Committee of the Woodstock Cemetery Association for many years; he also catalogued all the burials in the Cemetery in great detail. He was a graduate of South High School in Worcester, Class of 1934. He served as a Corporal in National Guard 52nd Brigade, Worcester, MA, 1936-1939.

He leaves in addition to his wife Connie of 65 years, a daughter, Pamela J. Rosenlund of Putnam, a son, Paul Rosenlund and partner Kathryn Rogals of Belfast, ME, a sister Margit Swanstrom of Auburn, MA, a beloved granddaughter, Beth Michaeles and her husband Jonathan of Waterville, ME, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his step mother Hjordis (Thyden) Rosenlund, two brothers Bror and Victor.

A Memorial Service will be July 8th (Saturday) at 2:00 pm at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock, Route 169, Woodstock, CT. Calling hours July 7th (Friday) from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial in Elmvale Cemetery, Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the New Century Fund of First Congregational Church of Woodstock, PO Box 147, Woodstock, CT 06281 or to the Philanthropy Department of DKH, PO Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260.

Kenneth I. Beatson

Kenneth I. Beatson, age 80, of Sunrise Drive, Woodstock, died Tuesday July 4th, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy (Dowling) Beatson, they were married November 21, 1953 in Weymouth, MA. He was born November 2, 1925 in Bristol, CT, son of the late A. Irving and Gertrude (Mills) Beatson.

Mr. Beatson was an Industrial Arts teacher at the Woodstock Academy for thirty eight years, he retired in 1989. He enjoyed teaching woodworking, and also taught metalworking and leathercraft. For many years he was the audio visual director and graduation advisor. For twenty seven years he was the track and cross-country coach, he served twenty five years as a member of the Quinebaug Valley Conference and was both conference president and director of the basketball tournament for fifteen years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army Aircorp as a corporal. He was a graduate of Central Connecticut State College in 1950. Kenneth has made his home in Woodstock since 1951, a member of the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Department, and avid Red Sox fan.

He leaves in addition to his wife, a son: Daniel Beatson and his wife Kim of East Brookfield, MA; three daughters: Kathlene Ouellette and her husband Paul of Norwich; Erin May and her husband Bill of MA; Nora Steinhauser and her husband Ted of Woodbridge, VA; Five grandchildren: Erica, Heather, Andrew, Caitlyn and Brenden. He was predeceased by a daughter Patricia Beatson and a brother Gordon Beatson.

A graveside funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 AM in the Elmvale Cemetery, Senexet Road, Woodstock. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Woodstock Academy, Woodstock, CT 06281.

David L. Sarty

David L. Sarty, age 62, of Newport Avenue, Putnam, died Tuesday at his home. He was born October 6, 1943 in Putnam, son of the late Earl and Florence Anna (Corriveau) Sarty.

He was a life long resident of Putnam. He was a security guard working at Staples Distribution Center in Killingly and Putnam for the last ten years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the US Marine Corps. He was an avid pool player, enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching auto racing and working on all types of word puzzles.

He leaves his wife: Shirley (Francia) Sarty of Putnam, his children: David M. Sarty, Cathy Sarty, both of Putnam, grandchildren: Jessica, Sondra, Jared, his beloved companion: Susan Murphy of Putnam, her children: Elisabeth, Heather, Rebecca, Michael, a nephew: Robert Sarty, a niece: Debra Baxter, both of Killingly. He was predeceased by brothers: Robert, Russell, niece: Susan Skrzypczak.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, July 18th, at 3:00 pm at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam.

Robert “Jeff” Roy

Robert “Jeff” Roy, age 54, of Thompson Road, Thompson, died Thursday in an accident in Thompson. He was the beloved husband of Brenda (Bibek) Roy; they were married February 24, 1989. He was born August 19, 1951 in Putnam, son of Georgia (Coolidge) Ballard of Thompson and the late Robert J. Roy.

Jeff was employed at Barnes Concrete in Putnam running the Sand & Gravel operation for the last 28 years. Jeff was a Vietnam Veteran, he served in the US Army from 1968 to 1971 as a Mortar Sergeant, stationed in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. In April of 1971 he was awarded a Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and the North Grosvenordale American Legion Post 67. He enjoyed woodworking, especially building furniture, and riding motorcycles. He was a life long resident of Thompson, Jeff had a great love for his family and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends especially his twin niece and nephew. He was an avid NASCAR fan and a Jeff Gordon fan.

He leaves, in addition to his wife, Brenda, and mother, Georgia, a daughter: Bethany Roy and her boyfriend, Zachary Monahan both of Thompson, a sister: Cindy Roy Martin and her companion Mark Dube of Thompson, a stepfather: Clarence Ballard of Thompson several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service will be held Monday at 11:00 AM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam followed by Committal Prayers and Military honors at the Munyan Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and Monday 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Putnam.

Preston T. Roberts

Preston T. Roberts, 83, of Ravenelle Road, North Grosvenordale, died Saturday at Matulaitis Nursing home in Putnam. He was the husband of Mary (Cuff) Roberts of Woodstock. Born December 13, 1922 in Wolfeboro, NH, son of the late Charles E. and Ella Frances (Rowe) Roberts.

He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Woodstock for many years and was also a member of the Woodstock Inland Wetlands Commission and the Board of Directors of the Woodstock Fair. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire in 1948, he also received a Masters Degree in Agriculture Economics from Cornell University in 1963.

He worked as a farm extension agent in Jefferson County, NY until 1954 when he came to Connecticut, where he continued as extension agent working with the University of Connecticut, until he retired in 1985. He always felt that he helped many farm families make the transition of the family farm from one generation to the next, keeping the farm in the family. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the US Army in the Philippines.

In addition to his wife Mary he leaves a son Richard and his wife Melissa of Wethersfield, a brother Irving Roberts and his wife Jean of Alton, NH, his twin sister, Mary Goodrich of Alton, NH and Ruth Schenck and her husband William of Keene, NH, a sister-in-law Suzanne Roberts of Belmont, NH, two grandchildren, Amelia and Thomas, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son David Roberts in 1981, a brother Leslie Roberts in 2001 and a brother-in-law, Otis Goodrich in 2001.

A Memorial Service will be Saturday at 2:00 pm at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock, Route 169, Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the David Roberts Memorial Fund, Woodstock Academy, Woodstock, CT 06281 or First Congregational Church of Woodstock, PO Box 147, Woodstock, CT.

Lucien E. Perreault

Lucien E. Perreault, 73, formerly of Putnam and Thompson, died Sunday at his son's home in Newport, RI. He was husband of the late Juliette (Lafortune) Perreault; she died August 25, 2004. He was born August 1, 1932 in Danielson son of the late Napoleon and Corrina (Laflamme) Perreault.

He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Army. He was a Ward Tech at the Day kimball Hospital working over thirty years, he retired in 1994. He also worked at Parizek Button Shop in Putnam for ten years. He was a graduate of the Killingly High School. He had made his home in the Putnam and Thompson areas most of his life, recently moving to Newport. A communicant of Sacred Heart Church in West Thompson, he enjoyed music, playing the piano and organ, also flower gardening and making flower arrangements. He will be remembered as a loving and caring father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend.

He leaves three children: Patricia Ann Gagne of Putnam; Gary Perreault and his wife Jerri of Thompson; Brian Perreault and his wife Sharon of Newport; RI. a sister; Florence Lussier of Putnam; four grandchildren: Ryan; Kyle; Tammi; David, three great grandchildren: twins Parker and Preston, and Amber.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:30 AM from the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 47 West Thompson Road, West Thompson. Calling hours Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Funeral Home. Burial in West Thompson Cemetery, West Thompson. In lieu of flowers donations made be made in his memory to Hospice of Northeastern CT., PO Box 632, Putnam, CT. 06260 or Visiting Nurse Services -- Hospice of Newport and Bristol County, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI., 02871.
