Edward Navarro

Edward Navarro, 77, of Pomfret, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center from injuries in an automobile accident. He was the beloved husband of M. Anne (Nelson) Navarro, they were married July 30, 1954. He was born June 29, 1931 in Thompson, son of the late Saboto and Jennie (Leo) Navarro.

He made his home in Pomfret most of his life, spending his youth in North Grosvenordale. He was a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret. He was a graduate of the Putnam Trade School with a trade in Carpentry. After working for construction companies in the Harford area for several years, Ed took a job as a groundman with (CL& P) Northeast Utilities where he worked for thirty nine years. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Airforce and later with the CT National Guard. Ed enjoyed playing golf and cards, a member of the Quinnatisset Country Club for many years, the American Legion Grosvenordale, the Putnam Lodge of Elks and the Pomfret Lions Club. He also enjoyed caring for his grandchildren, and spending time with family and friends. He always valued and took pride in his community service.

In addition to his wife Anne of 54 years, he leaves his children: Jan and Tom ST Jean of Pomfret; Jane Navarro of Putnam; John and Brenda Navarro of Pomfret Center; Joan and Scott Grenon of Hampton; Jim Navarro of Pomfret Center; his siblings: Angelo Navarro of Putnam; Lena Deotte of Putnam; Daniel Navarro of Pompano Beach, FL; John Navarro of Killingly; Raymond Navarro of Pomfret, his grandchildren: Matt, Jon, Jennie, Emily, Dylan, Hannah, Alex, Sammy, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, David, Rocko, Anthony, Joseph, Salvatore.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 19, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Most Holy Trinity Church, 568 Pomfret Street, Pomfret.Calling hours Sunday, January 18, 2009 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852, or to the charity of one's choice.

Mary Ann McMahon Prestas

Mary Ann McMahon Prestas of Putnam, CT passed away on Thursday January 15, 2009 surrounded by her loved ones, under the extraordinary and compassionate care of Dr. Joseph Botta and the excellent staff at Westview Health Care Center.

Mary Ann was born on December 28, 1931 to Stephen Lawrence McMahon and Sadie Agnes (Graham) McMahon in Bridgeport, CT. She is pre-deceased by her husband Edward and her older brother Stephen.

Mary Ann is survived by her dear sister Sally Buchanan and three children: Gregory Prestas Gregory@lightlink.com of Ithaca, NY, Dr. Amy E. Prestas drbones89@aol.com and her life partner Linda L. Alexander of Seattle, WA, and Edward J. Prestas Jr. prestas@sbcglobal.net and his wife Tracy of Putnam, CT. Along with three grandchildren: Hannah E. Prestas, Edward J. Prestas III and Christopher Willette she also leaves her sister-in-law Marge Mullaney and her husband Jack of Jacksonville, FL and many nieces, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Mary Ann married her high school sweetheart Ed in 1952 before he went overseas to serve in the Army during the Korean War. She worked coloring newspaper comics at the Bridgeport Herald until her husband returned and they started their family. She stayed at home to raise her three children until the family moved to Barrington, RI in 1968.

She pursued a career at Brown University in 1970 as an administrative assistant in the University Relations department and continued there until illness dictated a change 15 years later. A cancer survivor, she worked at Creative Environments in East Providence for many years always enjoying new challenges and jumping right in to learn new things via the trial by fire method. She was an artist, a musician and a fun-loving friend and confidant.

Mary Ann loved being a grandmother most of all, and watching her grandchildren grow into such wonderful people gave her incredible joy. She enjoyed knitting, reading, word jumbles, crossword puzzles, watching the Patriots and collegiate women's basketball.

A devoted and beloved wife, she nursed her husband through his illness until he passed away only 7 weeks before her on November 28, 2008. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and we will be forever grateful for the love and kindness she shared with us during the brief time we all had together. We miss them both tremendously, mourn them deeply, and will love them always and forever.

A celebration of Edward and Mary Ann's life together will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Grove Street Cemetery, 247 Grove Street, Putnam, with Military Honors, followed by a memorial and reception at the Heritage Pines Club House, 164 Perry Street, Putnam. Smith & Walker Funeral Home is in Charge of the arrangements. Please omit Flowers.

Janet Beverly Sanger Kolat

January 28, 1936 - January 22, 2009

Woodstock and Putnam- Janet Beverly (Sanger) Kolat, 72, of Putnam, went to be with The LORD on Thursday, January 22, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband, Emeryk Kolat, in 1989. She was born January 28, 1936 in Putnam, the daughter of the late Hobart and Evelyn (Calhoun) Sanger.

She made her home in Putnam most of her life. Janet was a graduate of Woodstock Academy and attended Elim Bible Institute in Lima, NY. She was previously employed at American Optical and then as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Matulaitis Nursing home over a span of 23 years. Janet had many interests that included her love of flowers, caring for stray cats, sending/receiving cards and letters, having lunches out with friends and playing board games with her family. She was also a gifted pianist, playing by ear. Until her home going, Janet had been a long time member of the East Putnam Community Church serving her God and Savior in their music ministry, prayer chain, Nominating Committee, nursery care, Missions Committee, Women's Christian Outreach and personally transporting shut-ins. However, Janet felt her primary spiritual function was her personal intercessory prayer.

She leaves a son, Glenn Kolat and his wife, Olga of Putnam, CT.; a daughter, Marilyn Kolat of Darlington, RI.; and a son Brian Kolat and his wife, Kitty of Taylors, SC.; also grandchildren, Renee', Kristin, Johanna, and Hazen; and great granddaughter, Tigerlily; a sister, Dorothy Shiers and her husband William of Halifax, Nova Scotia; a brother-in-law, Alphonse Kolat and his wife Evelyn of Putnam; a sister-in-law Helen Lulli of Las Vegas, NV.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Janet was predeceased by her daughter Beverly (Kolat) Briggs and a brother Hobart "Lee" Sanger.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 3:00pm at the East Putnam Community Church, 250 East Putnam Road, East Putnam, CT. 06260. Elsa S. Johnson

Elsa S. Johnson, 103, of Pilgrim Manor, Cromwell, formerly of Country Road, Woodstock, died Friday. She was born December 21, 1905 in Plainfield, a daughter of the late Alfred and Henny (Strandberg) Johnson.

Elsa had made her home in Woodstock most of her life, the last 20 years, she made her home in Cromwell. She attended Becker Business College, and worked as an office clerk for many years at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. Elsa was the care giver for her father and mother in there late years. She was an active member of the Evangelical Covenant church in Woodstock.

She leaves a brother Axel and his wife Olga Johnson of Pomfret; a sister Anna Johnson of Cromwell, several niece and Nephews. Graveside services will be in the spring in Elmvale Cemetery, Woodstock, CT. The Smith & Walker Funeral Home, Putnam in in charge of the arrangements.

John C. Dean

Pomfret, CT - John C. Dean, 85, died peacefully Thursday, January 22, 2009, at his home surrounded by family. He was born February 2, 1923, in Lawrence MA, son of the late Clement and Julia (Donahue) Dean. On August 21, 1943, he was united in marriage to his beloved wife Monica A. (Webb) Dean at St. Mary's Church in Lawrence. John graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA in 1940.

He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 as 1st Lieutenant, Navigator. After the war he attended Boston University, graduating in 1948 and joining the accounting firm of Touche, Ross, Bailey and Smart. In 1954 John joined Ford Motor Company and was soon transferred to Dearborn, MI. He spent 26 years with Ford retiring in 1980 as Chairman and CEO of Ford Motor Credit, Co. and Vice President of Ford Motor. During his career John was an active member of his community, serving many organizations, including chairing the United Way's annual fund drive. Upon retirement in 1980, John returned with Monica to New England, settling in Pomfret. They became active members of Most Holy Trinity Church. In addition John served on many boards while in retirement.

John leaves behind many close friends and associates from his church and the greater Pomfret Community, as well as from Michigan. He will be missed by everyone whose life he touched. John was a dedicated, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His favorite times were those when he was surrounded by his loving family. Holiday and other celebrations at his home were some of his happiest moments.

In addition to his wife Monica of 65 years, John is survived by three daughters: Karen Stutz and her husband Jack of Seekonk, MA; Jeryl Ann McGuire and her husband Tom of Amherst, MA; Maryann Dean of Washington, DC, four sons: John C. Dean, Jr. and his wife Susan of Woodside, CA; Mark Dean and his wife Renee of Cornwall, VT; Michael Dean and his wife Heather of Barnstable, MA; James Dean of Woodstock, CT, his daughter-in-law Polly Dean of Pomfret, CT, eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, MaryJo Lawson. He leaves two sisters: Elizabeth Melnikas and Julia Fionte, both of North Andover, MA, a brother: Edwin Dean and his wife Mary of Andover, MA as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, February 2nd, at Most Holy Trinity Church, 568 Pomfret Street, Pomfret, CT. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Dean Foundation at Central Catholic High School, 300 Hampshire Road, Lawrence, MA 01841-9984 or Hospice and Palliative Care of NE CT, PO Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260. Marjorie Alice (Dyson) Robinson

Marjorie Alice (Dyson) Robinson, 79, of South Killingly died at home Friday, January 23, 2009. The daughter of the late Ernest and Maude (Martin) Dyson, she lived in Danielson most of her life. Educated in Killingly Schools, she was graduated from Killingly High School. Excelling in commercial studies, she went to work in her senior year at Jacobs Rubber, ultimately becoming executive secretary to J. Edgar Moe, manager of that division of Bullard Clark, Company.

She was married to Lavius A. Robinson, Jr., MD. in 1954. She is survived by her husband, her children, and her grandchildren: Donald Woods and his son Robert of Alabama, Faith Robinson and Christopher Cape, her son Eduardo Cabrera of New Jersey; Mark Robinson, MD. and Karen and their sons Samuel and Benjamin of North Carolina; Jane and Robert Milne, their son Ian and daughter Alyssa of West Hartford; Joyce and Bruno Jugovic, their sons Daniel and Nicholas of Massachusetts. Her sister, Priscilla Dyson of Danielson, survives her. Her brother, David, predeceased her. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a few great great nieces and great great nephews.

Dr. Robinson started practice in their home on Broad Street, and she served as his office assistant. She did the accounting and was paymaster until he retired. She had a keen mind and chose to be a professional mother over other career opportunities. She fed her severely handicapped grandson, Daniel, thru a gastric tube for a year. She was an early supporter of the Springtime Festival, and chaired the first queen pageant. She received the Springtime Festival Founders' Award in May 2000. Active in her churches, she enjoyed singing in the choir most of her life. She and her husband were advisers to St. Albans Youth Group for many years. A gifted Tole painter; she braided rugs, loved her herb garden, but above all was an expert quilter. When the children were grown, she had long evenings while her husband was at the office. Her many crafts testify that she did not waste time. A lady thru and thru, quiet and self- effacing, she bore her long decline into twilight patiently, and now, praise be to God, she is at peace.

Marjorie loved flowers, and her family gave her many through out her life when she could enjoy them. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation in her name to the Killingly High School Library Book Fund, ATTN: Christine Clarke, 369 Main Street, Danielson, CT 06239. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 10:30 AM in St. Albans Episcopal Church, 254 Broad Street, Danielson, CT. There are no calling hours. Committal will be private. James "Whitey" Greenhalgh

PUTNAM - James "Whitey" Greenhalgh, 86, died Monday, January 26, 2009 at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT. He was the devoted husband of Mildred (Cogswell) Morse Greenhalgh, with whom he shared his last 15 years.

James was born February 12, 1922 in Norwich, CT, the son of the late Agnes Nygren Greenhalgh and James Greenhalgh. He attended Plainfield public schools and graduated in 1940 from Plainfield High, where he earned 11 varsity letters. James was a member of the Springfield College, Springfield, MA, class of 1944, where he majored in Physical Education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. At Springfield he played baseball, basketball, and football, and was rated one of the top punters in the nation. He received a Masters in Education from Springfield College and a 6th year certificate from the University of Connecticut.

An important and proud phase of James's life began in 1942 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1943 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He fought in WWII as part of the 2nd Marine Division, from 1944-1946. James spent time in Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and Nagasaki. James left the Marines as a First Lieutenant, and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Victory Medal, Occupation (Japan) Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. He forged important, life-long, and loyal friendships during this time and his experience as a Marine helped define the principled and honorable man he would become.

After the war, in 1947, James began a 35-year career with the Putnam public school system. He taught Physical Education, coached football, basketball, and baseball, and eventually served as the high school guidance counselor. James was Putnam's most renowned football coach, and in 1999, the St. Marie - Greenhalgh Sports Complex was dedicated in honor of James and the late George St. Marie. James's overall coaching record was 574 wins, 306 losses, and 12 ties.

In 1977, James married the late Charlotte McCulloch. They were together until her death in 1991. In 1993, James married Mildred Morse and enjoyed his later years with Millie, traveling New England, playing golf, cribbage, reading mystery novels, and dining out. For 15 years James enjoyed a second home in Naples, FL. James was a dedicated UCONN Girl's Basketball fan and a life-long loyal New York Giants fan.

Besides his wife Mildred, Jim is survived by his step children, Ellsworth Morse of Haddonfield, NJ, and Marjorie Morse and her husband Robert Huntley, of Nashua, NH.

All are welcome to share in a Celebration of James's life at 11:00am on Friday, January 30th, at the Congregational Church, 175 Main Street, Putnam. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Jim's memory to Springfield College Development Office, 263 Alden Street, Springfield, MA 01109, or to the charity of your choice. There will be no calling hours. The Smith & Walker Funeral Home of Putnam is in charge of arrangements.

Miriam A. Lamondy

Miriam A. Lamondy, 81, of Walnut Street, Putnam, died Monday surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Edward E. Lamondy, they were married in 1953, he died in 1979. She was born March 27, 1927 in Dayville, daughter of Jacob and Nellie (Joray) Locker.

She was a graduate of Putnam High School Class of 1945. She worked as a Laboratory Technician for over twenty years, at Day Kimball Hospital and the Danielson Clinic. Her last employment was with the Adult Education and Literacy Volunteers in Putnam and Danielson. She was a member of the Putnam Baptist Church, serving on many Boards and committees; she served on the Board of Trustees of Little River Acres, a member of the Putnam Grange # 97 and was a member of the executive committee, a member of the AARP and the Putnam Seniors Citizens. Miriam enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with her family.

She leaves her family, a son: Paul E. Lamondy of Putnam; a daughter: Anne M. Lamondy and her husband William Neilson of Putnam; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings: John Locker; Edward Locker; Germaine Pond; Julia Bernier; Elma Denton; Gerald Locker.

Funeral service will be Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial in High Street Cemetery, Dayville. Donations may be made in her memory to the Putnam Baptist Church, 170 Church Street, Putnam, CT 06260 or the American Cancer Society, 106 Route 32, Franklin, CT 06254.

Mary Spielman

Mary Spielman was born in North Scituate, RI on October 13, 1918, a daughter of George and Mary Adams Bishop. When Mrs. Spielman was a child, her family moved from Rhode Island and settled in Putnam.

She attended local schools and graduated from Putnam High School in 1936. She was the wife of the late John L. Spielman who died on February 8, 1983. They were married at the Putnam Baptist Church on October 11, 1937. After raising her children, Mrs. Spielman went to work for the Windham County Observer for more than eighteen years, retiring in 1980. Mrs. Spielman was a long time member of the Putnam Baptist Church and a director at the Putnam Baptist Homes at Little River Acres. She enjoyed traveling and flower gardening.

She is survived by a son, John L. Spielman,Jr of Barefoot Bay, FL and a daughter, Barbara Jane Vose of Sebastian, FL., two grandsons, David Vose of Tolland, CT and Mark Vose of Key West, FL., two granddaughters, Joyce Abeln of Douglasville, GA and Bethe Spielman of Barefoot Bay, FL., three great granddaughters and one great grandson. Mrs. Spielman was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and Coomer Bishop and three sisters, Ida Winterbottom, Ruth McDonnell and Annie Chaffee.

Friends and relatives are invited to a grave side memorial service on May 2, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Grove Street Cemetary, Putnam. Arrangements are by Smith & Walker. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to local VNA Hospices in Mrs. Spielman's memory.

Catherine May (Smith) Leeman

PUTNAM - Catherine May (Smith) Leeman, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 6, 2009 at the Lanessa Extended Care in Webster, MA, where she has made her home. She was born in Putnam, March 11, 1929, daughter of the late Stephen H. & Lillian Smith, Sr.

Catherine was a graduate of Putnam High School, Class of 1947 and lived on a farm in Putnam for most of her life. Catherine worked for the Southern New England Telephone Co. and Wellington Curtain Co. Catherine belonged to the CT District #1 Vasa Order of America and she was a District Master. She also belonged to local Viking Lodge #621, she held various offices and was chairman for many years. She was a dedicated member, as her Finnish Heritage meant a lot to her. She made two trips to Finland in her lifetime to visit friends and relatives. Family was a number one priority in Catherine's life.

She was predeceased by her husband, Al Leeman, a sister, Esther Smith and a brother, John Smith, Sr. She leaves behind her two sons, Michael and Hilton Kaskela, a step-daughter, Linda Myhre, a brother, Stephen H. Smith, Jr. and a number of grand children, great-grand children, nieces and nephews. Calling hours Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Graveside services in Putnam Heights Cemetery in the spring.

Claire Leavens

July 14, 1924-May 24, 2009

Dayville - Claire Leavens, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 24, 2009 at a family residence in St Petersburg, FL surrounded by her family. Claire was born July 14, 1924 in Putnam, CT, daughter to Arthur E. Parent and Valida Sorel Parent.

Claire lived her adult life in Dayville, CT. She was a supervisor at Idle Wild Farms in Pomfret for many years before retiring.

Claire is survived by her husband, Wallace J. Nichols of Dayville, CT and St. Petersburg, FL , two daughters, Sandra Pilcher with her husband, David of St. Petersburg, FL, and Linda Leavens of Niantic, CT; two brothers, Paul L. Parent with his wife Julie of Mesa AZ, and Arthur H. Parent with his wife Lorraine of Danielson, CT; two grandsons, Marc Pilcher with his wife Dawn of Ruskin, FL, and Christopher Pilcher with his wife Michelle of Forest Hills MD; two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Claire Pilcher and Jack Pilcher, both of Forest Hill, MD and many nieces and nephews who were all very special to her.

Mark A. Daigneault

Dayville - Mark A. Daigneault, 51, of Dayville, CT, died with his family and his friends at his side, Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA. He was the beloved husband of Judy (Flynn) Daigneault; they were married June 4, 1983 in South Burlington, VT. He was born April 15, 1958 in Burlington, VT, son of Gerald and Denise (Morin) Daigneault of Tallahassee, FL. Â

He had made his home in Dayville for the last 24 years, formerly of South Burlington, VT, a 1976 graduate of South Burlington High School and had attended Central Connecticut State University. He had been employed at Lowe's Distribution Center for the last four years and worked as a sales rep for Graham Medical, Hermitage Medical Supplies and Service Office Supplies in Tallahassee. He was an avid golfer and achieved two hole-in- ones, one at Quinnatisset and one at Putnam Country Club, he was a baseball umpire, and an avid sports fan. His memberships include Danielson Elks and Knights of Columbus. Mark was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Dayville. He was a devoted father, son and brother. He was known as Uncle BUBBA to his nieces and nephews.

He leaves in addition to his wife Judy and his mom and dad, his three children, Andrew M. Daigneault, Danielle M. Daigneault, Katie I. Daigneault, all of Dayville, two sisters, Mary Crane of Bridgewater, MA, Carol Hodges of Tallahassee, several nieces and nephews.
